Camped at Lake McSwain for 2 nights along the water. Beautiful spot. Fishing was decent. Campsite nice, until it got dark. And then the German cockroaches came out of and crawled everywhere! I'll fish there again but won't be camping there again. Way too many cockroaches. read more

Mine and my husbands camping trip was amazing. We camped at Lake McClure at McClure Point, campground C21. We had an amazing view of the water and the boat launch ramp was only like a 2 minute car ride from our site. Our campsite had a water faucet and electrical hookups. It was a beautiful site, the first night we were there it was really busy, and pretty noisy, but that's to be expected, as it was the weekend. The only reason it was a 4 star review and not a 5 star review is because the bathrooms/showers were absolutely disgusting. I would recommend bringing a portable toilet and a small hose to shower at the campsite. read more

What a lovely trip! We stayed in Cabin D2. Nice cabin; nice view of the lake. Forgot to bring a couple items (salt/pepper, soap for bathroom sink.) The pots and pans need to be replaced unless you don't mind cooking with scratched pans to release aluminum into your food. Next time, I will bring my own pots and pans. You are supposed to clean the cabin upon checkout otherwise incur a $50 cleaning fee. The floors are swept. Negative: No mop is available. Our floors was incredibly dirty!! Bring slippers or flip flops and plan to wear them inside or have filthy feet. Only cell service available is Verizon and spotty at most. The AC units are really loud. Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper. Shoot, just bring earplugs. They are loud at night. It gets warm and humid if you shut them off at night. Flies are an issue so keep cabin doors close. They do have a flyswatter available Friday the large RVs roll in, tents are everywhere. If you are staying in the cabins, expect no privacy lakeside. Everyone is looking for a spot to side, shade and lake access. Next time we go back, it will be during the week only. It is quiet at night. The 11pm curfew seems to be respected which is nice. If you enjoy fishing, someone caught a 7lb. bass. Renting the paddle boards was fun. If you plan to do the inflatables, do it Friday. Sat/Sun gets packed! There is a 30 min wait to get out to the inflatables due to COVID restrictions. Only 100 people at a time. They are open Fri/Sat/Sun. read more

PRO: We stayed two nights. It was chill. Location was great. We stayed in the Lake Mcswain "A" section (basic camping) No electricity, but has a water spout. Our camp site was steps away from the lake. Easy to bring your floats & kayaks down. A family got into a big fight one night. Lol! drunkards. CON: No wood fire allowed during the summer season. THERE ARE A MILLIONS of FLIES. The women's rest rooms were ok. The showers were ehh. Water was warm. Someone took a dump in one of them. read more

Camping Party Spot - don't expect peace and quiet Our group camped at Horseshoe Bend Campground at Lake McClure over labor day weekend. The reservation staff we dealt with initially were considerate and professional. We had a good time overall, and the campground was close to Yosemite which we visited one day. Our kids enjoyed the lake, being able to cool off in the evenings. Unfortunately, there was a large group at a nearby site who violated multiple campground rules (noise, vehicles, number of people) and when we tried to contact the park staff (after business hours) there was nobody available. Unfortunately we were travelling/off site during the days, so could not complain direct to the entry staff who were there during business hours only. This group was very loud in the evening starting from sunset until 2:00-3:00 AM, on both Saturday 8/31 and Sunday 9/1. Not only loud but inconsiderate, drunk, and rude. When one of our group asked them to please quiet down, they spewed profanity and continued to be loud. Sound carries a long way out there, and you could hear this group talking, playing music, and laughing clearly long into the early morning throughout the camp. We had activities planned early on Sunday, and a long drive home on Monday. It was very disturbing and we didn't get much sleep. To be fair, this seemed to be the ONLY group that was so rude. However it is on the Campground Management to at least make an effort to enforce the rules. We didn't see this at all. So fair warning for campers - don't come expecting to quietly enjoy nature, this seems to be a campground where noise and partying is tolerated. read more

My hubby and I love coming to McSwain! The early morning views are spectacular. If you listen and observe you can see a lot of wild life. This morning I saw a deer, osprey in it's nest and many birds (dove, pigeon, finch, owl, buzzard). Normally, we see and hear coyotes in the evening...maybe tonight. read more

There was a time, 3 years ago that I would have given McSwain a 5 star review, but not now. In fact 2 stars might be generous based on Merced Irrigation District Board members who have decided to let issues brought to their attention regarding water safety, speeding boats, open and wood fires, dogs running loose and the launching of boats in undesignated areas, which according to their own pamphlet and the Mariposa County Sheriff Department is illegal, fall on deaf ears. The people who fish at McSwain don't matter any more, the water park gets all the attention and support. Heck, if the rangers at McSwain would enforce the rules and regulations contained in the pamphlet and issue citations instead of turning a blind eye, the fire problems would stop, the speeding boat problems would stop, the litter and graffiti problems would stop..... START DOING THE JOB YOUR WERE HIRED TO DO FOLKS. And after bringing the fishing at McSwain to the level of Pardee, Comanche and Amador, they got political when confronted with an employee work related issue and things have gone down hill,FAST ever since. At this point in time it's not worth the day use fee to fish there, DONT INVEST IN AN ANNUAL PASS THIS YEAR. It's going to take a year or longer of not planting any other fish to rid, or at least thin the Browns out and make McSwain somewhat productive again. I say somewhat because Calaveras Trout Farm will not be planting there anymore and the Powers That Be are to frigging tight to purchase from the new Moccasin hatchery. But then again, they have their outrageously priced water park to keep happy and occupy their bank account. Good job people.......NOT. The water level at McSwain IS affected by McClure as McClure provides the water via the Merced River. And wakes from speeding boats are a constant issue. Yes there is a 10 mph speed limit on McSwain. The problem is that 10 mph speed limit isn't enforced anymore. As a matter of fact the 10mph buoys that used to be along the far side of the lake approx every 50 or 60 yards to remind people to not speed have been removed for whatever reason. read more

First off Kudos to the info@LakeMcClure email staff. Sooo helpful and prompt. Our first visit to Lake McSwain was a good one. The staff on site and the facilities were very nice. The heat tested us but we knew what we were headed into so we worked with it. Other than the 200 hundred extra visitors to our site (pesky flies), we really enjoyed the view, water, and quiet nights. If I were to give one word of advice to would be visitors it would be this: We took the weekend off to get away from what life is serving us right now. Pestier than the flies were the folks who made it audibly and visually clear of their political views and affiliations. Leave it at home folks. Just have a great time and be friendly. Lake McClure is a hidden gem in California. It's a hidden paradise that not too many people have heard of. I went wakeboarding and they have lots of wakeboarders at this lake. It's got wide open space and it's safe. The campground is nice and the marina lunch stop area is good. The lake has hot weather and balmy sun, but it feels good. The lake is spacious and hidden. It's not too busy with annoying people. It's really set out for wakeboarders. Fun times for a weekend in California passed Modesto. read more

They have to be more strict with the times they allow LOUD music. It's 10:30pm and people don't respect that others are asleep and people really don't wanna hear all that. Loud music should be in the afternoons and on. Besides that every staff member so far I've encountered had been very friendly and kind. The night security don't say anything to those with loud music. The water is freezing cold! Bathrooms are pretty close to camp ground. They only have two showers and they always have long lines. To get into those games in the water it's like $100 for two people all day. That's over priced in my opinion. read more

Lake McSwain is not affected by the amount of water in Lake McClure, so it is full. The lake is perfect for cruising, and there aren't the issue of wakes, as it is a 10 mph lake!!! The campsites are nice size and have great amenities. While there, we saw the Splash n Dash, and saw many kids and adults enjoying the fun. Prior to going, I was a little concerned that the apparatuses would be a bother for boaters...but it doesn't have any impact on boating. We didn't get a chance to get food at the grill, as they were very backed up. I'm glad they were busy, as that indicated to me that they must be pretty good. We are going back to enjoy the calm of being on the water at Lake McSwIn! read more

We have camped here for years and have always have a great time. Campgrounds are always kept up and the bathrooms are always clean. The lake is clear and beautiful with lots of kayaks even during this time of year. (Nov) We decided to rent a cabin for our 10th wedding anniversary. We were not disappointed. We stayed in cabin DC-1. It sleeps up to 8. It has a queen sized bed in a room, another room has two bunk beds and the loft area has to twin size mattresses. The couch is a hide a bed that pulls out for room for two. The cabin was clean with all the cooking utensils and place settings you need. Oh and regular sized refrigerator. However, there is no oven just two stove top electric burners. It has three A/C units and 3 wall heaters. The ceiling was very tall with a nice ceiling fan. There is no TV but who needs it with all the beauty around you here. All the cabins around us were full and almost all of the campgrounds too, but inside the cabin it was very quiet couldn't here the people across from us unless we were outside lol We look forward to many more memories of camping and cabin rentals. If you want random kids hitting your vehicle with balls, walking through your space or trash blowing into your space, loud music until 0200, this is your place. I am almost not sure I want to share this campground. McClure Point is my favorite campsite on Lake McClure. It is not as popular as Barret Cove because it is hidden back behind the Lake McSwain campground, and is a longer drive up the hill. I like it because it is up on a hill above the lake, and has nice views and cool breezes. This makes a big difference in the 100 degree weather around here. There are also lots of shade trees, and good access to the water. The sites are big enough, and the restrooms clean. I also get phone service with AT&T. There are both full hookup site, and tent sites. The only negative is the way they take reservations. They only reserve two weeks before, and there is no way to reserve online. Otherwise, I would have given 5 stars. read more

Last year we rented a pontton boat for a day out on the lake, everything went swell, so we decided to return again this year. Much has changed since last time. The $250.00 rental rate was still the same, but this time they asked for a $500.00 deposit. Usually most rental companies place a hold on your credit card, but Lake McClure actually wants the $500.00 to hold. Strange but whatever. So we get to the lake, get everything loaded on the boat, and are given quick overview on how to operate the boat. We are ready to take off, but the pontoon boat doesn't reverse...hmmm...did we listen to the directions correctly? Back to the marina office for help....turns out the reverse gear was broken. Ok, now what? Well they don't exactly have any available pontoon boats, but after 15 minutes we were given another one. I guess I should have been suspicious that all of a sudden they had an available boat after being told that they were all booked up. Anyway, we offload the other boat and get everything on to the new one. Take off, everything seems to be fine. Fast forward an hour and a half later. The pontoon boat dies...won't start, the horn is broken, and our cell phones don't have any service. We try desperately to flag down help, but other boaters think we are waving at them, and just wave back. After drifting aimlessly for two more hours, one boater actually stopped to help us out. He could not get the boat started either, so took my hubby back to the marina to get help. Hubby waits at the marina for 45 minutes until a service mechanic can arrive. Finally after another 45 minutes, the mechanic fixes the boat and we completely lose faith in the reliability of their rentals. We head back to the marina, to return their rental, only to be told that we are responsible for the entire day's rental fee. Of course this was ridiculous---who charges customers for a rental that they could not even use?!?!?!? All I can say is the place needs to re-think their policies, especially when it comes to renting faulty equipment. read more

We stayed at the Horseshoe Bend campground, Thursday, August 3, 2012. We picked a site in the A loop that was fairly level and had water and electrical service for our small motorhome. We self checked-in as we arrived after the ranger kiosk had closed. I noted the $3 dollar senior discount for the camping fees, but the $4 per dog charge didn't sink in...more on that later...so, $27 for a water and electric site. Not breaking the bank. We'd stayed the previous night at Yosemite and spent most of Thursday driving through the park and then getting lost or delayed in getting lost by road construction. So even though I'd driven less than 150 miles that day I was zoned. So we just setup, grilled some salmon burgers, feed the dogs, and read ourselves to sleep. When we arrived Thursday evening, we were only the second set of campers in the loop. On awakening Friday morning, we found we'd been joined by a few others. We showered in the shower facility a few steps from our site. The water was free, warm enough, and had good pressure. The fixtures were in variable condition and cleanliness...Jane had a clogged toilet on her side, a faulty showerhead, and I had a couple of urinals that were overflowing on my side. I might have gone to 4 stars if it weren't for the condition of the restrooms. Freshly spiffed, we took our two dogs for a nice long walk. We hiked to an overlook above the lake and took some lovely pictures. The dogs enjoyed exploring new sights and smells and so did we. Back to camp to get set for the road. As I was buttoning up a ranger stopped by...remember that $4 per dog charge? I helloed him and told him we'd enjoyed our stay. He saw the dogs in the motorhome and let me know in a friendly way that I should have paid for them. And with a smile wished me a good day and a safe trip home. We headed to the RV dump to empty our tanks...clean, with easy access...and were on the road home with a smile on our faces and a song in our hearts! read more

Lake McClure is best visited in October. The weather is cooler, the water is still warm, and the camping population is down to almost nothing. The marina is closed, but there's a sign on the door with numbers to call if you need gasoline. If you don't mind the dry area and want to have the lake to yourself try October. read more

I like to go swimming at Lake McClure. Lake McSwain's water is super cold. I like McSwain's campsites better. And it has a store, McClure doesn't. If I could switch the lakes then I would be happy! I have to say McClure is a little boring. McSwain has a lot more stuff to do, like playgrounds and trails. Overall I like both, I would prefer to go to McSwain because of the store, but McClure's water is warmer. read more

This review is for the Horseshoe Bend campground. We stayed at Horseshoe bend this past weekend for 2 nights. The campground was pretty empty, maybe 4 other groups of people there total. The staff was friendly but not very helpful. The rangers gave conflicting information about the nearsest place to get ice, etc. The spots themselves are decent. A bit small but there are some gorgeous oak trees and a few sites have vies of the lake. The positives: the lake was pretty, covered picnic areas (for more shade), clean bathrooms with running water. The negatives: there is some sort of trailer park that backs up to the park. This park seems to be filled with loud, rowdy drunk people. Noisy at night. Night two some local kids came to play in the lake and were drunk, loud and yelling profanity late into the night (2 am). No sleep for me, luckily my toddler and 5 year old slept through it. Fishing not great. None one bite in 2 days. Bottom line is I would NOT go back. Still searching for the perfect late. read more

We booked the weekend at McSwain to celebrate our daughters 17th bday. The campgrounds are huge! At each "site" there are shade towers, a BBQ pit, a fire pit and a raised food storage tower. Water spickets are nearby. This is a great, safe place for kids to play and the bathrooms are greatly maintained/very clean! Showers are clean as well. The park rangers are friendly, really nice and very helpful. We frequent this campground because we always have a great time. Sometimes rude idiots will come to camp, but the Rangers are always on top of taking care of the overly rowdy. Great for families! We just got home right now and are planning our next camping trip there :) read more

We lucked out and booked a great spot to camp at lake McSwain. Clean camp spot and restrooms! They even have soap and paper towels. We enjoyed fishing and walking around the area. I think it must get really busy in the summer though as there are a lot of camping spots and nice day use areas with outdoor kitchens and a horse shoe area. I booked this camp site for labor weekend. Although the camp site itself was decent, there was no where to swim. You can't put down stakes because right below the dirt is cement. I came with the impression that there was a swimming area here (on their map) to find out it is dried out and nowhere to swim. The only way to get into the water is to either come with a boat or go to McSwain where it was packed and hard to find a spot. You can't set up near the water because its all rocks and a slope. They also no longer have boat or jetski rentals anymore. The park ranger told us to go swim at a spot that had an electric line into the water and cannot swim within 100 feet. People are not respectful of quiet hours, people were up at past 4 am either screaming, flashing lights or playing music. The mens showers had feces in each shower. Toilets are not stable. We ended up leaving a day earlier than planned. Overall, it was horrible experience to say the least. Would not recommend coming here unless you plan on only camping at your site or bring a boat/jet skis/cannoning or to fish. The reviews here are very deceiving as well. read more

Spent a weekend camping at Lake McClure, what a big, big mistake. First off it was blazing hot and you are perched on top of a mountain looking down at the beautiful blue looking lake, which for unforeseen reasons you will only look at the water, not be able to go down and go swimming. Oh yeah, they have this ready made lagoons which the water is to stagnated it's green and has no fresh water going into it. It's like swimming in a frog pond, no way. Will never go back to this place EVER! No place to drop off or get rid of your garbage. Will stay closer to home at Modesto Reservoir, or out at Woodward with the sand fleas would be better. At least I can walk off into water from my campsite. read more

The Lake McSwain e-loop campsite was nice with a view of the lake. Our site had nice shade. However, the bathrooms were horrible. Constant water on the floors throughout the bathroom and it wasn't due to people swimming and using the bathroom. I know for sure two toilets leaked when you flushed. One time a lady said the floors were wet because they sprayed sanitizer and mopped. However, that wasn't the entire reason the floors were wet throughout the day. They did have plumbing and drainage issues. I would not go back just because of the bathrooms. We also had a lot flies! They were a big annoyance. The weekend days had a few problem campers with loud gangsta and inappropriate language. The rangers were on top of it though and were helpful. I would like to see them enforce dogs being on a leash. One dog kept coming over onto our site to our propane fire pit and to our food. read more

Lake McClure used to be our go to lake. This week, we camped Sun and returned home today. We were very disappointed in a few things: 1) the Marina!!! What more is there to say. A new owner who has no clue how to run a business. Be forewarned, it is only open Thurs thru Sunday. Any other day, you have to pull your boat out for gas and go to local Don Pedro market for any goodies! Craziness!!! 2) the campground faucets leak constantly, wasting water and flooding the bathrooms. 3) the facilities aren't maintained... we stayed in J Loop for 2 days with no Paper towels, 2 toilets not working. We will go to Don Pedro or New Melones from now on. read more

This was our first stay at the Lake McSwain campgrounds. We really enjoyed ourselves and the campgrounds left me largely impressed. The campsites are a nice size. Some are large enough to accommodate 2 tents and 2 vehicles! Many of the tent sites are right near the water (but still far enough away to be safe if you have little kids with you). The swimming area is perfect. There is plenty of swimming space roped off and there is enough shallow area for little ones to play, but also a deeper end for adults to wade out to. Many people take advantage of the fishing, but we didn't try on this trip. I appreciated the water spigots that were located within a close walk to each camp site. We arrived on a Friday, which may have been bad timing... The people there that night were really rowdy and loud despite the designated quiet times. The rangers came through several times and didn't seem to put a stop to it. (I don't know if they stopped and talked to any of these groups. All I can say is that the noise continued until 3 or 4 in the morning.) Saturday was much quieter. On Sunday most of the campers packed up and moved out. We stayed until Monday. It was on Sunday night and Monday that we experienced some of the problems referred to in other posts. Once everyone left, our site was attacked by flies. They were horrible and guess who didn't have a fly swatter... We also saw the roaches referred to in another post. A large one was just hanging out outside the bathroom and then I walked into a nest of small ones hiding in a rock outcropping on Sunday night. We had heard the bats every night, but on Sunday night we SAW them! They were flying all over the place directly above us while we were sitting outside the tents. Keep in mind that the adults in our group stayed up until about midnight quietly chatting outside our tents every night we were there, but Sunday night is the only night we experienced this. I really think all the critters and creepy crawlies come out of hiding when the majority of the sites are open. Another negative was the restroom showers. Yes, there are showers, but no, I would not call them warm. My 3 year old son screamed like he was dying every time I put him in the shower and so did many other little kids that were being bathed while we were there. As an adult I could handle the less than room temperature shower, but for little ones it sucks. Also, the showers shoot out of the shower space and into the little changing area right next to it. So you have to be really careful what you leave out there, because it can get soaked, and then you have to get dressed in a puddle of dirty water. Just fyi, if your towel falls in that puddle, you'll find out just how dirty that water is. There is no drain outside the shower, so the water pools until there is enough of it and then it forms a river that runs outside the bathroom and down the hill. One more thing on the bathrooms... on Friday and Saturday nights, there is a wait for the showers. People are lines for the showers between 6 and 9 p.m. Most people are cool about waiting, because a lot of these people are parents with little kids; but, some people, especially the single women, are flat-out b#@&*es because they have to wait their turn. If you have a problem with waiting for a shower, I suggest you plan to shower earlier or later than the times I've listed. Despite the bathroom and creature issues, we really had a great time. The rangers we talked to were super nice and helpful when we had questions. The bathrooms are kept clean, but that doesn't mean it's never dirty in between cleanings. It just depends on what kind of people are staying at the time. So most of our experience was good, but there are a few negatives. read more

Lake McClure is a pretty lake. But it is just another man made mud hole. If you fish from the shore or sit in a boat, fine. Or if all you want is to sit at your camp site, fine too. Otherwise, hiking is hard, the hills are steep, no real trails, (should be lots of rattlesnakes) out there. The shoreline is rocky with jagged rocks. While the dogs had fun, there is no swim area that we found, or saw listed anywhere. So unless you launch a boat and plan to stay on it, don't bother looking there for a fun filled day with the kids. McSwain has better options for a family, tho neither are anyplace I plan to return to. We actually had a better time finding spots along the river. read more

On June 23, 2014 I made an online reservation for a Lake McClure campsite in the amount of $68. We were planning to stay July 18th-20th. However, on July 10th I called the reservation line to reschedule our trip to July 25th-27th. At this time I spoke with one of your male employees, he explained there would be a $10 charge to reschedule, at which I agreed. He assured me that everything was taken care of. When we arrived at the front gate of Lake McClure on July 25th, I tried to check my family in with a male employee (at the time I did not know it was Mr. V, until I found the confirmation email from him later on). I handed him my reservation letter, he then told us that he did not have us in the system for July 25th-27th, and that we were supposed to be here last weekend, July 18th-20th. I then explained that I had called to reschedule and was charged the $10. Mr. V then started to insult me, in front of my child. He said, "I don't know how to say this without sounding rude, but why didn't you bring proof that you paid the $10 reschedule fee because you do not have a reservation this weekend, and I don't know what else to tell you." Every question I asked this employee, he answered me with another question, "why didn't you do this, why didn't you do that?" At this point, I tried to bring up the confirmation that was in my email account, but I did not have internet service. I asked Mr. V if I could use either their WIFI, or use a computer, he laughed and said no, that I should have brought it with me. I then asked what should we do, and he said he did not know, staring blankly at us. Not only did this employee continue to insult my integrity, he did nothing to try and help me and my family. He finally gave us an option to pay for one night and told us to go to the main office in the morning to speak with a lady there about our reservation issue. The next morning my husband went to the office where he paid for yet another night. The woman in the office was unable to verify that I had paid previously for this campsite. She told my husband that if I could find the documents need, she would reimburse us. On our last day, July 27th, I was able to find the information needed on my phone and went back to the office, to speak with the same employee. I showed her the rescheduled confirmation with the new dates, she then told me I would need to bring her the other receipts in order to give me a refund. However, when we were charged again for our stay, their receipt machine was not printing so we did not have this to show for. She said we could call the Manager the next day because they do not keep copies of receipts. I asked her if the front gate had copies of receipts and she told me she did not know. When I drove back to the gate, I asked if he was Mr. V. He then said, "Maybe." I then told him he was who I spoke with over the phone to reschedule my vacation dates, he then said "I thought you said his name was Jose?" and he started laughing at me again. This employee obviously took my time and money as a joke. So not only was I insulted, I was humiliated by this employee. After spending $136, driving to and from our campsite in McClure to the offices at McSwain I was never once treated with any respect nor were there any employees willing to help me. I was sent in circles and insulted by Mr. V on numerous occasions. Also, not only did he insult me, he insulted our friends at the gate that came an hour after us. Slamming my name to them how I did not pay for the campsite to begin with. He kept them at the gate explaining to them how we did not have a reservation this weekend and we were not in the system. On Monday July 28th, the Manager called to reimburse me the $68. She explained to me that it was a system error, which her employees knew about. My question is, why did these two employees make this computer error my fault? I am the paying customer, and I was accused of making these errors because I did not bring proof at the gate. Even if I was to bring proof, I was still not in the system assigned to a campsite. We drove over three hours to camp here, we were lucky there were still sites available. I understand there are computer issues with every company from time to time, however to have your Manager confess to me that she and her employees know this is an issue they have been having, yet not explain it me to in a professional matter when I had arrived at their facility, and then be told by Mr. V that it was my fault, and he did not know how to help me is just unacceptable. I feel I did more work to try and figure out the situation then the employees did. I hope in the future this doesn't happen to another family because our vacation was ruined. read more
