This review is for the Churchville location specifically, as we haven't been to any of the other locations. The atmosphere is colorful, specifically the furniture. Large flat screens to watch the games, is a plus. Our wait staff has always been friendly, efficient and prompt. In my opinion, the chips, salsa and white dip are one of the best things about the place. This is not authentic mexican food, but more-americanized versions. We keep going back, because our kids enjoy it, for some reason? (maybe because they always run into their "friends" there) Granted we haven't had everything on the menu, but what we have ordered is decent. Nachos, Chicken Quesadilla supremes, Shrimp Tacos etc. Will we go back? Yes. Is it the best? No way. Is it authentic? Not even close. Is the guacamole good? Meh. Is it affordable? Yes. Personally I found this to be one of the best Mexican places in MD. I grew up in Texas and have always looked for Mexican worth eating here in the North... La Tolteca is as good as you can get on this side of the states! I personally LOVE the taco salad deluxe. They have the most tender beef I have ever eaten!!! This place is a great restaurant. Affordable Mexican food, great shrimp/beef/chicken fajitas, shrimp tacos, warm chips and tasty salsa. My kids loved the chicken fingers and french fries (we haven't quite gotten them to love anything but quesadillas yet). The service was attentive, it is very kid friendly (crayons, kid menu, etc.), and while it is not a big restaurant (I would DEFINITELY not go there on Cinco De Mayo unless you are feeling REALLY patient), they seemed to handle a full dining room quite competently. I did read some of the mediocre reviews and that led me to hesitate before we want. After eating there, I am not sure what else people want and would return with no hesitation. read more

If you enjoy ethnic food, this is your place! Food quality is consistently great. Portions are beyond your expectations. Service is among the best in the area. Even though it is small and crowded, the noise lever is much lower than expected. That's probably because everyone is eating and enjoying their meals and don't want to waste time talking... I'm vegan which means no animal products at all. I ordered the vegetable fajitas without cheese or sour cream. I took several bites of the first fajita and then realized amongst the veggies was a shrimp. Good thing I'm not allergic to shrimp. They could have sent me to the hospital or killed me. Regardless, it's disgusting for a vegan to eat animal products. They need to be respectful of their customers. I sent the food back and was not charged. We went as a party of 7 on a Sunday evening. We were told there would be a 15 minute wait... We patiently waited outside for 40 minutes and when I went in to ask how much longer it would be I was told the table we were waiting on was JUST served their food so it would be about another 30 minutes. Needless to say we left and will not return. We wasted almost an hour when we were told 15 minutes. And the hostess was very rude. Very Very frustrating. read more

La Tolteca makes my tummy hurt. Don't get me wrong, they have at least one or two good things, but the food is sloppy. The atmosphere is annoying. Lemme put it this way: there's nothing that could foreseeably convince me to return. Last time I visited the restaurant, I ordered some kind of pork in a green pepper sauce. A Bel Air staple! Never disappointing. It's usually crowded - a good sign - but the wait is less than 10 minutes.

My family first visited Tolteca yesterday, April 5th. At first, everything was great. Tortilla chips were brought to the table with an excellent salsa with strong fresh cilantro flavor. My wife had the enchilada plate with beef, cheese, and chicken. Overall, she was satisfied with her meal. I had a beef burrito, beef enchilada and chile relleno. The meal was ok but too much beef and little else. My son had the kids Mexican pizza which was a whole lot of ground beef piled on a tortilla and nothing else. He refused to eat it. Still, we left the restaurant stuffed and somewhat satisfied. That all changed a few hours later. I became very nauseous and violently threw up. My wife was also nauseous and couldn't sleep last night. Still feels ill this morning. As we cannot state with 100% reliability that the illness was a direct result of our meal, I highly suspect that the beef was the culprit. I hope that if the management reviews this review, that they in turn will check the date that ground beef, toss it and start from scratch. read more

it's a pretty standard mexican restaurant. it's not amazingly good for this type of mexican, but it's not bad either. it does the trick. the salsa is good, and I, like a couple of other reviews, am not sure what the white stuff on the side they serve you. it's like ranch dressing but not. i've been here a couple of times where the food hasn't come out insanely quick, as I am accustomed to from similar restaurants. The margaritas are pretty weak. There are times when you'll have to wait, say circa 6-8pm on a Friday or Saturday night. The portions are huge and reasonable. overall, it's more or less the only game in town. it's reliable, cheap, and convienent. I will definitely be going back because I love Mexican food. read more

Apparently the hostess will sit her friends over other customers who have been waiting 25-30 mins. When I asked her about it she said that she was confused. And then when we did get a table, the host seemed to be annoyed by me. So we walked out and will spend our money elsewhere. Poor customer service. Have been here many times since opening and I believe the service is not as good as it once was. There definitely needs to be a more comfortable waiting area and some of the tables are too close to relax and enjoy a meal without being bumped when someone goes by the table. The food is sometimes not hot enough and just does not seem as tasty as once was. Would probably not recommend as favorably now. read more

I'm not really that into mexican food but I will say I like this place a lot. They have a huge menu and I havent tried much of it but I usually go with one of the combo platters with chicken enchiladas, tacos, and chimichungas. They start you off with tortilla chips with red and white salsas. The chips are a little thick for my liking but not bad. The decor is very typical mexicana style, pinatas, a mural of an aztec or mayan pyramid on the wall, and of course latino pop playing loudly. The prices are very reasonable, and the food is served quickly. Everything tastes pretty fresh and there churros are freakin amazing. I just can't get enough of those things, there are not many foods that consistenly make me say mmm everytime I eat them. If your hungry for mexican food this place is probably the best in Harford County. By the way, the location in churchville just was not as good. Stick with Bel Air. read more

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant. Great salsa and chips. My favorite meal is the Burrito Grande, made with steak. Like a big steak fajita in a wrap. I recommend it very highly. They have great margaritas too. Great friendly wait staff too. read more
