Monday's fajita night is not to be missed! We ordered a generous sized pitcher of a delicious and very strong Margaria and three meals. The bill was fifty dollars. The food was so flavorful and its worth the trip just for the chips and salsa. It wasn't too crowded, but we were sitting at a bar top and couldn't get service until we asked for it. This place is small and cozy. The table side guacamole is awesome, she made it at your table. The chips were ok, they gave use ranch sauce and salsa ,no cheese we all were looking for cheese and they did bring us cheese. I order steak burrito 9.99 or 10 (lol) It was a large burrito. Yum, yum, yum! We've tried half a dozen Mexican Restaurants in the last year and this place is the best by far. The fresh guacamole was the best we've had. The beef and chicken were tasty and moist. I have gone to this La Tolteca a few times and every time is a very good experience, I am a big fan of their white salsa that they bring out every time before they serve you your meal. I usually get the same thing, the cal ripken burritto because it is too good, but I have had a couple other options and they have a overall good menu. My steak burrito was ok. The rest of my table ordered different dishes, all w/ ground beef stuffing... and they all tasted the same even tho they were different dishes. The ground beef has some kind of aftertaste to it. I can't describe it except that it tastes like it has added liver meat (I happen to like liver, just not ground up.) I was pretty disappointed considering how well-recommended this place was. The first time we tried to dine there, the long lines turned us away but thought it must be good enough to return. The food and prices were good. Our only complaint was that it was a long wait for a table and for our food. Unfortunately, when you have young kids (4, 6 year old), you don't have the luxury of a long wait for rice and beans. Most Mexican places have food out extremely fast - here, not so fast. We have been coming to La Tolteca in Bel Air for 10 years and always loved it. Lately, I have been very disappointed with the level of service and quality of food. Many of the waiters have been there as long as I can remember and their service is sub par. They take forever to come to your table to get your drink order and you are almost supposed to act like its a privilege for them to wait on you. The last two times I dined there I waited over 40 minutes to get my food and the waiter never came back to ask about drink refills or bring you to go boxes. They need to step up their game with the amount of competition that has flooded Bel Air. read more

Dined with friends at La Tolteca Bel Air on Monday Aug 20th. It was our first time there. I ordered a taco salad (my usual at a Mexican restaurant). It was delicious!! I recently made a trip to Denver, CO and was pleasantly surprised with a few Mexican restaurants and their ability to consistently serve big tasty portions at a price that did not break the bank. Returning to Harford County, my taste buds begged for more. This said, this review is somewhat biased considering my recent experiences. However, Denver, CO is hardly known for its Mexican cuisine- it's not like I was in Mexico, Southern California or even Texas. Onto the review... Upon entering the parking lot of La Tolteca, my expectations were quite high. The restaurant's landscaping and architecture easily catches peoples' eyes as they drive through Bel Air. It seems like I've never heard a bad review from this place, everyone seems to love it. Anyway a friend and I entered the place, and the decor is obnoxious at least. Its just overdone in my opinion. Cheesy Mexican flair run abundant with 10 or so pinatas and LaTolteca engraved in various wooden pieces throughout the restaurant. This might have an advantage in helping to attract people who are completely ignorant of Mexican culture and probably small children. The chips and salsa were okay. They serve a basket with 2 different dips. A standard salsa and a mysterious white dipping sauce. We ended up splitting an order of Nachos with Cheese, and 2 Grande Burros. For nearly $5 I was expecting the nachos to be better than they were. It was basically less chips than was served at the beginning of our meal, smothered with jalapeno Velveeta tasting cheese. They tasted like they had been sitting for awhile because the chips had begun to become soggy tasting. The waitress didn't seem very attentive, so I would not be surprised if they did. However, I'm not going to lie- we did eat all of the chips so they weren't terrible, just was expecting better. The burritos were also fair at best. My friend requested no sour cream and onions. My burrito came with no onions, and his was loaded with onions with no sour cream. The quality and taste of the chicken and peppers in my burrito were pretty good, as was the guacamole. There was a heavy "taco seasoning" type of sauce that was in the burrito that wasn't very appealing. The rice was dotted with dehydrated peas and carrot bits and was a bit old tasting. I'd give the burrito a 6.5/10. I would have been disappointed had I been my friend however, as he picked out probably a half onion worth of onions in his burrito I'm not sure if we just didn't order the right things or what, but if a Mexican restaurant can't produce quality nachos and burritos- they're in trouble. However, many of the local folk seem to like this place. Maybe they just haven't had good Mexican food or maybe after a few margaritas, the quality and taste of the food doesn't matter so much. Chipotle anyone? Won't be back! read more
