Whenever I'm in Richmond I always get a latte and couple pounds of coffee to take home. I have worked for a big chain coffee shop for over a decade so I do know a little about what makes and excellent latte. After traveling all over the East coast and parts of Europe drinking coffee at local shops I have found that Lamplighter Coffee Roasters is hands down my favorite coffee shop in the world. The food is also top notch and the baristas are friendly. If you live in Richmond you need to drink Lamplighter coffee. Drink it for people like me that live far away and can't make it there regular coffee shop. Tasty coffee, delicious food, and friendly staff! Every dish I've tried here has been yummy: most notable the individual vegetarian quiches, the TLT&A sandwich (amazing!), and the veggie-friendly hot breakfast specials that change daily. Space is a bit tight inside, but part of the outdoor area is now screened-in and has a heater in winter. Nice vibe inside and out. Good for lunch with a friend or a private study session. Watch what you put into the GPS- mine tried to take me to their roasting works off of North Boulevard next to the strip joint. Once I got there, I enjoyed the coffee (a basic mocha latte) and the general vibe of the place. The food looks good, although I didn't eat. Very hipster vibe, but friendly, not exclusionary. I felt totally welcome despite being a suburban dad type. Only about ten tables inside, some seating four each and some more like two seaters. More seating oustide, but that's tough in July. There are ceiling fans, though, so fine when it's 85 or lower outside. More of a sit and talk place than a sit and work place- the music is loud and mostly rock, a bit distracting if you're alone. Fine if you are talking with friends. I can imagine coming back if I'm in the area again, and will definitely try the food. read more

By far, I think Lamplighter is the best coffee I had in the Richmond area.. EVER. The food is amazing, and the location is awesome! But in the last two times I came with my sister and my friends, I certainly did not feel that welcoming vibe I had the first time I came here. One of the times I came, I asked if I could have my latte in a carafe (because the carafe is so cool! Honestly, I order the largest size latte for the purpose of getting a carafe. When my order came, a barista gave me my drink in a to-go cup.... and I saw on the shelf that there were 4 carafes. I kindly asked the barista for a carafe in hopes he would be okay with it... but I was so wrong. Instead, he gave me terrible attitude, telling me to keep that cup because he would rather give the carafe to someone else. Keep in mind, I always give $2 tip when I ordered here. WHAT JUST HAPPENED. Please treat everyone equally, its not fair that we want to be regulars but feel like wasps in a bee hive. read more

Place is ok. Small inside. No air conditioning except small little unit at front where you place your order. Really hot even with ceiling fans. Small selection of hot and iced beverages. Outside picnic tables are where the majority of people find a place to sit. read more

Came here on a rainy day to eat lunch with my sister and to be honest, I was disappointed in my hot chocolate order. It tasted watered down than a chocolate taste. I also ordered a sandwich to go with my meal. I forgot the name of it (my bad) but it looks and tasted exactly like a BLT type of sandwich that came with devil eggs on the side. The prices for their sandwiches were a decent price around $7-$8, but i felt like i could have made this at home because it did not taste anything special? besides their hot sriracha or mustard sauce. seats are also very limited and because it was raining outside, everyone was inside and there were only around 6 tables inside. Great hipster spot off of Cary st! The inside spots are a bit small but I did enjoy the I closed porch. In the winter though this place might be a bit hard to eat at. A ton of great options for breakfast and the egg and maple siracha sausage was good but not great. I've been here twice now, and surprisingly have never gotten the coffee! But, I have tried the food, and it's been pretty darn good. Try one of their bagels with "the works" - your choice of cream cheese or hummus topped with tomatoes, capers, red onions, and fresh cracked black pepper. So simple, yet so good! I'm usually a whole wheat bagel kind of person, but couldn't resist trying their everything bagel. It was a great choice. The location is a bit off the beaten path, so don't be worried if it seems like you're going down a random side street to get there (it's because you really *are* going down a random side street, and it really is there - promise!). read more

Cold pressed ice coffee = heavenly Yeah... my tips says it all. I'm OBSESSED with the cold press coffee. LOVE it. Yum. I wish this place was in my office building so I could have it everyday.... but for now, I will have to settle for just a weekend treat. Oh, and I had a sandwich from here that was delicious. It had flavorful hummus and fresh veggies on a pumpernickle bagel (!) Yum! Bit of a long line for coffee (and I originally thought I was going to a Crossroads coffee and ice cream place) but overall decent experience. All I wanted was coffee at the time, so it worked out. Although I do always want ice cream as well.... Tucked in a cute neighborhood by VCU and close to downtown Richmond, it's a very nice place to walk around while you enjoy your coffee/snacks. This cute little hipster coffee spot is just presh! First off, it has a really chill vibe to the place and I just wanted to relax. I appreciated their menu option as everything sounded delicious. I ordered the chai tea latte and it had an extra kick of spice. Now, I'm a sucker for lox so I simply got that. I say it was okay. The salmon was not as fresh as I was hoping it to be but then again, I am a fish snob at times (lived in Japan and also in California for a bit...) all in all though the bagel itself was delicious and that tasted fresh out of the oven! I'm new to Richmond and always like to get a feel for a place by exploring it's coffee shops. Lamplighter had good reviews and I decided to try it out. They have three locations in the city but I choose the Addison St. location, their first. Parking on the street was easy to find though they also have spots out front. The vibe is very hipster but not overwhelmingly so, and is very warm and welcoming. Lost of seating outside allow for enjoying a nice day, though there's only a few tables inside if the weather's bad. Cool art to gaze at indoors. I'm generally a coffee fanatic though today opted for a chai latte instead, another favorite of mine. I must say, the drink was delicious, a blend of their vanilla and honey ginger chai's with nice hints of each yet neither being overwhelming. I've heard great reviews of their coffee and can't wait to return to try it out. The food looked delicious as well and is all reasonably priced for an independent coffee shop. Would definitely recommend stopping by if you're looking for a quick coffee, to hang with a friend, or get work done! read more

If you wanna spend an eternity to get your coffee this is your spot, otherwise I'd stick to my French press at home or go elsewhere where they actually know how to give prompt and reputable service. Tucked away in a really pretty residential area in the fan. Amazing coffee and their food is so great. I got the artichoke sandwich and my only mistake was not ordering two. So many vegan options and all of the ingredients are incredible quality. Really easy if your busy and just need to pick up something quick. Customer service was great. This is an excellent coffee shop - menu is unique and delicious (I got the egg maple sausage bagel - very well done, not soggy as some egg bagels become). I'm not super savvy with coffee but the cold brew I got (in December....thank you to the 80 degree weather) was strong but not bitter. Ultimately the atmosphere is great for studying or hanging out and chatting with friends and is good for small or large groups (especially when the weather is nice). It is a little messy/dirty, but that wouldn't stop me from going back. read more

It's probably a good thing I live 4 hours away, because I would be here on the daily. The bagel with avocado, greens, cream cheese, and tomato was perfect. The price was right and my taste buds did a happy dance. The Thai coffee was not my favorite and I would never get it again. I decided to veer away from my usual and I regretted it with my first sip. Holy sugar. The caffeine and sugar combo had me jittery the rest of the day, but I knew there was the possibility when I ordered something out of my comfort zone. Aside from the food and drinks, my favorite part of lamplighter was the ambiance and general vibe of the coffee shop. My 2 year old who is usually a nightmare to take in public and a hassle to sit in a seat was having a blast on the chalk wall. I spent the better part of the year hanging out in RVA, and stumbled upon Lamplighter thanks to Yelp. I'll keep it brief... it's freaking awesome I am a carnivore in every sense of the word, but the soy chorizo breakfast sandwich is great. Not quite as good as the real thing, but as good as you can expect out of such a thing. The 17 1/2, apple bottom, and caballero were my go to sandwiches, and after eating and having my coffee here 2-3 times a week for 6 months, I was never disappointed. I am from Austin, TX, and the level of hipster that exists at Lamplighter is the high water mark for my life experience... everyone looks like a Lumineer.... BUT.. go here. Now. I was looking for a good breakfast "Sammies" spot. I found my fix. It is a laid back spot that I seen before but never knew what they were about until I found it on yelp. I tried it for myself and WOW! This will definitely be my spot for breakfast sandwiches. I started this go around with the quilted breakfast sandwich. It is a simple sandwich of bacon, egg and cheese. You can't go wrong with that. The bread, in my opinion, is the most important ingredient of a good breakfast sandwich. It was AWESOME! This is your typical hipster like coffee place. Man-buns. Non-designer crop tops. Lumberjack beards. But that's what gave this place such a greatvibe! The staff was super cordial and knew what to genuinely recommend. I got the matcha coffee and my wife got a normal dark roast. They came in what I expect a coffee place to have, me awesome in-house mugs! The owners and staff are nice- and I mean it. They work hard and it shows, and they don't treat people like quick money. In comparison to other coffee shops in Richmond, this is by far the best one, hands down, there is no comparison. Crossroads is great too, but the food at Lamplighter surpasses- home made whoopie pies, generous portions, creative specials, fresh, fresh, fresh, and not overpriced. The coffee is again, hands down, the best local brew in town. I have a bag in my freezer right now. Buy a lb. of beans and get a free 12 oz hot to go cup with the good condiments. And they brew more than one roast per day, unlike Ellwood's Coffee where there is no choice but regular or decaf. Again, the food surpasses. The menu is plentiful and very vegan/veggie friendly. House made sauces and dressings, sides, soups, and you'll be full when you're done with your meal. They just added a patio enclosure, but the place is really popular. Great iced Thai coffee! The rest of my order is pending now, but so far, the staff are awesome and it's got a nice eclectic vibe. Dog-friendly as well, at least the patio area is anyway. Plus, they're open today (Labor Day) when most of the others are closed. They also have some beautiful pottery mugs, whole bean coffees, and some assorted coffee supplies for sale.
