Clear base broth is excellent with any of the soup noodles. Noodles are well made and dense enough that it will take you a bit to digest compare to rich based noodles like Pho. Seafood dishes are fresh, Meats are large chunks and well cleaned. Bok Choy in soup noodles are not soggy, but crunchy. Seat is limited, but there is a high turnover. read more

Not really 3 stars, but not really 4 either. The good: The broth is very good. The noodles are excellent and have a good chew, the roast pork isn't too fatty or too lean. So, the food is good. The bad: The hand pulled noodles and knife pulled noodles get cooked together. They are pretty good at keeping them separate but sometimes you get a little bit of the other. I had the hand pulled and got a little of the knife pulled. Also some of the noodles seemed like they weren't separated properly and were double thick. They need more menus up. They had one at the door and one at the register. If you miss the one on the door then you're standing in line to order for a few minutes with no idea what the options are. The ugly: Way crowded and the food comes out slowly. This contributes to it being even more crowded cause they can't move tables fast enough. I'm not really one to focus on the experience over the food, but they need to streamline process so you can focus on the (pretty good) food without being annoyed by the entire experience. My friend and I ordered the vegetable and tofu noodle stir fry, he got hand pulled while I got knife sliced. Overall, the knife sliced was thicker and chewy while the hand pulled resembled a slightly thicker spaghetti. Flavors were excellent although we received cold tofu and both of our dishes were cross contaminated with pieces of beef and beef fat along with the noodles literally dripping in oil. If you're vegetarian, I would emphasize that or avoid this place if you're scared of cross contamination. Personally, I don't think I'll be returning until they work out the kinks, go a little slower, and are more detailed oriented. TLDR: Overall service was great, would probably recommend this for take out. Avoid if you're vegetarian unless you're okay with cross contamination. Lanzhou is in a mall and it looks like it's going to be a mall experience--but the food is unusually tasty and authentic. Soups are very nicely balanced with the kind of real cuts of meat that American style Chinese restaurants avoid. The dumplings are perfect and The scallion pancakes addictive. But I get stir fried noodles mostly because they're delicious and a very good deal: brisket is great, much better quality than most places, and tofu and vegetables will satisfy and surprise your meat-eating friends. Perfect place for a rainy day. I have gotten takeout from here twice and was impressed both times. My first experience was great. I got the Beef Noodle Soup with hand pulled noodles and an order of pan fried Chive Pork dumplings. The soup looked simple enough but it was so hearty and fulfilling. The second time I got the same order but tried knife sliced noodles which were thicker and chewy. After I was done, I felt as though I would be full for days! Totally worth it. The only downside was they forgot to pack my dumplings the second time. I realized this after I got home and I called back to let them know. I've always wanted to try this place out ever since I saw it on yelp's "Hot and New" segment. I thought it was about time to have some genuine traditional hand-pulled noodle around my area, but mann -- was I wrong. My brother and I went on a Saturday afternoon, and let me tell you; the restaurant is impossible to miss, just look through the window... (lol don't even bother raising your head to check the sign) The atmosphere could speak for the restaurant itself. Walking in, you will be greeted by blaring sounds which would most likely be Chinese. After entering, you would either be going back out the door to wait in line or if lucky, at the door. During the time I went, there was no visible menu above the cashier or anywhere. They at least had some entertainment since customers were able to see the process of hand-pulled noodle which I thought was pretty neat +1. Ordering took a good 5 minutes, it was significant enough to which it made me feel bad for the others waiting in line. After ordering, we had looked around the room and found that all the seats were taken. It wouldn't be a common occurrence if you saw 3 - 4 people sharing a single table. Getting a table was slower than ordering, a restaurant of this size is impossible to serve the sheer amount of popularity it was receiving (by mostly asians/chinese). The restaurant was filled with families, and with this factor, we expected the food to be somewhat good/decent. As our food came out and arrived upon our table, we asked the server a question but no answer. The server just walked off with no words, we even said thank you... it seemed as if she was tired or hated her job (I wouldn't blame her though, the place did look intimidating to work at). I ordered the Beef Noodles while my brother got the Duck Noodles, and we ordered an extra Beef Tomato Noodles just for the heck of it. We had also ordered a plate of dumplings but it still hadn't come yet. The broth was decent but the noodles lacked flavor, even when eaten with the broth. It legit made the broth taste bland and flavorless, it didn't help the noodles at all. My brother's opinion was similar too, he said the noodle was definitely hand-pulled but it lacked flavor and authenticity. It could be compared to a pack of instant ramen noodles only if the ramen noodles were slightly thicker. It just wasn't there... it just wasn't good. We were severely disappointed, just as we were about the leave -- the dumplings came out. The dumplings were surprisingly the most enjoyable out of everything we had tried but still mediocre. I honestly gave the restaurant a 3-star because of the food. I know I said it wasn't good but it isn't inedible... it would definitely be a 2-star if I had counted service. The service was unacceptable, it was almost disrespectful. Even though all this is said, the restaurant does have it's own customer base since it is the only "authentic" hand-pulled noodle restaurant in the area. read more

This place was mediocre. The noodles were pretty good but the beef was not the best I've had. Besides food, the service was awful. We waited around 40 minutes to get our food and the management is terrible. You get a number for your order and they give them out according to when you order but they don't follow the numbers when serving. My number was 52 but they served 55 before me which was extremely strange and upsetting. If you want to get some good noodles with fast service, I would highly recommend A&J. read more

Picked up the Beef Combination Hand Pulled Noodle Soup and it was yummy! I ordered the thin noodles and they were perfect! You get a big portion for the price - I got 3 full meals out of it! The only thing I would suggest is to order extra vegetables so the meat to veggie to noodles ratio is more balanced. Enjoy! read more

You know this place is legit when you walk in and there's a guy making fresh noodles in the traditional way - pulling them by hand! I got the beef brisket noodles, but I wasn't super super impressed. It had a very light flavor, the spices that usually go into Lanzhou lamian is on the level of a LaCroix drink. Overall, wish I liked the noodles more, and found out about the chili sauce that's on the counter where all the takeout containers are! The one thing I LOVED here was the shen zheng bao, the steamed pork buns with the crispy bottom. It was crunchy on the bottom and so so tasty. I saw them making it while I was in line and had to get them, and I recommend them for everyone who eats pork. read more

Those looking for exceptional ramen, don't forget your exceptional local ramen eatery (and check out the Washington Post article, no accident). I liked the baby bok choy, perfect in soups. Hand-cut noodles are chewy and will visually remind you of handmade pasta, worth trying. The regular noodles are, truth in advertising, hand-stretched before your eyes. Outdoor tables are well-spaced, under an archway/entrance to the parking deck. When you arrive, you will notice the tables are a bit dirty. Have no fear, they will cheerfully give you a disinfectant wipe to clean it up. Then, when you sit down to eat your noodles, you will immediately understand how the tables get dirty. Okay before I start, I absolutely love beef noodle soup. I've had really authentic Lanzhou beef noodle soup, so with those expectations in mind (plus all the solid reviews), I ordered the tomato and beef soup. However, I made the mistake of not specifying for knife-cut thick noodles (flat and longer in width) from the hand-cut type (see photos) and ended up with the cashier assuming for hand-cut thick, which ended up with my picky-ness only having literally two bites and a whole lotta wasted hand-cut noodles. So definitely make sure that when you order to specify for which type of noodles you'd like-- I'm sure that would have put back another star. Unfortunately the broth was also quite bland (shocking! to come from me as my tastebuds are weak(sauce) and like everything toned down a notch). I would be happy to hear if they didn't put any msg and that was the reason for the blandi-ness, but I would also have appreciated that more effort was placed into the preparation of the broth... a good broth can really change a life! read more

This place caught my attention as I was walking by. Kind of small on the inside but the taste makes up for it. Grab any available seat and prepare of the experience.
