When I walked in, I was greeted, but other than that I wasn't told about the menu or any specials. But everyone was very friendly. The ambience was OK. It was somewhat of a Mexican-style interior. Nothing flashy. So when I was told what type of food they had they had Carnitas. And that's all they had. I was asking if I could have it with eggs or in a burrito and they said all they were offering that day were tacos. Don't get me wrong. The meat was very good very soft tender, but that's all it was. They said they couldn't make burritos and they couldn't put eggs or anything else with the meat until the following day. Which made no sense. However, the meat was very good and they put plenty of meat in the taco which was the equivalent of 2 1/2, it was a lot of meat. This is my opinion, and you will have to go there to form your own opinion. But I probably won't go back in the future. read more

I usually buy extra salsas because i love salsa and 2 horchatas. I never cared for horchata till i tried it at this restaurant. Now i need to have one every time i come here. The food is always fresh, super hot, and tastes delicious! The service is good too. there is sometimes a line to order but it moves quick! Sometimes they have special value items like burritos which i plan to try next! This restaurant is not overly priced either! I pay like $34 for all the items i mentioned! What an experience! for under 12 dollars, I got a half pound of carnitas, rice, beans and tortillas! The meat was freshly cut put my order! The tortillas were fresh, hot and homemade! Great to get freshly made tortillas rather than store made! The food was all yummy! The workers were supper friendly! Also very helpful for my first visit! We didn't know what we were doing or what to order, but the staff was super friendly and gave us a sample when they found out it was our first time. This place is legit and you can tell by the line out the door early in the morning! We ordered the 2 lb. (All meat) Combo that comes with rice, beans and fresh made....yes fresh made tortillas! The food was for 3 and it was good for lunch, dinner and snacks in between. The meat was cooked to perfection and was very moist and flavorful. I believe this is a local chain called Carnitas el Rey, with a couple of different locations include this one in Moorpark. I have only been to Moorpark twice and I have eaten here twice. This is one of those places where you basically can order carnitas by the pound, with beans, rice, tortillas and salsa, plus drinks. You can choose to have just meat, or meat plus skins and fat and other deliciousness. That is pretty much all they have. It's cheap and delicious. It isn't too busy on weekends during lunchtime and there are a few outdoor tables where you can chill and eat your carnitas. We will be back next time we are in Moorpark. read more

I finally made it in. I was not sure how to place the order for 3 of us but the gentleman preparing the meal offered a suggestion and it was taken. We did go during rush hour and the sauces were emptied but they quickly refilled them which was great. I did enjoy the tacos and my son also enjoyed it. One of my favorite lunch spots in Moorpark. It's simple, affordable and absolutely delicious. Every part of the dish is authentic and full of flavor. I like the single combo plate with all meat and mild salsa. The amount of food is perfect for the number of fresh corn tortillas. The rice and beans could have a bit more spice or flavor but they are just right as toppings inside your self made taco. I love the fast and courteous service here! The carnitas is as good as everyone says! There was a line out the door, took about 10 minutes to get to my turn to order. I was the only one who ordered in English but they understood and spoke to me in English. They were out of Pico de Gallo and horchata. I was recommended the onions & cilantro, green salsa and pickled jalapeños when I asked which salsa is less spicy. I took home my order of 1/2 lb carnitas with 6 extra tortillas. Adults and kids loves this meal and ate till there was none left. We did add more beans and corn of our own, as their portion of rice and beans was small compared to the meat. Many carnitas restaurants leave the meat in the fat, which makes them extremely oily.The handmade tortillas make the ideal tacos, and the meat is juicy and well seasoned. Horchata and Jamaica are equally genuine as they get. I can honestly state that it's as authentic as it gets because I'm from Michoacan. They provided excellent service from the moment we came in. This place is amazing. They do 1 thing and they do it well. Carnitas by the pound or in tacos. I opted for 2 pounds of meat. It comes with rice, beans, tortillas and your choice of salsas. You order and they start to pull out the meat and chop it up. Then they employee asks if you want all meat or mixed. Mixed is some of the skin and other parts of the pig, the good stuff. The meat is juicy with some crispy crunchy bits. The beans are boiled and not refried. The have great flavors. The rice has nice flavor. The corn tortillas are big and house made. Even the salsa is great. I opted for the red salsa, it's spicy but the heat doesn't overpower the meat, it enhances the flavor. If you want great carnitas come check them out. read more

I've had carnitas El Rey in Oxnard many times, however while stopping by to pick up Chinese takeout from Yue Yan restaurant, I noticed this new carnitas El Rey next door? Weird I'll bet it's been here a long time and I just never looked twice every time I came to Yue Yan next door. I thought I'd give it a try? Inside it looks essentially the same except I didn't see a scale like they have at Oxnard. Aside from that I think it's essentially the same although I wonder if the tortillas are not a little different? Overall the folks were super friendly and I'll be going back again cuz this is a substantially closer to me in Westlake Village then going down to Oxnard. Much faster because it's right off the 118 freeway too compared to Oxnard which is much further off the 101 freeway So why 4 stars? It's all for the yummy carnitas family pack. It's unfortunate we can't sit down however, let's be real because this is essentially "fast food" but very high quality fare. Plus the menu is very narrow. It's good but not orgasmic enough to compensate for the narrow single dimensional menu or humble environment. I've really enjoyed some narrow menu places which offered more variety and rather "high mark" dining ambiance and table service. They only earned 4 stars. I bestow 5 Stars to establishments which deliver a well rounded and superb orgasmic dining experience. So it's really really great here ... No doubt. Yummy delicious and super nice folks ... Just as a next step it's better if they had more than just yummy carnitas. Or maybe not? Maybe it's just fine with a narrow menu? (Wink) read more
