Good, not great. Went here based on Yelp reviews and photos. Turns out several of the things found in photos on Yelp, they no longer make "to save costs" according to the lady behind the counter. When we did order, it's always a pet peeve of mine to see an employee weigh everything and remove food from your bowl a sliver at a time to remove fractions of ounces to make sure the scale is exact. Gives the impression is all about profit margins. The tiny scoops ultimately made the rice to protein ratio WAY off. Just SO. MUCH. RICE to make the bowl appear more full to compensate for the undersized & carefully measured protein. While the flavors were good, the rock hard (raw or dried out) rice grains in the bowl were no fun either. Overall just a little disappointing given how much I love fresh poké! read more

Hiked up the Traverse Mountain hill to try Laid Back poke for lunch today. After reading a number of reviews, I set my expectations to neutral so I could anticipate what my experience would be like. The staff was super friendly when I arrived and there was hardly anyone around at noon. I ordered a regular poke bowl for $13.50 with rice and just as other reviews mentioned, the fish portions were skimpy. I wouldn't even call them scoops, but I ended up with spicy tuna and a shoyu-ish salmon. Because of the lack of fish in my bowl, I opted for every topping, but even the toppings couldn't save the bowl. The rice was clumpy and mushy, the lack of flavor and amount of fish was disappointing, and all I could taste were pineapple and seaweed salad. If you're looking for true, authentic poke experiences and good quality, I'd recommend driving the extra 20 minute south to Savage Poke. This joint wasn't for me but it seems like others like it for their non-poke bowls. read more

I went out to lunch here with friends and felt like the employee had no real gusto. She didn't acknowledge us and was just a bit awkward to interact with. She took her time, I mean the bowl was beautiful but it took awhile and a line formed pretty quickly. The food itself was good, I got the laid back signature bowl. It's a bit pricey and they're very careful with the serving of the proteins which I totally get being located in the middle of Utah. I've only had "grocery store" poke before this experience, so this was definitely a step up. I also picked up a spam musubi, I've seen them before but never had the opportunity to try it. The rice to meat ratio was a bit much for me. It was rice/spam/rice, so I ended up removing half of the rice and rewrapping the seaweed. I live pretty far away and don't see myself making a return trip. I'm glad that I was able to try it! read more

Just because Laid Back Poke Shack is not next to the ocean, does not mean that you should skip this place. IMO, they have the best poke in Utah! I went in with average expectations, considering the seafood in Utah County is not great and they were exceeded by a long shot. I ordered the Laid Back bowl, which included Shrimp, Ahi and Kalua Pork on rice. The Ahi was fresh and the flavors on both the fish and shrimp made it exceptionally good. I also liked having the combination of the pork with the fish. Overall, it was so flavorful and filling, I will definitely be coming back. The atmosphere feels like you are in a beach town and the staff was totally friendly. You can also buy a Hawaiian Sun drink to go with your bowl (I always get Lilikoi Passion.) I recommend coming here if you're craving a tasty poke bowl! read more

I have never had poke before so I don't know how it compares to other places or poke you would get in the islands. But I was pleased with the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. They have a lot of options of proteins and toppings. The fish is fresh and toppings as well. The one thing I wish was a little different was wishing I had a little bit less rice and a little more cabbage. But if you add some eel sauce to the rice it really adds flavor. Found this place on Yelp and just had to try it and wanted to compare this place to Poke Luau in Midvale. Different type of menu and not as many choices as Poke Luau but was very delicious! Their other location is in Holladay which I haven't visited yet. Ordered the Surf & Turf which was ginger salmon, Kalua pork, pineapples and Maui cut onions on the top of white rice and seaweed salad. It was very delicious! Service was also great as someone was walking around asking to fill drinks and clearing plates etc. That was pretty awesome considering this isn't a sit down type restaurant where you order off the menu type of place. We have always loved this place for Poke but I feel like the quality has gone down over time. Pros: Helpful staff. Quality fish. Lots of toppings and customization options. This sets it apart from places like Savage Fish that mainly focus on quality fish and rice. Cons: They no longer pre-marinade a lot of their fish which means it can be fairly bland. I liked it when they had it all pre-made. I also think them making it to order really slows them down. We were the only ones in line and it took about 20 minutes for 4 bowls. I don't know if they are using different non sushi rice or if it was just dry when we went but the texture was off to me. And the portions have gotten sooo small. Note: We went a few days ago and the spicy crab tasted and smelled really off. So much that we had to throw it out. My husband has an iron gut and he was sick after eating it When we told the staff they happily got us new fish, but didn't throw away the crab or even check it. That experience will make it hard to keep coming back which is such a hummer because we really do like it. read more

I like that this place is simple and to-the-point. They focus on poke bowls and have a few accompanying side options. For the uninitiated, "poke" is diced raw fish served either on its own or in a bowl with rice/noodles, vegetables and a light drizzling of sauce. It's one of the main dishes in Hawaiian cuisine. Laid Back Poke shack gives you plenty of protein options, heavy on the raw fish as that's the nature of the authentic poke bowl. But, they have cooked options as well. (Because, #knowyourmarket.) The signage posted indicates where the fish is sourced and how fresh it is, which is really cool. If you're gonna be eating raw fish, it's comforting to have some reassurance that it hasn't been sitting around for a while. My bowl did taste very fresh and the flavors were nice. It was a generous portion and really the only thing I was missing was a little more crunch, perhaps in the way of some fried noodle or wonton crisps or maybe even some panko? Having some options like that would be great for people just dipping their toes into the poke waters and folks like me who just like a little more variance in texture. I was pleased to see that they had musubi, too! Definitely get some of that while you're there! I ordered the spicy tuna bowl and it was overall really flavorful especially with the sauce. They have a ton of flavors of poke and a lot of different options of fresh fish. Definitely will be coming back on one of my lunch breaks again. The ponzu sauce is incredible on the salad and adds some extra flavor if you need it. The service was also incredible! It definitely gives off a family run atmosphere, and the moment you walk in the door you feel welcome. Probably about 1 cup of brown rice topped with about 8 oz of tofu cubes and about 2 Tbsp of the seaweed salad on top. I didn't see or taste any seaweed, only green onions and red peppers. The dish wasn't that flavorful. Definitely not worth $12. I would have paid $6 tops for this. I felt like I was being gouged because the profit margin on the fish bowls might be too thin and they're making it up by overcharging the plant-based eaters. The staff member was helpful, even to the point of going and quickly making me a fish that had run out. These "pick your own" type of places can be make or break on what you choose. This place is the real deal! Whenever I get a hankering for seafood this is the place to go! LBPS flies in their fish fresh three times a week! It is definitely one of my favorite places to eat at. Anytime I was anywhere near their first location in Holladay I had to stop by. They have a very large Poke selection and they've I caused other things like fresh fruit and vegetables to shake up their menu a lot. I got the regular bowl which is filling. I got the Spicy Ginger Tuna, Kimchi Tako (octopus), Spicy Salmon, and Seaweed Salad over brown rice. All the fish was fresh, the octopus was fresh as well. Usually I get a Spam Musubi with it as well but I just stuck with the poke bowl. I recommend trying the Shoyu Wasabi sauce as well but be warned it will clear your sinuses. Overall I highly recommend it. I fear that Utah County isn't the best market for a place like this. People here tend to be very tame with the food they eat, so something that is different like this may be a turnoff. However I highly suggest you give it a try and taste food of a different culture! You won't find fresher fish in all of Utah Valley. read more

Super delicious and fresh poke. They let you sample as many of the poke as you like, so you know you're going to like what you get. I love hat you can have salad greens instead of the rice. My only complaint is that I wish they'd use larger bowls to put everything in, cause I like to eat the greens before the poke, and everything kind of spills out when I do that, but that's just my personal preference.
