A can of ackee was $17 but it came directly from Jamaica, and if you know the fruit, it needs to be ripened all the way through before harvesting to avoid being fatal. Every time I stop by this Minto's, I'm always like "Damn, I need to review this place!" So, here I am...FINALLY getting to it. Love, love, looove me some Minto's! I've been to one other location on Franklin street, but this location has actually been my go-to. I come here for the meat patties and the Big Bamboo canned Sea Moss. When I'm having a craving, I'll often drive to this market on my lunch break to get my fix. The only thing is, they don't always have the patties. It's best to call beforehand but... sometimes they don't even answer the phone. I like to just show up there anyways because I love perusing the market and grabbing random snacks. They've got all kinds of Caribbean snacks and spices. They also sell frozen patties in bulk that you can heat up for later. They switch up the meat patty flavors pretty often, so don't come here expecting to get one specific flavor. Also, this location is a market and not a juice bar or restaurant like their other locations. But, it still has a lot to offer. Service is hit or miss and really depends on who's working that day. Can't complain too much about this place considering there aren't many other dedicated Jamaican markets in the bay area. The store is really small, but it does the job. They sell patties (both uncooked and cooked (in a little toaster oven behind the counter)). The unheated ones are bagged up in random quantities, but you can request to have more or less. The patties are frozen/pre-made so don't expect it to be of homemade quality. They also sell plantains, spice buns (by the loaf and individual), canned cheese, water crackers, soap, spices, etc. Prices are steep, but if you're desperate for some specialty Jamaican items, this is the place to go. Credit card accepted. Service is OK - no greeting and the employees just mind their own business which is fine. read more

We love stopping into Jamaican Markets to check out the varieties of seasonings, marinades and ingredients. We were heading to dinner when we saw this shop and had to stop me. The store is on the smaller side, but they had a great variety of options. We saw some seasonings here that we couldn't recall from other markets. We had the chance to talk to one of the owners and learned they own a few businesses in the area. We love supporting local and it's even more fun when we get to talk with the owners and staff about their favorite ingredients, products and other places in town that we can check out. Went in to buy a Vitamalt when my partner saw some palo santo and picked up a couple sticks to buy. He rang us up and I noticed the price was outrageously high. That was when he told me each palo santo stick was $5 which is ludicrously expensive, but since I had already swiped my card he said he couldn't void the sale. I asked him if he could try and then another dude comes from the back and they both start talking at the same time explaining why they couldn't void the sale. It made no sense. I should have just walked out. Feeling like I got duped. Which is a huge bummer cause I was so happy they had Vitamalt and I'm always stoked to new local shops like this one. This is a great little find! The only place I have seen that sells scotch bonnet peppers! They have so many sauces, marinades, and spices. Plus they sell frozen and fresh beef patties. I got the chicken, beef, and vegetable. The chicken was curry flavored and was so good. It was my first time having one other than beef. The vegetable one was not my favorite and I think I will try the spinach one instead next time. The beef was excellent and I will definitely go back for more. I moved to the Bay Area from Miami Beach. I miss being able to grab Jamaican food and condiments from almost anywhere. Really love this place, they carry frozen meats (ox tail, fish, goat), veggies, and they also carry frozen patties they sell in bulk. The highlight is they also cook the patties in store and serve them daily. They usually have a few options chicken, beef, and veggie. I would arrive early 11-12 so there variety to chose from. Ordered 3 curry chicken patties. I was disappointed it was dry! It barely had any curry sauce and was expecting the crust to be flavorful but it was dry and bland. I asked the cashier what other patties they had and she said that's all they had left. The person who inquired after me, asked the same question and the cashier told her there were curry chicken and also spinach patty available. I wished I would've know that when I was ordering. I just hope it being dry was a one off. Lastly, when giving me my change, she said they ran out of quarters and gave me the blank stare. I fell in love with Jamaican patties many years ago and haven't found anywhere near by that sold them. Found this little hole in the wall gem on yelp and man was it worth the side trip to find them! They don't have a lot on hand so we bought some beef patties frozen to go. 30 minutes at 350 and these were absolutely amazing. The crust was fluffy, the filling was flavorful with a nice kick. I will definitely be coming back. $2.25 per patty! The store had lots of interesting spices but the line grew pretty quick and I wanted to try the patties so I didn't buy any thing else. I grew up in the East Coast, and these tasty pastries are available everywhere! From 7Eleven stores, to dollar stores to coffee shops! Ever since I've been on the West Coast I have not found any place that sold these. I searched and searched. Finally a FoodNetwork special that aired last week, featured Jamaican Beef Patties in Miami Florida. So after some more deep searching I came across: www.caribbeanfooddelights.com I was so happy to hear that Oakland was listed as one of their locations and guess what? Art's Jamaican Market was found! Okay, I need to calm down now.. let's talk about the business. Drove their today from Richmond, CA on a Saturday morning. Took about 23mins to get there. The beef patties were $1.90 each and if you'd like a case of 50 frozen, you can buy a case for $69.99. I would've LOVE to buy a case but my budget is a little tight right now. $1.90 is a bargain! (East Coast sells one for $0.75-$1.00 but hey, this is the only place that sells these around here). I ended up buying 5. 3 for myself and 2 for my partner. I went to Art's today to cure a little JA nostalgia, missing the island big time, and have literally been dreaming about ackee and saltfish. so, i had to acquire myself some authentic Jamaican products and via Yelp, saw this is the place to go. A $14 can of ackee, $8.50 lb. boneless salted codfish and $1 for 4 scotch bonnet peppers later, I cannot wait to make breakfast tomorrow morning. While there I picked up 1/2 dozen beef patties for $12, a couple of which I will enjoy for dinner tonight. YUM! This place is tiny, but has everything you need to make an authentic Jamaican meal to relieve any Caribbean food cravings you may suffer from. Came in just to try 2 patties during a my aunt's hospital visit. I had 1 spinach which was good but i stuffed my chicken patty between some warm coco bread. It was the beeeeeeezzzneeeeez lol. I had to come back and get that dozen for $27. The good thing about this place is that you can choose between cooked and frozen. I just went by there yesterday an now they have a .35 cents fee for using a debit or credit card. Honestly, their prices are fairly high due to lack of competition. I already have family members sending supplies in from Houston and New York but I only go during times where I need certain items. I don't know who recommended that policy but it stinks of greed and they need to be careful, the market is ripe for another Caribbean store and they could easily be undercut. read more

I wrote a review in 2010 when Minto Jamaican Market was Art's Jamaican Market. Since then Art has retired back to Jamaica and things have improved greatly. My one star then is five now. I started eating patties as a young boy in primary school in Jamaica and this is the only place in the Bay Area where I can reliably get a good patty, Matouk's pepper sauce, Milo, and D&G drinks. Whenever you go the patties are hot and ready. I just wish that Minto was in SF too. read more

I had one and went right back to buy more, the only down thing I will say is that I had to take them frozen because I came late and didn't want to wait. I have been itching to go back and get more since I shared with others. I didn't remember the name of the market, so I logged on and was shocked to see so many negative reviews. Came here Saturday morning to get bulk frozen beef patties and coconut bread. We usually go to a restaurant in PA that serves these but decided to cut out the middle man and go straight to the source. It's a very small store but very well stocked.
