So let's talk outside parking not much but it's because they share with everyone else so it's fine. Now let's talk inside when you walk in you are greeted with fresh baking bread so yummy. I will have to point out that the aisles are too narrow not much walking space not only that you have people not knowing what to shop for. Anyways let's talk meat department. What a chaotic place to shop at specially with only 1 worker just helping customers out. There are about 30 people waiting to be serviced and only one guy working while the other lady talks to a friend of hers or something. I feel like if you are going to be a big Mexican grocery store you should have more workers in your meat department since it's the place that people shop at most since you guys have good prices. Lines for check out is insane too. Your employees look mad and not happy to be at work. They treat customers so bad. I had a cashier bump into me from behind no excuse me no sorry no nothing like wow not even that! Now is this place Dendinger approved sorry but no I feel you guys got to do much better with space wise maybe organize better and have more people helping out the busiest department. This is a convenient local supermarket for me since I live nearby, and I recently popped in to grab some items for a potluck. If you've been to any standard grocery store, the layout is familiar enough that you can easily find your way around without speaking Spanish. If you need help finding a specific item, it definitely helps to know the Spanish word for what you're looking for. That said, the staff is very friendly and more than happy to point you in the right direction. Just a heads up on the parking lot, it's like the Hunger Games, but for parking. May the odds be ever in your favor, because you probably won't find a spot. read more

However I am disappointed to note that one of the young female grocers acted in a vile discriminatory way leaving me to bag all of my array of fruits by myself with only two people in her short line. She bagged the gentlemen's groceries behind me who had a handful of things to carry out. When confronting her on it she said that they only bag occasionally when the line is short. It's never a quick trip here. Whether it be a long wait for the butcher or for the register, you get stuck waiting. At the butcher there's 1-3 workers for over probably 15+ families just waiting. Certain workers, mostly the younger females that work here between age 20-35 are extremely rude, they look so unhappy and miserable. They all need to get replaced by friendlier workers that actually have a little pride in their job. But that's not why I am here writing this review... A day Before Christmas I came here to buy LA ROSCA DE REYES PAN, a traditional bread that is used in Mexican Christmas tradition, supposed to have 2-3 little plastic baby toy inside to be inside of the bread, so someone in your family will pick it out, and have to throw a posada party. It's a Mexican tradition. We'll..... THIS BREAD FROM CARDENAS DID NOT HAVE ANY TOY INSIDE, the advertisement on the container does say it will have it, FALSE advertising. Breaking a Mexican tradition, and selling false advertisement. In 2016, KKR bought Mi Pueblo and Cardenas and in 2017, they merged the supermarkets together, getting rid of the Mi Pueblo brand. Actually, the founder of Mi Pueblo, Juvenal Chavez, has a very inspiring story about how he started and finished with the $300m company. Sadly, he then went into bankruptcy in 2013. Quality/Quantity - Produce is ripe, ready to eat. If you want to buy produce to eat later, you need to go to other brands. Atmosphere - Huge, clean store, except bathrooms. Bathrooms are not dirty, just not clean. Plenty of parking. Meat & Seafood Departments - marinated meats and a full service butcher staff Produce - I buy most of my produce here Bakery - FRESH tortillas made throughout the day Hot Deli Grocery - department I shop the least at Customer service - Western Union, check cashing, utility payments, money transfers and money orders Be careful as they have aggressive people approach you in the parking lot for $$ at times. Service - Good and since I come here once a week on the same day and time, everyone knows me. Funny part is that I speak Spanish to them and they reply in english, LOL They also have a scholarship program through their foundation. Price - Best sale prices out of all the supermarkets here. OK, this is my first time ordering hot food from this market. Wow, they give you alot of food! I ordered the 8-piece grilled chicken combo (leg and thigh), and I had no idea it was so much food. They consider 1-piece of chicken to be the leg and thigh together. So their 8-pc bucket is 16 pieces everywhere else. Then they add fluffy rice, refried beans, and warm tortillas. Really enjoyed our recent shopping here, a full-on Mexican market where everyone was tolerant of my sloppy attempts at Spanish. Had the carnitas de res for tacos and the flavor was perfect. The fresh made maiz tortillas were the delicious vehicle for the tacos we made, and certainly the produce was fresh, felt like we had just wandered in off the zocolo. So disappointed. We purchased about $105 worth of flap meat for our son's party and my husband cooked a couple of pieces of the flap meat to bite into A SMALL METAL PELLET!! That was already horrible to bite into a metal pellet, So we were like maybe it was just that piece, but NO HE BIT INTO ANOTHER SMALL METAL PELLET!!!! Never again are we purchasing anything from there as we do not know where their product is coming from and how their meat is being handled. It's weird pre-sliced fruit that is good quality is hard to find; you are not going to get it from Trader Joe's, Sprouts, Safeway, to my knowledge it was only Whole Foods. Whole Foods did sell the best sliced pineapple from San Jose to Berkeley, it was costing me a pretty penny... then Cardenas came through with its freshness, sweetness, and affordablenessasss! I go for the meat department prices and the bakery. However as an African American I've noticed on several visits I feel rude customer service. All of a sudden the cashiers will see me in line and they cut off their smiles, don't say hello, bag my groceries very carelessly and harshly. Then the security never EVER says hello or have a nice day when I speak to them. I am always reminded of why I don't shop there often. It's convenient because you find everything you need all in one place, but the long lines at the registers is why I choose to go to the smaller supermarket across the street. They have about 8 registers and only have 3-4 working at a time. It's beyond pathetic and extremely rude towards their customers. They assume that people are ignorant and that they are somehow irreplaceable, so I really believe this is why they don't care if people have to wait so long to pay. I would give Cardenas zero stars if I could. I've been there countless times and have had ok service, not horrible but not great either. Yesterday I went to order a tres leches cake with my partner, who happens to be Afro-Latino, and the stares he got from the employees was uncomfortable and left us with a sick feeling. Maybe management should invest in some diversity training to teach our people that Black folks are not criminals and that Black Latinos exist. The security guard was especially rude; when my partner greeted him in Spanish he just stared at him and didn't mutter a word. Do better. Yo les daria zero estrellas si pudiera. If I could give a negative star I would. Now I am Mexican American grew up here. I went to church and school here. There used to be to be a store on E14th (now International) that had a meat market, they were the best, they could down years ago. Anyway, I know my way around a Mercado, but this place was too much. The staff is not helpful at all. Everything is overpriced. It was known before that when you wanted to get "Mexican" items you went to the Mercado or pay a lot of money at Safeway for the same thing. Not here you are spending just as much if not more. Then the waiting...this is what gets me. I am waiting in line for meat, bakery, or cooked items FOREVER. The managers don't care. They are walking around doing nothing. The staff there don't know what they are doing and are rude. My husband likes to go there for the Mexican sweet bread. I go other places before we run out, just to make sure we don't go there. I use go there more often when it was run by another company, but now there is no reason to go. I am sure I will not get a response from Ratheli (customer service manager) as she only seems to respond to the positive feedback. Love the aqua frescas. Come here Ll the time for it! The shopping is quite expensive since the sugar fee is a lot added onto different products like drink mixes and candy. Cardenas Mexican supermarket is a large grocery store that took over for Mi Pueblo supermarket last year. This place offers a lot of Mexican food staples, and a great food court with lots of delicious lunch and dinner options. This is a very typical, large chain Mexican grocery store, similar to Vallarta down in Southern California. It seems like once this place was bought out by a larger corporation, they took some of the customer service with them. They still offer you a vast selection of Mexican staple items and fresh produce but have longer lines now. They do not utilize the 10 items or less line to help with efficiency, and there is a lack of motivation from the workers. I've not tried the food in the food court since the buyout, but do love their prices on fresh meat and produce. I hope they get more checkers and give these people a raise to get back to their Mi Pueblo standards. I'll update this review if they improve or their food court makes me feel otherwise. read more

I was racially profiled and detained at the store on High St. by an overzealous security guard. All I had in my hand as I exited was a drink, an Agua fresca, and he blocked me from exiting the store, posturing and finally demanding a receipt, to prove what? That I hadn't stolen a fountain drink? When the clerk at the counter substantiated that I had paid and there was a receipt, this security guard said to me, Fk you. So I was unlawfully detained, insulted, profiled, and I still can't figure out why. I have shopped there hundreds of times but usually with my bf who is Latino. I was there another time and we had gone to the meat counter to get some shrimp, I noted the price per pound. 9.99. We get to the register and the clerk holds up the bag of shrimp and apparently the clerks at the meat counter did not affix a sticker. So I told him, the shrimp are 9.99 a pound. He scoffed at me, turned and left the register with 10 people in line, was at the meat counter for a very long time, and came back. I asked him, how much per pound? He said 9.99. I said, I told you that. He said nothing else. These people have HUGE personnel issues. read more

I go here for their hot/prepared foods section, mostly for their daily/weekly specials. On Taco Tuesdays you can get tacos for about $1.25 to $1.50 each. Buy 4 tacos and get the 5th one free. Usually on Thursdays you can get 8 pieces (4 legs with 4 thighs, or 4 whole quarters) of their bbq chicken, with 10 fresh/warmed corn tortillas, and salsa fresca for $6. Their horchata and agua frescas are a pretty good deal for a 24 oz drink. I have also had their whole fried fish ($6) every now and then. Today I tried their Caldo de Res, which is a 24 oz serving of chunks of beef in a clear broth soup with cut carrots, zucchini, potatoes, and cabbage in a clear broth. That comes with a side of 4 corn tortillas, 1/2 cup of rice, and diced onions/cilantro with lime wedges. Very soothing, tasty, filling, and a good deal for about $10. They also have pretty decent specials and sales everyday for their produce and goods. You can get a whole range of different mexican chilis (fresh or dried). There are plenty of mexican pastries and desserts in their bakery section too. Plus you can find plenty of mexican goods not found in mainstream groceries. This supermarket used to be called Mi Pueblo over a handful of years ago. Either case, I recommend this grocery store as the aisles are clean and spacious. Plenty of parking in their lot too. I ordered delivery from Cardenas yesterday through Uber eats. I ordered the Family meal with carnitas. The food arrived "packed" in such a manner that can only be described as crazy. Whoever packed my order literally dumped some cooked meat into a plastic bag- no container, no foil, no nothing. For whatever reason, they packed the rice and beans in normal containers with lids but decided to throw the cooked meat directly into a plastic bag as well as throw the cooked tortillas also into another plastic bag. I have never seen COOKED meat and tortillas packed in such a manner...this was completely shocking. If I had ordered this in person and they had handed me the meat in a plastic bag, I would not have accepted and paid for it. I definitely am never ordering from here again. After seeing the weekly Cardenas ads in our local paper, I have stopped by several times for their produce specials. The store is located on High St, about five blocks east of 880. The supermarket is one of three businesses on the property and the parking lot gets crowded by mid-day. Coming here before the noon hours, parking is less of a challenge. Wonder if all the cars in the lot are actually customers of the market. The store is a full supermarket with a bakery, meat and seafood, hot foods and fresh tortillas sections. But I've been coming here for the deals on produce, like oranges for 3 or 4 lbs. for $.99 and Bosc pears at 3 lbs. for $.99. Overall, produce is fresh and very reasonable here. Cashiers are pleasant and service is good. Don't know if I would do my overall shopping here, but I'll be back for their produce specials. read more
