Our waiter was friendly (though a bit salesy) and pretty attentive by Italian standards. Ambiance (4.5/5): Unlike most restaurants in Italy, no al fresco dining here. Which is not a loss because it has a beautiful interior. You feel like you're in an underground cave. Unique and comfortable. Drinks (4.5/5): We went with some house prosecco (one liter). I love how house wine is the norm in Italy. Solid wine for a solid price. What more can you want? They also have 4 Euro beer and spritz to-go. I went with the beer which made for a nice companion on my walk to the train station from the restaurant. Food (4/5): We went with the cotoletta (veal breaded cutlet) with fries and the tagliatelle pasta with duck ragu. The cutlet was bone-in which was a bit unusual but flavorful and fried just right. This place was recommended by our hotel and the food was amazing however from the start of our afternoon reservation through our dining experience they would have been better off telling us they were full . We could have gone somewhere else. The waiter pretended not to understand English at our table yet at another spoke fluid English. We were ignored most of the evening and when asked for the bill we waited forever as if we didn't exist. Mind you we spoke several sentences in Italian to be polite and fit in. We came here on the recommendation of our hotel. We arrived a little late for dinner so we had a short wait for a table. The service was pretty good except our waiter wasn't very friendly. But it was fine he wasn't rude or anything. I had the Spaghetti alla Vongoli and my husband ordered what the waiter said was a typical Venetian pasta with anchovies. He told my husband that the dish is a little salty but he ordered it anyway because he wanted to try anchovies. I've had anchovies on a pizza and also with a Ceasar salad. I'm not a big fan. A little goes a long way. Well as I expected, my husband wasn't loving his choice. He tried adding some olive oil and eating some bread with it but didn't help much. We called ahead before coming to make sure there'd be a table for us, and it was no problem. On a cold Friday night in February, the restaurant was pretty busy but still had a few tables open. Service was good. Here's what we ate: - caprese salad: 5 stars. Excellent fresh mozzarella, tasty tomatoes, arugula, all drizzled with olive oil. - zuppa de pesce (fish/seafood soup): 5 stars. Flavorful, not too fishy tasting, and lots of mussels! Also had shrimp and crawfish. - grilled eel with polenta: 5 stars. The eel was delicious and crispy, had a few little rows of bones but no biggie. The polenta was mildly flavored. - choco-nocciola cake: 5 stars. This canal side tavern was packed with both locals and tourists the night we came. If you're looking for more of an ambiance, request seating in the downstairs area with the low vaulted brick ceilings than the upstairs which was kinda pedestrian looking with just wooden tables and chairs. We've decided to skip ordering pizza and just focus on seafood EVERYTHING! after all, we're in Venice and naturally, seafood should be top quality and affordable, right? I was correct on both accounts: from the sarde in saor (sardines with onions, raisins, pine nuts in olive oil), gamberoni alla griglia (grilled prawns with polenta) to the classic frutti di mare (seafood pasta) our dishes were absolutely fresh and delicious. It would be a shame to miss out on their spaghetti alle seppie nere (cuttlefish squid ink pasta) while in Venice, and this taverna's version is life changing: cuttlefish that's soft but still has a bite to it, the sauce has a bit of a kick from the chili and the squid ink has this unique flavor profile, sort of like iodine taste and briny. It pairs soooo well with pasta. It's hard to find an Italian restaurant in the U.S. that does it well and taverna's version is off the charts. Just a word of caution, the ink is thick and will coat your teeth for some time during dinner. Came back twice because there were things on the menu I really wanted to try from all the reviews! It was good, but I'm actually surprised at all the hype. I was told Venice was THE place for seafood and while the seafood I had did taste fresh, I thought overall my dishes were just ok. I had the squid ink pasta with the cuttlefish, the Bavette alla Busera and the linguini with white clam sauce while the fiance had the pizza (humongous!), truffle ravioli and a chicken dish. All were just fine - not bad, but nothing to write home about. The saving grace (for me) and the main reason for the 4 stars was the TIRAMISU! I LOVED that dessert! We were here twice and had 3! We got really lucky to be able to get in here twice even though we thought it was ok because there were always tons of people waiting to get in. The first time we were super lucky and got in with no reservations and the second time we got in was because we made a reservation during our first visit. It was convenient for us and we were more familiar with the area where it was located so it was an easy choice. I wouldn't not recommend the place, but I don't know if that's saying much. read more

If I only had one day in Venice I would choose to eat at Osteria Enoteca ai Artisti and Taverna San Trovaso. My wife and I decided to go to Taverna on the last evening of our recent Venice trip and were really glad we saved this place for last. It's a very popular restaurant amongst locals so we got there early and waited in the rain for the doors to open. Totally worth it! As for the food. Five-star all the way. Loved the seafood spaghetti, Venetian cuttlefish with squid ink sauce and wild mushroom ravioli with truffle oil. This is classic Venetian food at its best. The prices were decent by Venice standards too as Taverna is nowhere near being the most expensive place we ate during our stay (those restaurants are generally in San Marco.) read more

We asked for more bread and they told us we couldn't have any until after the meals were served... um, ok...? The lady who brought us our last two plates of food was obviously very annoyed that we couldn't understand what she was saying (even huffed before repeating what the names of the dishes were). We walked in and surprisingly, the restaurant was pretty packed. It's secretly huge - with two floors. Even though there were a couple tables downstairs, the waiter took us to the much emptier, not as happy ambience second floor. There's a good mix of locals and tourists. Again, like most of the food places in Italy, service was meh. They didn't even give us plates til our food came so my bread was sitting like a loner on the tablecloth. The bread was like airplane meal bread and we asked for olive oil/balsamic vinegar that never came (booo). We ordered the spaghetti scoglio (seafood spaghetti), spaghetti sepplie (squid ink spaghetti), and the 4 stagioni pizza. Food came in within 15-20 min and there was even wifi so time went by even quicker. The spaghetti scoglio was the best dish there. The seafood was generous - lobster, squid, shrimp, clams, and mussels. The ref sauce was fresh and really rich with seafood taste, def better than any pasta I had in America. The sepplie was hmmm a one time experience...it wasn't bad. But it definitely was not the best thing ever. The spaghetti itself was well cooked but the black sauce was ocean-water tasting. The pasta however was covered in squid that was fresh but salty. Also, the black sauce stains...learned it the hard way. The pizza was mediocre - the worse I had in Italy yet. It was really oily and it didn't have that grilled charcoal crispy taste that most Italian pizzas have though. Anyways, it was still better than most pizzas I had in America. Wonderful find in Dorsoduro area of Venice. They opened promptly at 7PM and there was already a long line that formed around 6:55 when we arrived. Although it is a larger space than most Venice restaurants, it is recommended to make reservations as there were some that got turned away or were told to come back at a later time. We ordered the seafood mixed grill (chef picks plus two large cubes of polenta) for two - around 31 Euros and the Spaghetti alle seppie nere (cuttlefish with squid ink) - around 12 Euros and a side of their daily vegetable (asparagus)-- 4 Euros as well as various glasses of wine. This was more than enough for two ( we left stuffed and were not able to finish our dishes) But then again, we did have plenty of bread and the cracker sticks that were provided (that is part of the cover charge). Entire meal ran around slightly less than 70 Euro's -- which is a bargain compared to what we would have paid in the states. I thoroughly enjoyed both the mixed seafood grill and the spaghetti and definitely recommend. Saw a lot of patrons order pizza, however. They are English-friendly. read more

I've been here several times now and always find it to be a reliable place to dine. My first visit was back in 1998 with my husband. This most recent visit (October 2013) was with my husband and two friends. Reservations are a must (which I had my hotel call to make our reservations) and when we arrived at 7:30pm, the place was full and our table had a 'reservations' sign on it. For an appetizer, we shared a large plate of Prosciutto crudo abbinato allo Stracchino e Carasauallo (Parma ham with soft fresh cheese on side and Special Bread). The special bread was just one piece, not enough to really share but the proscuitto was excellent. I ordered one of the dinner specials, Mezzelune ai Porcini ed Olio Tartufato (ravioli with wild mushrooms and truffle oi)l. Oh my!!! Fabulous! Tony had the Ossobuco alla cacciatora (veal shank with mushrooms and polenta). Also excellent. I didn't jot down what our friends ate but they liked their meal. We shared two liters of wine (9 euros each) and later I had a large glass of vin santo, or something similar to that. Dinner for four for one appetizer, four entrees, wine, etc., came to 101 euros. We took the spaghetti Vongole here. It was the second best we have ever eaten. If I take into account the price, then it is even the best Vongole ever (only 11 EUR with 2 EUR coperto). The service was excellent and the prices are very competitive. Vongole, Tiramisu, a liter Prosecco and a liter wine costed only 45 EUR for 2. Best value for money in Venice. The wait for a table wasn't long (thanks to covid, jk), the restaurant ambience is tranquil and pleasant. The appetizers I ordered were not bad, I especially liked the scallops cos it was well cooked and the butter was perfectly paired with it. The octopus was great too but I was looking for more different taste than just boiled and placed in olive oil. The sardine dish isn't for me, I didn't really like it but I tried it since it was a traditional venetian dish. Finally, I took the spaghetti with clams and was disappointed at how oily it was. The clams were cooked nicely but the pasta was drowning in olive oil which left the dish tasting just like olives. I tried this dish elsewhere and TBH, I won't recommend eating this here. Aside from that, of course, I took the Aperol Campari which is slightly more bitter than the Aperol Spritz both were refereshing but I prefer the Spritz. About the bill, I found it so weird that they charge for "coperto" translated to cutlery in english, shouldn't the washing etc be already included in the price of a meal? Anyway, it's 3€ per person I think which is a euro less than what another restaurant charged me. read more

We enjoyed this restaurant so much that we returned for a second of the three dinners we had in Venice. The seafood here is not fancy, but what I imagine is eaten at Sunday dinners. Bountiful, fresh and toothsome. It is not a "pretty", restaurant, nor is there a view, except for the canal next to it if you're seated by the window. If you're a seafood lover, you will be spending all your time gazing at your plate. I also recommend the quintessential Venetian dish of cuttlefish and polenta. First day in Venice and we found this Gem! This place have the best pasta we've EVER tasted! We had the Spaghetti Vongole is made with a saucey garlic butter sauce that taste like heaven, that is covered/mixed with I believe, a whole pound baby clams! The baby claims itself made up the for price of the dish which is only 11 EUR. We also ordered the Mixed Seafood plate w/Polenta which was perfectly cooked. I hate places that overcook seafood. This place makes everything so perfectly! My husband loves the Red House wine they have on tap. He said it's the best Red he has had in a long time.
