The Assistant Manager and staff were extremely rude, constantly cutting us off and speaking to us like children instead of customers. The van itself had no AC, warning lights on the entire time, and shook badly while driving. When we tried to get help, nobody was willing to assist or take responsibility. If you are looking to support local businesses while in Maui, Aloha Rent A Car is the way to go. We had a fantastic experience with them from start to finish. We rented a small SUV at a very fair price. While it wasn't a brand-new model and clearly well used, it was still very clean, everything functioned perfectly, and we had zero mechanical issues during our entire week-long rental. It was exactly what we needed for exploring the island. The check-in process was incredibly smooth. They picked us up from the airport immediately, and when we arrived at the lot, the car was already running and pre-loaded with the beach package we added. It made the transition from the airport to the road a total breeze. Note: Since we declined the insurance, we took a quick video of the car before leaving--standard practice, and the staff was great about it. After-hours drop-off is very convenient. Just make sure to read the instructions carefully, as they have a specific designated parking area at the airport. We took pictures and videos again before leaving. We actually had a bit of a personal mishap--my husband realized he'd left his fanny pack locked in the car after we had already dropped it off and headed to check in for our flight. We left a voicemail asking them to look for it. While it took a few follow-ups to locate (luckily we could see the location via the AirPods inside!), the team stayed with it. Once found, they went out of their way to take it to a mailing center so it could be returned to us. We are so thankful for the effort they made to resolve our mistake. One day after posting the review below, the employee I referred to in my review, called me about the review. (To put this in context, I am an elderly woman (82 years old) and the employee was a young man.) He called me names (childish and other names that I can't repeat here), he repeated several times that he wanted to spit in my face, and finally threatened me with a law suit unless I deleted the post and said I could never rent a car from Aloha-Rent-A-Car again. I was fearful of what he would do to me when I returned the car so I deleted my post. Now that one month has passed, I'm posting my original review below: On Christmas Eve, our planned ride did not pick us up from the airport, leaving us stranded. We had a reservation with Aloha-Rent-A-Car to pick up a vehicle on December 26, so we called to ask if we could pick it up earlier given the situation. The employee told us we could rent a car for a day and a half, return it, and then pick up the car we had reserved for December 26. We were in a tough spot and agreed. He mentioned repeatedly that he was in a hurry because it was Christmas Eve and he had five children waiting for him. Because of the rush, he quickly printed paperwork, handed us the keys, and sent us on our way without any real opportunity to review or discuss details. Later, we discovered the paperwork showed a minimum rental of five days, and we were charged for five days--even though we only used the car for a day and a half. We have been renting cars from Aloha for 26 years and (wrongly) assumed this could simply be added onto our existing reservation. Out of courtesy, we didn't want to delay the employee on Christmas Eve, but the rushed process left us no chance to question the charge. When we returned a day and a half later to pick up our reserved car, I asked if we could discuss the issue. The same employee said that because I signed the paperwork, there was nothing to discuss. To make matters worse, the vehicle itself was in poor condition. It pulled strongly to the right, making it difficult to keep on the road, and the brake lights were stuck on, draining the battery. Between the unexpected charges, refusal to discuss the situation, and the unsafe condition of the vehicle, this was a very disappointing experience--especially under stressful holiday circumstances. Great place to be assaulted! Like the other 1-stars, Aloha took rude to a new low with assaulting me as I asked to speak to a Supervisor about the service I received when exchanging a car. I was not being difficult, aggressive or using foul language when this incident occurred. But then Shalia decided to bump into ME and claim I had assaulted her. And as I walked out the door to leave, I was chased down (!!!) by one of their employees who started to push and shove me claiming I assaulted them. They take crazy to a new level at this place and it's disappointing as I was a loyal customer for many years. He would not give his name. called the after hours line for assistance... because the car was not positioned at the airport as agreed upon. and was told to ''shush''' and that he was sleeping... and i asked what his plan was and he told me to ''fuck off and go somewhere else''. Love this place. Reasonable rates on rental cars. Friendly service. The van I had on this trip some of the controls didn't work. But that is OK. Some scrapes and not a perfect car means less of an issue if there is an accident. Best deal on Maui for rentals. I've been using them for years (I think this is our 7th or 8th trip to Maui). Your on Maui. Short trips to the beach or hotel/resort. You don't need a brand new car anyway. Too bad there isn't a rental company like this on the mainland! This was one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. We had a confirmed reservation, but our flight was delayed, so I contacted them and asked if they could leave the vehicle at the airport for the added fee. Instead of helping, I was berated, yelled at, sworn at, and hung up on by the husband. Shortly after, we received a text saying, "The car will not be there." No explanation, no alternative, and no effort to make it right. When I tried calling again to sort it out, I was met with the same rude, unprofessional behavior. I then texted asking them to confirm in writing that they were refusing to provide the car so I could cancel the charge, and they never responded. We never received a vehicle, never used their service, yet my credit card was charged in full and I'm now having to dispute it. Renting cars on vacations can be tricky. And there is a leap of faith if you dare book outside of the national brands. I took the leap and am glad I did. I particularly liked the experience of picking out a car online. They don't have a huge fleet, but they do let you know upfront what they have available. I was given choices among what was available, by make and year. I chose a newer 2 door model for a little more money. These are not perfect 20K miles and under vehicles. Sand, salt and the Road to Hana add wear and tear, so cars don't age well. Prices are very competitive, and they were swift to pick us up when we collected our luggage. Never rent a car from these guys! I rented a car after getting a written quote and then I get back home to find they've added $165 for taxes that they apparently neglected to charge me. I argued that it wasn't fair because I only rented from them because of the quoted price. They basically said "too bad, you have to pay it". The manager was rude, raised her voice, contin interrupted me and the hung up. I placed a review on their website and they replied saying that I yelled at them! wow! total liars! I was very frustrated and had to raise my voice because their lousy manager kept talking over me and wouldn't listen to my side of things, but never once did I yell. IMHO Generally, we book our rental cars from Costco Travel. This year my husband did research on local Maui car rental companies to see if they had better deals. Indeed, they did! Five stars for rental price ($400 less than Costco)! Aloha Rent a Car, here we come!!! After landing and grabbing our luggage, we called Aloha. They told us exactly where to wait and 15 minutes later, Mapu showed up in the big shuttle van. Maybe 5 minutes later we arrived at Aloha Rental. Misty arranged a 2015 Nissan Sentra. The car was clean with a few minor scratches. (I loved that Aloha Rent a Car is located just a few blocks from my favorite lunch place and gallery gift shop!) Two days into our vacation, just as we were heading out for the day, the tire pressure gauge indicator warning came on. We called Misty and told her we were on our way to Kahului. Car exchange was easy. All in all, renting with Aloha was a positive experience. Their staff is very nice and friendly, and accommodating. Would totally recommend. After searching high and low to rent a car, we finally found Aloha Rent A Car (at a very affordable price and decent car choice). The shop was located outside of the airport, with convenient shuttle service. If you arrive or depart after the business hours, there is an extra $20 charge. I arrived after 5pm, and called them when I landed. The driver was there about 20 minutes later. Since the location was already closed, my car was already parked at the entrance. The staff quickly checked me in and went over the service agreement. Everything was really quick. Now on to the car, I knew I rented a pretty old model, but it was somewhat safe to say at the very least. The next day, the tire pressure indicator came on. It was impossible to find a gas station on the island with working air pumps -_-. I was a bit nervous, as I was trying to make the trip to Hana. I made it to Hana, and luckily there was ONE gas station with working air pumps. However, the indicator was still on. I guess with old cars, there's always going to be something wrong. Never rent from a corporate rental company again! Choose to rent local via Aloha Rent a Car. I booked a car several months ago before arriving in July. Many types of cars to choose from and I was able to choose the type of car I drove back home to make it even easier. All cars are used maybe within 5 years old. The staff at Aloha picked me up within 5 mins of my bags arriving and brought me back to their lot. I drove off about 5 mins after check in. No lines or extensive check out procedures trying to sell additional things that are not necessary. Returned the car and Sherman drove me back to the airport. No waiting! I will be using them again and encouraging others to do the same. Lastly if the rental cost was so much more less than a corporate place.! read more

Stay away! When their rental car broke down with a bad battery, they did nothing to rescue us. We had to get and pay for road service ourselves which we did. Then when I asked for a one day refund for losing our last day of our vacation, the manager told me that they don't give refunds. We will never return from them again. DO NOT RENT FROM ALOHA RENT A CAR. We have been loyal customers of Aloha Rent A Car for years. Our family and extended family visit Maui multiple times a year--we own a home on the island and typically rent 4-8 vehicles annually from Aloha. After this experience, they've permanently lost our business. This trip, we rented a compact car and a Dodge Caravan. The van was older, which we were fine with. It made a strange buzzing sound when locking/unlocking the doors, and the key fob didn't work. Not ideal, but no big deal. However, when we picked up the van, it only had 3/4 of a tank of gas. I recorded video and took photos of the gas level, along with a full walkaround of the vehicle in the rental lot. I even have footage of myself telling the employee about the fuel level, and she acknowledges it on camera.Fast forward two days into the trip--we're driving up to the volcano, a half-day trip from where we were staying, and the van's transmission starts acting strange. About a mile from the summit (after already paying $30 for park admission), the transmission gives out completely on a hairpin turn. We were stuck on the road without cell service, with a baby in the car. We let the van cool down and slowly got it off to the side of the road. Now, we understand that vehicles can break down--things happen. We even filled the van completely with gas earlier that day (mind you we received 3/4 way full). We weren't angry, just disappointed to miss the volcano with our family and lose a full day of our trip. Once we regained cell service, we called Aloha and even offered to coast the van all the way back down the mountain at 5-10 mph, rather than have them come tow it. That's how patient and understanding we were. They told us to come switch out the vehicle, which we did. The rental office was on the way back, and they had a gray Dodge Caravan waiting. We swapped our black van (with 7/8 tank of gas) for this gray one. Once again, the new van was given to us with only 3/4 of a tank, which I also documented with video and photos, including me showing the fuel level to an employee sitting in the driver's seat. The first van was returned nearly full of gas as we had just filled it up on the way to the volcano. This second van was newer but still problematic. The key fob didn't work, just like the first van, so we had to use the key, which set off the alarm every time we unlocked the doors. okay, no big deal. Worse yet, the rear hatch door would randomly open on its own. It opened while I was driving down the road, and I also came out of a store to find it wide open. We couldn't leave anything in the van for fear it would fall out or be stolen. Despite all this, we stayed calm and understanding. We didn't make a scene, we made it work, we didn't do a lot of driving so it wasn't that big of a deal. We didn't demand compensation for the park entrance fee, the extra fuel we put into both vans, or the wasted full day. We just made it work for the rest of our trip since we weren't planning on doing much more driving. The real issue came after we returned home, when we saw multiple unexplained extra charges on our bill. One charge was for the 2nd van not having enough fuel, it had over 3/4 of a tank (which is what it started with and we left the first van with a nearly full tank- so in short both vans had more fuel in them than when we received them -photos and videos are proof of this) When we called Aloha to ask about them about the "extra" charges, the manager began screaming and yelling at my brother-in-law on the phone. We have videos and photos of all of this: the gas levels, the vehicle conditions, the conversations with employees, and even a recording of the manager yelling. We never asked for a refund. We simply expected to be treated respectfully and informed of the extra charges after being so patient and cooperative throughout everything. Instead, Aloha Rent A Car treated us with complete disrespect. They've now lost the business of our entire extended family, who rents multiple times per year. Their loss. read more

I almost didn't want to write a review for this place because then I'll end up having to compete with more people for rentals as they find out about this gem. I did a lot of research to find a rental for our trip and it was our first time ever renting a car nonetheless in Hawaii. I originally was going to try Costco but the rates were 3x the rate to Aloha. After finding such crazy low rates I was in such disbelief that I worried it was fake or there was a catch or hidden fees. Fast forward to our arrival and we called for the free shuttle pick up at the airport baggage pick up and they were so friendly and arrived within minutes in a really nice Mercedes van. Then after arriving to the rental place, we got our car in literally two minutes. No hassling or additional fees or upgrades, just a couple signatures to say we took the car and out we went. The only super minor con was that they forgot to give us our free cooler and beach chairs ( it's crazy the car even comes with these as they were a life saver ) but we got them and they were dirty so we had to clean it ourselves. As for the car, we ended up getting a 2018 Sentra and it was really nice and ran perfectly our whole trip. I read from other reviews that they ran into maintenance lights coming on but we luckily didn't have that issue and the mileage on the car was great too. The car wasn't spotless as there was dirt on the mats but thats okay. When we returned the car it was like dropping it off at a friend's. You drop it off say bye and then immediately hop back on the shuttle that drops you straight off at your flight gate. I also saw they had a lot of staff deep cleaning the cars and beach chairs/coolers as we waiting the few minutes to be picked up by the shuttle. Extremely happy with the service we had here and with our rental. It's hard to believe the rates for the car we got but we will come to Maui again just because we don't have to worry about the car rental here. read more

The main reason I am giving this review is because of how we were treated after renting the vehicle. The car we rented was 3/4 full when we first got it. When we returned it to the airport parking lot it was 3/4 full. We made sure to buy gas and made sure it was 3/4 full. Then we got a charge for $37.82. We called and spoke to a young lady who said it had only been half full. We disputed that, but the manager wasn't there, so we called back later. The manager said we owed that much money because the car was only half full (which was a bold-faced lie). He asked my husband if we had taken a picture of the gas gauge to prove we had filled it to 3/4 full. When my husband replied no, he scoffed at him. Then my husband tried to say something and he cut him off and hung up on him. Definitely doesn't understand how to treat customers. Oh, and if it was half full, he charged us $37.82 for a quarter of a tank. Corruption anyone? Don't rent from these people. You will not be happy. What a jerk! read more

We had rented a 2017 dodge caravan from them and 3 days into our trip the vehicle stalled, engine light was coming on and off, and the whole car would jerk when it was shifting gears. I called and explained the issue and they said to bring it in for an exchange. Everything was fine and they were super friendly. With our second van it was a 2018 dodge caravan. The day before we were returning the van it started to beep at us randomly, but we couldn't see any lights light up so we were confused on what was happening. We figured out they put black tape over where the engine light was coming on... On top of that the van was having issues accelerating over 30/35 mph. This was 3pm the day before we were dropping the car off at 7am. I called to let them know that we were having more issues with this van and how it was a little frustrating considering this was the second car we were having issues with. The woman I spoke with was extremely defensive and insinuated we were doing things to the vehicle, and overall not friendly. She said she would have the manager call us back, he called when we were unable to pick up the phone so I called at a later time. This is the part where my 1 star comes in. I called and explained the situation and immediately the assistant manager told me that we returned both cars and neither of them had any issues and we had a car the whole week so there would be no partial refund given. I explained how that was frustrating considering we paid for a service and we were not happy with our service. She then told me " if you don't like your bed at a hotel are you going to ask for a refund" and that I was yelling at her. I never once yelled, became stern and stood my ground? Yes, but I did not yell. She then proceeded to tell me that the car never stalled, even though it quite literally did. I explained how this was scary since I am pregnant and my stepdad is disabled and she told me we were "fine now aren't you". I tried to explain how we didn't feel safe and she just cut me off saying how the cars have no problems. At this point I asked to speak with the manager and she said her husband wasn't available, then 10 seconds later put the phone down and I could hear her talking to him in the background. I then begin to cry because of how rudely she was talking to me and wouldn't let me speak. Her husband, the manager, comes on the phone and tells me that I'm yelling and that there will be no refund and then he slammed the phone down. Not professional at all, I've worked in customer service and this is no way to treat customers. Even if I didn't end up with a refund I was going to be okay with it, but because of how rude they were I felt I needed to explain our experience. I had high hopes for this local place but will be encouraging everyone to find somewhere else to rent because if there are any issues this is how they will treat you. read more

We have used Sloha Rent a Car for 5 years now but this year has been a huge disappointment. From the 75 minute wait at the airport to tha car's engine and low tire lights coming on and it dying constantly . We took it back onto to be told theu didn't have anymore cars and had their mechanic check it out telling us the gas cap was loose and the tire 2as just s sensor going out. Two more days passed and the automatic transmission was stuck and the dual manual transmission would go in and out. We insisted on another car which they finally agreed to but not before asking if we wanted to pay for an upgrade and telling us we would have been liable if the transmission had gone. Whaaaaat! Kim was helping us and never once apologized for the inconvenience. From beginning to end this has put a damper on our vacation and cost us 3÷ hours of time we can't get back. Their once local hospitality and cheaper local cars is gone. I would think twice before renting from them. read more

WE rented a van for family of 5. On day 2 we filled up the van and paid our $30 to go to the Haleakala crater. The van made it 2 miles from the top and the transmission overheated and left us stranded in the middle of the road. After 30 min we were able to turn around and drive back. They got us in a replacement with just under 7/8 tank of gas. The condition was not much better. The back hatch wouldn't stay shut and items were stolen while we were in the shopping areas when we found this issue out. We made do and returned it with 7/8 tank as instructed. After coming home, we were given a final bill with an extra $50 charged to my card. I called and they said the fuel wasn't returned to full. I said I have picture of not being full when we got it and heard the female employee say it was at 7/8. I also brought up the issue with the first van and its issues it cost us and the guy said " it doesn't matter, cars break down sometimes. What do you want me to do?". I don't know not charge us extra for a crappy experience. We will no longer use Aloha or recommend them to others. read more

**COCKROACHES** Absolutely disgusting. We're traveling with a large family, 6 of which is their first time in Hawaii. Therefore, my husband and I wanted to make this trip absolutely unforgettable....lucky for us Aloha Rent A Car has made it just that but not in a good way. When we got the van, we knew there were limited options to fit such a large family so we didn't mind it being a little run down. However, when we opened the door my family saw a cockroach run across the floor of the van. We thought that was super nasty but we only saw one and gave the renal car the benefit of the doubt and loaded up the car and went to the beach. When we returned to the vehicle and opened the door, we noticed very large cockroaches and well as baby ones. We knew we were infested at this point. To top it off, the sliding door to the van would not open from the outside...someone had to crawl through the front seat and open it from the inside. The baby roaches were crawling on our luggage. Anyone staying in an AirBnB knows there's fees for everything. The last thing we needed is to track even one roach inside the AirBnB and it then become infected as well. We immediately called the Aloha Rental once we discovered the problem was a lot more than we had originally thought. We were told they were completely booked and could not give us another vehicle. They do not provide refunds so the best they could do was give us 10% off credited to our NEXT visit in Hawaii. They said they could put "traps" but could not do anything else. She also told me that all the vehicles are like that. We have been to Maui multiple times and have NEVER experienced such a thing. We tried everything...asking for two vehicles instead of another van...nothing. Terrible customer service, did not seem willing to try to figure out a solution in the slightest...mind you we have this vehicle for the next 7 days. This vehicle should not have even been in service to begin with. My husband bought bug spray which appears to be working for now. These photos are after we sprayed. Run from this place if are looking to rent a van for seven people! They gave us the most beat-up, falling apart van that should have been condemned a long time ago! Just look at the photos and you can judge for yourself. The air conditioning was not working past the front seat, and if you sat in the 2nd row the air that was blowing by the floor was so hot it burned my feet! We had to take the van back the 2nd day we were there because this was obviously not acceptable. We were told there wasn't any more vans available to rent for 9 people. Too bad, so sad. They wanted us to wait for the mechanic to see if he could fix the air. Really on our vacation? We are supposed to wait for a repair? We waited for about 35 minutes and miraculously a newer van was found. The first van was delivered to us uncleaned, not even washed, and so was the 2nd van. The windows were filthy on the inside and out. The inside looked like it hadn't been cleaned out in years for the first van, but the 2nd van was better, but not by much. At least our feet weren't getting burnt on the floor when the air was on, and the replacement van still had the directional air flow adjusters in the ceiling. The weather stripping was literally being held in place by duct tape. I would say this place rakes in the money but does little to maintain their vehicles. While they had a shuttle to pick you up and drop you off at the airport, I would run from this place if you are looking for a dependable van. Nothing but junk here, and we paid $952.33 for 10 days! I guess that is cheap, so maybe we got what we paid for! The van was delivered without a full tank of gas as well. Glad we survived running around town during this trip in it. read more

I have asthma and I hate when cars are blasted with chemical perfumes as I often find in car rental places. They avoid that at Aloha. Car is clean, no stinky perfumes, and no problems for my asthma. Also, the air conditioning works great. My insurance company allowed me to up my coverage on my personal car to full coverage for damage or theft, so Aloha did not need the damage waiver. Between the great rates and no need for damage waiver fees, I got a week for under $300. Great deal. So glad I passed on the other airport rental places. Aloha has a shuttle. They come just for you, and its fast. You will wait 5 or 10 min max, if you wait at all. I will definitely use them in the future. Thank you Aloha. read more

We had another great experience with "Aloha Rent A Car", also known as "Al West's Vans". We have rented cars twice here and both times were upgraded to larger cars. This time we rented a mid-sized vehicle, but were upgraded to an almost new, Ford Escape (only 23,709 miles on it). I had never driven this model and they were very helpful in going over the features with me. And the price was great - $218.37 for a rental from Oct 29, 2023 til Nov 6, 2023. They also provide free shuttle service to and from the Maui airport (OGG). The people we rented our condo from, recommended this agency and I'm glad they did. read more

Don't rent from here! I went online to reserve a car but never received an email confirmation. So I called the office to see if they could find my reservation and they confirmed they DID NOT have it. They suggested I go online and try again or they could book it for me on the phone. Instead I went with another company after reading the terrible reviews. Turns out they did have my reservation and I'm being charged a $30 cancellation fee for a car rental they said they never had. And instead of being helpful, the assistant manager was just completely RUDE. I've never experienced so much hostility from a mistake someone else made! She could've just acknowledged they made a mistake and waived the fee instead she doubled down and was RUDE just for $30?? No way $30 is more important than their reputation. Terrible customer service and I didn't even rent a car from them. Heed the bad reviews and rent from somewhere else. read more

The staff was awesome, quality service, the car was comfortable, and just what we needed. In Hawaiian, the word is Ono, which is so good. Thank you all for your friendly service from the beginning to our great service and drive to the airport at the end.
