I love this market!! They stock so many Laos/Thai essentials here that you don't commonly see in bigger supermarkets. My favorite part is their frozen sausage section, they have a whole freezer full of different types! I saw Laos, Thai, Cambodian, & nam sausage. They also have freshly prepared Laos dishes like nam khao & papaya salad! The size of the store is small but they have an amazing selection. The owners here are super kind too, they'll help you with whatever you're looking for. Parking here was easy, we found metered parking right in front. read more

Cute Lao market - this place has all the bells and whistles for your homecooked Lao inspired meals. There are even Mortar and Pestles for sale (of all sizes), and the sticky rice bamboo baskets on the shelves are so pretty! There are sauces, noodles, rice, and fresh vegetables to shop through. We were in a rush so didn't get to look through every aisle at leisure but at first glance, you can find almost every spice and herb you need for lunch and dinner. Absolutely one of my favorite markets in all of Oakland. Not only is it incredibly well provisioned, you can really feel that the owners are a part of the community. They know their customers names and strike up friendly conversation. Whole Foods could never. Long live the community market! I feel the thrill of discovery every time I come. The MUST COP list: - Crunchy lao snack!! They usually have these right up front in the bags with the gold back and clear front. It's like a spicy fried wheat and chili snack with lots of fried basil and sesame seeds - so fragrant and unique, GREAT party snack. Some have pork rinds and the other kind is vegetarian. - Any of the delicious sausages in the freezer in the back. My favorite is the mild Hmong sausage. If you like spicy, they sell a locally-made Lao sausage as well. - Other various assorted crunchy snacks found in the front - the fresh fried pork rinds and crunchy pig ears are my other favs. It's an especially great experience when one of the younger women is working because she's so kind and patient answering my many questions. If she's reading this... that spice that you said is used in larb that we couldn't find the name of on google... it's called mah kwan pepper! read more

The owners are lovely people who care about the community. Their store is always neat and tidy. They have a large selection of Southeast Asian groceries, snacks, essentials and housewares. Their drink variety is huge for the size of the store. They even carry the original Red Bull drink from Thailand. I came here last Friday with my husband because I wanted to make papaya salad.It was my first time at this store and the cashier San and Diana were so helpful and knowledgeable about the products in the store.We felt welcomed and were able to purchase everything on our list.The store is small but well stocked with all types of products.We asked for a recommendation on the best Lao sausages and they did not disappoint.They were delicious! They also have a full freezer filled with different brands of Lao sausages which we will gradually try them all. Awesome grocery store! Really great service, the people there were so helpful and happy to answer questions. They have a small store that is absolutely packed with hard to find Lao and Northeastern Thai ingredients. For example, they have many brands of pla ra (specific type of freshwater fish sauce), a huge selection of Thai and Lao sausage, and 3 or 4 different brands of salted paddy crabs (most other Asian markets don't even have 1). They also have a nice selection of sticky rice pots and baskets and mortars and pestles. Prepared foods are also very good, if you're into sum tum, their Lao style sum tum is quite nice and very reasonably priced. read more

This market has considerably improved since the last time I've been here. I think it now rivals Lao Jaleune in Richmond as the better Laotian market in East Bay. (Lao Jaleune is a little too cluttered and dirty for me, and the last time I visited, the selection wasn't great). On the other hand, this market has a great selection of Lao and Thai products, while still being very clean. They have your staples: - A great selection of Lao cookware (tons of sticky rice baskets and steamers, granite and clay mortars and pestles, noodle strainers) - They have a very strong selection of Thai grocery items (Healthy Boy fish sauce, Tiparos fish sauce, Ros Dee flavoring packets, even Thai Nam Phrik, Healthy Boy XO sauce, Isaan Som Tum mix) - The fresh produce selection was so clean! Papayas, green mangos, Lao chilies. - Frozen Lao and Hmong sausages from Samthong Market in Sacramento This time, they didn't have a wide selection of home-cooked food to take home. I came on a Saturday afternoon. But then again, neither did Lao Jaleune! I attribute it to cutting costs during the pandemic. If you're looking to stock up your Lao and Thai pantry, you can definitely come here and support this family business. What left me impressed was the variety of new Thai products this time. I've been wanting to cook Nam Khao Tod for several months and this market seemed to be the only one in the SF Bay Area you could get naem, one of the key ingredients. The sausage is located at the back of the store. We were kind of clueless when looking for naem. Later we figured out we were looking at Lao Sausage which is not the same as the sour, fermented naem. We ended up buying a package of Lao Sausage ($12 for 2 lbs) but I wasn't convinced. I tried the market next door, Mekong, and low and behold they had actual naem ($3 for 5.2 oz). Both stores had a lot of other Asian ingredients, some I've seen before and others I've never. The lighting is really low and I would stick to the dry goods (check the dates). If you're looking for naem though definitely go next door to Mekong. read more

I called ahead of time to ask if they had a mortar and pestle. The woman I spoke to was very nice and helpful. I came by a little while after to buy it and the woman I spoke with, her uncle helped me out and he was so nice. He gave me recommendations and showed me new products that they had. He liked to make conversation which made me feel comfortable. I have a hard time finding Thai and Lao ingredients. So I'll be coming back here for my groceries. He even helped me to my car because I had my two kids with me and the mortar's were heavy. It was very nice. read more

This little market is great! I was actually looking to buy a Lao Mortar and Pestle to make their green papaya salad. This place had it and it was much cheaper here than buying online. I also picked up the Bamboo Sticky Rice Steamer and a bag of Sweet Rice. The owners were really sweet, they walked me around the store letting me know what items I would need for the papaya salad. :) I am sure they were happy I showed great interested in their Lao Culture. I will definitely come back and pick up items for my next Lao dish. read more
