Weather predicted ash and vog when I checked yesterday due to volcano erupting. Even without that we always try to get two seats in here out of the sun and humidity. Good place to sit and eat/drink while you're waiting for boarding. They have A/C! Good assortment of drinks and to/go food in refrigerators. They also have made to order restaurant food. There is ready made pizza (small size so you can take on plane) They have local beers on tap and a decent assortment of hard alcohol for straight-up or mixed drinks. Cheers. Staff is very friendly. What a great find on an early morning 6 o'clock flight. We thought we'd be lucky to get a hot coffee and a roll before we got on our plane trip all the way back to Las Vegas. The sign said the restaurant didn't open until 6 o'clock. However we looked around and there were people in there at 5:45 so we tried the door we went in and we were taken care of by the sweetest lady. They had breakfast that the cook was preparing as fast as he could go on the grill most people came in and just picked those up and went with them and they look good. However we thought to ask could we get a cheeseburger and the answer was yes absolutely. We got the cheeseburger which was absolutely outstanding it was juicy it was hot and we had an order of onion rings and an order of french fries both were absolutely perfect! If you're headed out on Southwest airlines early in the morning and you're not gonna get any food on the plane this is the place you've got to stop eat breakfast before you go on that long trip back to the main land. read more

This place is overpriced however it's not the workers fault. When we were here the workers were very nice. My $6.50 coconut water was leaking so they told me to get another one. We had to get good for an evening flight and grabbed some to go pizzas from here. There is air conditioning which was a relief. This is the only restaurant in the airport so it's pretty busy and seems as though there's always a line. Service was great, not sure if it's the owner or manager but he is a very hard worker. Ringing up customers and also running food to people inside and outside. We both got a grilled chicken burger. Mine without a bun and teriyaki sauce because I like to try and avoid gluten and sugar as much as possible. My husband got fries with his. The chicken was actually pretty tasty and juicy. The shredded lettuce had quite a few very brown old pieces. The fries were too crisp for my husbands liking. And shortly after our flight takeoff he got a very bubbly stomach and felt an emergency coming on and had to run to the bathroom. Luckily that wasn't the case for me. Chaos during the pandemic. What happens when there is only one restaurant at the airport and no meals served on the 6 hour flight back home? This is the only restaurant at the Kailua Kona airport. Passenger jets fly from the west coast during the morning, land and refuel, flying back in the early afternoon. The result is a half dozen passenger jets leaving for the west coast around in the early afternoon. Today there is a passenger jet leaving for Seattle, followed by our passenger jet leaving for San Jose, and following passenger jets going to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Portland. We come to Laniakea Cafe, and the standing line is out the door. All ten 2 person tables and four 4 person outdoor tables occupied. Takes us 20 minutes standing in a line wrapping around the perimeter of the restaurant to reach the cashier to purchase $12.50 Somen Salad, $12.50 Chief salad, and two $9.25 Turkey Sandwiches. We pass on the $12.50 10" boxed pepperoni pizza get dried out in the heated storage area, and wife's favorite $12.50 mandarin orange salad sold out. Don't want to risk drippings from the $12.50 loco moco or $12.50 Hawaiian bbq chicken with rice into my carry on bag. There is another line past the cashier for picking up food from the grill. Will have to give the $11.50 Kalua pork sandwich a try next time we are here. And cannot bring the $12.50 one third pound Angus patty burger on the plane with the tomato in it. Finish off the salads on a 4 person table that has opened up. Three hours later, we finish off the turkey croissant sandwiches, which come without tomatoes due to Hawaii regulations. Even wearing an N95 mask doesn't alleviate the the strong mustard smell from my wife's sandwich in the confined areas of the plane in flight! read more

The lady who took our order was friendly enough and brought the food to our table. The food is basic and seems expensive but is reasonably priced for Hawai'i. For something in the airport, it's not too bad. Of course prices are a bit higher for the quality you get but expectations were low. Loco Moco hits the spot when you are waiting at the terminal. This is the only real food option at the international airport. The food was OK, service was OK. There is a small menu of hot options and a decent sized cooler for grab and go sandwiches, salad, fruit, and drinks. You can eat in the cafe or take your food and go, but can only have adult beverages in the cafe if you are so inclined. I had a fruit cup and a fish sandwich. It was ready quickly and came out quickly. I could not find anywhere to get a fork or a napkin, so got a little messy and was glad I had wet wipes in my carry on. The fish had a crispy coating and a big handful of lettuce and a couple of tomato slices. All in all, it was pretty decent, and for the price, my fruit cup was pretty big and the fruit was very fresh. read more

This is only one restaurant to the block where our hawaiin airlines flight was there, so no other options. Being in kona and serving such a bad coffee is not appreciated. Laniakea Cafe is a bar/restaurant at the Kona Airport where you could get a quick meal and a drink before you catch your flight out. They seem to do a brisk business and the crowd is steady. My wife and I stopped by to have a bite to eat and have a beer. It took us about 10 minutes to get to the front of the line. As you wait there are a selection go grab and go foods such as salads, drinks and sandwiches. We purchased 2 hotdogs at $6.75 each and 2 beers. The hotdog was just OK so it was a little disappointing at that price. If you have time it would be better to buy a snack before you reach the airport. And, if you are craving a nice cold beer and not purchasing food you can forgo the long line and go straight to the bar counter. The beers are good and the selection is not bad. Wood benches available for seating too easy your food or pass time before your flight. Very pricey but then again all airport food is. Outrageous, these people have no decency!! Not to mention that they have disgusting food, but they also kicked the customers out if they don't keep buying more food. We got our coffees and cookies - the only food which looked eatable, but they kicked us out after 15 minutes saying that they need tables for other customers who are buying more food. The tricky part is that there is no air conditioning anywhere near the gates, so people who are waiting for their flights have no other option to escape the heat. Advice: apparently, there is an air conditioned area by the terminal (gate?) 11, so there is that non-obvious option to wait for the flight in the decent condition. How is this friendly fantastic bartender working at the airport bar? I asked myself that once ... twice ... and a third time ... with each successive draft beer purchased (during a long flight delay) at the small bar in Laniakea Cafe of the Kona International Airport . The service was so friendly and jovial that I almost (naw, not really) wish my flight was delayed even more. It was standing room only at Laniakea Cafe! Honestly, it had nothing to do with its popularity as the only bar and food place, but because of Covid safety protocols which limited seats to tables outside. You could go outside, but your drink couldn't. So, as you might guess, I did a lot of standing at one of the "tall tables" for a couple hours. I didn't mind because the beer was hoppy, the service notably friendly, and the options for quick, premade, or pre-packaged foods a-ok. I got a banana to snack on while drinking even though it didn't really "go with" my beer. It was just what I wanted. It was fine. The beer and service were better. Anyways, I passed the hours shifting my stance back & forth while checking news on my phone as I sipped my beers. The local breakfast, eggs over, rice, and Portuguese sausage was warm, ready, and hit the spot. As a local boy, it was what I needed this morning. So, as for the negative reviews. Come on now...you're in a very small airport in Kona. Yes, Kona, Hawaii! Deal with it. It may be a bit pricy, but it's Hawaii! If you don't like it, plan ahead. Bring a sandwich next time. People need to lower their expectations. You're at a busy restaurant in a small airport where the staff is doing the best they can. The food, including the poke, is excellent. They even make a fantastic chicken katsu. Just think of it as a hole in the wall running on island time, which is really what it is, and you'll be fine. They also have options for grab and go (salads, pizza, hotdogs, chips, drink). If you have more time, you can order from the grill. It wasn't bad, but wasn't a 5 star either, but I was satisfied with my food and experience. First off, it is the only food available at this small yet international airport. That being said, the line to buy or order food is long and slow. It isn't the staffs fault, they just have to many hungry people and not enough staff the keep the line moving. I give the cashier kudos for keeping it together. She was by herself taking and delivering order. I got a cheese burger and onion rings. My burger was made to order so it was fresh and hot. It was just your basic cheeseburger, but was fairly good sized and had all the toppings. My onion rings were also made to order and came out hot. It was a big severing as well.
