They also recommend foods that I haven't tried yet! Mithepheap Market has all the ingredients I need when I'm making my meals. When I'm on the go, I love coming by to pick up some ready to eat foods such as papaya salad and Banh Xeo. I love how they packed the papaya salad with the roasted peanuts on the side. The Banh Xeo comes in 2 pieces and it's separated by banana leaves so it's easy to pull apart. Highly recommend this local favorite, it's such a hidden gem! read more

Small hole in the wall grocery store. I've worked close by for years and never noticed it. I went in needing some ingredients to make Cambodian beef sticks and had no idea what I was looking for. I told an employee there and he walked me down every aisle and made sure I got what I needed. I've never had such great service at a grocery store in my life. I am definitely going back. My partner was looking for a different store altogether, but got the cross street wrong. She went into what I later figured out was Mithepheap Market. She got exactly what she needed and later made us pad thai, which was deeply enjoyed. While she was at Mithepheap, someone who helped her was super nice and she was happy. She asked him what is the most delicious thing you sell that is ready to eat? He pointed her to the "amok trei" which they spell "Ah Mok Tre" or something like that. It was utterly delicious. This is a firm white fish in an utterly delicious sauce, steamed in a banana leaf. So good. Can't wait to go here myself and buy more "amok trei" for us, or even, buy some banana leaves and lemongrass and Mahrut lime leaves and galangal and try to make it at home. Mithapheap Market has been here for decades. i've been here before when it definitely was a Cambodian market. today, didn't see any Cambodian products but i didn't linger long. too cramped inside. not easy to social distance. the aisles can only fit one person at a time. store is crammed with noodles, dried products, canned/bottled eats, snacks, condiments, beverages, sauces.. the prepped eats were all Vietnamese. small print: "Bai Da Naoup Tiep", (rice & coconut), "Map Bin" (cassava & coconut) 1.59. i like the cassava one better. lady asked for 3.50. paid it. didn't want to hang around to quibble price... -no sell by date, just "Daily Time 11:30 a.m. -4:00 p.m" printed -no mention of who made this. (probably an home kitchen). parking lot is stripped narrowly, not good for SUV's. read more

Found this place during COVID19 time, Because the other international market was closed. So glad I did. They have a lot of stuff the other big markets don't have. And I love supporting small mom and pops stores. Although it's a small store, its filled with a lot of different products. And is well maintained. There is plenty of parking at the front and you will be welcomed by the lady that usually works there. They don't sell actually butcher meat items but you cam find a lot of frozen products here and fresh vegetables. All the seasoning you need and also some pre-made items. I come here often now. So as I have eluded to before one of the biggest benefits of living in the Bay Area is that you can find just about any ethnic grocery store you can imagine. In the case of the Mithepheap Market we are talking about Cambodia. As with most ethnic grocery store you will find a large amount of overlap (for here is is Chinese and Vietnamese) but there alot of Cambodian specific treasures for you to unearth. From turmeric to preserved lemons, you could spend alot of time just poking around this small but well stocked store. They also had a selection of fresh herbs that you can plant to grow your own. The prepared food here is good, and you can get a lot of canned and dry food specific to Southeast Asia. You've got to watch out for the knockoffs though. They sell sticky rice from the "Three Farmers" brand that is a rip-off version of the excellent quality Three Ladies brand. They also sell an "Apple" brand of what it's supposed to be Jasmine rice. It's not. The Apple rice has a sticky texture like Chinese or Japanese short grain. Worse, the Apple rice taste like it's been sitting on your counter for 3 days even when it's freshly cooked. We're trying to work our way through it because we hate to throw away 25 lb of rice, but it's nasty. read more

I was at King Kog getting my bike fixed and discussing lunch with the staff. One mentioned Mom's Bun Mi "next to the Cambodian market." I was craving banh mi, so figured I would kill two birds with one stone. After ordering at Mom's you walk past the laundromat and there is Mithapheap. Around for a few years now, tucked in the corner of this strip mall on the edge of Clinton and San Antonio. It is not a big market, but they pack a lot in! Also cool to have a Cambodian-focused market. I've been to Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese markets in Oakland, this was my first Cambodian. You enter on the right side, and past the fridge case with some drinks and other items is the fresh produce consisting of South East Asian veggies and fruits. After that are thin aisles with dried vegetables, another with sauces and oils, another with canned goods, one with snacks and sweets, households, and the last has kitchen items. All along the back are more refrigerator cases with drinks, frozen foods, meats, fish, and even pre-made items. Speaking of pre-made items, they have a great selection of snacks at the checkout counter. I grabbed some cassava cake and these coconut milk fritters and both are tasty (though I'm partial to the cassava cake as I really love it). I also grabbed a drink and some canned goods I'd been curious about - like minced crab in spices. If looking for size and variety, you're better heading to the larger markets a few blocks away on International. But there is plenty here to grab between the specialized produce, canned goods, spices, and premade items. Will gladly go back with more bag space and just try more. read more

We made a trip to this market after months of withdrawal from Khmer food due to the SIP. Hearing everyone around us speak Khmer instantly made my heart heavy and made me miss home. I'm so glad this store is a short drive compared to the 3,000 miles I'd have to trek to go home. This store is small and well packed with ingredients not easily found in most American markets or international stores. This store honestly reminds me of the local thai store I grew up going to in my own neighborhood. It's a type of store where the owners know their customers on a first name basis. Vegetables and fruits appear homegrown and are fresh. They also have some prepared foods in their fridges and adorning the checkout counter. We were lucky to spot the one cooler that had an abundance of fresh live crawfish priced at $8.99 a pound. What a steal! These beauties were practically little lobsters, they were huge! We were lucky to grab a few pounds before they all sold out. This store is a hidden gem in the neighborhood it resides in. Definitely worth the trip given the lack of Khmer grocery stores in the bay area. read more

They have a great selection of items, ranging from Thai to Laotian to Malaysian and on and on. I called in advance to make sure they were open and to make sure they had Kaffir lime leaves, which are hard to find, even at ranch 99. They were planning on closing a little early but were nice enough to stay until I got there, and they had everything I needed and more. I ended up buying a mortar and pestle to support them and because I needed one, though I'm sure I could have bought one slightly cheaper online somewhere. Overall, they were super helpful and nice, and it was worth the 40 minute drive from Concord. Personally, I can excuse the few moldy, fly ridden vegetables in the produce section, because hey, this isn't Whole Foods :) read more

I wanted to make Pad Thai from scratch and the only place I thought of that could possibly carry the tamarind paste I was looking for would be Mithapheap. And they do have it here which is great! I spent some more time getting lost in the aisles for my next dish inspiration. Apparently a local Cambodian lady makes custard sweets that she sells here in unmarked Tupperware. They are open later than the markets in Oakland Chinatown, so I come here if I need herbs for southeast Asian-style dishes later in the day. They have Kaffir lime leaves, hot & sweet basil, lemongrass, galangal etc. The place is not that clean (dried fish falling out of its wrapping, dusty jars, dirty floors etc.), but that's not unexpected of a small Asian market like this. Service is better than average - they can assist if you need help finding a something in the shop. They also take credit cards. They have packaged stuff from other parts of east Asia like Laoganma chili crisp, Assi instant rice noodles and Burmese pickled tea leaves, but the selection is pretty limited. On the other hand, they stock many different brands of things like fish sauce. There is not much of a selection of packaged snacks and instant food, so it's not as fun to browse here. There are drinks in the fridges and prepared foods (mostly Thai stuff like noodles and balut, though I've also seen the saddest bean & rice burritos here too) in the front. Because the prepared foods are kept out at room temperature without indication of how long they've been sitting there, though, I have never opted to try them. read more

As expected and like 70% of other small local oriental grocery stores, you will end up seeing expired items on the shelf, so you might want to pay attention. I think it was an understandable issue since the inventory turnover rate is typically slower for a store at this location and this size. Still deserve a 5-star based it's size to the variety of products ratio. I have been looking for authentic Thai seasoning and was not able to find it in those bigger oriental grocery store like 99 ranch but I was able to from this store. They also have some pre-made traditional Thai snack/dessert by the checkout counter. I tried the coconut sticky rice and it was delicious. I'm so glad I found this place!! My partner is Khmer and I find myself craving Khmer food ALL THE TIME!! And figured it was high time I try to learn to cook some myself. Berkeley Bowl was great with some of the main ingredients like galangal, ginger and turmeric but I could not for the life of me find kaffir line leaves anywhere. ANYWHERE. In the past I've gone to Battambang Market in SF but that's quite a trek. I racked my brain and searched the internet for Cambodian markets in the East Bay and found Mithepheap! They had an abundance of kaffir lime leaves right at the entrance and even had sour meat!! Not only did they have hard-to-find items but the staff and visitors alike were all so nice. The woman at the register helped me to find the right mortar and pestle and assured me it would last. I held up the line, which was pretty long, and everyone was nice enough to create an assembly line to put the mortar I wasn't buying back on the shelf. Arkoun! read more

I was hoping they would have fresh meat there but besides that I was able to get everything else I was looking for. I was ecstatic to find this place near me since I moved from Long Beach. I've been missing Khmer food and people in general. The ladies that run the shop were super nice. It is hard to navigate the aisles because it's so narrow but they had these cute little fish sauce bottles. Parking was a little hard when I went since there's other businesses in the same plaza. They also have ready to go food which I haven't tried yet but I will in the future. Overall, I'm a happy camper. If you need a Khmer market nearby I do recommend trying this place. read more

Thai basic, kaffir lime, and so many other fresh herbs (which can be frozen), dozens or hundreds of SEA spices and sauces, and best of all, the fresh prepared food - I particularly enjoyed the fish curry (amok). If you want a Southeast Asian market where the owners and staff speak fluent English and are friendly and helpful to non-Asians who know little about how to go about cooking Southeast Asian but curious to learn, this is the place to come. There are too many Asian markets, especially large, well-stocked supermarkets, that are impersonal and lack personnel that can speak English fluently. But be forewarned, it is really close to being a hole-in-the-wall, without fancy aisles, bright lighting or shopping carts on wheels. On the other hand, the upside is you might pick up some recipe ideas and inspiration to get started. Although I frequent many Asian markets every week to pick up ingredients for my Thai cooking classes (there isn't one store that carries all the ingredients I need in the freshest form I like them or that stock my favorite brands of different sauces), I come here for the most exotic, hard to find ingredients, particularly herbs and vegetables, such as holy basil, lemon basil, wild pepper leaves (bai chaploo in Thai), moringa (marum) leaves, pea eggplants, culantro, curry leaves, inexpensive baby corn, ivy gourd vines (dtam leung). fresh winged beans (tua poo), fresh cha-om and much more. The last two I listed are such special and well-loved Southeast Asian vegetables that I can find regularly during the summer only at this store in the Bay Area. During the summer, the owner, Sam, drives up to his friend's farm three to four times each month to gather up these exotic produce and, with cha-om and winged beans, they are usually gone within a few days after he returns with his precious supply. I am particularly addicted to cha-om (a kind of edible tropical acacia much loved among Thais, Cambodians, Laotians and Burmese). It's heavenly cooked with egg and eaten with nam prik (a hot-and-sour pungent dipping sauce made with top-grade fermented shrimp paste). My husband and I also love stir-frying it with eggs and bean thread noodles - makes a very satisfying lunch for us at least twice a week! I've gotten to know the owners (Sam and Yun) quite well and recommend their store to all my cooking students as THE place to go to pick up the exotic herbs and vegetables which I use in my cooking classes. If I need a large quantity of one of these exotics in an advanced cooking class, I would call Sam and make sure he lets me know as soon as he gets back from the farm. I would rush down there and pick out what I need as he is unloading them from his van. This store also carries many of the hard-to-find brands of sauces and frozen seafood products that I use for my classes and in my own cooking, such as Golden Boy fish sauce (my favorite and my students' favorite as well), klong koen kapi shrimp paste, salted crab for making green papaya salad, sadao neem flower buds, fresh-made coarsely ground toasted rice (the Vietnamese-made finely ground rice just doesn't do it for many kinds of larb and other N/E Thai meat salads), and sour fish (pla som) from Thailand - one of my very favorite foods! In addition, Sontepheap has an interesting collection of home-made Southeast Asian snacks delivered almost daily to satisfy my craving of something from home (Thailand). Of course the variety of fresh exotic herbs and vegetables are limited to the warmer months from late spring through mid-fall when the weather allows such tropical transplants to grow in California. But some herbs do get imported in from Hawaii or Florida during the colder months. So, don't expect the same exciting variety or freshness depending on what time of year you go. During the colder months, you might want to call first before trekking down there to get something specific. Because of my "addiction" (albeit a healthy one) to cha-om, winged beans, holy basil, sour fish and salted crab, even if the store has nothing else, I would give it a 5-star rating! Many of my cooking students would agree as they have become addicted to them as well. read more

This is a great little shop filled with lots and Lao and Thai groceries. I actually was looking for an Asian style broom for some relatives who were visiting and we got it here! They have some fresh prepared foods and various herbs that can be hard to come by. It's definitely packed with stuff, so you have to look around to find what you need. A small market but sure packed with many vegetables, herbs, exotic fruits and the traditional Khmer, South East Asians spices and plenty of frozen packaged internationally shipped goodness. Needless to say I was in awe of all the merchandise they carry in such a tiny store. From traditional Khmer clothing, pick nick mats and kitchen wares, a widely selections of mortar/pestle of all sizes. But of course it wouldn't be a Khmer market with out the soap operas movies/ music/ karaoke DVDs &CDs. My favorite part of all the ready cooked food and an array of Khmer desserts made by the local housewives. If your lucky, might find some fresh fruits for sale from someone's backyard. This is an Oakland treasure. If you like cooking S E Asian dishes, this store is reason enough to relocate to Oakland (there are plenty of others!) I've joked with my brother, who lives in Chiang Rai (possibly the only city in Thailand where it's difficult to find a good restaurant meal) that, with the Mithepheap Market a mile away, it's easier for me to get fresh herbs and spices for Indonesian, Thai, & Malaysian dishes than it is for him. That's probably no exaggeration. This store has a huge variety of all things to make S.E. Asian dishes. As another reviewer noted, Indonesian sambal don't seem to be stocked and neither is tempeh goreng but that's no surprise as Indonesian cuisine is not as well known here as are Thai, Vietnamese, & Laotian cuisines. read more

I live in the dumpy apartment across the street from this grocery store. I won't go into the details of my apartment, even though those details would be juicier than my review of this grocery store. This neighborhood is not the best, but it's honestly not the worst. Assuming you come here, you may find parking somewhat difficult, but if you go around the block you'll definitely find a spot and can usually get one in the parking lot. This grocery store has a wonderful selection if you are looking for any type of asian ingredients. The store owners/employees are also very kind and helpful. They also prepare little meals that you can buy as well if you need a lunch fix. We come here for their lime leaves, hot thai basil, and all of their other vegetable ingredients. The meat selection is very specific and personally not my taste, but it appears to be very traditional. They have an amazing selection of sauces/ingredients to make dishes, so what we usually do is supplement this with a stop at KP to get meat. I would definitely check this place out at least once. You'll probably find some things you aren't used to seeing and will likely come back to find them again. read more

Like mostly everything in the bay area, I am not impressed. I stopped by for a banh mi next door (also unimpressed) and decided to wander into this little market. While I noted that they have pickled carrots and daikon, some interesting little eggplant variety, and some prepared Thai food to go, I found a lot of the produce not very fresh. I guess I really needed scallions because I bought some, despite the fact they looked kinda crappy and regretted it when I got back home. The only way those things survived is that I literally made them grow again by throwing it in a jar of water. read more

I like this place because I was able to find almost all the ingredients for my green papaya salad, the most important of which was the green papaya. Our local Safeway doesn't seem to stock up on those much. I also found some palm sugar there, which made me happy. It's important to distinguish it from a Thai market because you will not find a Thai karaoke dvd or cd there, only Khmer. Its like saying india and pakistan is the same, those are fighting words. But aside from that, the people are friendly, they have a lot of southeast asian ingredients, and they take all forms of payments, including american express. read more
