I was greeted by a relatively new LBC employee who proved to be courteous, well-informed, and patient as he answered countless questions and supervised my test drives of two excellent trikes. I recently bought a Terra Trike "Rogue" model recumbent cycle from this shop's Fair Oaks location. I did a lot of research on 'bent bikes and zeroed in on LBS. It took less than two weeks for the order to be shipped and built, but it felt like an eternity because I was so excited to get this trike. What a great buying experience ! I cant recommend Clay and Laid Back Cycles highly enough. Well worth the long drive i took to get there. They offer appointments and you get 100% of their attention and amazing expertise. Clay spent a lot of time with me, explaining the differences between trikes and makers. My father-in-law had major knee surgery when he was in his 40s and subsequently resorts to riding a recumbent bike with hand pedals. We made an appointment to test drive a specific bike. When we arrived, after driving for over an hour and a half, we were told the bike was no longer available for testing. Needless to say we did not get a courtesy call to inform us of the change. Laidback's failure to keep the appointment, despite their assurances in advance, is a terrible business practice, good luck. I have purchased two Terra Trikes from Laid Back Cycles in the past month. The first experience was so good that I went back for a second, even though I live in Oakland and the trikes are going to Southern California (driven down there by me one by one -- my decision, they can also ship). Clay, Joel, and James get top marks for amazing customer service: responsive, friendly, clearly knowledgeable about their products, happy to offer test rides, and patient. I originally researched trike shops in the OC/LA area, but felt most confident going with Laid Back Cycles. Very happy with this decision. As for recumbent trikes generally, these are great for all ages. I have watched as two 75+ year-old women who did not ride bikes as adults have become *obsessed* with riding. It's a win-win for them. Getting excited about learning a new skill while feeling safe, finding a new form of exercise during these restricted times, getting fresh air, interacting more with other residents in the neighborhood (lots of waving and thumbs up, apparently), and even enjoying the thrill of going down a good hill! My husband and I drove 2.5 hours to try out one of the e recumbants. Spencer was our assistant. First of all, his patience and humilty was impressive for helping a 66 year old woman learn the various gadgets. The shop itself has a positive ambience, indicating a team spirit among the employees. I watched how they interacted with each other as they took turns helping with adjustments and such. It appeared that they were enjoying the experience as much as I was.... Now...we decided to buy, so left to get some $$ and take lunch. They worked through their own lunch hour so that the bike would ready for us by 2:00-ish. Spencer had me sit down for final adjustment...and here is the reason you go to shops like this to get fitted. Spencer noticed as I was pedaling that a small adjustment was needed for my left leg. Now I did not tell him that one leg is slightly shorter than the other..his expert eye caught this, and he took the chain apart to make the left side 1 half inch shorter than the right side. After he did this, it felt WAY better, though I would not have known this adjustment was needed without his experienced eye. Because Spencer made this so fun for me, I went on to buy a bunch of other stuff...the shoes, the bag, 2 mirrors, support handles, the rack on the back, the head rest....I was having a blast! I will go back to this place for any future needs. By far, what every business should be like. The customer service is excellent at Laid Back Cycles. Not only am I very happy with my purchase of my Catrike Trail, but because of their service I will be going back when I upgrade to the Expedition. When I first came in (just a walk-in from the street) they greeted me and treated me as though I had been coming in for years. I asked a ton of questions and spent the better half of the afternoon there. Although they were busy, they still found time to answer all my questions and asked me a few questions of their own which help me into moving in the right direction. I must have tried 5 or 6 different trikes that day. They didn't ask for anything from me. Just let me take the trikes outside and rode around (which I rode about 2hours).It was wonderful! No "demo"trikes to ride to try to hook ya into any specific model. It was "just pick anyone you want to try here on our showroom floor". And there were a bunch to choose from. There was no pressure to buy anything. In fact, I left and came back almost a month later. They remembered who I was and picked up where I left off. After I made my purchase at Laid Back, I went on a cross country trike tour with a stroke awareness org. I was gone for 3 months. Normally, you should have your trike dialed in after approx. 100 miles or at least within the first 2 months. I called and told them what I was doing and that I wouldn't be back for a few months. They told me, "No problem. Just let us know when you get back and we will take care of you". This is how customers should be treated and is one of the biggest factors in why I will return to Laid Back Cycles. They don't treat you like a customer. They treat you like family. They are honest, fair, helpful, knowledgeable, and most important, want you to be happy. I made 2 great investments the day I bought my trike. My girlfriend and I made the decision to go the recumbent tricycle route after some joint issues made conventional bike riding more difficult. We couldn't be happier! Drove up all the way from Orange County, CA because our research pointed to this being the top place in the state to make our purchase. It definitely turned out to be true, and she and I are now proud owners of twin Catrike 559s. We called ahead several times to make sure that there would be a choice of trike models for us to test ride, and if possible, take home with us in the minivan. Scott and Clay gave us lots of phone time up front to discuss our criteria and their suggestions. On the day of our appointment, Clay "walked" us through the various models and their features, and we took test rides on multiple models, including on-the-spot sizing modifications (my girlfriend and I are quite different in stature . . .) for a full 3 hours. Throughout, James was the mechanical "tech master," much like Simon Pegg in a Mission: Impossible movie. A complete build of one of the bikes (name of builders unknown) and a folding/unfolding lesson were completed by closing time, allowing us to take both trikes with us back to the Southland. 100% satisfied! read more
