I contacted Matt Clayman about revamping my front and back yard. We had some irrigation problems…read morelast year and coupled with last year's drought we had lost most of our front and back lawn. Matt put together an outstanding plan to minimize the grass in the front, construct magnificent stone masonry garden beds in the front populated with lovely greenery and native plants. He also got rid of the home made stone path in our side yard to our fence door and put in a spectacular walking path surrounded by a wide bed of river rock. In the back yard, his team constructed another masonry garden bed which was perfectly level with our back porch and even has very wide stepping stones built in. In addition to all of this the Clayman Outdoors team re-sodded our complete front yard and the most negatively effected areas in our back yard. This was installed only after tweaking our irrigation system so that we wouldn't have further issues going forward. The crown jewel of the project has to be the driveway extension. It exceeded our greatest expectations. The driveway now has a good 3 foot extension on masoned stone. This extends from the cul-de-sac to our front door. It really serves both a practical as well as an esthetic function. Before our two cars were somewhat cramped in the driveway and we would have to walk in the grass to enter the home or bring in groceries. That is no longer the case! The cherry on top of this whole project was the installation of accent lighting. Our entire front yard is now lit with charming bed and path lights. We also have uplifting on our two trees in the front yard as well as the house. My wife constantly says she feels like we are coming home to a resort. This company does excellent work and I would recommend them to anyone.

He was extremely rude and unprofessional. This company does not take responsibility for damage they cause to other peoples property. Both Joshes were out here overseeing progress nearly every day, keeping our sprinklers set to keep our new grass and plants alive during over 100 degree heat for weeks. The crew worked sun up to sun down (this was a new construction home on an acre lot, total landscaping needed), but always left the site clean once they left for they day, including blowing the dust out of the street and driveways. I cannot say enough good things about this company! Everything owner Sean told us would happen, was completed when he said it would be completed. Agave provides front lawn service through our HOA. The contract is fairly new, and I thought no…read morecompany could be worse than the previous company. Agave proved me wrong. Unfortunately, we're forced to continue service with them due to the HOA situation. They have left numerous ruts in our yard. They trampled my Mistflower while pruning shrubs. They have repeatedly mowed over the blooms of my red yucca. They also mowed over a salvia. They have now butchered my sage twice. The HOA claims to have told them to leave it alone, but I put up a "do not trim" sign just to be safe. None of that helped. Someone came to my house to apologize for trampling my plants, but the apology is meaningless if they aren't going to improve their service. We were going to add in additional plant beds this fall, but it's not worth it to spend money on plants that Agave will just destroy. If you have native plants, I would definitely avoid Agave. Even if you have just basic turf grass, be prepared for deep ruts and uneven cuts.

He also provides digital renditions so you can visualize what your yard could look like--if everything goes ideally. The key phrase there, unfortunately, is "if everything goes ideally." I signed a one-year contract for "full" front-yard maintenance at about $500 a month. That's not cheap, but I was willing to pay for comprehensive service because my wife and I both love the look of a well-kept yard, even though we lack the time and expertise to maintain one ourselves. You can probably guess where this is going: the experience didn't live up to the promise. We often had to chase Mas and his team to follow through on even basic commitments, such as installing new flowering plants specified in the contract. This became a routine--roughly twice a month. When we called to check in, we'd usually hear excuses like "the plants are back ordered." To make matters worse, Agave's internal communication is fragmented. You don't get a single point of contact--you get several. One person handles tree and shrub treatments, another deals with the irrigation system, a third manages billing, and sometimes a fourth shows up for "general maintenance." It's up to you to coordinate among them, follow up on loose ends, and ensure that everyone's on the same page. For a company that charges premium rates, that lack of organization is both surprising and frustrating. The final straw came when the finished yard looked nothing like the renditions. When I brought this up, Amy (one of several Agave staffers) said, "Well, the renditions are how things look when everything goes ideally--things may not." I wish I had responded, "Well, I pay $500 a month if things go ideally--things may not." Another major frustration was Agave's relentless upselling. About once a week, they'd recommend additional services--often things that seemed like they should have been covered* under "full maintenance," but were apparently left out to increase revenues. For instance, despite having weed and insect control as part of the plan, when weeds persisted, I was told, "That's not covered--you'll need to replace the entire lawn with new sod." Needless to say, that would have cost thousands of dollars. Likewise, when our crepe myrtles had an aphid infestation, we were charged $129 each time they sprayed--scheduled twice a month--with no guarantee of when the issue would be resolved. If anything ever sounded like a money pit, this was it. It's been about four months since I canceled the contract. Recently, I noticed that one of the dwarf crepe myrtles they had planted had died. I texted Mas, and he sent one of his team members (Matt) to look at it. Matt said they wouldn't replace the plant because the contract had been canceled--which is fair--but then tried to suggest that I should have ordered more plants for a full hedge. When I pointed out that I had followed Mas's original recommendations and renditions, he changed his story and blamed the irrigation system, adding that the plants would fill out in two years if I fixed it. All in all, my experience with Agave was disappointing. While they talk a good game about design and plant expertise, the follow-through, communication, and accountability just weren't there. Between the constant upselling, lack of ownership, and the need to manage multiple points of contact yourself, Agave ended up being far more hassle than help. Unfortunately, I found the team to be less than transparent, and the service far from worth the price.

I saw a few reviews and have to say this... you have to maintain whatever landscaping anyone puts in - whether it be your irrigation, plants, and weeds that follow!!! Weed barrier overall doesn't prevent Texan weeds from growing, and generally I don't recommend or get weed barrier. Use a natural ground cover that snuffs the bad stuff out. You'll also have to replace some plants - they can be finicky based on the elements and soil (or rocks) which can vary in a single yard. If you are new to the area, know this - color is season al but most often everything is green. It requires so much self care if you want color all year around which basically means planting annuals yourself.
