This cozy spot is definitely worth making a reservation! I called the morning we arrived, after seeing the reviews on Yelp, and they were able to fit us in for lunch the next day. There are only a handful of tables, and we watched them turn a number of people away, being full. They showed each table personal attention and were really kind. Our waitress graciously helped translate the options for the meat course for us. We had the pumpkin flan (wow- so velvety and special!), pork medallions, and veal medallions, finished off with a panna cotta with a raisin sauce. Amazing 5 star meal!!! This is the best restaurant in Venice with the nicest staff . Need to make reservations as they are constantly booked on the day of. Our reservations was 9:30 but I mixed up the time and came 7:30. The waitress was nice enough to work us in just had to wait for about 20 min. All I can say is that I should have stuffed myself silly and went all out cuz the food here is so amazing. I called to make a reservation but they were all booked for the night and for the next day, the only spot available was past 9PM for a shared table. I took the chance and it's well worth it! The menu may change on a daily basis too but they have a separate leaf of a paper that gives you a general translation of things so it will say something like coniglio is rabbit. You'll need to figure out how things are prepared, but luckily, it's by the canal with a window so you can get some cell reception for translations. We got a few sections: sarde in saor, artichoke hearts and the lamb. This place happens to have the most side vegetable dishes that I've seen in Italy! I wasn't really eating my veggies before and they have things like turnip, pumpkin, eggplants, etc. We skipped the dessert as I had been munching on biscuits and warming myself with mulled wine and hot chocolate and latte macchiato. While in Venice in the summer our hotel concierge recommended a dinner reservation at La Zucca (The Pumpkin). It was a short walk from our hotel on a beautiful evening. La Zucca is a small, rustic restaurant with traditional Italian food. The menu is in Italian entirely, but our server spoke a little English so we were able to navigate the menu just fine. We ordered a vegetarian platter with several delicious items, a meat lasagna, vegetarian lasagna and steak. Everything was very tasty! Majorly disappointed in the pumpkin flan. First attempt we were denied on a Tuesday night because we didn't have a reservation. So we made one for the following night (which btw was BS because it still took them 20 mins to seat us when we had a reservation). We got the lamb ragu and the pumpkin flan with house white wine. The lamb ragu was amazing, but their most famous dish the pumpkin flan was lackluster. It was too sweet for a main dish and I know it's flan, but it was too undercooked / raw in the center - was more like a cake mix before it gets baked. The waiters were whatever. One of my worst restaurants experiences ever. Our server was rude. Not openly, no! But he was very annoyed when I asked him about some items in the menu (they only have it in Italian bc they say they change it every day, which is totally cool! But unfortunately I don't speak the language so I expect some polite guidance), then I asked if they have fish, he said no, I asked if they had any seafood at all, he said no, at that point I already felt pretty unwelcome and rushed, so I ordered the only kind of chicken they had on the menu. It was chicken curry, guess I should have noticed the red flag. My husband ordered wine and the server brought only one glass for him and never asked me if I wanted anything. He never came to check on us, so when I wanted to order wine for myself, we had to wait for him to pass by without even looking our way, and call him to the table. Any time he would bring something, we would say "grazie", he never said anything in return. I don't know the server's name, but he's kinda short,got grey hair and a beard and long sideburns. Just try to avoid him if you decide to go there. We're the kind of tourists that walk into any place with a smile and try to be nice to everyone, cause we realize we are guests in their hometown and it's only polite to be nice to your hosts. That time I walked in with a smile and left with a frown. I honestly wanted to go to another restaurant to flush out the experience. Speaking of food. My chicken was terrible: dry and lacking flavor. My husband got pasta with ricotta and it was pretty blah, nothing to write home about. We had beef carpaccio and smoked burratina for appetizer, both were great, especially the carpaccio. So I guess they specialize in smaller dishes. All in all, I have no idea what they got that Michelin star for!! If the food wasn't perfect but the service was friendly, I would have been totally fine. But that server ruined my mood and that's something you don't expect to deal with at a nice establishment. read more

Of all of the places I went on a 6 week trip in Europe, this was by far my favorite. Saw the need for a reservation (which is totally true) but was miraculously able to sneak into an open table outside after some other tourists finished their early dinner. The staff was excellent; best service we had in Europe. The couple next to us was surprised that the waiter spoke decent French as well. They took the time to translate the entire menu into English, but be forewarned, they wanted you to decide quickly afterwards. This proved to be difficult for my wife and I, as everything sounded amazing. We ended up ordering the pumpkin flan, buratta, mushrooms, and the lamb chops. The plates are smaller sizes meant for mixing and sharing. The pumpkin flan is as interesting as everyone says it is (I mean, this place is called "the pumpkin" for something right?). The house red wine was good as well. The total was 4 plates, desserts and drinks for around 70 euros, which we thought, for the experience, was an amazing value. Will remember (and dream) about this dinner for years to come and can't wait to go back and experience it again (with a reservation this time). read more

Went here for Valentines Day and loved it. We made reservations in advance and had to "share" a table with another couple but it was totally okay. The menu is all in Italian with no translations, so it might be a problem if you don't know the language. We had the Pumpkin Flan based on the reviews and it was delicious! Hubby had lamb and I had chicken, which was also very good. The dessert was another hit, forgot the name, but it was something with mango in it. Delicious! All in all, with wine and a liter of water, it was about 70Euros, but definitely worth it. Why, hello, Venice! I just arrived in Venice this morning and am very glad that we had our first dinner at La Zucca. First, the food was solid amazing. The ingredients were so fresh that I could taste every bit of it; for example, the two appetizers we ordered were made of avocado and asparagus, respectively, and I could taste every fiber of them. Then, for main, we ordered two different pastas -- tomato-based one with ricotta cheese and an olive oil-based one with bell peppers. The latter was so simple but so exquisitely done that even for someone like me who usually prefers tomato-based pasta, I wanted the plate all for myself! Second, the area around the restaurant and the restaurant itself were beautiful. The moment I walked into the small corner at which La Zucca is located, I completely fell in love. The restaurant is small and therefore, so cozy and intimate. Highly recommend the place for a date. Two warnings, though: 1) Make reservations early (once again, the restaurant is quite small) and 2) The menu is all in Italian, so beware! read more

I don't think this was the best restaurant we found in Venice or Italy, but it was very good. The flan I would give a 4/5; the vegetarian lasagna as well. I found both to be way too strong and unbalanced in flavor; they were tedious to eat. I had to eat extra bread to balance the flavor, and I had to constantly drink water like I was eating peanut butter. However, I would give the vegetarian platter a resounding 5/5. It was amazing! We had the vegetarian lasagna and it was by far the best lasagna we had in Italy -- the béchamel was so oozy and yummy. We also shared the asparagus/speck pasta and thought it was okay compared to the lasagna (we determined that asparagus is apparently over cooked everywhere in Italy). The lemon cello mousse was pretty good-- almost a foam-like texture. We came on a Friday at lunch time and didn't have any problems getting in without a reservation. Exquisite place and our number one favorite restaurant while in Venice. Everything is pumpkin themed from the decor to the menu and they have a fresh menu every day. They're known for their vegetarian offerings so you can expect lots of fancy veggies. The flan di zucca (pumpkin soufflé) was incredible, no wonder it's their most popular dish. Tagliatelle with mushrooms were alright. The entree that stole the show was the veal...WOW. Everything was perfect from the taste to the texture to the presentation! In a place like Venice, where traditional food usually includes meat, it is difficult for a vegetarian to find good food - you don't always want to stick to spaghetti al pomodoro or pizza margaritha. La Zucca is a real gem, as it offers a variety of vegetarian as well as meat based meals. The vegetarian lasagna my friend had was exceptional, and my moussaka (includes meat) was better than most of those I had in the Cyclades. The only difficulty we had, was that the menu had no translations, it was only in Italian. The servers were really nice though, and explained everything to us. Another tip: do book in advance.
