We had a good experience renting a Jeep on Lanai from Jim. He kept good communication even prior to our arrival, as the island did have some storm damage. Thankfully when it was time for our day trip, all of the sites were fully accessible. We packed in a full day visiting Garden of the Gods, Shipwreck Beach, Lanai Cat Sanctuary, Hulopoe Bay and hiking the Pu'upehe Trail. We started with breakfast at Blue Ginger and later visited the 50s themed diner in the new bowling center for afternoon ice cream. The Jeep was quite new, very clean, with CarPlay, and everything was in good working order. I highly recommend downloading offline maps for navigating Lanai, as there is barely a bar of cell service, even in town. We never actually had to use 4WD for the Jeep, but the height clearance sure did help us on some of the rough dirt roads to some of the sites (places you'd never want to take a regular car). Jim gave us a thorough explanation and tips for visiting the sites when we arrived on the morning shuttle to pickup the Jeep (text the shuttle company ahead of time to reserve your spot at the ferry harbor). There was a laminated map inside the Jeep for us to take with us for the day. Process was smooth. Would rent from Cheap Jeeps again if visiting Lanai. Mahalo! read more

We made a last minute decision to visit Lanai and needed a Jeep to get around. Gail was super helpful in getting us a reservation (as we were literally on the ferry from Maui) and the pickup/drop-off process were smooth and relaxed. The Jeep was able to handle all the dirt paths in Lanai with ease, and it was so fun to drive around. You have to realize the island is very small and isolated, so the rental car options are limited. We took a ferry from Maui to Lanai and took a shuttle from the dock to Lanai City to pick up the jeep. This is one of only two places in town-- other than a Budget Rent-a-Car-- where you can rent Jeeps in Lanai. Contrary to the name, it's actually the more expensive of the two locations. They're not very professional here, but it may just be a very different kind of culture. Their website is simple, almost too simple. You can't really do anything on it. I made a call and didn't hear back for hours. When I finally did hear from them, I'd already given up and placed my rental with Budget for about $40 cheaper. I've been to over 100 countries and these guys provided some of the best service I've ever experienced. First off, the Jeep was great- no problems, very few restrictions (dry season)- easy pickup and drop off. Best of all, Jim ended up becoming my de facto concierge helping me with a variety screwups on my end. We decided last minute to drive around island on our own. The steep price at Dollar--the only national car rental brand on island--was just too much. Happy to have heard about Lanai Cheap Jeeps! They didn't have any Jeeps available for same day rental--up to 6:00 PM and done. They did have a Subaru Crosstrek that was out for errands but available for rental. We made the reservation with credit card but payment is ultimately cash only and upfront. They drove to us which was nice and car was in great shape! Paperwork is on the light side so it's easy to get you on the road from the road. Driver gave us a map and pointed out where we could drive and couldn't drive because of overnight rain. One day we'll do the full Munro Trail and Garden of the Gods! We drove all over the island and it was great! All we had to do before 6:00 PM was top off the tank, park where they met us, and leave keys for the driver, who promptly arrived to claim the car. Super convenient car rental service and we were glad to support another local business! read more

We rented a jeep from them for one day on Lanai. I chose them over the competitors because they offered a cheaper rate and also a kama'aina (local) discount. I now wish that I had gone with a more reputable company even if the upfront cost quoted would have been more. This "company" is extremely unprofessional. I was unable to reach them via phone, but I made the reservation over email. I asked for a rate to rent from noon on Tuesday to noon on Wednesday and was quoted $109. When I arrived to pick up the jeep, they asked me what time I wanted to return it and I said I'd like to return it around 3-4 pm as that would be right before my flight. They said that was fine and just to leave it at the airport parking with the keys in the car. They never stated there would be an additional fee over what was quoted. There was no appropriate paperwork to sign for the rental. The jeep itself ran fine although it does have a check engine light/ tire pressure warning that comes on that they tell you to ignore.. We returned the jeep at the time we agreed on and made sure to clean it. When I got home , I realized they had charged me for $175.15 . I sent an email inquiring why it was over the amount charged, and asking for a receipt. The following emails from them were extremely unprofessional. They confused me with a different client who had rented it over the weekend for over 2 days. They accused me of spilling something in the back seat that they claimed I would be "liable for" , though we know that we did not do anything of the sort. They are extremely unpleasant to deal with and I recommend staying away and using another company that has a good reputation for honest dealing and professionalism. read more

I will preface this by saying I have traveled to several of the Hawaiian islands on short trips and have lots of experience with car and jeep rentals here. This was also my second trip to Lanai and I had previously used Dollar Rentals without issue. My girlfriend and I were picked up at the airport. The jeep was clean. We were provided a road map, a complimentary cooler, and some rags to clean the red dirt off. My praise stops here. This has been my worst vehicle rental experience in Hawaii. I was not given a rental agreement or a receipt. I was informed that the Jeep had a "couple of lights that might come on" to include the check engine and TPMS... but that I could ignore them. Prior to the trip I was quoted for a rate and further confirmed the drop-off time with the staff upon pickup. The vacation went without issue and I returned the Jeep to the drop-off point at precisely the time we agreed upon. We were billed for a rate that made no sense to me. Upon sending an email to ask about the discrepancy, I was returned an extremely unprofessional and discourteous reply stating that the price was adjusted based on my return time and then he immediately went on the offensive saying that I was liable for some interior damages. Given the absence of a rental agreement, I find it nothing more than a threat-tactic into staying quiet about the higher bill. In conclusion, any perceived savings by their posted rates are about as good as the company's word... In the future I would use Dollar Rentals, where you can expect the same professional service and standard operating procedures as any mainland rental location. read more

Consumer alert. Do not rent aJeep if you do not need a Jeep. We were restricted to only the paved roads which means you can go to the beach and the cat sanctuary. The 4 places we wanted to see were off limits we walked several of the dirt roads and they were easily passable in a Jeep. We put on very few miles yet it cost 48.00 to fill it with gas. So obviously the gauge was off. Also disconcerting to have 3 idiot lights on at all times. There are better ways to go if you visit Lanai. read more

We reserved a Jeep for our day trip but it got damaged the week before we arrived (and of course, fixing everything takes longer on an island because special parts arrive by boat!) So we swapped out for a Subaru AWD, which was perfectly suitable. We were able to drive all over including on the sand trail out to Shipwreck with no problem. I am STILL seething with anger over a week later at their lack of professionalism and for almost ruining our vacation. A little history. As avid animal lovers, my partner and I have been dreaming of visiting Lanai Cat Sanctuary ever since we knew of its existence. So...after many attempts at both getting off work at the same time for ONE weekend, we finally secured the last weekend in April. We planned on staying in Maui because it's cheaper, then spending an entire day on Lanai with the cats. We rented AirBnB, hotel, car for Maui, and a Jeep for Lanai months in advance for this sole purpose. Fast-forward. Less than 12 hours before we are scheduled to pick up our Jeep on Lanai, they call me to inform me that there was a problem with my reservation. First, they called and left a message (I don't answer unknown numbers). After I listened to the message, on which they stated there was an "incident" with my reservation, I immediately called back. A lady answered, I wish I remembered her name. I was in a store with music playing in the back and after I identified who I was, she proceeded to ask me if I was at a party. Um, excuse me? You call me about my reservation being cancelled and the first thing you ask me is, "Are you at a party?" Not that I needed to explain myself, but I politely informed her that I was in a store. She laughed and then went on to tell me that she was sorry and that the vehicle that was reserved for me was in an accident and they had no vehicle for me. LESS THAN 12 HOURS BEFORE I WAS SCHEDULED TO PICK IT UP. She offered me no solution or compensation. All she did was tell me to call Dollar Rental to see if they had any vehicles available. If it were me, THEY should've called Dollar Rental themselves and reserved me a replacement vehicle for which I would've been happy to pay the difference. Second, for real? They have ZERO vehicles for them to replace mine with? This is just bad business, bad practice, and unprofessionalism at its finest. The funny thing is, they called me sometime after 8pm (I was scheduled to pick up the Jeep at 7am the next morning). Their business closed at 5pm. So there were 3 hours that a supposed vehicle that was in an accident was just sitting there. I wish I had written this review right after the fact, I know I would've had more things to say. But I suppose this will have to suffice. I guess they think since they are only one of two rental cars on the island of Lanai they can get away with crap like this. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE!!!! BEWARE!!!! HAVE A BACKUP PLAN IF YOU DO!!! read more

We had a fantastic experience with Cheap Jeeps. When renting a car on Lanai it's important to know what to expect. - It's not like renting from Hertz; Cheap Jeeps appears to be a small family run operation with a few personally maintained cars. The seats have Hawaiian pattern covers, the keys have funky keychains, and the cars have personalities. There is no call center, you have to leave a message and wait for them to get it and call you back. - It's expensive to rent a car on Lanai but we knew that ahead of time, there were no hidden charges or anything unexpected. - We knew there would be some limitations about where we could drive so we asked in advance to make sure we could go to our chosen spots (we absolutely WERE allowed to drive on dirt, and we did). If you have a must-see destination, ask ahead of time if you can go there. - All-wheel drive was not needed when we were there, but I was happy having a Subaru knowing we were covered if the rain appeared (which it did the day after we left). Knowing these things ahead of time I absolutely recommend this company. There are big advantages to renting from a small company like this. They were able to help us out by sending "Jim" in our rental car to meet us at the ferry, which was more convenient and cheaper than a shuttle. Jim was punctual and friendly and even gave us a quick tour of the town before sending us on our way. It was like having a local friend to show you around and give advice and tips. Also the car was obviously well maintained and cared for, it ran great and we had no problems with it at all. I was a little leery to rent based on the older comments, however we had no problems with our rental. Yes, it is cash only, but that is like many other establishments on Lanai. The rental contract was a little simplified, but also, you are dealing with real people instead of a huge corporation. (Which those guys spend 30 min trying to sell you extra insurance, GPS, and anything else they can add on!) The people at Cheap Jeeps are trying to protect themselves, that's all. Yes, the rental is only for a calendar day, so plan ahead since you won't have it overnight. Honestly, you should be able to hit all of the 4x4 spots on the island in one day anyway! As for professionalism, I received a very quick email response and was asked to call to confirm everything. When I called, all the rules (6p drop off, cash payment, etc.) were clearly explained. Very professional and very kind. The pick up at the airport was on time, she was just a lovely person and took time to make sure we knew the good spots on the island (we took the hand drawn map instead of paying for the fancy one). It had been raining steadily, so we did get warnings about going into mud and being careful to turn around (prior clients got a jeep stuck!). I think if you use it as a vehicle to enjoy Lanai on the marked 4x4 roads, you'll be fine. They aren't dune buggies or for mud bogging! read more

We rented a jeep from Lanai Cheap Jeeps for a day on the island of Lanai. Jim picked us up at the ferry dock. He took us on a brief tour of the main town and went over the map in detail before leaving us to explore on our own. He helped us immensely in planning our day. He provided us with recommendations for lunch and what to see. He also taught us about the island and we learned a great deal. It felt like we had a personal guide for the first 20 minutes. He was extremely helpful and friendly. We highly recommend this company for a personalized jeep rental. Afterwards we left the car back in the town and my husband took the shuttle back to the ferry. OK, I will start by stating that I opted to NOT rent from Lanai Cheap Jeeps. When they told me that they rent by the "calendar" day, that was enough for me. The 6:45AM ferry to Lanai gets you there by maybe 7:30AM but most likely you will get the 9:15AM which gets you there more like 10AM. So now you pay $124-$165 for perhaps 8 hours of jeep use ! Seriously ? C'mon, Lanai is already ridiculously expensive enough such that most folks visiting Maui only hop over for a day of off-roading anyway. Lanai Cheap Jeeps has positioned their rental day to extract the most tourist $$$ for the least amount of usage. Way to go Lanai Cheap Jeeps ... Yeesh !!! No wonder when everybody else was sold out, these jokers still had jeeps to rent. I just waited for another time when I could rent from Dollar, Lanai Jeep or Executive. read more

The comments on this page are overstated. Yes things are a little loose and the rental agreement is a one page document typed with little information about what happens when damages are incurred, but the shenanigans others have reported did not happen. When you rent, ask for a receipt for the cash transaction, a copy of the rental agreement and confirmation that any loss for the company due to warning lights that they say come on will not be your responsibility. Take a few pictures to make yourself comfortable. She did sell us a Frankos map at 10 bucks which is overpriced for sure, but Otherwise, she was very informative, relaxed and the jeep was in good condition. She took us around the town first and pointed out places to seen. I think she likes her little city and frankly that town is too small for someone to be really ripping people off on a regular basis. We booked a trip to Lana'i without doing a lick of research. The dollar rental agency went out of business just weeks before (after 30 years). In any case, i randomly and desperately emailed cheap Jeeps. Sunny got back to me right away and hooked us up. The process was so incredibly easy. The car was dropped off and picked up at our hotel. They were on time, kind and really exemplified the Aloha spirit. When we needed a car for just one more day, on Christmas no less, and I couldn't get a response from another rental guy fast enough, sunny said those magic words "don't worry, we got you". They worked with our schedule and made it a pleasant experience. Oh, and they also answered every single question about the car, island, things to do AND provided recommendations for some random requests we had. I just read some of the reviews and have no idea how one could write a negative review about Lana`i Cheap Jeeps. Lanai is a small island. Nothing is inexpensive for residents or visitors. This family run car rental agency is very professional and accommodating. They have always gone to great lengths to care for their clients. We have rented from them for family events on multiple occasions. The cars are excellently maintained. The service is professional and yet personal. They have offered this service for many years, welcoming people to their island home. Lanai has no large businesses or car rentals. Lanai cheap Jeep's has proven to be a trusted business used by both residents and visitors. We have only experienced positive things. We are in no way related to this business but are three generations on this island from the 1920's. It hurts us to see reviews of our island that are cruel and in our opinion undeserved. We have used this company and give it a 5 star rating. This is a rural isolated island. Enjoy it's character, scenery and people for its uniqueness. Small businesses enrich our lives. read more
