Stopped in for lunch today. Decently busy for a friday lunch. Had a few lunch specials on the menu. We started off with 2 frozen margs and a hot cheese dip in addition to the complimentary salsa n chips. We got for entrees 2 tamales, a beef taco salad, and beef fajitas. Man, what a filling meal! La Tolteca is one of several Mexican restaurants in the Southern Maryland area, so my review is based on what's available locally. Their prices are unmatched--by far the most affordable we've seen. Compared to Mexico Restaurant in White Plains, just up the road, we typically spend about half as much and receive larger portions at La Tolteca. The service is consistently good, the food arrives quickly, and we've never had to wait more than five minutes for a table. There's also a bar located at the back, along with plenty of seating throughout the restaurant. Whoever is writing these reviews are LYING!! First time trying and only did because so many people were walking in decided to give it a try. People are nice however the guac taste and smell like it came from a bag/ not fresh and tasteless.. no salt no lime no onions.. I expected it to be house made giving the look of the restaurant. Also ordered chicken and shrimp fajitas, it looked nice but upon tasting it it was flavorless, no salt no seasoning. Very disappointing I will not be back!! read more

This is the perfect place if you're looking for quick and inexpensive Mexican food. My family has visited this place a few times and the kids love filling up on the free chips and dip that come free, but I would definitely recommend ordering some of the white cheese to go with them! It is delicious and they give you a bunch so you can also pour some of the cheese on your meal. During this visit we tried their seasonal watermelon margarita and they are amazing! Its a must try, if you like to drink. My husband ordered the carne asada tacos and poured some of the white sauce on it....he finished those things quick!!! I had the huevos con chorizo lunch special (it came with wraps, which I didn't get in the attached picture). It was a huge portion for being a lunch special so I ended up taking half home for later. Went out for a night on the town with my girlfriends and we stumbled across La Tolteca. We were quoted a 40 minute wait but they were able to shave it down to just 20. I grabbed a rice combo sort of dish and it was impeccable. Our server was very polite, although I unfortunately can't remember her name. The only note I have is that the food took quite a while to come out. We had already downed our drinks before the appetizer even came out and that was a pain. Went on a Saturday drive to MD for some Mexican food. Did some searching and ended up in La Plata at La Tolteca. Not disappointed at all and worth the trip, lunch specials on a Saturday too. I got half a beef tip chimichanga w/refried beans and a watermelon margarita. Very filling, beans had cheese, chimi was topped with lettuce and sour cream. The margarita tasted just like watermelon, yummy. Elroy got a ground beef enchilada and taco, with rice n beans. Received 2 rounds of chips, salsa was sweet and fresh ( as in made today). Need a calm Taco Tuesday to go to? Then La Tolteca is the spot to go! My bestie and I got the birria taco special which was recommended by one of the locals, who seem excited this restaurant was seeing new customers. And for good reason because I'm sure I'm going to become a new regular with the tacos we stuffed our face with. If you not familiar with birria tacos, it's beef fried tacos packed with all of the heavenly goodness like chopped onions, cilantro, cheese and plenty of seasoning. The broth the beef was cooked in is used as a dipping sauce (which is to live for) paired with green salsa and Spanish rice. Top it off with a heavy handed margarita and your Taco Tuesday will be sufficient. The staff is extremely welcoming and courteous and kept our drinks full. The service is great! Our waitress was very kind and precise with our orders and also checked on us multiple times to see if we need anything throughout our meal. The food is delicious and flavorful! It was brought out quickly and is always hot, ready to eat soon after placing our order. The strawberry margarita was so good but the watermelon margarita has a flavor to be desired. We haven't eaten in the restaurant, so my review is based purely on take-out (so the front staff service and food itself). Tolteca has become our go-to for my wife and I when we don't feel like cooking. The food has always been what's expected and worth the price. We've probably ordered from there two dozen times now and the food has always been the correct order and hot when we picked it up. The staff has always been pleasant and quick, even on nights when they're crowded. When it comes to Mexican food, this is the closest we've found (in MD, VA, and DC) that matches the food we're used to on the southern border in California, and we love it. Food recommendations: Every pork and steak dish we've ordered has been great, but the ground beef and meatless options seemed to lack flavor. I'm partial specifically to the birria and my wife the chicken tamales. The green salsa is spicier than you'd expect Great chips, as far as chips go. We always order additional bags. The cheese dip is a watery consistency, but still has good flavor. read more

I came here for a bday invite for my cousin. Honestly, was really impressed with the fast service and how delicious my food was when it came out. The place definitely authentic and just welcoming. My group was large and the waiter was very patient and gave great recommendations. My drinks were super strong, like I like them to be. Also, I ordered the Texas fajitas which came with shrimp, beef, and chicken. My husband had a burritos and ate all of it. It was really good, again the food tasted like a nice home cook meal to me. This Mexican restaurant was great at all, but the thing is after I'm a be burrito I don't know if the waitresses could hear me screaming in the bathroom but it really hurt. I didn't have food poisoning anything but my stomach was hurting for a few days. I wasn't hospitalized, but I had to take a few medicines and everything was good. It took a little long to understand what they were saying. I don't know Mexican like that. I do take Spanish class with my family but everything was good and all except the fact that I made a broken toilet seat from taking a poop. We probably ate here at least two to three times a month , if not more, and we are familiar with most of the staff from being regulars. We planned to have dinner here with my mom and sister the other day and joined their table about 15 min. after they were seated because we were running late. My mom informed the server that they had 2 more coming. When we got there and sat down, the server "Justino" never returned to the table. My husband made eye contact with him several times but he would not even get within 10 feet of our table. We waited 30-45 minutes for him to return, and nothing, so we asked a nearby server "Armando" if he could get our server. He called out his name, and he came over with a huge attitude and was extremely rude to us and told us that he will not be serving us because there are other people waiting to be seated and we cannot jump the line and join a table. First, the wait for a table was 15 minutes. We had already been waiting nearly 40. If he told my parents that we couldn't join when they said they had 2 more coming , or even when we got there and sat with them, we would've had no problem putting our name on the list and waiting to be seated with my parents. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, as we wouldn't be jumping anyone considering that we're joining a table already seated. I didn't mine waiting longer for food, but I'm pregnant and after nearly an hour of waiting there I was dying of thirst. But he didn't say anything to us or my parents he just ignored us for the entire time. My mom hadn't even ordered an extra side that she wanted because he never came back after seeing us join the table, and when she said this to him his answer was "I already closed your check after you ordered. It's done." and he walked away from the table without even letting us finish. The server Armando scolded him for the way he was talking to us and told him that he can't talk to customers that way. Armando was extremely friendly and was apologizing for the other serves attitude. He let us know that he will be informing the owner and offered to take our orders. At this point, I didn't even want to eat anymore so I declined. The worst part was, we knew Armando told the owners and they didn't come out to apologize or anything. They know us as we are regulars, so this really surprised me and showed me that they don't care about customers at all. Mexico Restaurant offers Coctel de Camarón anyway, so that's another reason to go there from now on instead. read more

First off, let me say the wife and I were longtime fans of La Tolteca restaurant in Waldorf before it closed down about 3 years ago because of the pandemic. As they specialized in Mexican cuisine, we went to various places trying to find good authentic Mexican food, but could "get no satisfaction" (Insert Rolling Stones song here!) We had just left the Blue Crabs game, so since we were hungry, we decided to try La Tolteca in La Plata. To use a baseball term, "They knocked It out of the park!" The food, service, ambience, price, overall dining experience was excellent. I normally would give a review of the food, but why read about it when you can drive over there, and judge for yourself. This is a good and fast Mexican restaurant. The menu is pretty big with a decent lunch menu. The service is pretty fast for lunch, which is a big plus if you are in a hurry. I definitely love that more salsa is brought without having to ask for it. I need to ask if they have a spicy version. The portions are large and plentiful. The food tastes good too. When I asked the waiter what happened he said he gave me something else because he THOUGHT IT MATCHED BETTER TO WHAT I WAS WANTING.
