Really cute place with friendly staff. Patio is dog-friendly. We just ordered a basic breakfast and the hashbrowns are a crispy potato cake that was really delicious. I also ordered a side of cheesy grits which were not like the smooth hominy grits I'm used to - these were chewy and tough. I liked the casual atmosphere here - never felt rushed and the prices seemed reasonable for a hip, downtown joint. I'd definitely return! read more

The pies... The chicken-frieds... Gravy, chili, cheese... All the time your cardiologist would tell you to avoid... Everything is made fresh and of top quality. My personal favorite is the chicken-fried steak with jalapeño gravy. The pies are amazing, no matter which flavor you try, although I haven't found many pies anywhere I've enjoyed as much as their London Fog (lavender Earl Grey cream pie)... I hear the donuts are good, but donuts come in last place when I'm presented with their other menu items. Don't forget to try one of their craft cocktails too! The atmosphere is mid-century dinner/ soda shop (but with booze!), so you can eat your delicious high quality meal in a fun, unpretentious atmosphere. The service is always friendly. You'll probably have to wait for a table on a weekend morning, especially during the fall and spring semesters, just like any good spot along Mass Street, but it's definitely worth the wait! read more

My french toast was not very special. The macaroni and cheese was delightfully spicy. The banana pie was delicious. The music was a bit loud and they seated us near the grill that was quite loud as well. The service was adequate although we waited twenty minutes for our order and a bigger party next to us who ordered their food after us got their food in ten minutes. read more

This was a particular quick trip, however, I had the opportunity to experience the Ladybird Diner in the heart of downtown area. Though stopping for breakfast I was able to order the famous chicken pot pie . They serve the whole menu all day. The pot pie was very visually appealing with a very hearty stew base. It is not heavy with bread, however, had just enough to make it still a pot pie. This is probably large enough for two as I could not finish it even though I tried. One very unique thing about this place was their donut selection. They had for $0.75 a donut of multiple fashions. I bought a dozen for my clients before I left and it was a huge hit! I've now been to Ladybird twice. Lawrence is becoming a competitive town for breakfast/brunch. That being said, I haven't been impressed. They offer liquored drinks but not any variation of coffee, which I would like, as I prefer espresso drinks. My first experience was terrible as they forgot to ring our order in, and the waitress didn't notice until we were waiting there for 45 minutes and people who arrived after us were already leaving. So, after that bad experience, we tried again today and received our food in a normal wait time. I wasn't too exited about the menu; it's not very diverse. I got the meal with potatoes, eggs, and pancakes the first time and pancakes only the second time. All just ok. Didn't think there was much flavor to the food. Overall, the atmosphere is cool, but there are other places in Lawrence I would go to or recommend before saying Ladybird. read more

I had the pleasure of dining at Ladybird with my daughter and grand kids over the weekend. What a gem of a place. The entire experience was wonderful. It's tricky to go out to eat with little ones but Ladybird makes it so easy. The food is delicious and the wait staff is so attentive. Micha was our server and she made the whole experience even better. Such a kind person! She must have picked up baby toys at least 23 times while walking by our table and did so graciously and with a sweet smile. I will definitely be back every trip to Lawrence. Thank you! read more

Let me say that I'm a frequent flyer at this spot. I wouldn't have ever thought to go here but I've met some friends & this is our hangout. The décor is everything! It's so adorable in there. I love the freedom vibe that it gives. It's really an accepting joint. The servers are all kind and good people. They always have a smile. They are really accommodating. The environment is really quirky but I love it. It's always a big crowd in there. It's kid friendly but if you have a group of adults, that's fine too. The food is really good. My first time there, I ordered biscuits and gravy. Everyone told me to get a half order & at first I was like what, I can put down when it comes to biscuits and gravy. I'm glad that I listened though because it was a really generous portion. I have also had the chicken fried steak. My friend really talked this place up, so glad we had a chance to try it. Loved it, especially the kitchsy, cool decor. It's neat to see how Lawrence has evolved since I've been at KU. I got two donuts to go for some friends, but ate the biscuits and gravy. The biscuits were were so delicious and the gravy well seasoned. I also ordered a side of bacon and it was perfectly crispy. A breakfast here is a great way to start the day. We didn't have to wait at all on a weekend morning and the service was fantastic. This used to be one of my favorite breakfast/brunch spots and I would always bring my family here when they were visiting from out of state. Now I don't even think about coming here. I had an experience where I ordered biscuits and gravy and the biscuits tasted like they were two days old and honestly just wasn't good at all (used to be my favorite to order here). I had been here years ago when they first opened and were giving out pie samples on the street. Those samples were so delicious I made a point to get breakfast here on my drive from South Carolina to Colorado. Totally worth it. The Papas Bravas were delicious! I loved the pico and sauce on top, the potatoes weren't drenched in it so you had the nice blend of sauce, pico and perfectly fried potatoes. I snagged a few bites of pancakes and got a piece of blackberry crumble and sour-cream custard pie to go. They were very busy when we went but we didn't wait long to be seated and service was fantastic! If I'm ever driving through Kansas again, I'll be sure to stop by. read more

Atmosphere: this diner has a retro vibe going with its decor. It's fun and quirky. Service: the service was excellent and we had no wait when we got there at 8am on a Saturday. Drinks: we stuck with water this early in the morning but they did have a bar and a good drink menu. Food: I had the Diner plate with ham and I substituted the hash browns with fresh fruit. The eggs and ham were cooked well and good. The toast could have been a little bigger but it was good. The fresh fruit was nice. My husband had the juevos rancheros. I have a friend that lives in Lawrence and raves about this place. We happened to be in Lawrence and were hungry, so we decided to try this place in February. I wish we lived closer! The vibe inside is eclectic with a refrigerated pie cabinet near the front. I had a boozy coffee with my avocado toast. This avocado toast was amazing with the pickled red onions. We had Father's Day lunch at the diner. It was delicious! Their variety is fun, the portions are huge, and the service is friendly. Some of us had breakfast and some had lunch dishes. The atmosphere is great and the people are really hospitable and nice. I am not crazy about the food. I have been there a few times and have never gotten anything that I really liked. My eggs have been overcooked :( and the menu isn't very varied so there aren't a lot of options. Its a perfectly okay breakfast spot and diner if you want to try something you don't find often but other placed do the classics better. I haven't tried their donuts or pies but I have heard they are amazing. The restaurant is worth a try if you've never been, its just not my cup of tea. read more

Everything about this place is top-notch. It has a great laid-back atmosphere that makes you feel welcome and at home. All of the servers are extremely friendly and make sure that you're getting a great experience. It's really busy here, so make sure you're prepared to wait for a table. The wait is so worth it. I came here with a friend and we sat at the bar because the tables and booths were packed. We both ordered the orange juice, which was delightful. We decided to split an order of biscuits and gravy and chocolate chip pancakes. The food was fresh, hot and scrumptious. The biscuits and gravy are some of the best I've ever had; the sausage gravy is thick, creamy and has a bit of a kick to it, which I enjoyed a lot. The biscuits were warm and well baked. Every time I come back to Lawrence I feel there are so many new restaurants popping up. My Dad talked me out of my normal breakfast haunts in favor of trying Ladybird Diner where he had ordered a pie for Thanksgiving. They got us set up right away and provided a high chair for my baby. Our waitress was friendly and helpful, engaging my daughter to keep her busy. I ordered the chocolate chip pancake short stack which in reality was two gigantic plate sized pancakes. I ordered a side of hash browns not knowing about the portion sizes and I had way more than I could handle. But the food was delicious! I would call it elevated diner grub. We got the Mac and cheese kids meal for my daughter which they served in a little bowl. She liked it but it was served so hot I had to give her my food and end up taking it home for an afternoon snack so it could cool down. I've been to LadyBird for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It has a cool vibe and decor that I'd describe as a cross between Americana/Rockabilly. I know many know the virtues of their amazing breakfast and lunch, but you have to stop in for dinner and order whatever the Chef's Special is. One night, I had this amazing pork tenderloin with a plum sauce that I still think about. "Ladybird", by the way, is the British term for what we know as a "ladybug", the cute little red dome shaped things, and member of the beetle family, with black dots that will crawl up your finger and onto your hand, tagging along until they get bored and fly away to find another unsuspecting human being or facsimile thereof. Anyway, Ladybird Diner is a busy place and got great reviews from respected colleagues, but was underwhelming in my eyes. I somehow expected more and have yet to find a great breakfast place (or lunch and dinner for that matter) in LFK. Big sigh. We stopped by about a month ago on a Sunday around 1pm and they were packed with a 15-20 minute wait, so we went up the street and ate. My spouse had a medical procedure and had not eaten for 33 hours, and I fasted along with her for moral support. So by the time we arrived at 9:30 this morning, we were FAMISHED, STARVING, HUNGRY AS A HORSE if you catch my drift. My wife loves their pancakes and hashbrowns, but went for a couple of doughnuts (and one to take home for tomorrow - $2.09/ea) and a side of hashbrowns ($2.49). She was happy as a lark, indulging her sweet tooth and getting a massive sugar and carb rush all for just $6.67. Such a deal! I, on the other hand, went the more traditional route. I rarely eat a big breakfast, opting instead for a cup or two of joe and some wheat bread with natural peanut butter and sliced bananas. However, 4-6 times a year a get a hankerin' for a full-on breakfast with eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, and biscuits and gravy (B&G), so that was what I did. I ordered the Diner Breakfast ($9.99) and a half order of B&G ($5.49). The Diner was decent, nothing special, coming with wheat toast, and the eggs were cooked over-medium as I had asked. The three slices of bacon were lukewarm and petrified, obviously pre-cooked and sitting in a warming tray or nuked because they were difficult to cut with a knife and very chewy if you know what I mean. The hashbrowns were somewhat sparse, but crispy and savory just the way I like them. The biscuits and gravy were another story altogether. A buttermilk biscuit and a ladle of country gravy cost no more than a $1 max to produce, so I have difficulty understanding a 549% markup. Ladybird is not the only culprit, all the breakfast places on Mass Street do it as do many others around the nation. $2.99, even $3.49, would be a fair price for a single biscuit and gravy for a $2 to $2.50 profit on less than a buck's worth of flour and fat. Enough about price. The order of B&G looked appetizing enough, but there was an odd taste to the gravy I could not quite put my finger on. Did they add honey mustard to the gravy? It sure tasted like it, so I asked to cook as I came back from the loo and was told that it was not honey mustard, but nutmeg. I was wrong, but the taste of the gravy was even wronger (look that up in your Funk and Wagnalls). Why can't I get some good ol' fashioned overpriced biscuits and gravy on Mass Street? This place adds nutmeg, another tops it with watery green chili sauce ... give me a damn biscuit and some freakin' normal salty and peppery country gravy for cryin' out loud! Sorry, the country gravy has me talkin' like a country boy, so let me digress y'all. The service was "OK", not bad, but not very good. Maybe they were shorthanded because I only saw two servers running around to the 15 or so tables, but I sat and waited for a coffee refill for a good 10 minutes while our server ran back and forth avoiding eye contact the entire time. I know servers somehow expect that they deserve a 20% tip nowadays (there I go again, dammit!) no matter how well they perform, but I put myself through college waiting tables and am a bit picky when it comes to service. This young lady got a 15% tip, generous in my eyes, but I am sure she cursed me as we walked out the door. Sidenote: I rarely give less than 15% because I know these folks work mostly for tips to pay their bills and routinely give 20%+ for very good, friendly service. This service was neither, but not bad enough to warrant 10% or less as sometimes has to be the case. If I do tip less than 15%, I normally inform them of their shortfalls or leave a note if they are very busy in order to, hopefully make it a learning experience. In this case, I left my card and she can read the review (or not). If she does read this review, I hope she smiles more in the future, makes eye contact and ensures coffee mugs are full, and maybe makes a little idle chit chat so customers feel like we are appreciated, human, sentient beings.
