I've been shopping here for cinnamon sticks to make tea. Everytime I come in they ask me to try their hot foods. So on a Saturday, I decided to try their Curry Chicken w/ rice. We chatted about how I like Curry Chicken, and the gentleman offered me a taste of his Curry Chicken. OMG, the curry flavor was so mild, it lacked any flavor. I said no thank you, and didn't try their food. I then looked over their sesame and almond cookies, and found several with expired dates. The clerk thanked me for bringing the expired products to his attention. So if you buy anything here, check the expiration dates. read more

I was disappointed with my experience at Shanvi Indian Kitchen & Grocery. The food quality was very poor and did not taste fresh or flavorful. It did not meet my expectations at all. The customer service was also disappointing--the staff was not attentive or welcoming. Overall, both the food and the service need significant improvement. The samosa is really filling. I dipped it in my chicken tikka masala sauce. Yum! I didn't like the sauce the samosa came with but that's just me personally. I really like how hot the samosa stayed - I love my food really hot temperature wise. The owner's wife (I think) gave me the lunch box special even though I came late (it is from 11am - 3pm). I was so hungry.. and desperate. LOL she was nice and made an exception for me. The chicken tikka masala flavor and sauce is so good! Veggie korma is good too. The lunch special came with rice and naan - and it pairs so gooooood with the sauce from the chicken tikka masala flavor. I've been a loyal customer of this store for a long time and have recommended it to coworkers, family, and others in Alameda. Unfortunately, I had a very uncomfortable experience today that I feel others should be aware of. Around 12:50 PM, I ordered my usual chicken plate combo and paid with my card. Although the screen showed the transaction went through, the cashier said it didn't and asked me to pay again. After paying a second time, I checked my bank statement just to be sure and saw I was charged twice, back to back. I showed the cashier clear proof of the duplicate charges, yet he insisted the first payment didn't go through and told me to call his boss instead. He kept insisting I call his boss and that he wouldn't be able to assist me then and there. Only after an awkward back-and-forth did he finally issue a refund. Weird considering he said the double charge wasn't in his system and that he couldn't help me, right? This experience left me uneasy, and I won't be returning. I strongly recommend others check their bank statements carefully to make sure they aren't charged twice. read more

Shanvi Indian Kitchen & Grocery. Their name describes it all. We stepped inside to checkout what they have to offer. We left with Samosas which by the way tasted delicious. Before purchasing the samosas, we browsed their shop. They have a good selection of groceries, and they offer more than just Indian merchandise. They have all kinds of groceries for other ethnicities including American and Asian items. Food wise, they make a lot of Indian food. Everything looked wonderful so we'll have to try their other Indian entrees next time. I noticed a sign outside promoting their Lunch Box specials. Looked like good deals to me. An Indian market, a liquor store and a restaurant? What? You walk in and immediately smell all the spices from the kitchen. Everything looks really good. We ordered a 2 entree combo meal and the mixed veggie samosas. They give you large portions and it was more than enough for 2 people. The veggie samosa is by far the best samosa I've ever had! The crust was light and flaky, the veggies were full of flavor and I'm definitely coming back for more of these! They have a variety of vegetarian and meat options, including lamb. We ordered the eggplant curry and the potato and green bean. The combo meal came with/ rice, naan and lassi. They have seatings outside and inside the building. It was a windy day so we had our lunch indoor. Everything was delicious, better than most Indian restaurants I've been to. This is the only place in Alameda I could find high-quality saffron in decent quantities. Their selection of imported canned/dried/frozen food is excellent for such a small storefront. I haven't had a chance to try their fresh food but it smelled amazing. My only real issue was the ambiance. We were meeting next door at Lemon Drop and couldn't help but follow my nose to Shanvi. The smell of Indian spices was intoxicating even after a full meal. I scurried into the store to explore what was inside. Right when you enter you find yourself in an Indian market with the kitchen straight ahead. The store runs deep and it much larger than it appears. It's a market, a kitchen and a liquor store all combined in one. The Indian food being served was fast food style with a simple menu above. We knew after drinks we were going to grab this to go for dinner. We opted for the combination meal which included a protein, veggie, plain naan, rice and a mango lassi for $20+. There was a lot to choose from. I was torn between the goat, chicken tikka masala, and lamb. If I see goat I'm ordering it! I'm a sucker for samosa so we had to order the lamb samosa which came in two large pieces for $9.99. I never had lamb samosa so I was excited for this. This was prepared fresh and it came with 2 dipping sauces. Yasssss, the sauce makes it for me. The mango lassi was the best I've had. It wasn't too sweet and had the perfect tartness. The service was friendly and efficient. I can see myself coming back for just samosas and a mango lassi if I need a quick meal. Great Indian market and even better with the recent addition of food. I think you can find everything you need here in the way of Indian staples and much more. We typically come for the pre made food, which is delicious. The chicken samosas and the veggie samosas are perfect to grab and take next door to Lemon Drop while having a drink. We have also purchased multiple dishes to take home. All really good, especially the next morning. There are picnic tables out front if you want to eat there.  Great beer, wine, spirits, and snacks selection. They close at 9 so if planning to get something to take to Lemon Drop do it before 9.So solid place. Not going to blow you away but solid. read more

I'm not an expert when it comes to Indian cuisine but I enjoyed every bit of what came with the special. I got their Shanvi Special Combo plate and you can't beat how good the food tastes for the price. Easily can feed 2 people with leftovers. Rice, 1 piece of naan, 1 samosa, chicken Tikka masala, eggplant curry, lamb-dish (sorry I can't provide the name but it's delicious), rice pudding and a cup of mango lassi. Didnt have a chance to take pictures because we dug right into the food when I got home. I havent even finished eating and I was compelled to write this review before I forgot to. Food is greasy and awful. The chicken in the chicken tikka masala tasted like some very weird substitute for chicken or else it was very old, weird texture and very mealy. Other things were very greasy, it took a couple of days to get over this pretty awful meal. read more

I had called just 15 minutes prior, and it turned out to be the same person who had confirmed the availability of the chai over the phone. However, upon arrival, he abruptly claimed it was unavailable, despite initially stating it was. Even after insisting that they could prepare another cup, he remained adamant. When I inquired about the owner, he mentioned that the owner was also unavailable. I can't help but feel that due to this being the only Indian store around, they exhibit a sense of entitlement. Good take out Indian food, pretty generous portions. They have a variety of items for omnivores and vegetarians. I saw about 6 veg options available when we stopped by today. We got a veggie combo with saag paneer and bhindi masala and it came with rice and naan. The saag and bindi were flavorful with a gentle heat. We also got goat curry which was fall off the bone delicious. They had a limited time special deal going where you get a free mango lassi with a combo purchase and it was pretty good as well. Had plenty of leftovers to make another meal. We sat outside to eat at their picnic tables and enjoyed a pleasant day. I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and Tandoori chicken drumsticks to go. They no longer serve Tandorri Chicken drumsticks. The staff at the store reached out to me to let me know and I ended up with a chicken Kabab. I liked both dishes but think that the naan could be better. The naan looks like it came from a ready made package. It would be nice if they toasted it before serving it. I am happy with this place, and would not hesitate to come back. read more

We catered a party for 25 people and they gave us food to feed way more than 25. We received tons of compliments on the food. The Samosa's were all snatched up very quickly (no surprise) and all the guests went for seconds and thirds. Working with Vik to figure out the order was easy. Great family-owned restaurant. The price was very reasonable as well. My wife and I have gotten take out from here a couple times as well and really enjoy it. A couple of friends who live in Berkeley stopped by our place (in Alameda) the other day and even asked the name of the place we catered from because they wanted to grab lunch there on their way home. :) read more

What a great addition to Alameda. You can't see my last name, but I'm 100 percent Indian. The Indian hot food is good! Very tasty and fast. I'm eating my leftovers from two days ago and it's even better the second time around. My kids ate all the chicken tikka masala. They also have a good variety of Indian groceries. It's my new go-to place for tea, crunchy snacks (Haldiram's brand), and pickle. I'll never have to go to San Leandro for my Indian stuff ever again. The owner is also nice and friendly. This is a lovely grocery store and take-out for Indian and other foods not usually found in other grocery stores. The owners, a husband and wife team with some tiny children who appear sometimes, are very personable. They have regular groceries like bread, milk, butter, eggs, potatoes, onions, frozen low-carb meals, canned soup, ketchup, etc. They also have things I needed in a pinch: 6 foot extension cord, paper plates, laundry detergent, dish soap. The take-out food is a good deal. It is a little spicy for us, so we get the rice and naan to even it out. They have many vegetarian options. There is an outside area to eat. Also, some small tables to eat inside the building. I quite enjoy this place. It is much better than the other nearby corner store. I'm not much of a cook, so the prepared Indian foods are nice to have on hand at home. read more

Ok, so this is really a one stop shop for dinner. You came come in grab some ingredients to make diner and grab a bottle of wine or you can get the food they have on the line. The veggie korma is my family's favorite. Not to mention the mango lassi is incredible! Super tasty without being overwhelming. They make their own yogurt and cheese in house. Lastly, I once came into this place and asked for help with some Indian recipes. The owner walked me all through the store to make sure I got the right spices and the proper instructions on how to prepare the dishes. There was absolutely no gate keeping. So glad we have a good neighborhood Indian food store. The hot food is just as good as any restaurant locally, and the meat dishes contain much more meat than other restaurants. And of course they have a full selection of Indian ingredients as well. The naan could be a little less doughy though. As an east Oaklander I usually have to drive to Berkeley or Fremont for proper indian groceries - so glad I found this place. Has most basic stuff including (more than Vicks anyways LOL) it's got a lot of inventory in a small space, doubles as a convenience/liquor store and middle eastern market. It's a lot when you walk in but I had fun exploring inside haha. Haven't tried the hot food yet but it smells wonderful l. We ordered catering from Shanvi Kitchen for our 35ppl party. All the food was amazing and everything was freshly made. All of the guests at our party were super happy with the taste, spice levels, and the quantity of the food. We had lots of leftovers that guest were happy to take home and eat again The owner and his wife are super friendly and helpful. They even helped making suggestions for what would be the best dishes to go with certain items. I came to visit Alameda for few days and I found this lovely hot food place. Their food was freshly made, food was so delicious. I think they had some kind of magic masala/spices that made my taste buds explode.I have never tasted such exquisite food before and I highly recommend this place to everyone. They have very good hygiene. The workers are extremely friendly and helpful. They all working very hard to make us happy.I definitely will be coming back for more food on my next trip to Alameda. This place is so bomb! We came on Christmas Eve because I saw a review of their food. I came to try their butter chicken and naan, soooo frickin good. So much flavor and pretty good size portions.
