I was staying in Selma for the night and searched up a good BBQ spot. Lannie's had top reviews and stars. So I decided to check them out. I'm from Texas so I'm already critical of BBQ but I was in the South and the country the BBQ should be good right? NOT! From the moment you walked in you could tell it was a local spot. No greeting, you just get asked what do you want. I placed an order for 1/2 chicken with Mac & Cheese and beans. They had folding chairs to sit down because the dining area was blocked off from sitting. I paid, and sat down. I wasn't given a number or asked my name. After about 15-20 min I got up to see if my order was ready. There was a line by this time. The girl that took my order said "you got the 1/2 chicken right?" Oh here it is. It had been sitting there. She bagged it up, I asked for sauce and utensils. I got to the room and was starving. I looked at the chicken. Didn't notice any char like I'm used too. But I said maybe it will still taste good. I tasted the Mac and cheese. Needed salt. The beans were OK tasted like they came out of a can. The chicken was dry and didn't look cooked all the way as I got closer to the bone. While the staff was courteous and professional, I would have to say that was the high point of my experience here. The outside had a cool vibe and the inside had probably once been cool, but now they only offer takeout and the inside is cluttered with supplies and whatnot. Not the best ambiance. I ordered the half chicken and for my sides, I went with collard greens and the potato salad. As I ate at one of the benches outside, I found the chicken to be dry and the barbecue sauce to be mediocre at best (and that is a kind assessment). The sides were okay, though nothing special. Finally! During my short stay in Montgomery, AL, I have found AUTHENTIC homemade southern bbq. It was lick every drop off my fingers delicious! Their bbq and hamburgers are good most of the time. But they have messed up our take out order many time. It used to be so much better years ago but it's gone down hill the last 5 or 6 years. They would benefit from having friendlier staff too. Most of the time they seem like they can't be bothered with you. Even when you call your order in , once you get there you still have to wait a long time. Now there is not any place to sit down to eat because they have boxes and packages stuffed everywhere. Poor baby. He wanted me to give two stars. But that fried fish I had was Delicious!!! It was fried perfectly and the flavor was so good. The Mac n cheese is advertised as homemade seemed like a short cut homemade. Food in Montgomery was delicious and homemade. If in Selma, I would totally come back for the fish. Different BBQ then I've had elsewhere. The sauce was fairly thin and reminded me quite a bit of louisiana style hot sauce. I got a good 1/2 chicken on my plate too. The fried Okra was hot and fresh, and had not been previously frozen. The baked beans were in a nice thicky spicy sauce and were cooked with what I believe was bacon, or some other pork product. The bun was average, but nice to have to sop up the extra sauce on my plate from both the beans and the chicken. I believe they also had a few items such as chef salads and sandwiches for take out. The sign outside also advertised that they were available for catering, and had a room you could rent out for events. Lannie's is legendary Selma BBQ. I grew up in Selma, so I still have fond memories of visiting the #1 location on Minter. I remember the smoky room, the fiery pit behind the counter, and the juke box in the right corner. Having moved to Texas my taste for BBQ has changed, but I still visit Lannie's if for nothing more than tradition. Now for my adult take on the food. On this visit we got take-out: ribs, pulled pork, fried catfish, baked beans, and cole slaw. My biggest reaction to the food was..."Wow this is all really sweet!" The baked beans, cole slaw and BBQ sauce were very sweet...a bit too sweet for my current taste. The ribs and pulled pork had a nice taste but needed the sauce (which was quite runny) to really be acceptable. The catfish probably had the best taste of the meats. It was fried a little too hard for me but was tasty. I guess I've just gotten accustomed to TX BBQ, but will always return to Lannie's when in Selma. This is authentic southern pit whole hog bbq. It's a taste you can't get any other way. Grease and fire and repeat. We were driving thru Selma to visit family. My dad says he heard on a tv show that there was good barbecue in Selma. I googled it and found Lannies as #1 and#2 in town. Have to say if you are not a fan of vinegar based barbecue, you will not like the meat. My dad says it was the worst barbecue he ever had. (Mind you we are a military family with lots of travel and varied dining experiences). He talked about that food for two days at our family reunion, every time with a frown on his face. We both will not eat there again. Now for something nice. This company has been around a long time. The restaurant has ties going back to the civil rights movement and beyond. I was able to read some highly complementary historical articles while we waited for the food. The restaurant was fairly busy with in-store and takeout traffic being steady the whole time we were there. So maybe it was just dad and I.
