We were in town for a family event and after a full day we picked La Villa Mexican and had a great dinner. Juan and his family brought their family recipes from Mexico City here to Valrico and the food and service are great! We enjoyed these appetizers: - chips and salsa - street corn - guacamole for the chips We enjoyed these entrees: - street tacos - chicken, pork and fish - steak and shrimp fajitas - barilla tacos - carnitas plate - cochinita pibil The food, and the beer and wine, were incredibly good. Juan and his team provided wonderful service, and the chef even brought out one item she was, rightfully, proud to have created for us. We also took home one item - queso enchiladas - for someone who didn't come with us and who was still napping when we arrived, and she shared: "This is really good, ane that's an hour after (b/c nap) they made it!!" Ordered delivery from here. I ordered a steak burrito and some tamales. The burrito was very skimpy, stuffed with rice and very little steak. They charged extra for steak and barely put any in there. The amount of rice used, pretty much made up the entire burrito. It tasted like food from Moe's, not going to lie it was a big let down. I've been wanting to try this place for a long time but haven't because of the mixed reviews and the pics didn't quite convince me honestly. However, this Friday, I had a serious craving for Birria tacos, did not want to drive all the way to Tampa and all of the other Mexican spots close by only serve them on Saturday and Sunday! Just left the restaurant. It's a Friday night and it's NOT busy. We ordered street corn app and waited 30 plus minutes and when we got it - it looked like slop on a plate. Not a lot of toppings. Looked like they threw it over a flame for a second and that was it. When we sent the corn back the waiter said "Yeah, the kitchen is behind tonight so they just kind of threw it out." Like what? I can't even say quantity over quality was a factor because you get a dollar store metal buckets worth of chips. And then you have to pay for the 2nd round. Took over an hour for our food to come. We ordered 3 street carnitas tacos, a carnitas torta, tortilla soup, and a kids meal flautas. The food we all were served was very lukewarm. The tortilla soup was cold and very offputting. No flavor - WAYYY to much cilantro. Flautas was very dry. Carnitas meat was ok but overall it just was not good at all. I'm very disappointed and will not be coming back to this establishment. If the waiter would have given us a little bit more attention as far as letting us know updates on the street corn and dinner I would have given 3 stars.. but that was not that case. read more

I am not confident that this was Mexican. The food is okay, inauthentic, and primarily American in flavor. I wouldn't mistake referring to the food as having an American taste for Tex-Mex. It's not Mexican or Tex-Mex by any stretch of the imagination. The dining experience wasn't great, but acceptable given the post-pandemic impacts affecting the restaurant industry. The staff is primarily teenagers who do their best to serve a busy restaurant. La Villa is a primarily take-out restaurant attempting to transition to full service. The chips and salsa were delicious but I absolutely do not recommend ordering any dish with chicken. Both my order of the chicken tacos and my friend's order of the chicken fajitas were made with the same completely unseasoned pieces of dry, lukewarm chicken. The same kind of chicken I would expect on a cheap salad from a non-Mexican restaurant. Just very strange to have unseasoned, flavorless chicken as a major protein option at a Mexican restaurant. What happened to this place? It used to be good. We arrived 15 min before close and they treated us like lepers. So incredibly rude. They should have told us they were closing when we walked in. We went to this restaurant for our first time a couple of weeks ago. Loved it! Nice decor, friendly workers, good food. We had loaded pork tamales which were good. The meat & corn proportions were good. I really hate it when I get tamales that's mostly made of corn around it & barely any meat. I love their jalapeño cream sauce. Their tortilla chips were yummy, but the salsa was just ok. I got the cochinita pibil, which was pretty good. My husband got al pastor burrito, which was AMAZING!! This authentic Mexican restaurant has been around a long time -- at least 10 years in the Valrico/Brandon area. If you're looking to step up to quality Mexican fare, you ought to expand your palate right here. We weren't very daring in trying Chicken Tortilla soup and some traditional tamales with chicken. Chips were served with a nice, but thin salsa while you waited for your meal.. The chips seemed homemade and not the usual crisp ones some Mexicans serve, but we're OK.. The chicken tamales were freshly steamed in a corn husk and made a nice presentation. The tamales could have been spicier, but dipping in the tortilla soup spiked up the taste a bit. The place looks like more of a Wish.com ice cream joint, although it did have a few cool Dia De Muerte objects...but that's the only way you could tell it's a Mexican restaurant. The two severs I had were confused and acted like they wanted to be anywhere in the world except in that restaurant. Came here for lunch. Let me just say I chose this place based on reviews, it's right next to my sons preschool and I usually love smaller restaurants for that delicious home cooked food. Nope. Not here. I was served the tiniest bucket of chips that were so chewy. They had no crunch to them whatsoever. The salsa.. tasted like it was a can of diced tomatoes just poured into a little dish. One of the best Mexican food places in town. La Villa Mexican Grill is a small restaurant in Valrico with big flavors. The first thing you will notice is the chips and salsa that you typically expect to get from any Mexican restaurant. The salsa here is house made and you can really tell a difference. The menu here is pretty standard, and you can expect to find everything you would expect from this style of restaurant. The overall food quality here is very above par for most restaurants like this and the ingredients that they use here exude authenticity. I ordered chipotle chicken nachos and they were amazing and very cheap. The restaurant itself is very small and intimate. I came by on the weekend so soccer was on tv. The staff was very friendly and the service was pretty quick. The prices here are very good also. This place will be my go-to for Mexican food in the future. read more

Ok so if you read my reviews you will notice that Mexican is kind of my thing. I make it fresh at home, I obsess over finding the best. La Villa is the highest quality Mexican I have ever tasted. Everything from the chips to the salsa to the refried beans are made fresh and the difference is amazing! Having eaten at 100's of Mexican restaurants I judge each one on its shrimp cocktail. Seems overly simple but it is one dish that freshness and quality reign supreme. The one that Juan the owner made for me was awesome! Slightly sweet, vibrant citrus tastes competing with the onion and cilantro, just as it should be. My entree was the alambres. Good cuts of meat and fresh vegetables made it really good. It could have used more veggies but it was still very good. My Wife chose the steak burrito. My exact words were holy shit that is good upon trying a bite. It was covered in a queso and had plenty of house made Mexican cream ( a better version of sour cream) all of the ingredients were of course fresh and of a very high quality. The only thing I did not try that I wanted to was the flan. We were full by the time we left and the children were running amok. ( plus I did not notice if they even had it) In order to ensure this level of quality the menu is slightly limited and the portions are smaller than you might expect but the food is well worth the sacrifice. I decided to follow the advice of some of my neighbors to try this place along with Yelp reviews. I want to start by saying I have no idea how they have this high of a rating. We had the steak fajitas- meat was not seasoned really at all and very tough and chewy(not pleasant in a taco setting) the vegetables were fine as it was just grilled vegetables. The corn tortillas were fine. They don't give you cheese all you get is a very small amount of salsa and sour cream( enough for 2 tacos if you use it sparingly) We also had the Shrimp Tacos. They were very bad, the shrimp was super tough and chewy and tasted weird( had to be frozen bag shrimp) once again corn tortillas were fine (tasted like heated up store bought ones) The kids wanted floutitos- supposedly cheese and chicken, ours were just filled with dry chicken very bad. Also the sides of rice and beans that came with some of the meals were straight bad. I have never had such bad rice and beans but it clearly comes from a bag and they heat it up. If not they may want to change the recipes. The chips and salsa (first one is free then 2.00 per refill) were just super disappointing. The chips were hard and not salted at all and the salsa was mainly just sauce with no flavor and a hint of heat. I hate giving 1 star reviews and generally feeling like I'm dumping on a place, but it truly represents my feelings. Service was fast and friendly but in the end it's about the food and I am mind Blown how this place is as highly rated on Yelp as it is. read more

On the recommendation of not one but two local friends, we drove out to Valrico on a Friday afternoon to give it a try. It's tough to find if you're not looking because it's hidden in a nondescript little strip mall off the main road. But it's sooooooo worth finding. We were greeted warmly and sat at one of the few tables (less than a dozen). We started with cold beers and the guacamole. The chips, guacamole and salsa are all made in-store and what a difference. All three were tasty. I ordered the cochinita pibil, a Baja California favorite of mine, and she had the chilaquiles...scrambled, of course. Please don't chastise us for ordering a traditional breakfast meal for dinner--she just had to try them! Everything arrived hot and fresh and was truly delicious. Even the little side salad with my meal tasted homemade. When I mentioned that, Luis (the owners' nephew) responded, "Well, of course--it's all made here by hand!" Luis stated that his aunt selected fresh produce every morning and that personal dedication shows in all of the details. The owners are originally from Mexico City but have been here a long time. The menu choices reflect traditional dishes from Mexico's interior that you won't find at other restaurants. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Everything from the food, to the service to the reasonable pricing is top notch. We'll be returning to try other menu items. I came here based upon Yelp reviews. Was surprised how poor our experience was. Server was unfriendly as can be, never cracked a smile and barely spoke. I don't understand the 4 star rating. I work too hard to waste my hard earned money at a place that is obviously concerned with food cost over value. For example, the chicken nachos had 3 tiny bites of chicken. The steak burrito had shaved pieces of beef, at most 1.5 ounces of beef in the burrito. They fill the burrito with cheap rice and canned black beans, and add cheese sauce so people believe they are getting a good value due to its size. The food cost on that burrito is barely even 10%. My Dad owns a restaurant in the Florida Panhandle, his food cost is almost 40% and it shows. I know what I'm getting when I dine out and can handle things not being perfect, I care about entrepreneurs trying their best in hard times. I don't like when I see something like this. Cheap ingredients that are overpriced is not the right way to do business. read more

I have write another review here - just as great! You need to try their Taco Al Pastor and get side of their Arbol hotsauce (best hotsauce) and Jalapeno queso sauce. Add both to your Tacos, it's amazing. The usual order includes 3 tacos but you can ask for more. These taco's are also great if you are going to having people over - order a few. I have also added picture off the Tacos with both sauces (I had already eaten the other 2 - lol) and a nice cold beer. Their soups and burritos are great as well! I'm so happy that I finally found an amazing authentic Mexican grill. From start to finish service was amazing. Was very accommodating. We got the Taco Tuesday special. Steak tacos were perfect. Exactly how I like them. I wouldn't change anything. Alambre meal was also very tasty even though some pieces had a lot of fat on it. I wasn't discouraged since it was easy to pick out.
