There's usually something special about tiny family-owned eateries tucked inconspicuously into strip malls. I won't lie about Lai Thai. They serve some of the tastiest Thai food in town. The dining room is simply but smartly decorated. This time, I began with a cup of tom yum soup that was yum-yum, and my Missus ordered chicken noodle soup ("Thai penicillin," yah?). We then shared a shrimp & vegetable tempura app that rivaled any we've had at a Japanese restaurant. My entrée, spicy catfish, remained crisp in the coconut curry broth to the last bite. My Missus indulged in the pepper steak, which was also superb. Portions are generous and the prices are right. No language barrier here; we had a server who spoke fluent English. Lai Thai so far is my favorite Thai restaurant in Morton Grove! The service is great! The staff are very friendly and I felt like they truly cared about me as a customer. I ordered for take out: 2 pad Kee mao (1 spicy, 1 medium) 1 spicy fried rice with beef (heat level: spicy) The pad Kee mao has very good flavor, 2 pieces of shrimp and some chicken. The order that I asked to be spicy was pretty spicy. I had to mix the medium with the spicy so I could even it out. The only thing I wish were different is that the noodles be longer. They were a bit too broken, so it was harder to eat each bite. The spicy fried rice is basically basil fried rice, as told by the employee. It was good, but lacked basil flavor. I wished it had more basil because that's the best part of basil fried rice. I also asked for it to be spicy and it was a bit too spicy, especially eating it side-by-side with the spicy pad Kee mao. Overall, I enjoy Lai Thai's food, restaurant atmosphere, and service. Long-Time Customer - Terrible Experience Today; Will NOT Be Coming Back My family and I ordered the Three Flavor Fish, which, according to the menu, is 'lightly fried till crisped.' However, when it arrived, it was clear that it had been fried for far too long. The waitress gave us a dull dinner knife to cut through the fish. I'm not exaggerating when I say cutting into this fish was like cutting through a thick piece of cardboard with a butter knife. After several minutes of struggling, we finally tasted the fish, and it was extremely tough on the inside and overly crunchy on the outside. It was obvious that the fish had been overcooked and left in the fryer for too long. Having eaten many Red Snapper dishes at various Thai restaurants, this was by far the worst we've had. The high price of $46 only added to our disappointment. We kindly informed the head waitress that the fish was overcooked and very difficult to eat. Her response was, "Oh ok, sounds good," before she walked away and did not inform the chefs about our issue. We understand that mistakes happen in the restaurant business, but the lack of any visible concern or effort to address our complaint was disheartening. Most restaurants would offer a slight discount or at least inquire if there was something they could do to rectify the situation, especially when the issue concerns their most expensive dish. None of this was offered, and we ended up paying and leaving. I've ordered takeout from this place several times before and never experienced such poor service. I would advise anyone considering Thai food to avoid this restaurant and try 'Chef of Siam Thai' or 'Krua Thai' instead. At least the staff at those places treat you like a valued customer. read more

One evening, my wife and I went there for dinner. I ordered a chicken dish, but it had a strong, unpleasant odor, likely because something went wrong during the preparation. I just tolerated it and finished my meal. As we were leaving, I discreetly mentioned to the staff, so other customers wouldn't hear, "Your chicken had a strong smell today." To my shock, she started yelling loudly, asking why I was complaining after finishing the meal. I was stunned and appalled, and I haven't returned since. They don't know how to treat customers properly. While I can understand if their English isn't perfect, someone with such a poor attitude shouldn't be in the service industry. My favorite take out Thai place! I've never dined in but we order at least twice a month now. Why haven't we discovered this place earlier?!? Food quality, taste, and price is good! Food is authentic. I was craving for Thai, as I typically do. We have a nearby place that we always take out from, but my dining buddy isn't a fan of that place. So what did I do? Turn to my Yelp app. I've drove past this all the time when I'm on Dempster, but never went in or checked out on Yelp. Thanks to my Yelp friends who have reviewed this place, it was promising. Just a note-- I tend to like my food sweet, and this place is just that. Chicken satay is sweet, panang curry is sweet. Pad Thai and pad see ew are good. All the food we've had are delicious! I keep forgetting to take photos of the food because I'm too busy devouring it down as soon as it arrives my home. One feedback to the restaurant is that the rice portion is too small. When I eat my panang curry, it's not enough rice, and I usually have to use more rice. Their rice take out container is small side, as opposed to typical Chinese rice take out (white) box, which is bigger, I'd say medium size. We're a big fan of Lai Thai! Located in a strip mall, practically next to Savory Crust, Lai Thai is very convenient with parking and it's location, right off of Dempster. The restaurant has a strong following and can fill-up rather quickly as they only have about 12 small tables. My favorites here are the Pad Thai, pad se ewe, pad woon sen and Tom Yum soup. The portion size is a bit on the smaller side and it's hard to figure out why because noodles are relatively cheap. So plan on ordering two items per person or three, if you are a big eater like moi. read more

I apologized and we all had a good laugh. So now I went next door and ordered at Lai Thai the following dishes. I like my dishes spicy, but my wife can't eat it if it's too spicy so I went with a milder version. * Tom Yum Soup- Hot & Sour Chicken in chicken broth w/straw mushrooms, bell peppers, lime juice and lemongrass delicious * Panang Curry w/Catfish - lightly fried catfish fillets coated w/Panang coconut curry, Pea pods, peppers & fresh basil. Very good, but smallish portions * Grilled Eggplant - Eggplant Grilled w/sautéed minced shrimp, ground chicken, chopped garlic peppers and basil leaves excellent. * Spring Rolls - mehhh very average (nothing special) Everything I had was very tasty except the spring rolls which were very average. This thai place is just alright. I'm very used to Thai portions being big portions (usually it's 2 portions for me), and was kinda sad I was about to finish it all in one sitting. I ordered chicken Tom yum soup. It was a personal portion - not the shareable size. The mushrooms tasted straight from the can and the chicken was really dry for it be in a soup. I ordered beef pad Thai and they brought out chicken instead. I sent it back requesting beef and they said that they got the order right because I had ordered chicken....but no I ordered chicken Tom yum and BEEF pad Thai. When I finally got it, it was just decent. My boyfriend got the pad wood sen. it was really good! The beef that was prepared with his was in the same marinade that came in my pad Thai.
