I discovered this business on Apple maps, and was excited to visit. There are limited parking spaces. On my way in, I almost bumped into a man and when I said "oh" to acknowledge his presence, he remained silent as if I wasn't there. I merely assumed that he was a customer who was on his way out. When I entered, the same man came back in, and after observing him, I realized that he worked there. In my opinion, he appeared disengaged and disgruntled. It was my first time in a koi shop and I had many questions, so I approached him. I was curious about the price, complexity, and maintenance. The only aspect that I did enjoy was looking at the koi fish. The element that distinguished this particular experience was that he didn't hesitate to offer a sarcastic reply. When I inquired about the price of a particular koi pond, as innumerable customers have undoubtedly done in the past, he seemed visibly annoyed, and said it was like asking the price of a car at a large car dealership and followed up with "okayyy" which signaled to me a hyperbolic, sarcastic, and impatient tone. The reason I physically came in was to ask questions, as do others when they are unfamiliar with certain products. This is particularly of great importance to me since I am a teacher, and when I, myself, am presented with a question, I am solely focused on informing. Being condescending never crosses my mind, especially with a customer. Putting others down to feel more intelligent is usually a coping mechanism stemming from deep-seated insecurity. He was not only lackadaisical about his customer service, but categorically appeared annoyed by my presence. I almost felt like I was in a different country. We are trained in the United States to immediately greet the customer and offer ongoing assistance while being excited that they might be a potential buyer, but that was not my experience here. Afterwards, I wanted to discover whether others had similar experiences; therefore, I decided to read this business's Yelp reviews, and I found several that confirmed my experience. On their website, they state that "...we are always happy to help you in any way..." but, once again, that was not my experience. I felt compelled to Google him and discovered that he was a co-owner: Greg Zuccolotto. Luckily, I have many options in Southern California, and I won't be conducting business here. This is a very cool place. A little hard to get to being on Laguna canyon road but worth it. Knowledgeable staff and a huge selection of koi, plus lots of aquatic plants. Hidden gem for sure. Open for over thirty years in the same spot. Walk around, feel the peace and serenity of the fish. The only wish I have is they serve Japanese tea there. I suppose it they served tea, boba, and coffee they would have a lot of people there which might make it a tourist destination. Although I'm not (yet) in the market for my own koi pond, I absolutely love koi fish and since I lived in the canyon, I thought I'd stop in to check out what Laguna Koi Ponds was all about. Well I was in for a treat! I could not believe how many koi fish they had - ranging in color, age, size, etc. I had no idea how beautifully diverse koi fish could be! Not only were the fish impressive, but the gorgeous habitat and vegetation made the place seem more like a sanctuary or retreat! They have such gorgeous pools, ponds, waterfalls, and plants and flowers that made it the most delightful experience! I could've looked around for hours, it was so peaceful and serene. And it really does make you fall in love with the koi fish too! I felt a little bad for being there so long with no real intention of buying koi fish, so when a friendly staff member asked if he could answer any questions, I sheepishly told him that I'm not yet in the market to buy any koi fish or build a pond in my yard - but that I just really wanted to look around. To my delight, he completely understood and seemed genuinely glad that I was having so much fun looking around. He answered my questions, showed me around, and seemed proud to be able to show me their amazing grounds, ponds, and selection of koi. Great service. Had a clean out of the 2,500 gal koi pond and waterfall we inherited when we moved into our house two years ago. Forgot to take a "before" pic, but it was really brown looking. All the side rocks and bottom looked like they were covered in dirt/mud. Dan and Sal did an awesome job cleaning out everything! Took great care moving the fish to a temporary tank. Then went to work practically cleaning and hosing down every rock in there working from the top of the waterfall downward. Definitely more than I expected. They were great in answering my questions not just on the clean out process but taking care of the pond in general. Highly recommend and will be using again whenever I do a clean out. read more

Laguna Koi has zero - Customer service. We were a monthly customer years ago and left because their service team was subpar. We tried them again 10 years later after we heard they had improved. They have NOT. Do yourself a favor and don't use Laguna Koi for monthly pond service. They over chemical your ponds and their team lacks even the most basic pond knowledge!! We also had a pond issue and as a monthly customer could not get anyone to come out to inspect. They string you along and have zero customer service! read more

First time here was ok, we did not have a pond yet. We were asking questions still and getting ideas. The older gentleman working at the time had no interest in helping whatsoever. He was visibly annoyed by our questions. You could tell he was answering out of obligation. I am pretty sure he made his assumptions quickly we were probably wasting his time or were "small fish" with our backyard pond so not really worth his time. I am sure their primary business is big ponds in mansions on the coast? At least that's how it felt to us. We took the hint! We had our pond built by a different company, came out beautifully and we're very happy. However we love coming here, all our koi fish are from here and probably 60% of our plants. What really makes this place were the younger guys working here. We've probably been 5x since then and they really take the time to walk with you and answer all your questions. Love coming here after a long day at the beach. There are several different koi's in different pond areas. All for purchase. There are some beautiful ones that are quite pricey. I miss my koi because I used to buy them here but after A huge raccoon family had sushi night, I have no more koi. I just come here and just look at the beautiful koi's. Owner is nice and knowledgeable. Definitely good place to buy rare koi. Just make sure you have it secured so no wild animals can get to it. read more

The house we are staying at has a koi pond in their yard and they were looking to get a couple more fish for their pond. We were asked if we would like to join them and learn a little about koi fish. We had a nice drive into Laguna and pulled in. There is not a lot of signs telling you where it is but they had been there before. When we walked into the outdoor area of this beautiful business we were amazed at the size of the tanks. There was the sound of gushing water and bubbling water, keeping the water fresh for the fish. We started at the first tank we came to and looked at the different color combinations that the koi could have, orange, red, blue, brown, gold, white and the list goes on and on, super cool! My friends were greeted by a really friendly and nice guy who was explaining the different markings and color combinations. This gentleman was very knowledgeable, Greg was his name. We looked at many tanks of fish as Greg explained the names of the fish as it pertains to their breeding. The fish come from Japan where they are bread. There are various sizes of fish and various prices to go along with it. We watch as my friend chose a Gosanke/ Sanke what a beautiful fish, they also chose a Goshiki , another beautiful fish. These fish were on the larger size and they were not cheap. They also picked up food and some enzymes for the water. These fish were bagged and boxed for transport . Greg was very thoughtful and knowledgeable when answering our many questions. Greg was an obvious expert, the fish made it home safely and love their new home, they were a beautiful addition to the existing koi pond. Highly recommended read more

Staff is very patient in explaining to us the different varieties and help us chose the best ones for us. Plenty of tips too on how to keep these fish healthy and happy. This is our third time here. Our previous koi got poached by racoon during a stormy night. Apparently raccoons live to forage when it's raining hard bcs they know all the pets and indoor. I have been a customer of Laguna Koi for over 20 years. Ben and his crew have been instrumental not only on fish knowledge, but water quality, disease prevention and adjusting to the ever-changing conditions of my pond. I live in Trabuco Canyon and my pond backs up to open wilderness. I have lost fish over the years to many different predators, but due to a little neglect and a heat wave I lost 6 large koi to an algae bloom. I thought it was time to add a couple more water falls and large rocks to create protection from predators, but also create more shade for my new fish to be added soon. Since I decided to bury all my 1 1/2 pipe in mortar and plastic cement this became a challenge trouble shooting for air leaks. I purchased my new pump and all the accessories from Laguna Koi. When I had some difficulties getting the new pump primed and that's where Laguna Koi's Oscar Gonzales helped me trouble shoot and with a few minor adjustments I was able to get everything working. On multiple visits to Laguna Koi during my rebuild I observed Oscar's interaction with visitors, as well as customers, to help them understand the beauty of koi. His passion and knowledge for his work shows with every interaction he has! I can't recommend Laguna Koi more. read more

Went here to pick up a platium ogon. Ended up buying platinum,yamabuki and orenji ogon. Bought the platinum and yamabuki at the same pond. Exceptional clean, bright scales, thick shoulder,big head,big mouth for potential growth. Those two are well price for the quality this place offer. I've been to many koi places in OC, this place has the biggest selections. Koi are ranges from 30$ to 150$ and range all the way from a few thousands depend on your needs. Greg helped me, nice guy, gave me very insightful tips to maintain koi deeper color. Greg has a much bigger facility to quarantine his koi so he has unlimited Koi supply, he usually restock at his retail location in Laguna Beach when his pond is depleted. If you really want good quality koi and don't mind paying a little more, start looking at the 150$ pond, that's where you will get your money worth. Spent about 500$ here for my first visit, and plan to come back for a few doitsu showa,maybe a few ginrin kohaku and ginrin benigoi. If you like koi that shine under the sun, then ogon,ginrin Doitsu, kojaku and beni kikokuryu is the style you should look for. Highly recommend this place, will be back during harvest to find a few hidden gem to add to my pond. read more

I volunteer at the church I belong to. We have beautiful gardens and water features, one being a koi pond. So I asked for one coincidentally the shubunkin I picked was "special" and costed $150. I'm disappointed that a cute little koi shop can be so corrupt.
