Review 51 (2026)…read more Stayed from 8/18-8/23/2026. We booked/reserved last March, Golf course view with Lanai. This was the third time staying at Kahala hotel. We stayed in 2024 60th anniversary/birthday, (Kahala hotel was built in 1964), and in 2025. When checked in, Front desk Ms. Lingling Yu assisted us, she offered upgraded with free charge, to Dolphins room. Our room was located in Dolphins Lagoon, when we opened the lanai door, we could see the huge lagoon, Dolphins were swimming right in front, also we could see ocean. Fantastic!!! Everyday we enjoyed breakfast at Plumeria Beach House, looking at the ocean and garden. Our choices were, Thin pancakes, Vegetable omelette, Açai bowl, and Classic Egg Benedicts, everyday different menu. Servers were so nice, some staffs remembered us. The last day checked out day, server brought birthday cake for me. On 8/21, we ordered "Grand Kahala Breakfast ($100)" Room in service at 10am. Room service came at around 10am, server brought big table into our room, set up for us. Food and coffee were just made, cold menu as fresh and cold, hot menu as fresh and hot. We spent the most of the time in the hotel, just lying down at pool area, reading the books, taking a walk along the beach. For shopping or a little trip, hotel provided free shuttle buses to Kahala Mall, Waikīkī and Ala Moana. We loved "Kahala burger "at Seaside Grills. For dinner, we went to Arancino at the Kahala 2 times, Alan Wong inside property, a few times we went outside the property. Everyday Ms. Lingling Yu texted me, " How are you doing? If you need anything please let me know". How sincere and thoughtful. Daily housekeeper cleaned up our room, always gave us amenities. When we needed something we called, housekeeper came and brought right away. Over all, I will give 10+++ stars. The Banyan Wing is the original Victorian-era building which is listed on National Historic Registry and houses the main lobby and restaurant. The number of guests and visitor who circulate through this property daily is incredible. Including the Tower and Surfrider Wings, it has 791 rooms. Our Tower room had a great covered patio with incredible views of Waikiki and Diamond Head. We spent a lot of time on the patio watching the surfers, catamarans, and enjoying the island breeze. Our balcony was spectacular :o Our room was updated and very comfortable. I understand the owners completed a full renovation of all rooms in 2026. The beach bar is one of the best in the world. Cold cocktails, beer and wine. Good service. Great views! The drawbacks.... The pool is small and very crowded, especially for 791 rooms. With that said everyone in the pool was smiling and having fun. The beach is also pretty small for such a massive hotel. At high tide the hotel only has about 30 feet of beachfront and it is a public beach so it is crowded Rio style. For us this was not a drawback as we love Waikiki, the birthplace of Hawaiian surfing, and spend most of our time in the surf. So much history as shown throughout the resort especially on the second floor, but also the open Victorian architecture which presents a relaxing atmosphere. Our friends thought we were "rich" for being able to stay here but I don't recall the prices being too different than other hotels in the area. We also got a great offering through the American Express card. We arrived on island early afternoon and attempted to stay up as late as possible. However, we were given a room on the second floor of the historic side of the hotel where they host events on the patio area outside our room. While we were trying to sleep at 8-9pm, a festive wedding was going on with their DJ blasting music, people dancing, yelling, the DJ trying to motivate the audience, etc. It was not a fun night as my wife complained to the hotel staff about the noise interfering with our ability to sleep. It's not the fact the wedding was occuring, but rather the fact the hotel staff didn't let us know they were putting us next to the hotel night club of sorts. Hawaii is typically laid back and quiet, which this was not. The hotel staff sympathisized and mentioned the wedding would be finished by 10pm which it was, and tried to make things better. On day 3 around 4am, the hotel fire alarm sounded and advised everyone to vacate the building. When we vacated, we learned it was a false alarm. This was our last day at the Moana Surfrider which we assumed was a sign the resort wasn't meant to be a relaxing experience for us. The hotel has activities associated with the resort fee such as yoga, that we registered for. It was my first time doing yoga despite mention by my wife over the years to do it. I figured it would be a pleasant surprise for her if I signed us up, and it was a great class out on the same patio area as the wedding. I won't say it was fun for me, but it was an experience that we both enjoyed. The room itself was small which I assume is because it was part of the historic side of the hotel. There wasn't a balcony which we've come to appreciate especially in Hawaii to be able to go outside, view the water, and smell the air. Instead there was a window which we tried to orient ourselves in to get a picture of us with our welcome leis and Waikiki Beach in the background. Very challenging to appreciate a window as well as find space in the room to lay out two large suitcases without having to relocate furniture. The shower leaked water onto the bathroom floor as the cracks in the glass were not sealed so there was a constant wet towel on the floor. The bathroom in general didn't seem very modern considering the hotel had recently undergone years of modernization. Housekeeping was good and treated us well with towels and drinking water. I believe the Tower rooms of the hotel might be more modern and larger, as well as away from the event area of the hotel. I think we would look at other options in the future as we also spent a few days each during this trip at the Sheraton and The Royal Hawaiian which provided a much different experience in comparison.

The room also had numerous scuffs, patched walls and signs of deferred maintenance throughout. The location and staff saved the stay, but the condition of the room fell well below the standard I'd expect from this brand, especially at this price point.

As many mention, the property itself is pristine--calm, spotless rooms, excellent toilets, and comfortably sized showers and tubs. The nightly turndown treats from housekeeping (ranging from chapstick to custom coasters) were a delightful detail we looked forward to each evening. Breakfast was included and decent, though it skews heavily toward traditional Japanese options. As a pregnant guest, I was a bit disappointed by the lack of basics like oatmeal, and the requested toast turned out to be basic white bread. We encountered some exceptional team members. Donna at the front desk was wonderfully warm, remembering my son's name from our second day. A lovely woman at the pool with very long hair and a gentleman who plays in a band were also fantastic--he consistently helped us set up cabanas so I could stay out of the direct sun. Unfortunately, two major issues significantly impacted our stay: * Unprofessional Pool Management: The pool manager (who did not wear a nametag) was surprisingly rude. After another attendant helped us secure a shaded cabana the day prior to ensure I had sun protection while watching my son play, the manager confronted me about "saving" cabanas. Considering the hotel was not full, the aggressive tone taken with a heavily pregnant guest was completely unwarranted and unlike anything I've experienced at a property of this tier. * Misleading Beachfront Experience: The hotel advertises itself as a beachfront resort, but the accessible beach area is extremely minimal with choppy water. Between the lack of loungers or shade and the large Mai Tai catamarans constantly docking right next door, swimming isn't practical, nor is relaxing on the sand if you need sun relief. We truly wanted to love our stay, but given the premium price point, the combination of poor beach access and an unnecessarily hostile interaction at the pool left us thoroughly disappointed.

The location? It's great because it is literally beach front; however, it is on the southern most edge part of that beach area. This means that the beach right outside is jam packed with tourists coming and going and you would have to walk a decent ways up the beach to find a spot. Regardless, a beach front is a beach front so it's nice to get down there quick and enjoy the beach. The hotel is in a great spot in Waikiki because there are tons and tons of shopping stores and food areas within a 15 minute walk so you never really have to drive out. Monkey Pod restaurant down below has great reviews and is delicious, but I personally think their menu is quite small. They also have a pool side bar/cafe that serves drinks, snacks, and meals and is a secondary pool-side restaurant. They play music down there every night. It's very calm, quaint, and peaceful to enjoy a night in the hotel. Unfortunately, the prices of their drinks are ridiculously overpriced. $17 for a Mai Thai not including tip. Insane. The room? I would say pretty average for any decent hotel. It was clean, the bed was good, the pillows were nice and big. The balcony is small, but can sit two people to enjoy the outside. The down side is the rooms of the two towers of the hotel face each other. So you don't get a beach front view unless you pay the big extra for those rooms. My biggest gripe about the room was the shower. The whole 7 days the water would change from warm, hot, very hot, rinse and repeat every few seconds. The price? Very expensive, but that's the price you pay for a beach front hotel PLUS it being on Waikiki beach. There's probably not big deals/sales unless you buy it through Costco Travel which is what I did which saves you probably a couple hundred at the very least. Valet is automatically included which is another 60 per night (not including whatever few bucks you tip them whenever you go out) so this would easily rack up your bill. I'd say the closest free parking is at least a 20 minute walk one way. Despite my rating the hotel a 4/5, would I recommend this spot? It depends. If you are a newcomer to Oahu and want to experience the casual, tourist experience of Oahu, want that beach front hotel, and have the cash, I would recommend this. If you are not a newcomer, there are many other hotels that will suit many other tastes. And honestly, staying at any other hotel outside of Waikiki is probably best if you want to really save on money and see better beaches.

We had requested early check in since we wanted a room for my son to nap in right after we went to the pool that morning and when we went to check in, the room was already ready. At check in, we were welcomed with welcome drinks. We went up to our room where there was a nice view of the ocean. Service was top notch from the valet to housekeeping to the pool people. My kids loved the pool, especially the slide. We definitely will be back again.

If you are a tourist, I highly recommend coming here to check it out.

We get to our "ocean view" at the Rainbow Tower which we paid extra for only to find a gigantic tree blocking the view we believed we paid for. We called to the front desk and Annie very rudely dismissed us before telling us to come downstairs to prove that our view wasn't as the pictures showed when we booked it. She told us to head down to the Mail Drop line and when we got there we're told we were at the wrong place. We then argued with a manager (can't remember her name anymore) for I'd say a good hour. First, we were actually told the manager bounces between towers and wasn't at the Rainbow Tower which ended up being untrue as we saw her in the back when we came down and she ended up being the one to talk to us. We asked to be moved to a different room and we were told this very partial ocean view we got with the room we paid for titled "ocean view" was exactly what we paid for because if we wanted an ocean view we had to book "ocean front". Yet, if you book an ocean view room on their website or through Expedia, the view they advertise is a full ocean view. We definitely felt gaslit and like we were crazy for asking to be moved to a room we paid for. They finally agreed to move us to a "lagoon view" saying they didn't have any ocean front rooms because they're so busy that they're full 365 days of the year. (Meaning they don't really need our business, I'm guessing.) We were not happy with the lagoon view because we paid for an ocean view, but we ultimately had no choice but to concede and they said they would reimburse our resort fees. What's sad is that the employee knew how to work the system more than the manager. Also, another man came down with the same complaints as us, but no employees acknowledged him so he waved his hand, and stormed off. It's been over a month since this happened, and my friend who booked separately from us (who had the same issue) has yet to receive her reimbursement. They said they mailed the check and she never received it. She's been calling them and has received no reply. The elevator situation at the Rainbow Tower is also horrible. Supposedly, they're working out the kinks, but be prepared for long waits and very crowded elevators when you want to go anywhere. Another tip if you choose to stay here. Do NOT bother paying for the cabana at the Tapa pool. We did and no one walks you to the cabana. They tell you to open it up and set it up yourself after they hand you a few waters at the towel stand. There's no food or drink service, and you have to go to the bar next to it to get your food or drinks. It's also very isolated from anything fun. We booked 2 Casabellas at the Super Pool the next day. They were cheaper and MUCH better. They had food and drink service and the server was awesome and the towel desk takes you to them and opens them up for you. Cabanas are a bust and a total waste of money. Overall, the customer service at this hotel is awful and I can only assume it's because they don't need our business since they're full 365 days a year... as they informed us. The nice thing about the hotel is that it has shops and restaurants attached, but it's extremely crowded. Do yourself a favor and book elsewhere.

One day we walked in our room and couldn't tell that it had been cleaned aside from making the bed. However, when we requested towels they came immediately. We needed a band aid and had to have security come. I thought that was thorough but the security guy was not very friendly. The bathrooms could use some updating but it did the job. Very great access to the beach. Was decent for traveling with family.

We also ate one meal poolside since we were trying to relax there one afternoon. We ordered a cheeseburger deluxe with fries. The burger came with about a 3 oz patty, and the fries were as hard as a rock. For the $24 we paid, we probably got a $6 fast food combo meal. We also ordered a Caesar salad - that was a single romaine heart, split lengthwise, with 4 small shavings of Parmesan cheese and a tablespoon of bottled Caesar dressing; $24 too! Soft drinks were $8 each. I know hotel resort poolside food is expensive but I did expect something a little better. The best thing is the valet parking service; very fast and efficient since they always have about 6 valets working all the time. But be advised that this service is not cheap - $52 per day with a $5 tip each in/out trip!

The rooftop pool and hot tub are a nice bonus and a relaxing place to unwind after a day out. The gym is well maintained and has weights, a Peloton, one treadmill, an exercise bike, and two ellipticals. My only wish is that the gym was larger and had a wider variety of exercise equipment. Overall, Hokulani is a comfortable, convenient, family-friendly place to stay, and we always look forward to coming back. Pro tip: you can only ask for a later checkout the day of at 6:00AM. I wish I would have known sooner. Checkout is 10:00AM, late checkout is an hour later at 11:00AM. The receptionist told us all the checkout spots were taken, but was nice enough to let us stay till 10:30AM.

The room has a great galley kitchen with all utensils, glasses, plates, full fridge with ice maker, microwave, etc. The bathroom is so huge and luxurious, separate tub and shower and bidet. My room had NO view, basically looking at another building. I was On the 7th floor. The rooftop pool is spacious and I liked the plunge pool and spa. The bar was closed which was disappointing. For the price and the room details I would definitely stay again.
