    Loco moco!

So many options. I was happy to see that they have a little bit of everything and they also have the gallon jugs of water that I like. Check them out.

Delicious plate lunch!! Chicken Katsu Dip w/ Mac salad is our go to. Always great service and plenty of food in one portion.

When I am home in Hilo, we need to drive over to Kona to shop at Costco. We usually arrive just before lunch and I always prefer to eat before we start some marathon shopping, since we try to load up with what we need. On a recent trip this week, thanks to Yelp, I found Kay's Kitchen! Located in the Matsuyama Food Mart, Kay's serves delicious food. Breakfast, Plate Lunches, Daily Specials, sandwiches, burgers and pizza (all made to order. My partner had a Burger, which he said was the best he has had in quite awhile. Their daily special that day was Pastele Stew. This was also just about the best I have had. Prices are good, servings are huge and service is friendly. I am tempted to just drive over to the other side of the island to eat at Kay's. So much more to try! Highly recommended!

    Loco moco was gigantic!

Unassuming and tucked into the back of a small convenience store, Kay's Kitchen has tasty Hawaiian grindz, burgers, sandwiches and freshly baked pizzas. We were hungry and passing through when we found Kay's on Yelp and decided to give it a go. There were a lot of tasty sounding options on the menu board, but we went with a large loco moco and were not disappointed! They grilled two huge hamburger patties up fresh when we ordered, along with our eggs. It came with two huge scoops of rice and all the delicious brown gravy we could have hoped for. Broke da mouth! We watched them hand stretching the pizza dough and saw some being picked up while we were there and made a mental note for future reference. I'll try the kalua pork at some point as well. The market has tons of groceries and other amenities to peruse while your food is prepared, including Hawaiian candies and snacks, treats from local bakeries, camping food, beer, fresh produce, "mainland" eggs, health foods, souvenirs and more. Lots of people were stopping by after work and after their beach trips to pick up late lunches and early dinners, as well as grab snacks for the commute home. Oh -- and the fuel outside was some of the cheapest we saw on the island! Definitely worth the stop if you're hungry or if you need to grab some essentials!

We stoped and got much at Kay'a Kitchen today. As mentioned, it is in the back of a convenance store. It was completely delicious!! Hubbs has the Friday special which was a pork citrus chili over rice and I had the chicken thighs (I prefer dark meat) over rice. Both were really, really good!

I mean, we have literally had a veggie burger all over the country and Caribbean. You can say it's our thing...except we really didn't plan for it to become our sole mission in life. Alas, here we are, and veggie burgers are tasty, so there are worse missions to have. In any case, Google steared us to this restaurant, and we were happy with the suggestion! The restaurant is very small inside; there are probably 8 tables inside. Just something to keep in mind right at the beginning. You order at the counter, then take a seat should you want to dine-in, and they bring your food to you. My husband and I both did a veggie burger with fries. Service was very quick, which is great when you're so hungry you threaten to eat a chair whilst chewing on your hat. I mean, we've all been there, I'm sure! The fries come with a garlic aioli, and it was very good! The fries themselves were equally good and served nice and hot. The burgers were really good! They weren't super tiny, and the bread choice was a great one. The flavor of the patty was fantastic and didn't taste generic, but it also wasn't full of massive chunks of vegetables like some places do. My husband is super picky at times, and he enjoyed everything...even the garlic aioli, which was super surprising! They have a pretty decent menu for regular burgers too!

So yeah, had to try the Yoshino plate that comes with two patties, rice, and mushroom gravy. Huge portion that filled me up quick. The patty is tender and just reminds me of a handcrafted burger from home, not some processed crap. You can tell that they use an old-school, bread-crumb based recipe. Comfort food at its finest. We ordered the Edamame, which had sesame oil and a little chili flakes. It had a slight kick, but it wasn't hot or spicy. Amazing! We then ordered the Captain Pizza, which had house-made tomato sauce, MOzzarella, Pepperoni, Tomato, Black Olives, Mushrooms, and Portuguese Sausage (Large /14" for $36. It was absolutely great! We ordered light sauce, and it came out perfect. The crust was cooked perfectly. Crusty on the outside, soft and hot on the inside. The toppings were perfectly seasoned, and the large size was more than enough for the two of us (we took half home). I also ordered the Liliko'i Kea Beer, which was a tropical passion fruit, coriander, and grains of paradise beer. Perfect! Another great experience. 100% recommend!

Two very large tacos in an order; apparently you can order one and combine with something else on the menu. 5 different desserts, all housemade, three of which are beyond memorable. 1) the Key Lime Pie is actually a monster slice of a Key Lime ICE CREAM pie. The Key Lime ice cream was perfectly copied from a key lime pie. 2) Pineapple Sorbet. More like frozen whipped pineapple than the puréed consistency you'd expect. Loaded with fresh pineapple! Very large serving! 3) Mud Pie, for the friend who orders Mud Pie whenever it's on the menu. She was blown away by the size of the slice and by the quality of every aspect of it. The patio restaurant was beautiful, strings of lights, but with the ocean there, no other decor was needed. Our server was lovely and helpful, the right mix of friendly with giving space. They had a very nicely curated wine list, maybe the best I saw during my time in the island. The menu is focused, I think when this is done in the right way, the food is better for it. After debating, we shared the scallop appetizer and the fish. The scallops were very good, though I did not like one of the flavors of the sauce, though appreciated it was interesting and different.
