What a treat to get just an hour out from Dallas and be able to enjoy a crisp lake, minimal crowds, blue skies, plenty of trees, and around five miles of trails! The state park had multiple clean restroom facilities with water fountains and places to fill bottles. I enjoyed a 14 mile trail run, looping each trail several times. Multiple trails offer lakefront views. The park is open early (6 AM) all the way til 10 PM with self-pay options for entering. At just $5 to enter, it's a real bargain to get outside and get your dose of nature in. There were minimal pests (bugs) throughout the park (unlike my last trip to Broken Bow!), and I must have seen at least 20 deer in the 3ish hour period I was there. It's not Colorado or anything, but for being so close to Dallas it's a perfect retreat. The park staff was very friendly, along with all the locals I encountered on the trails! read more

Came here to visit family and enjoy the state park. There are numerous camp sites with about 30 full hookups. Most are easy access, and the parking pads are spacious and easy to park in. They look to have a picnic table and a fire pit. There are some good walking trails, and the fishing is supposed to be good. Some trophy sized bass have been taken from this lake. The staff was helpful and very informed. They have a full boat ramp and a cleaning station. The showers need to be updated in the mens room as they do not drain properly. A fishing pier would be a nice addition as unless you have a boat, you have to fish from shore, and there are not many spots to do so. It is a really nice state park is you are near Dallas. read more

Excellent park for camping, water activities, and outdoor exploration. The Ranger gave us a demo about animals and their habitats and characteristics. She was awesome! They have kayak rentals by the boat dock and lots of parking. The swim area was a little sandy, and it was roped off. Nice hiking with well marked paths that were pretty flat and also bike friendly. The sites are very versatile from pull through to concrete waters edge. It's a good park for families, groups, or solo travelers. My GPS took me through a tiny country back road, it looks a little sketchy but it ended up in the park. Tip: Make sure you grab an amazing margarita in town if you go for some food at Roth's Seafood! read more

My sister and I visited from Dallas for a day, and strolling through the many trails, we saw so much wildlife (deer, songbirds, cormorants, vultures, and more) I was enthralled. Many of the people we saw on trails also carried enormous cameras. It was the middle of winter, so the scenery wasn't stellar, and the water was unimaginably frigid, but we still had a great time getting steps in and exploring. Admission is $5 per adult (13+ yrs). Plenty of parking available. Family friendly. read more

Was in a driving mood and stopped here to check it out sense I hear it's a great spot to fish. It's a decent size lake. Only a hour away from Dallas. So not too too far a drive. It has trails in it, but if you take one be sure to use a map as they all run together. You can easily get lost. The ramp for boats is perfect for truck with the grooves in the ground. It has great traction. The size is small for camping and swimming but it's not overly crowded. There is a place to shower. There is a kayak rental tho I was scared the kayaks would kill me so I didn't get on one. But overall decent place to visit. read more

Lake Tawakoni State Park has a lot of great reviews and I see why! Just east of Dallas, it's very accesible for a weekend getaway. Good amount of camping lots and great spot for fishing on the lake. Saw a beaver, deer, and tons of birds. Good chance to get out in nature! read more

My wife and I decided to get out of Dallas for a few hours recently and since we both enjoy camping decided to check out LTSP. It's super easy to get to from our neighborhood. Basically Buckner to US 80 to Wills Point. Little more than an hour each way. Our initial contact was with the Park Ranger at the gate. She was super friendly and helpful. And it turned out to be a beautiful fall afternoon. This seems to be one of the smaller state parks. But, even though the camping area was pretty full, it never felt crowded Plenty of room to wander and roam and the few folks we met on the hiking trails were friendly and pleasant About the trails: the two we hiked were easy and well marked. We really appreciated the small placards along the way that highlighted various plants, etc. The terrain was just diverse enough to feel like we had gotten some exercise without being all tuckered out afterward. We didn't need to check out the restrooms except at the main entrance which were neat and clean. If you want to fish you won't need a license if you do so from the bank or pier and there is a fish cleaning station nearby. There is plenty of camping spaces and the park is very RV friendly. The ranger said the park fills up on weekends but you can reserve a site online or by phone All in all LTSP is a great place to get away from city life for a few hours or a few days. You can hike, boat, fish or just snooze under the trees. Daily use fee is $5 per person per day. But if you get the annual pass for $70 you get free entry into any Texas State Park for you and your guests which makes it a great deal for families. It also entitles you to other discounts. And you can purchase it online. Seniors get a discount but each person has to have his/her own card. read more

It's a small park but worth the weekend. Pros: small and intimate, easy trails for young children, frequent deer sightings, lots of wildlife sightings on trails (including spiders, so be safe lol), parks beach area and trails are clean, good fishing spots, showers are hot w/ good pressure, close to DFW area Cons: people suck so they tear up the bathrooms and they weren't cleaned all weekend, again people suck and they leave tackle (fishing line, hooks, bait fish) just anywhere, the camping spots aren't as private as some other parks Overall we've been here before and would come back again. Its an hour away but feels like you're in the middle of nowhere. Even though the park isn't very big it has a lot to do, plus Lake Tawakoni is one of our fave lakes :) read more

Decided to take the family and dogs here for an afternoon of relaxation and hiking. Very organized staff at entry and no overcrowding once you got in. We set up at a picnic table in the shade and enjoyed the breeze. My kids have actually gone back and hiked some more times. Would definitely go back and camp. read more

A really beautiful park that Dallasites/Shreveportians should check out. There is a smaller lake and a larger one, both of which are picturesque. This continues on the hiking trails which traces the peninsula inside the park. read more

This is a great place to relax on the lake. This State Park is very quiet and has many outdoor activities like fishing, hiking, camping, cooking, biking and playing outside. They have many hook ups for RVs, some are full hook ups and some are partial hook ups. Water, electric at the partial hook up and waste disposal at the full hook ups. We just did 2 winter nights at the park. Very nice place to get away and enjoy the outdoors. It's VERY quiet here too :) read more

It's a very quiet but fun place. There's a lot of trees to keep the shade. The people who come here are very nice & friendly. I have been to several state parks in Texas, and this one is not my favorite, but it's good for a short drive away from the metroplex. The campsites are nice and well-maintained. The park staff are helpful and friendly. The nature trails are excellent for kids to bike/walk. They aren't paved, but still easy to ride. The signage on the nature trails could definitely be better. We fished at the kids' fish pond (which had supposedly been recently stocked) with the suggested bait, and we didn't even get a nibble. The swim beach was nice and sandy. The restrooms in the tent camping loop were less than ideal. The bathhouse was four individual restrooms with the sink, shower, and toilet. That's great, except that if it's a busy shower time, no toilets are available. Also, the shower water ran all over the whole bathroom, which made a muddy mess all over the floor. We would go back, definitely, especially with kids that love to bike and play in the sand! read more
