From the moment we sat down, the energy and ambiance set the tone -- lively, authentic, and exactly what you hope for in a great Italian spot. The food was exceptional across the board. We always loved the informal yet the classic red and white checkered table cloth vibe of this restaurant. However, today was a disappointment both in service and food. Other than when we placed our order, and got our check, we didn't see our waitress. I know it was a busy Friday night, but I would expect at least 1 checkup of how we were doing or if we needed anything. Since there other staff available, I was able to ask the bus boy to get additional lemon or red pepper flakes for my meal. We usually order the pastas. Today we decided to get a pizza (Diavolo) and chicken piccata. The pizza was just Ok ( we have had better at other places) and the chicken piccata was dry (so I asked for lemon). We were disappointed in our meal. However, looking around other tables, some of the entrees looked amazing. There was pasta being made inside a cheese wheel. Looked great. Don't know if I will be back anytime soon. But if we do, we will order the pastas instead. read more

Once in a while I am pleasantly surprised by food that I'd think it's "run o' the mill". The seafood spaghetti was it. Not just your "drenched in marinara" and "toss in some shrimp" seafood pasta. That sauce was very delicious. The pizza was pretty good (sorry, for me, nothing has topped the mushroom pizza at My Pie in NYC). The table side Tiramisu was pretty OK as well. Service was pleasant. Great dining atmosphere right on fifth Avenue. This is an upscale Italian restaurant served at a reasonable price with great hospitality. This place also turns into a nightclub certain nights of the week and always brings great music and vibes. Drinks can be pricey the food between 20 and $40. So within reason for a decent Italian.. as I deal with all new Italian places I go to I ordered the lasagna as you can tell a lot about a place from their lasagna. It was dry with little sauce and was overcooked to where the pasta was hard. I'm sure there other dishes were great, but lasagna definitely was a letdown at the end of our meal. We are offered complementary lemon cello shots. Which was very nice and then asked for a Google review, but I stick with Yelp.:) definitely recommend checking this place out for a place to go out on the town as a nightclub possibly get something different from the lasagna maybe a pizza. Went here for dinner as we were debating against a couple of the many Italian places Naples has to offer. The staff was great and the more casual ambiance was what we were looking for. The complimentary bread accompanied with Parmesan was good and plenty. The appetizer meatballs were good size, came with 5-6, and very tasty - melted in your mouth. We also ordered a Caesar salad and the spaghetti carbonara. The Caesar salad was like any other Caesar salad - so nothing good or bad to comment on that. The disappointment with our experience was the spaghetti carbonara entree. It was quite bland and had way too much butter and olive oil, to the point that it was overwhelming and difficult to eat. Yesterday, Sept 3rd, was my birthday. Mrs. K wanted to take me out for supper. I came up with La Trattoria as a place I would like to try again. As I mentioned in my previous review, it is like going back to Italy. After this visit, I now have to go back and try two more dishes. The Chicken Parm looked terrific, and their Spaghetti Bolognese is not your typical American red sauce. The bolognese was not soaked in red sauce; it was almost coated. I had the pasta with black pepper and truffles. Prepared table-side. My first and last thought about the dish is how rich the sauce was. I have never encountered a sauce that rich. Went with my sister and all our kids for a late dinner. Arrived around 9 or so, our waitress was great, the food was great, drinks were awesome and the atmosphere was fun. Unfortunately, I left with a sour tasted in my mouth though because of a "security guard". Here is what happened: right before 11pm, we noticed that they started moving things around and a DJ booth popped up out of nowhere, the music got louder etc. As we were waiting for the bill and finishing our drinks, my 3 year old had to go to the bathroom so I took her. On our way back, literally as we were standing right next to our table, she started to dance to the music so I joined her. Immediately, the security guard came over to tell me that children were not allowed on the "dance floor". Excuse me? 10 minutes ago this was just FLOOR around my table. Through the loud music I tried to tell him we've been here the whole night, that I didn't come from a different area of the restaurant, and pointed to our table which was a foot away from me and he still argued with me that after 11, my child could not be on the so called dance floor. Mind you, there was NO ONE dancing or doing anything. I was very upset. My sister and I had just spend over $300 and it felt like all of a sudden, they wanted us out. But it's worth the wait. Inside they have the cutest rustic Italian aesthetic. They also offer some outdoor seating. The bar is popping. It's packed with people, and I can tell why. The music in there is vibing. They were playing some Spanish hits. Our server gave some great recommendations for the night but we opted for pizza. We had seen some pies coming out, and we just had to try it! We had the Margherita pizza which was absolutely delicious. It tastes like a real authentic Margherita pizza from Napoli. The red sauce had an amazing flavor. We also tried the Toscana pizza which was my personal favorite. It was so unique, a white pizza (no red sauce) with truffle ricotta, mozzarella, mortadella, pistachio, and lemon zest! It was an explosion of flavor! Started out with drinks and the optics were amazing from the Espresso Martini and Old-Fashioned with the right cherry and iceball to the beer. We've eaten here several times before. The food was always ok, service was usually good. Five of us ate here tonight and the food was just ok, but service was horrible. A member of our group went up 5th ave looking for someplace else to eat. Couldn't find anything so we stayed. Dinner reservation for 6:30, we ate at just before 8pm. Our server was overwhelmed and only came to our table every 15-20 minute. We were squeezed into a table for 4 and we were 5 big guys. This restaurant was incredible! The quality of food, level of service and the presentation are all on point. I had a hankering for pizza and this place didn't disappoint. I really love the presentation of bread. They tuck it away in a tomato can with the obligatory red and white checkered paper. The butter was darn good butter and served as rose molds. The pizza was incredible! I ordered the quattro formaggi but lost the Italian cold cut gracing the top. The combination of baked cheeses was epic and crust was divine. Our server was incredibly kind and took wonderful care of us. I can't recall her name, but I believe she was probably 19 or 20 and from Venezuela. The food is still great. The prices went up about 12% from September but the menu stayed more or less the same. Delicious. The problem that I experienced this time was service. I go there fairly often and this was the first time I had the problem with service. I always get the same pizza - Toscana with mortadella on the side - and mortadella always came on the side. This time around, it was on the pizza. No big deal, I put it to the side. Then I bite into pizza and it's missing pistachios. That's a larger deal since the flavors balance each other and all come together and when something is missing, the pizza just doesn't taste the same. I flag the server and tell him that pistachios are missing. He starts to argue that they are on the pizza. Then he says let me check the menu, they changed it so maybe pistachios are no longer on this pizza (which means he doesn't know the menu). He comes back with the menu and finally tells me - in a tone as if he were doing me a great favor - that he would take the pizza back to the kitchen so that they could put more pistachios. He does that, pizza comes back with pistachios and it tasted just like it always did - amazing. But I ask you, when you go to a place on 5th, do you expect to argue with your waiter or do you expect to have a wonderful experience facilitated by your waiter? And again, that was the first time when the service was subpar at La Trattoria.
