Service is great! Very friendly staff and can speak English. They have half bottles of selected wine. Note that in Italy, everything gets charged from the napkins to cover charge. We had some eggplant and shrimp which were on the house. My partner was allergic to shrimp but they brought out just the eggplant for him which was very kind of them. They recommended their special of sea bass for two which they will show you fully cooked before removing the bones and serving it to you on your plate. This place was convenient and right by where we were staying up so was recommended by our host at Airbnb. As other places were reserved we opted to go in with less expectations, and was delightfully surprised. Very attentive staff, got us a god glass of red wine that we wanted to split. Last night in Venice for us concluded with an awesome dinner here! So glad Osteria Al Portego was fully booked, didn't like the cramp, stuffy quarters there anyway. Loved how spacious and intimate MP is, the space between tables, the slightly dim lights, the heat level (it was a cold night) all perfect in setting the stage for a romantic and fun dinner. The service was exceptional too. Our server detailed the wine we selected as he opened and poured our bottle for us. He even offered to bring out a bucket of ice to chill the wine since I mentioned I liked it more on the cooler side. After our yummy meal, they topped it with complimentary glasses of sparkling sweet wine. Nice touch! Everything we ate was delicious! The ravioli was buttery, the squid ink pasta was tasty, flavorful and fun (plenty of photo ops, e.g., black teeth and tongue) and the sauce with the chicken was scrumptious. Marco Polo came highly recommended both by some friends and by Yelp reviews. I found the food quality very impressive - it was delicious, nicely presented and well cooked. The service was great too. We were seated at a table on the street, which allowed us to people-watch and be amused by the antics of the passers-by. We were having a splendid time until the bill came... While the food was reasonably priced, apparently the house wine (a mediocre tasting monepulciano) cost TWENTY EUROS for a single glass!! Given that a decent bottle of wine in Italy came be had for around eight Euros, I call this a blatant rip-off targeted at tourists. Our very pleasant meal was spoiled by this billing chicanery; I won't be returning, and suggest that anyone who does eat here examine the prices carefully. read more

So it was our first night in Venice and we had two choices. A) Spend a lot of euros per person for a pre-fix tour dinner or B) venture out on our own. We opted for the later and found ourselves a little gem of a restaurant in Venice. The restaurant is darling - dark wood beams, tile floors, candles - there's an intimate feeling even though the doors and large windows are wide open. There are plenty of tables inside for couples or large parties - but our group opted to dine al fresco or 'all'aperto', the best way to dine in Venice. Out waiter was charming and offered up suggestions of wines and pizza toppings and everything that came out of the kitchen was fantastico . Hubs and I selected a salad to start; fresh arugula topped with thin slices of incredible speck and parmesan cheese. A simple salad but absolutely scrumptious. Next up was a thin crusted small pizza with spicy pepperoni. A small pizza (six decent slices) was just enough for two people. The crust was light and crispy, the sauce was sweet, the mozzarella was fresh - all and all a perfect pizza pie. After we split the bill the meal ended up costing us less than half what the tour dinner would have cost: about 30€ for two courses, wine and a nice tip for our waiter. So glad we ventured out on our own... we immersed ourselves in the Venetian culture, had an excellent dinner and ended up saving some money. read more

We chose this restaurant as part of our Gondola ride tour with Viator (tour package). Wow!! Can I just say that this was the most romantic gondola ride and dinner we had while in Venice. Our expectations were far exceeded. Once the ride/tour was finished we were dropped off from the gondola close by. With the package, there were two restaurants to choose from. We chose to go to Marco Polo and sure glad we did. As we approached they had an available table outside that was candlelit and so breathtakingly beautiful and romantic. Our server was delightful. We decided to buy a nice bottle of wine since our meal was included in the tour. Everything from start to finish was outstanding. We met another American couple in another restaurant, and they told us about this restaurant. So, we decided to try it out since we were in the neighborhood. They were right - the pizzas were perfect - very thin crust. Rinato warmly greeted us. We came at the right time - the restaurant was quiet, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We had a four-cheese pizza with ham and one with ham, artichokes, and mushrooms. With two glasses of wine, two pizzas, water, cover and service, our total bill was €43. Venice virgins that we were we relied on our walking tour guide for a recommendation on our 1st full day and he mentioned this for a good place for lunch. He said don't let the name fool you it's not touristy. He was right. Our server, Iryna I think, was great and was patient with our language barrier issues. She was very attentive to our needs the whole time we were there We ordered a cheese plate and prosciutto platter to split in our party of seven as apps. Delicioso!!! I had tagliatelle w shrimp tomatoes and mushrooms. Excellent! Wife had another parpadelle w scallops. Another couple split a whole oven roasted fish w potatoes and artichokes I think. Can't remember the rest but everyone loved their food. As we were forewarned, it's tough to find bad food anywhere in Italy and Marco Polo was indeed fantastic. House red wine was good, prices were reasonable it seems for the area and it was a nice quaint little spot. I really wanted to be able to say something nice about this restaurant because they started off kind and polite. AT FIRST: We came in around 6pm with our infant daughter. She is just starting to sit in a high chair and so we asked if they had something she could sit in. They brought out a seat that was sunken in and so she wasn't able to sit up. It was more like she was folded in the back of the chair. Not to mention the steps didn't go around her waist, they only went over her legs. Unfortunately she was very uncomfortable and become upset so we had to leave and find a place with a real high chair. SO WE LEFT: As we walked not 10 feet down the street the server who had seated us walked past us and said "NICE" and was shaking his head. Now maybe he doesn't have children but if he had been at all understanding he would've realized how unenjoyable the experience would've been if our baby was screaming and crying the entire time. I was appalled that he was so rude when all we had done was sat down (not even ordered drinks yet) and had to leave. VERY RUDE. We live in Italy and go to Venice often and now will NEVER eat there. Our last dinner in Venice and we decided to randomly select a restaurant since we always seemed to get lost- which is common here. Our waiter who was a handsome young Italian guy on Oct 8 was very polite and friendly that we decided to try this place. Not pushy like most of them here. After eating pizza and pasta twice in a day- I decided to try the calamari and my hubby tried the lasagna which is a small serving but enough for him. We shared a yummy salad and enjoyed their bread. We opted not too have dessert since we wanted to walk around first for last minute souvenir shopping. To our surprise our young waiter gave us a complimentary limoncello shot and chocolate candy- we were really touched! Simple gestures of kindness go a long way. The environment of Marco Polo embodies everything I imagined when dreaming of my trip to Venice: a small, single room restaurant with dim lighting and delicious food and wine. The service was pleasant and the prices were not extravagant. When the bread came out, we asked for some olive oil to accompany. The bread was nice and the balsamic vinaigrette they brought out "Emilio" (pictured below) was delicious. We ordered the tasting menu in addition to a couple dishes and a bottle of wine. The food: Squid ink pasta: I actually was slightly disappointed with this dish. The pasta itself wasn't to die for and the sauce was average Salami and bruschetta: came with 3 meats (the salami and prosciutto were both excellent), kalamata olives, and "bruschetta" (which was really just bread with marinara sauce on the side) Bolognese lasagna: highlight of the night. Cheesy but not too oily or gooey. The sauce was rich and flavorful. I want to come back just to get a full portion of that lasagna Fish w veggies: the fish wasn't overly flavorful, but had a nice buttery taste. The artichoke hearts that accompanied were hard and bitter, but the potatoes were decent Tiramisu: quite good. How do I put this without sounding like an extremist? The service was really, ready bad. But as is usually the case, something like this falls to one or two people and not necessarily the restaurant itself. It appeared that others were getting served fairly timely but we had a 3 course meal and waited about 30 minutes for each course. Our waiter only came by to drop off each course. We asked for drink refills and they never came. My steak, ordered medium, was rare, but the waiter never returned to check on the meal. Once we were done with the meal we waited a long time and no waiter. I asked the bus boy for the check. Ten minutes later asked a second time. after another 10 minutes stopped the manager. Then asked the manager again for the check. I would not return. Even though it may be an isolated incident, in this case it seemed indicative of the management philosophy. read more

I sat down and ordered a bottle of Cabrrnet Sauvignon, one of their cheapest wine from their varied list for €18. It was a nice match to the lasagna alla bolognese. I had the chicken with lemon sauce for the second course. I should have probably ordered the fish instead since we are by the sea; next time. Good bread to start with and good tiramisu to finish my meal. Not disappointing at all. The restaurant is a little bigget than ot appears from the front. We went here for dinner at 10:40 after a few drinks just to have a quick bite. As soon as we sat down we were reminded that they close at 11 and we can't order anything other than pizza. We sit down and order pizza and then we are told there is additional 2 euro cover charge. We say that's fine and the waitress makes a face at us and strutts away. Then out pizza comes, it's pretty good. The other male waiter comes by and asks us if we need water and is very kind and brings us some. He then brings us chilli flakes etc. then the lady comes again and I ask for cappuccino and she makes that face again and unforgivingly bringse coffee. She was quite nice to all other local guests. So if you are. TourIst and want to be treated nice I d stay away. Food was good but not worth the insult. read more

Wow, we really loved this meal. We were looking for another restaurant on Yelp that had 4.5 stars but couldnt find it. We stumbled upon this restaurant and I'm so glad we did. Excellant food and service! Lasangna was one of my wifes favorites on the trip. I had the Fussili pasta with shrimp added and it was incredible! Got a side vegetable plate as well which was perfect combo to meal with a great assortment of veggies. Only negative was they had a very extensive wine menu but I found the prices pretty high in comparison to other restaurants on the trip.
