We had ribs for breakfast before visiting the civil rights sites in Selma and couldn't have been happier. These ribs are sweet, smoky, and tender. The ribs were tough and chewy and for as much as I like bbq and trying different styles, I didn't like their sauce in the ribs. It was like a combination of sweet and sour sauce with ketchup. Lannie's BBQ is not recommended as the place to eat anymore since they stop using open pit. I flew into Selma from Las Vegas via Atlanta in July for a class reunion recently and was informed not to eat there cause the food tasted awful. I checked around and each time the recommendation was the same from everyone I talked to in Selma. I'm passing this information along because I eventually had to go to the Old Orriville Road to get open pit BBQ, and not waste money at Lannie's anymore. read more

Their food comes out piping hot, tender and crispy! The bbq plates and catfish were a hit--side note, some of the best catfish I've had and was tender and crispy. Classic southern bbq spot with a great history and even better food. It is great bbq and soul food too. I love the standard bbq sandwich on white bread--oh man the sauce is great. The rib sandwich is outstanding too. If you are really hungry get the fish sandwich or the burger. Both are so tasty and so big. The wings are also worth it. The sides are better than most. Fried okra and onion rings are musts. BBQ beans are solid as is the slaw. Then the sweet tea is among the best of the south. No kidding. OMG This is the best pork BBQ I've had in Alabama, hands down! This humble cinderblock BBQ restaurant in an economically depressed neighborhood in Selma has been putting pigs in smokers and serving them up on plates since 1946. But while the neighborhood has clearly seen better days, we never worried about the setting for one minute and wouldn't hesitate to come back. I ordered the rib plate, which I expected would have 2-3 short pork ribs on it (like we get them in Texas). NOPE - this is the South, where it's ALL about the pig!! I got 4 thick pork ribs, each 7 inches long, served with delicious baked beans and crispy fried okra. Heaven on a plate! My daughter had the fried bologna sandwich. Mmmmmmm I had not had fried bologna since I was a kid, and I don't know why? This was a beautiful sandwich - smoked bologna crisped on the flat top grill, served on grilled white bread with homemade mac and cheese and green beans on the side. DELICIOUS!! I ate there last night and the food was not all that good. The sides weren't nothing to talk about, the meat(chicken) was dry and inside you could definitely tell meat was old. I had a bad experience contrary to what the reviews said. After last night I probably want every go there again. I was highly disappointed for the price they charged me. I could have definitely went to zaxby's or tried that other restaurant golden ranch or something ( probably been a whole lot satisfied that at Lannie's. After wasting $15 and completely still hungry after assuming Lannie's would take my hunger away with happiness. I ended up going to Taco Bell to quench my satisfaction. This was my first visit to Selma during the 53'rd anniversary of bloody sunday. after speaking to a few people that I knew from the area, every one kept recommending lannie's for lunch. we went to lannie's 1 which is in a neighborhood, not sure where the second location is which is operated by the son. the location is very small and has about 6 booths available. theres a local guy selling goods such as purses, perfume, etc. the staff is straight forward and not really the "let me help you figure out what you want kind". we settled on the rib plate and the bbq pork plate. the sauce is very wet. it's not a thick sauce but more so a red water combo which the meat sits in. it's very runny and not what i'm use to. aside from the lack of sauce the seasoning was empty as well. the sides do not have any seasoning on them and there isn't any salt or pepper available on the table to use. overall I would've much rather skipped this. they were fairly busy during lunch so my opinion is obviously just that. read more

My time visiting Selma, Alabama, Lannie's BBQ was a repeat almost every single day of my 5-day visit. They have the best pulled pork shoulder sandwich. The sauce is perfect. They'll put a piece of fried skin in your sandwich if you desire. I highly recommend it for that extra special touch and crunch. We all know it's unhealthy, and made even more unhealthy because they use white bread. And you know it's unhealthy while you're eating it. But it doesn't matter, you pretend like you're oblivious to that fact, and you convince yourself that you recognize that you're going to die of something so it might as well be from this heavenly sandwich. I have no idea how the rest of the items on the menu are. All I've ever had at Lannie's barbecue is that pulled pork sandwich, always with the crunch skin inside. Highly recommend if for some reason you're anywhere near or in Selma, Alabama, you stop in and get the pulled pork sandwich at Lenny's Barbecue. They were tender to the point of slipping right off the bone, but still weren't overly soft. The sauce had a hint of vinegar - not your sugary sweet BBQ. The rib sandwich was basically bread slices with ribs between - skip the sandwich and just get ribs. The pork chop was amazing. Very flavorful. You have to drive through a residential neighborhood to get to this hole in the wall. I had stopped by the Selma Post Office to drop off some mail and I asked the postal clerk "Who has the best BBQ in the neighborhood" and he said Lannie's. I was surprised to find both locations were fairly close to each other, but I ended up going to the original down in a neighborhood off route 80. The inside is very simple yet clean. Ordering was a curious experience since I was not charged until the food came out. This took at least 15 minutes which I enjoyed because my food was made to order, yet quite lengthly since I was hungry. My order was to go and once I returned to my hotel room, I was delighted to start my meal. The hot link sandwich was basically a glorified hot dog with neon red coating on two slices of white bread with mustard. The wings were fantastic; I just wished I'd had more hot sauce packets. The ribs, however, were my biggest let down. The sauce had a strange bite and the ribs themselves resembled more county rib cut as opposed to spare or baby back. The fires and potato salad weren't that intriguing either. Not sure I need a return visit to try other dishes, but I would love to have enjoyed this more. read more
