The service has gone way DOWNHILL. Customer service is -5 and although the food was good the service was so bad I couldn't even eat. The first waitress was so annoyed with is asking to sit in the back with our grandsons so they didn't have room to run around (small cozy restaurant) so she stuck us in a corner booth and when we put our stuff on a table (the one we couldn't sit at cause they were short staffed and suddenly we gotta move our stuff in case a bigger party comes Our waitress was slow, not friendly and seemed irritated with us and tried up charging for everything smal thing. We wanted a soft taco for the kids meal so they said it was $1 extra to swap a crunchy. If we wanted more lemon for our water that would be extra too. Then on the bill they charged extra under the tax. It was 4 of us adults and it said $$4A so when I questioned the staff she said it was tax. No it was an additional charge under the $6 tax . The customer service is great! The food is pretty good, but I've definitely had like better at other Mexican restaurant's. So really, I would rate this four stars however when I went, the place was kind of like dirty. The waitress originally wanted to sit us at a table that was clean, but had napkins and chips all over the floor. I don't really know what happened because typically when I go here the place is like really clean however, this time the floor was just pretty gross. Maybe they were having a bad day. read more

As someone who grew up in Texas and New Mexico moving to a place like Maryland that's mostly known for seafood I've been trying various Mexican places since moving here in 2017. This was one of the first ones that I can 100% say I'd eat there again. We got steak fajitas and enchiladas Yolandas with beans and rice. Everything was incredible and the portions were great. You should go here if you want to ruin your night. The service was unbelievably horrendous. My boyfriend spilled the beer that they had just brought him, and they refused to replace it unless he wanted to pay for another one.. It would have been common courtesy after us already buying so many drinks. When the food came out it was so bland and flavorless. Never have I been served a quesadilla with refried BEANS in it.. To top the night off after we had paid they brought the card back out split in HALF. And they want to claim that it broke in the reader.. Very disappointing and rude staff. I ordered queso to go for $4 and it was not even good. As seen in the photo, it was a tiny amount and did not even come with chips or salsa. The worst taco salad on the the planet...gross and upsetting. A taco salad here is hot shredder iceburg lettuce with (boiled?) unflavored grey ground beef with a bit of white cheese and sour cream Dreadful tasting and also incredibly ugly When you order a taco salad, it's a safe assumption the salad is.....a salad! With maybe some diced tomatoes, maybe some onions....it was a hot bowl of bland grey weirdness. The Jumbo margarita is worse. A comically silly huge glass of inedible sickening sour mix. I've been twice now, super disappointed with the drinks and food that I ordered ...but it is a absolutely adorable, clean, efficient and well staffed place. The crew is awesome. Really nice and fast server's and chef's. Great ambiance, great feel overall...just horrible margaritas and the worst taco salad known to man. My husband has had many other dishes and they were awesome...yet he agrees my experience was sub par. So... Go with the staples. Don't get a house margarita ever. Excellent dinner with my daughter. Dined in. Tables were generously spaces between other diners since we dined during restrictions. All tables were not in use. We had some tasty margaritas to start. The restaurant is doing a very good job with distancing and sanitation. Very pleasant lunch on the patio. The food: I had the Tacos de pescado (fish tacos). They were excellent. If I could give it less than one star I would. After waiting for a table which is to be expected on a Saturday night we were seated far back near the restrooms. After ordering we waited at least 45 minutes for our food to arrive. My order was incorrect and the server was indignant that I was wrong. Which I was not. I requested the correct item. Been to La Tolteca many times, and to be honest thought I had written a review. Apparently not, so here it is. What is not to like? The chips and salsa they bring out are a great start and honestly anything we've ever tried on the menu has been great! My personal "go to" is the Beef Steak Adobado; covered with special chipotle sauce with Spanish rice, refried beans, tortillas and guacamole salad. Though honestly, anything with their chipotle sauce would be awesome. Friendly, welcome staff, good food, good drinks - what more is there to say? It's Mexican food served quickly. We went on a Saturday evening and service was quick, very attentive and helpful. They definitely get 5 stars. Also, they have great horchata (rice drink). See photo because they know how to serve it and know it needs to be in a big cup since they make it so well. They also get 5 stars for the fried ice cream. I am not sure what the outside coating is but it's nice and crunchy. The flavor contrasts perfectly with the ice cream in the middle. I also love how it's drizzled in chocolate- NOT drowning in it. And, whipped cream and a cherry on top, all served in a taco shell for less than $4? Yes please! Next up is the tamale- server piping hot and stuffed with shredded chicken. It was covered in red enchilada sauce and a delicious white sauce. I wish I took a picture but I dove right in. And no, not greasy at all. What did other posters order?But warning: the tamale is small. Like, 5 bites and you're done small. It rivals a good sized chicken tender in size. The Spanish rice and refried beans were good. Nothing special, it's just good old rice & beans. I think it was the 68, but hubby ordered a gigantic burrito stuffed with grilled steak, chicken and shrimp. Rice, beans and salady stuff on the side. He loved every bite. For less than $12, it's also amazing to say half the plate was perfect since he has a hefty, fresh lunch for himself tomorrow. The tomatillo sauce or salsa verde said hot- if you know heat, this isn't hot. Maybe because his was grilled, it wasn't greasy at all! Although I give 5 stars, one area of improvement I would suggest is adding passion fruit juice and coco soda to the lineup of tasty sodas available. It really was a pleasure seeing tamarind and mango sodas, Jamaica and tamarind agua frescas, and non-alcoholic daiquiris. PLEASE KEEP THESE OPTIONS THERE FOREVER. But maybe keep some coco Rico cans ready for that once in a blue moon customer like me. *if you've never tried mango soda. Try it. *If you like iced tea but never tried Jamaica, try it. *If you like rice pudding, try horchata as a drink. Take advantage of the cheap but wide selection of authentic traditional drinks they have available. My wife and I were looking for a New Mexican restaurant to try. We found La Tolteca and decided to give it a whirl. Well, unfortunately neither of us were impressed. The food was moderately bland, and the I was very let down. I ordered the Enchilada Supreme and expected a little more than just 4 enchiladas and some Lettuce. Also I ordered a chalupa and it essentially was an open face vegetarian taco. If you are going to change what things are then you need to put that in the menu. Will probably not returning. read more
