We worked with Rick and his team to have our backyard and front yard landscaped last year. This was a six month long project. I will break down the review for design, hardscape, and softscape. Rick presented a design for both the front and back of our home. The design was pretty creative and made a best use of our space in the back. His design incorporated a large paved area with a pergola, outdoor l-shaped bbq kitchen, a fireplace with water features. The design also used our existing rose beds to create a beautiful rose arbor in the front of the house. The front of the house had beautiful low fence with a wide stone walkway leading to the front porch of the house. This was the best design we had seen so far and we had a couple from other contractors for this project. We accepted the design with just minor changes. Once the design was accepted Rick recommended a few shops for stones required for the project. Rick provided a shortlist of what he thought looked great but was also open to my ideas when I chose the material. We iterated over a few choices and once we had nailed down on a particular stone tile, Rick shopped for that selection at multiple places to make sure I got the bargain prices for the same. This was true for other material such as blue stone that we got for steps, and the large blue stone for the front porch as well. Rick also recommended a contemporary fireplace that was available online. Again as before he did a thorough search to ensure we got the best product at the cheapest price. The hardscape execution was flawless. Roman and Jose did a spectacular job with stonework in the back and the front walkway. The team also did a super job creating the bbq island and then installing all the appliances, fireplace, water features and the pergola. The attention to detail was amazing. Finally the softscape is what brings everything together. Rick and I researched to shortlist the list of trees and plants. He contacted multiple nurseries to get the plants of our choice at a reasonable price. Some of the trees he obtained were just amazing, for instance he got us a weeping mulberry tree that was brimming with fruit! As usual his team did a super job of transplanting the trees and all the other plants. The icing on the cake was the lighting that was finally installed. Our project was ready in time for our son's grad party. Our neighbors, passers by and our friends - everyone who saw the finished landscape had high words of praise! Landscape Artisan did a wonderful job on our backyard redesign. First step was getting meeting and getting a quote. This was a really good experience - a very detailed quote was provided (4pages) and progress payments. This provided a good basis to move forward. Rick was especially knowledgeable when it came to the design and providing ideas from the type of materials, to colors, to the layout of the pavers and planter walls. The team he assigned were very hard-working, showed up on schedule, and accomplished each task professionally. We saw our yard being transformed with improvements every day and were impressed with the quality of the work; they were even able to resolve minor fixes by the next day. Our entire back yard was redesigned and we are very happy with Landscape Artisan. We had gotten estimates from other companies, but Rick's enthusiastic personality and idea's were the driving factors for deciding to contract with them. Rick worked well with us and met with us frequently to ensure the project was on track to our satisfaction. He was able to keep as much of the costs within our budget as possible, although we added on features later in the project such as the back fencing and hardscape lighting. All I know is my experience with this company. Over five days I called twice then emailed. A few days later I receive an apologetic phone call from Rick and the request to meet. We set a time, I make plans. He calls to push the time back an hour saying he over-booked, I change my plans to meet him. We were very impressed with Rick Nguyen and his entire crew. They showed up on time every day ready to work, even in the pouring rain and extreme cold temps in December. Each member of Ricks team was very professional and friendly. Rick made sure that the materials were at my house in a timely manner so his crew would have little or no down time. As promised, Rick made sure we had a safe way to get in and out of our house during the demolitian stage of our project. Though not for everyone, we allowed Rick to design our front yard according to what he thought would suit best without our express approval. We had a conversation before he started the work and from that, he picked up on the fact that we liked to garden, loved our koi pond, loved travelling to Hawaii with the Asian/Hawaiian themes everywhere and did not want a "standard" yard. When he walked us through his vision virtually, it was hard to visualize but his passion for his art was evident and I trusted that he knew which plants worked well together with our micro climate area. And it is lovely as you can see in the pictures. Rick is a talker but his infectious personality translates into beautiful artistry. If there is any complaints, it is that our garage was left open and it was thoroughly covered in masonry dust. BUT - when I brought this to his attention, he and his crew blew out the garage and made sure from then on that it DID NOT happen again. I am thoroughly happy; my neighbors and friends have already been commenting on how creative and different my front yard is from others. Our house is at a junction of two streets and very prominent. It has really increased our property values. The plants that he chose are easy to care for - except the agave - which has to be covered in the cold nights (but we have gotten used to covering it on frost nights - kind of like taking care of an animal) Once it gets big though, it will be a trouble free plant. Beware of false advertising I called Rick for my backyard project after seeing his magazine advertisement for a free estimate. Instead of free, he asked to charge me $250 for just coming over. Finally, he "waived" the fee after me pointing out his advertisement. We scheduled a free appointment for a week later. Right before the appointment, he messages me again saying that he's going to charge me $250 for the project estimate due to him being really busy. read more

Rick's team did a 1 year project to completely tear out and replace our back yard and I thought they delivered a good value, great looking project, covering many different disciplines. Rick was very diligent, always on hand and very personable (phone works better than email). The quality of the work was high and the team worked hard to deliver a fairly ambitious project. Rick definitely has a 'solutions not problems' attitude. In particular I would call out the crew who were always happy to make small changes and do extra pieces with no complaints.
