Half eaten- we were hungry! Sorry!
    Tanya J.

I wish I could give this place 3 and a half stars! My party of 13, including myself, came here after a wake. We all traveled from Boston, Philly, ATL, and Montreal for this somber occasion. After the wake, there weren't many options that would satisfy our tastebuds, so we decided to go Haitian since that's what we are! Madame Tranquilite took care of us. We were a bit reluctant since the place didn't really look the best, the lady who seated us seemed to be unpleasant, and we are ALL used to Haitian restaurants being subpar from our respective cities (either over priced and horrible food) but we were pleasantly surprised. The menus are incredibly small, and the small frames they're in are gross to the touch. We all settled on different fritalles and some fish. Not only did the food come out rather quickly, it was pretty damn good! I would give more stars, but it just needs to be revamped and cleaned up more.

Great food. If you planning to order food to go, call in before arriving to the restaurant, so it can be an in & out process. If you go there without ordering, the wait time is about 20 mins, so view the menu photo prior in going there. I tried other restaurants near by and they are how I can say nicely, 'selfish, lazy or rip off', but this place haven't disappoint me yet. That is a very good sign regarding that alone. Their portions are quite large for which you can share with a second person. If you plan, to eat this solo, then your new years resolution will be to go on a strict diet. :-) Bon appétit

Herring breakfast with all the fixings... provisions and more.

So I just moved to my new neighborhood in West BubbleFlip aka Canarsie. Lol. Listen, I moved from the Stuy alright. There's a buzz of millennials that just fits my aesthetic. But Bedstuy is way too expensive now. Back to review... So I walked in on a Sunday between brunch hours where apparently they are closed but the quick order window wasn't. I was told they still serving breakfast, I didn't mind one bit since I had nothing in my stomach all morning. The restaurant was empty and lights were low as they were setting up for lunch. I saw an middle aged woman sitting at the corner checking out papers and numbers. This cued me into, ohhhh that's the owner. Mind you, I've never had Haitian food in my life! I'd repeat that for emphasis if I need to. Lol I asked if I can sit at the dinning area since I did realized I was more hungrier than expected. Ordering: I'm Trini so I stuck to what I knew. I ordered the Herring breakfast with Maiz and a homemade lemonade to the side. The food took a little bit to come out so I made conversation with the owner. Which she introduced herself as Ms. Augustine. She told me she's owed the place for 20 something years. I was amazed. Most restaurants go belly up after 3. This got me even more excited to taste this food because 20 something years is a milestone especially for this industry. You must be doing something right! The food came out and the staff went the extra mile to give me house made hot sauce. It was a meal fit for a Queen; like myself. The herring came with boiled Plantains, lettuce, sweet potato (the white one), steamed carrot, and a boiled egg on the side. The maiz or cornmeal was brown. It was different and I was not use to this breakfast but it tasted so good! But I'm always gamed to try new foods. With one bite of the herring and plantain, I was instantly time hopped and transported back to Trinidad as a young girl; sitting at the breakfast table with family. The flavors were well balanced and perfectly seasoned. I don't know how the kitchen staff pull it off with the different ingredients the states have to offer, and still have the dish tasting like you've never left your homeland. That astounds me! Overall the food is excellent and I'd definitely come back for more. For 7 bucks it's so worth it. You get your bang for your buck! Plus, Ms. Augustine was so warm and welcoming even as I gave a hug goodbye and told her the pepper sauce was the bomb! Yeahhh this was a perfect introduction to Haitian Cuisine. And that lemonade was the best darn lemonade I've had.... ever.

The food is good However they don't have AC so I wouldn't suggest for u to eat in and they are extremely extremely slow I place an order for 2 meals and had to wait 45 minutes which is a long time for something that should be already cooked or pre cooked The plantains were not so good but everything else was fine The picklese was very hot which I loved Oh and they need to improve on the side salad but I guess since it's free you can't ask for much

I've had bad experience here before but I went last night and things have improved drastically. The food was good. The customer service was good which was my main problem with them before. They recently change location & my friend was raving about it so I decided to give it another chance. I can't complain.

An order of griot comes with a salad, plantain, cup of sauce pois, gravy, and picklies all for $8. AMAZING

If you're in the mood for some "home cooked" Haitian cuisine, this is the place to go. You get good tasting, large portions for a more than reasonable price. I had 1 order of griot for $8 that can easily feed 2 people. The one complaint that I do have is that they always give a lot of rice compared to the meat..... The rice is good though. Even though they have a dining area I always get takeout. If you do decide to go there to dine, it's a casual setting so you don't have to get dressed up or anything.

$10 platter of fried turkey (Tasso den) and plantains (banan peze). The plate is empty.

This is one of the worst Haitian restaurants in Brooklyn and I'm a foodie. Their customer service is disgusting and they barely give you a decent amount of food for the price. I called and complained about the lack of food in my platter and was told "too bad". It took everything out of me to not return there and toss the sloppy platter and nasty tasting food over their counter. I am Haitian and disappointed to say that service like this is why our diaspora will always have difficulty advancing because they sometimes don't know to to treat their own. Never eating here again and I will spread the word.

The space is beautiful and very well decorated, and the servers were kind and knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered the djon djon rice bowl with oxtail, the fritay platter, and soup joumou, and we also tried the Sunday special with white rice and sos pwa. My dish came out after everyone else's, so I ended up taking it to go, which was disappointing. The fritay platter was a highlight. The plantains were crispy and the akra and marinade were well seasoned. My mom enjoyed her soup, but felt the sos pwa was a bit watery and could have been thicker. When I got home, the rice had a great texture but the aroma smelled slightly burnt, maybe they were going for a smoky flavor. The oxtail was well flavored, but I did find a small piece of plastic in my rice, which was concerning. Overall it was okay, but it did not blow me away. I have had better Haitian food at cookouts or family gatherings, though if this is your first time trying Haitian food, you may enjoy it.

It was my first time trying Haitian food and I was surprised at how similar it was to Spanish food. Every plate we ordered was very flavorful and unique in taste. The sauces that came with our dishes were spicy (just how I like it) but so unique in spice too. I could have drank the sauces. There was nothing that we didn't like! The drinks were also simple, very light and yummy - not too sweet. The vibes of the restaurant were also very cute and dimly lit (but not too dim). They gave us the best seat in the house too - the corner window booth with views of the entire floor. It was a perfect date night! Will definitely be coming back and highly recommend if you're looking to eat some delicious Haitian food!

I can prove my Haitian ethnicity by cooking traditional dishes. The legume was on point! That dish was my favorite. My friend truly enjoyed her salmon. Honestly, I wish I had gotten the salmon to take home instead of the Haitian fried chicken. Now, that wasn't that great to me, and I didn't enjoy it :( I'm still giving them all the stars and all the props because I really appreciated the service. This was my first time trying a Haitian patty with spinach, and it was absolutely fantastic. I think it's even better than the chickpea one. I would definitely highly recommend this place and also go back. But the Haitian fried chicken need to be better. Still, I'll definitely come again and try the salmon next time!!!

I ordered the vegan platter whose black beans were smooth and piping hot, alongside the crispy fried tostones and meaty vegan meatballs. In fact the meatballs were so meat-like that neither my sister nor my husband could belief that they were made of jackfruit. The white rice was also extremely fluffy and moist and judging by the diligent rice-washing that was taking place behind the counter as we ate, I could tell that the staff really works hard to make it not just an afterthought, but a quality addition to the meal. My sister also really enjoyed her shrimp plate while my husband devoured his half-chicken platter. The sauces on our platters were also extremely flavorful, complementing the proteins in a beautiful way. All of us left Lakou Cafe feeling happy and satisfied with the portion sizes and level of quality. 10/10 I will definitely be heading back to this place the next time I'm in Brooklyn!

I can't put my finger on it but it didn't have a flavor of ANY blend of natural cheeses. I'd know, I'm a cheese connoisseur! Perhaps they use imitation cheese. Simply put, their macaroni au gratin is inauthentic as in no veggies (onions, bell peppers) nor ham or ground beef used either. At least the Diri Djon Djon and Lalo was decent. I've had better Salad Russe. It was either missing onions or salt. The condiment cup of Pikliz is shorter and smaller than the usual 1.5 oz. Most restaurants provide sizes 2 oz and larger and that's how I was able to tell the difference. I never even knew those solo dipping cups came any smaller! Probably so you can ask for more so they can charge extra. Not only do they make sure to cut corners on the Pikliz. Which wasn't even enough to mask their thick, brown, over-fried, DRY and STALE bannann peze that has been sitting out. After they cut the plantains they don't soak in salted water. Bannann peze SHOULD NOT be so thick, should be made-to-order and served hot, fresh, golden and crispy. Just look at their photos and see for yourselves compared to other bannann peze / tostones you've eaten / seen. Then to ask if I need utensils for a to-go order? No ma'am, I'll be using my fingers and eating out of my hands today, thanks for asking. Don't ask, just automatically include utensils in the bag for the astronomic amount you charge for your food. Chain restaurants or even mom & pops all simply include utensils and napkins when preparing to-go orders. Only time to get away with that is when delivering. At which most times customer may decline since they're home / work and may already have those items. Price point - garbage for side of macaroni au gratin I'll let you all be surprised for yourselves on the rest on menu. * If anyone gave this restaurant 5 stars... they're obviously not Haitian and/or their tastebuds are shot.

Nothing too special in taste, really bland, not even a hint of salt n pepper; even the pikliz didn't help. The Akra was good, and the sausage was good. I settled on Haitian food, and after some Googles I settled on Anmwey Eatery. The reviews were good and it was only a 5 minute drive from my mom's house. I ordered at the counter when I arrived. I knew I wanted griot (fried pork) with black rice, so that's what I ordered. They were busy, so my food took about 30 minutes to be ready. I was fine with the wait. The bar seats were comfy and I was on my phone. There was also loud reggae music playing from the other room, so I was jammin. I got home and dug into my food and it was almost perfect. The griot was delicious. Just crunchy enough on the outside and tender on the inside. The black rice was a little disappointing, but nothing major. I love black rice, but it lacked flavor. Luckily they give you a side of gravy, which was tasty. I should've taken the girl at the counter up on her offer to get an extra side of gravy. I still devoured everything though. It also came with fried plantain. I'm not a huge fan of unsweet plantain, but it was good when I added the picklez to it. Picklez is spicy, so tread lightly if you don't like heat. 5 stars for Anmwey. I will certainly return.
