    Wood Fired Onion Dip
    MJ R.

Ladder 13 is located inside the Latern Hotel on Senate Street. The entrance is confusing if they have the garage door opening but it's in the right hand corner facing the building. We had a reservation for 7 pm and we were greeted by someone who was absolutely not capable of handing feon of the house hostess duties. There were tables available but they would not seat us because they had one table for three and the people were not finished yet. Meanwhile there was an available table for 4 staring us in the face. They asked us to sit in the lobby of the hotel...with a bunch of other people waiting for tables and we didn't get seated until almost 7:30 pm. I felt like that Seinfeld episode where he says: ."you can take the reservation, you just can't keep the reservation". Our server was great but the food was just mediocre. We started with the Wood Roasted Onion dip which was OK. It did not have a real onion taste but went well with the chips. Our other appetizer, the Fluffy Cheese, was whipped feta i think or ricotta drizzled with honey ( their menu doesn't tell you which cheese it is...go figure). The cheese was really good..creamy and flavorful and I would definitely order this again. It was served with "foccacia" bread that is tasty and you really get the rosemary flavor but it's not true foccicia..its more like a soft brioche. We had the shrimp and the chicken as main horses which come with ....wait for this...nothing! They are simply grilled skewers of a few shrimp and chunks of chicken. These were good but I could make this at home. We split a salad that was quite tasty. The pasta was overdone and starchy...and lacked any creativity. The drinks were good but $14 for a small glass of what is an $15 a bottle from a wine shop Rosé is out of touch. Sadly, out experience from start to finish was a big disappointment. When you arrive 10 minutes early for a reservation and you get seated 40 minutes later when clearly tables are avaialble is gross mismanagement. I doubt I would return unless it was for a special event and that was the location. Its fairly new and maybe se kinks still need to be worked out but the confusion with seating? Coupled with the disappointing food...we won't be returning anytime soon.

Cute place! The food was delightfully, we got the fluffy cheese as our appetizer and it was our favorite part of the whole meal. I got the orecchiette with the beef shank ragu. 10/10. My partner got the lumache verde, which was also delicious. Service was a little slow towards the end, but overall a great experience. We will be back to try the cocktails!

This is such a great new addition to Columbia. We ate here last week, and the food was so good. I had the fluffy cheese which is delicious. I also got the chicken which was also delicious. Inside is very cool. They've done a great job remodeling the place. The bar stays open longer than the restaurant. Great Drinks! I highly recommend, and we will be back!

What a great addition to Columbia! Unlike anything else we currently have. Great atmosphere as well. Food was exceptional - wish I had more room so I could have tried everything on the menu! We will definitely be returning! Great service.

Over priced for what you get. The pizza is gas station quality which is about the same as dominos.

The place is very well air conditioned, and the space is very intentional. Visiting from out of state the waitress seemed a bit shy/new but curious about Wisconsin she warmed up a little bit. It's really cool that you can see the chefs in their element behind a glass wall while you wait. The silverware, or should I say Goldwear was beautiful. I started out with the All American Spritz- it was good but nothing extraordinary. However when I tried the pistachio martini, I was in disbelief! I was skeptical to order it as I've never even heard of one before and was unsure how pistachio would translate into a martini. It was creamy and somehow savory and sweet at the same time, the alcohol taste was nonexistent. And the rim was coated in pistachio crumbs. Both the drinks presentation was beautiful. I personally ordered the bbq chicken sandwhich, with mac and cheese instead of fries for the side. The sandwich was smoky, I could not stop eating it! If anyone was wondering what so special about the mac and cheese, it's the name of the noodles. And yes, the waitress will sound it out with you lol! The Mac and cheese wasn't creamy, and I found it a bit bland unfortunately. There was no order the same in the group I came with. The truffle fries were on the thinner crispier side, neat that there were different color of potatoes used. The duck wings came out like their very own presentation. I tried the alligator bites, that were served with 2 sauces, I thought there were kind of chewy , and weird enough I guess I have a preference with how my alligator is served since having tried some at the Wisco State fair. I love that the menu feels curated, you know what you're there for and it's not overwhelming to pick from the options of something new. The bathroom was very cute too! And the bar area was lit up, a cool atmosphere.

That created a slightly rushed feeling right from the start of the experience. When the food arrived, it was not served hot. The fries were seasoned but came out cold, so we had to send them back. The service also felt a bit disengaged, as though the server was ready to wrap things up, even though there was still about 30 to 45 minutes before closing time. That said, once the food was remade and served hot, it was really good. My salad, however, was not the same experience, as the lettuce had brown spots throughout, which took away from the overall quality. You can tell the kitchen has potential when the food is prepared properly, but consistency is the issue. The ambience is very cool and visually appealing. It is a bit dark for my personal preference in the evening, but I can imagine it being bright and beautiful during the daytime. The cocktail I ordered was just okay and didn't really stand out. Overall, there is definitely potential here, but improvements in consistency, service attentiveness, and food quality control would really elevate the experience.

A bar that doesn't have ANYTHING on draft is kind of weird. Second, I asked if their kitchen was open, and after being told it was, asked for the chicken tender basket. Only after running my card, did they tell me that they were out of fries, and I would either have to get just the tenders or sweet potato fries instead. I don't like sweet potato fries, so I paid $10 for a chicken tender "basket", which included only tenders. In my opinion, it would have been appropriate to either offer me a refund, or at least offer me a shot or more tenders for the trouble. Finally, the bar itself was pretty nasty, with broken seats, TVs that had black spots on them, and a disorganized looking vibe overall. The staff and patrons were pretty nasty as well. In all, this was one of the worst bars I've been to in a long time, I will not be coming back, and I would not recommend that anyone patronize this bar if they're looking for a high-quality experience.

Service was good and very friendly, portion sizes were extremely generous, and well priced. That said, the food wasn't great. Very greasy all around. I was the only one who didn't thin the sausage was gross. My frittata had a ton of mozzarella cheese which added no flavor but a ton of calories, one bite of the grit cake and it had very little taste but a lot of fat in it. I had brunch here once before a few years ago and I remember there being some healthier options on the menu and I don't remember it being this greasy. J.Ja

However, we expected German beer options being that they call themselves a Biergarten. They had none. Absolutely nothing about this place was German. We went on a Sunday late morning and all they had was brunch. That was fine, but the brunch menu was fairly limited. And again, nothing German. While our service was great, it looked like they had two servers for the entire place. We saw two tables of people get up and leave because the weren't being waited on. Again, our experience was good. But maybe consider the negatives before trying.
