dr. charlie carmichael is an absolute gem…read more he has been my dentist over 10 years, and his staff is & has always been nice and professional. dr. carmichael has a gentle hand, EXCELLENT bedside manners, and is genuinely concerned about his patients - in 2021 i had unexpected pain over early in the am (between 1:30 - 2:30) & he phoned me back & told me to come into the office as soon as i could after his office opened. upon arriving, they fit me in as a walk-in & dr. carmichael examined me & informed an upper molar on the left had cut a hole on the backside of gum and needed to be extracted - approximately 20 mins later, that tooth was outta there. on 06.13.24, i had a scheduled appointment for a wisdom tooth issue, and again, within 20 mins, the gentle hands surgically removed the tooth. i have had very minimum pain, even after the local anesthesia began to subside. he is a god-send to the industry, and without hesitation, i highly recommended dr. charlie carmichael blessings. have a happy 1, dinkens

I have never met Dr. Shaw, but I have only heard good things about him as well. I have many phobias. The most uncommon phobia of mine would probably be the fear of pedicures. Two of my more common phobias, which you may have as well, are that of dentist work and needles. I called to schedule an appointment as a new patient because of some pain I was having and got a spot about 4 weeks later. However, less than a week after that call, they found an earlier appointment for me, so I ended up being seen less than a week after the appointment request. The office is very inviting. Everything appears to be very well organized and professional. The ladies at the front desk are very friendly, and have been in a good mood every time I have been in. The whole place is decorated with warm and inviting autumn colors. Very relaxing. The hygienist was very friendly and professional. They were all in a good mood as well. Despite the fact that I hadn't been to the dentist in over 5 years, I was very comfortable the whole time. The chairs have massage pad things and there is a TV with beach scenes, or an aquarium, or something similar. After the cleaning and x-rays Dr. Sherrill came in. He was very professional. He is soft spoken and friendly, yet not so friendly that he wastes your time. They are very efficient and really don't waste time in your day. I had to go back twice to fill cavities. For such procedures, you're offered many comforts: sound proof headphones with satellite radio (or you can plug in your iPod as I did), massaging chair, and nitrous oxide a.k.a. the gas. The assistant is very friendly and remembered me the second time. The first time I didn't opt for the gas. The second time I did. While the second was obviously much better (how can you not love the gas?), the first certainly was not a bad experience even with my phobias. Both times they were very quick and efficient, yet took the time to ask me if I was okay and make sure I was still comfortable. The first time when I wasn't zonked by the gas, he was talking about what he was doing the whole time, which was very comforting. My hubby who is not afraid of dentists or needles went in for one single filling and didn't even notice when Dr. Sherrill stuck the needle in. I would absolutely not recommend this dental office I had been coming to this office for over 20 years back when Dr. Shaw was my dentist but when he retired it's a place I wouldn't recommend. I called to reschedule my appointment 24 hours in advance they said I would be charged 85.00 because it required a 48 hour notice. I didn't realize I had signed saying I knew about this I thought I had signed for the financial responsibility for that particular service I got that day (that's my fault) but after being a patient for over 20 years I believe I shouldn't pay that when I only wanted to reschedule due to an emergency. But anyway the office is no longer a place I want to go. I chose another Dallas dentist. Dr. Shaw I really missed the type of practice you ran. I took my mom to the Ideal Dental on Midway and Northwest Highway today, and it was one frustrating…read moreexperience after another. The lobby was extremely hot while we waited. They took my mom back for X-rays and told us they would come get me afterward, but they forgot until my mom reminded them. Then we found out their regular X-ray machine wasn't working, so they had to take the X-rays manually while she was sitting in the dental chair. After the dentist examined my mom, she told us my mom could keep her crown and that they would remove the temporary filling and place a permanent composite filling that same day. I specifically asked if they could do it that day, and the dentist said yes. She and her assistant left, and we waited...and waited. Eventually, a technician came in to discuss antibiotics and confirmed they were still going to do the composite filling. She said she would get the dentist. We waited even longer. Then another staff member walked by and told us we were free to leave. I explained that we had been told my mom would be getting her permanent filling that day, so we continued waiting. A short time later, the office manager came in and asked if we wanted to schedule an appointment for Monday because they could not do the filling that day. I explained that the dentist had specifically told us it would be done today. The office manager responded that the dentist doesn't manage the schedule--she does--and that there was no availability. My question was simple: if that was the case, why were we told to wait? What disappointed me the most wasn't that they couldn't fit us in--it was the complete lack of communication and accountability. At no point did the office manager apologize for the confusion, the miscommunication, or for keeping us waiting. Instead, she repeatedly talked over me and simply offered us an appointment for Monday. My mom decided we'd rather go somewhere else, and the response was basically, "You have every right to." Unfortunately, this isn't our first disappointing experience with Ideal Dental. We've received different information from different locations, and I was even sold a dental plan that I haven't been able to use, which has been a waste of money. This experience only reinforced why we choose a private dental practice: clear communication, accountability, and respect for our time. We'll be going back to the dentist we've trusted for years, and I would strongly recommend choosing a private practice over Ideal Dental. Based on everything we experienced, I cannot recommend Ideal Dental, especially the Midway and Northwest Highway location.

I loved this place on my first visit. They have dogs! They got me in quickly! They were so kind and…read morefriendly! It was heaven in dental office form! For context, I have freakishly good teeth. I've never had a cavity, didn't have wisdom teeth, and always get rave reviews from hygienists and dentists despite never flossing. At my first visit, they asked to do x-rays because I hadn't had any in over a decade (you'll understand why in a minute). To my knowledge, they made no effort to get my old records. But, okay, fine, I'll do the x-rays. Surprise, surprise, my x-rays looked great. Here's more context: I'm a PhD researcher in a field related to neuroanatomy. At my next visit, I declined x-rays. Why? Because of studies like this: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6341170/ which report things like this: "This study showed evidence that the increased risk of head and neck cancer due to exposure to low doses of dental diagnostic X-rays cannot be ignored." "Since the oral cavity is anatomically located near the head and neck, dental X-ray examinations seem to affect the brain and neck areas. The correlation of X-rays with brain and thyroid cancers has been reported for many decades and seems to explain this finding." ALSO, American Dental Association clinical recommendations specify that dentists should order dental X-rays ONLY after they have conducted a clinical exam suggesting there could be a problem worth investigating. Unfortunately, this is not what typically happens, Dr. Brenner added. Many people are given routine dental X-rays before they are examined, and that's 'not ideal practice,' he said. If a dental hygienist orders routine X-rays before you see your dentist, Dr. Benavides suggested asking them to hold off. 'I would say, "I would feel more comfortable if someone examines me first to determine if I really need these,"' she said. A dentist should always explain why they are necessary and how they will benefit your health." Did Dr. Wendy Skulman examine me first to determine if I really needed x-rays? Absolutely not. Let's go back to that second visit: I declined x-rays. The hygienist got VERY fussy with me and made me sign a waiver. The waiver is worded as though declining x-rays is a health risk, which is absurd because opting out of dental x-rays at every dentist visit is actually RECOMMENDED BEST PRACTICE in terms of reducing risk for head and neck cancers. I signed the waiver, even though it was blatantly inaccurate, because the hygienist refused to proceed otherwise. She then did my cleaning. Then Dr. Wendy Skulman popped in for LITERALLY less than two minutes. The hygienist told her I'd declined x-rays, so Dr. Wendy had me open my mouth for about 30 seconds, poked one or two teeth, and then left. Seriously. She definitely didn't do a full exam (which, again, should be a prerequisite for determining if x-rays are even necessary, per the aforementioned American Dental Association clinical guidelines). Moreover, Dr. Wendy showed me NONE of the kindness and friendliness I got on my first visit. She was cold and clearly irritated with me for not getting x-rays. I can only assume x-rays are a money-maker for them, especially for someone like me who doesn't have dental insurance. I was explicitly told that they would REFUSE to see me if I declined x-rays at my next visit. I couldn't help but laugh a little at that and told them I would happily go somewhere else. I'd sure love to find a dentist who cares about following clinical guidelines and reducing cancer risk for their patients. TO SUMMARIZE: 1. In my experience, Skulman Dental is not following clinical guidelines regarding the frequency of dental x-rays for their patients or how to determine which patients actually NEED x-rays. Requiring x-rays at every visit is NOT in line with American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines. 2. If they're up-to-date on the scientific literature and clinical guidelines from the ADA, they are knowingly disregarding best practice and knowingly putting their patients at increased risk of head and neck cancers for NO CLINICAL REASON. 3. If they're NOT up-to-date on the scientific literature and clinical guidelines from the ADA, well, that's concerning too. 4. In my experience, if you decline x-rays, you will be treated like trash and told not to come back if you plan on declining x-rays again in the future.
