10 lbs ($13) noodle for Garlic noodle
    Sandra K.

FRESH NOODLES! We come here to get Ee-Fu noodle for hot pot, thick noodles for the infamous garlic noodle, and fresh chow fun. It's cheaper the more poundage of noodle you purchase. We usually get the 5 cakes of Ee Fu noodle and the 10 pound bag of thick noodle ($13). Parking is tricky, so usually D drops me off and "double parks" while I run in.

Oakland Chinatown's secret to the best chow fun, chow mein, egg noodles and wonton wrappers! Open on Saturdays. Been coming here for over 25-30 years!

This is my go to place for won ton skins which has been around for years. My Dad used to get the won skins from here. YHC has a wide assortment of freshly made won ton skin wrappers, dumpling wrappers, spices, sauces, other bottled and canned items, and an assortment of vegetables and fruits at prices much better than your basic supermarkets. I come here to purchase the thin won ton skins, green onions and water chestnuts for my Dad's won ton recipe (60 years and counting). The won tons I make are along the lines of the ones that King Wah Restaurant made. The original Owner of King Wah said his secret was oyster sauce which is what my Dad used too. If you're making won ton, dumplings or noodles this is the place to get fresh noodles and wrappers. Love, love their product, can't make good won to. With fresh good wrappers.

Love this place for fresh won ton wraps (different thickness), potsticker, and dumpling wraps and fresh egg/rice noodles in various thickness! Just bought 6 of the medium won ton wraps (abt 35 to a pack) to make and freeze as needed for these cold days...also, will make some for a few lucky friends! Also, bought these items to add to the won ton: * fresh water chestnuts (beats the one in the can!) * fresh shitake or dried (i prefer dried as it gives more flavor) * green onions * sesame oil * light Kikkoman soy sauce * chicken stock * bok choy Note: ground pork can be bought next door, fresh BBQ pork or duck 2 doors down...and raw, peeled shrimp from another store in the area! YAY!

Date: 8/23/2015 Time: 2:15 PM 72° Sunny & warm Yuen Hop has been around for many, many years - even before I was born in 1951. They were established in 1931 - probably the oldest business in Oakland Chinatown. My parents had a Chinese grocery store on 8th Street, between Webster and Franklin Streets from September 1959 until the Summer of '72. At that time, our store was one of their clients. Almost everyday, my parents would sent my siblings and me to get their fresh noodles (at least 20 pounds), egg roll and won ton skins (3 to 5 pounds) to sell in our store and/or delivery to Chinese restaurants on the outskirts of Oakland Chinatown. I remember the fresh noodles, egg roll and won ton skins being made and the huge boxes of eggs (15 dozen box) sitting close by. Yesterday's memories of the layout of Yuen Hop are gone, such that when I entered the store, I did not recognize it anymore. I stopped in at Yuen Hop for a cold bottled water. I did not get any of their mochis...darn! Cost of a 23.7 ounce bottled water: 99¢! What a bargain! I doubt if I can get it any cheaper elsewhere. The only drawback of coming to Oakland Chinatown and businesses such as Yuen Hop is parking. It's difficult unless one parks at the Renaissance Plaza public garage. For me, it's best to use public transportation (AC Transit #51A or #20) from Alameda. I have been away from Yuen Hop far too long. There's nothing like chow mein and/or won ton soup made from fresh noodles and won ton skins. Even their produce are reasonably priced. Thus, there will be more visits to my old "stomping grounds" to browse, shop and reminisce of my past.

So many fresh noodles, tofu. I came here to buy mirin and some veggies. Everything looks fresh and way less expensive than Ranch 99.

I had prepared red envelopes to express appreciation for your hardworking staff, reflecting our long-standing business relationship. Upon arrival, I was pleased to see that your company had arranged a small buffet for employees. The warehouse staff were polite and exchanged festive greetings, creating a positive atmosphere. This reflected well on management and is worth acknowledging. However, an incident that followed severely disrupted what had been a pleasant morning. I must clearly identify that the staff member involved is the senior female employee from the back department responsible for vegetables senior lady ! This day she was standing their cut pork for customer and employee! she refused to provide proper portions to my employee, who was waiting in line appropriately. Instead, she directed her to take leftover scraps filled with excessive bone fragments. When I calmly asked for clarification, this staff member responded with a cold, impatient, and hostile attitude, demonstrating a complete lack of professionalism and basic respect. My employee feels like homeless need get her food ! I was there for one thing.....two scoops of Mitchell's ice cream (Price: $6.49). Creamy and delicious flavors. I picked chocolate and strawberry. No toppings, nothing fancy. The pistachio cream cake and ricotta and pistachio cake sound good too, so many desserts. They also have Mitchell's ice cream. Although there is a sound effect that goes off when you step in the door so the owner or staff must've known when I came in, and they also looked up when a few other people went in and out of the store, I was standing at the counter for about 5 mins before they realized I was waiting to order, so that was awkward. I realized the register is set up for grocery store and not like a restaurant so there wasn't a way to enter a tip for the drink order when paying with credit card; they only have a jar for cash tips. It says minimum $5 for credit or debit or they will charge you $0.50. The owner/employee is pretty no nonsense in demeanor. I ordered a $5 hot mocha for 16 oz. The prices are pretty good for hot drinks. For some reason, for iced drinks, which have a smaller selection, the price jumps up significantly between the 12oz and 16oz size. You can get up to 20oz size for the hot drinks. The coffee itself was pretty good, though, and I liked the amount of chocolate in it. Not bad for drinks, you just might have to try to speak up to get the owner's attention if they are busy washing dishes or not looking your way / not at the register.

The refrigerated display was fairly small while the back wall was lined with shelves of Asian snacks. The sushi section was only wide enough for three or four people, so guests frequently had to reach over one another to grab their selections. The staff at checkout were friendly and packaged everything neatly. I also appreciated that the chopsticks were noticeably higher quality than standard takeout utensils. *Tuna Avo Roll: good balance of tuna, rice, and avocado. The avocado was slightly underripe, giving the roll an overall sharper, tangier profile. The tuna had a pleasant texture, though it was a touch fishy. The rice was at its best in this roll compared to the other items I ordered. *Omakase Nigiri: an incredible value for the quality and generous portions. Each piece was topped with thick, fleshy cuts of fish. My set included three tuna, two salmon, one scallop, and one ikura nigiri. The tuna was the standout and nearly melted in my mouth. The salmon was solid but fairly standard. The rice, however, was on the firmer side with only subtle vinegar seasoning. *Salmon Aburi: the beautifully torched top looked promising but surprisingly lacked any noticeable smokiness. The salmon was over torched, leaving very little of its natural raw richness and rendering away much of its fattiness. The rice was firmer and even more bland than the rice used in the other items. I really appreciate the reasonable prices and convenient grab and go setup, but the rice needs more consistency in texture and seasoning. Perhaps the refrigerated display contributes to the firmer texture, though the seasoning also varied noticeably between the three items I tried. Fortunately, the seafood itself was fresh, well cut, and generously portioned, which was enough for me to round this up to 3.5 stars.
