My husband surprised me yesterday by bringing me to Lapeer. I had not even heard of the restaurant so on our drive there, I looked up the menu. It's a fine dining restaurant with nice seafood options. Valet parking was available, which I love. The restaurant has low lighting and a quiet, yet engaging atmosphere. Our waiter was phenomenal! Tens across the board. His recommendations were spot on. We started with the calamari. It wasn't served with a sauce and baby....it didn't need a sauce. It was perfect on its own The bread he brought out was good--very airy. I had to try the Caviar slider. It was the perfect blend of salty and crunchy. I tried the onion rings and they were delicious. My husband and the NY Strip Steak with Au Gratin Potatoes. I tried a bite of his food and it was delicious. We ended with a Pineapple Passionfruit Sorbet and it was so good! I have no criticisms. I booked Lapeer to celebrate a friend's birthday -- what should have been a special evening turned into one of the most disappointing dining experiences I've had. For a restaurant at this price point, the service was inexcusable. Our server, Chris, failed to take everyone's drink and appetizer orders before walking away from the table. We were a party of eight -- large, but hardly unmanageable. When appetizers arrived, he made no effort to confirm that every guest received their items. One of our guests had to physically track him down to report missing dishes. The food issues were just as bad. The birthday girl ordered a steak -- nearly $90 -- and it came out overcooked to the point of being burned. It had to be sent back and remade. That is simply not acceptable at this level. Another guest ordered the Lobster Pasta, which was under-seasoned, watery, and so overwhelmingly lemony it was nearly inedible. She flagged it to Chris, who took it back -- then had the audacity to include it on the final check and accuse her of eating it. It was offensive. When we raised these concerns, the manager on duty, Marshall, was condescending and dismissive rather than apologetic or solution-oriented. Our table spent roughly $1,000 that evening and left feeling disrespected. Birmingham has grown into a serious food city with high standards and plenty of options. With food and service like this, Lapeer will find it very difficult to compete. read more

My friend and me popped in on a Thursday during the happy hour time slot (5:00-6:30 pm). The HH prices are restricted to the bar area exclusively. We enjoyed our Lapeer experience at the bar. Michael, the bartender was fantastic!! He took care of us from start to finish. For starters , I had a few oysters ($2.50) and I really enjoyed the taste as well as the presentation. The sesame complimentary bread service was absolutely amazing! I planned to try the caviar slider but didn't. I definitely will the next time. The steaks here are some of the best ever!! They messed up my order originally but quickly made the correction. I really enjoyed my prime hanger steak & my friend enjoyed her prime skirt steak. The temperature of our steaks were spot on. We ordered for our sides asparagus, mashed potatoes w/t gravy and onion rings. The onions rings were the stand out of the three. The asparagus were delicious also. I didn't care for the mashed potatoes much. Skip those! The red wines I had complemented my meal nicely! The staff and the overall vibe here is top tier. I love the space and location of Lapeer. I was excited to try out Lapeer since they opened in Bham late last year. The vibe is definitely one of the highlights--cute, modern, and perfect for a special occasion. It felt like a good birthday spot aesthetically! The host was friendly as well as our waitress. She gave great drink suggestions! We started with the BACON + BLUE WEDGE SALAD & it was my fav dish of the night! It was plenty for 2 to share & was the perfect salad (and I'm not the biggest blue cheese fan). Ughhh Lapeer has done it again! My friend and I went for a friend date and we had such a great time. The service was top tier from the host to the bartender to our server. Our table was ready on time, our drinks were amazing. I've gone back after almost a year and I must say Lapeer is consistent. Our steaks were cooked perfectly and had much flavor. All of the sides were very tasty, the onion rings were crispy and salty. The bread & butter paired so well together. The shrimp toast is 100/100 I've never had anything like it, out of this world. I met a friend here for happy hour on a Thursday. At first, I was concerned about parking and was happy to find that they had valet, which made it so easy. When we got there, there wasn't a large crowd because we arrived right when they opened. The happy hour prices seemed to be restricted to the bar area, which was fine with us as we had decided to sit at the bar anyway. Michael, our bartender, was amazing and gave us some great recommendations. My friend had the oysters to start. For my drink, I had the Lady in Orange. It was easily my favorite drink. Lapeer had really great service, but I found the food was a bit hit or miss! The rolls to start were nothing short of amazing, the calamari was very good, but the mouth tingling spices were in expected, the steak also pretty good, green beans were good but nothing to write home about, and the lobster pasta wasn't it for me. Lobster maybe have been a bit over cooked & a little fishy and the dish wasn't served the hottest. However, we went for our anniversary and felt they went over the top to make us feel special. My husband and I visited for a celebration dinner one Friday night and loved this place. He said that this was arguably the best steak that he's ever paid for. (We cook a good bit at home and it's pretty fantastic ) I will agree, the steak was delicious as was anything else. We started with the carpaccio and bread. I was shocked at how good the house dinner rolls were! Normally I'm indifferent towards bread, but I would go back for the rolls and steak alone! I ordered the lobster pasta for my entree and he had the Delmonico ribeye. To share we had the whipped potatoes and broccolini. The broccolini was amazing! The ambience is romantic, industrial, and moody in the best way. Perfect for a date night! As a professional over-orderer, I went a little wild so I could try a bit of everything. Here's the breakdown: Shrimp toast - Do NOT come here without ordering this. SO good. Award-winning for a reason. 9.2/10 Calamari - Tasty, but could've used a dipping sauce. 8/10 Lobster pasta - Missed the mark for me. Tons of lobster, but overall pretty basic and bland. Very disappointing. 4/10 Steak au poivre - WOW. I didn't know skirt steak could be this tender?? Great sauce. 9/10 Sticky toffee pudding - Insane. Let's get down to business, because we came for the food. The menu is limited for me. Great if you are a steak lover, I am not. Or, if you love seafood, I cannot eat. So, what's left, burgers, chicken and veggies. Well, veggies are limited, the greats are not on menu tonight, no broccolini, snaps, or fingerling potatoes, all recommended. Gosh darn. But, you do have Onion rings! So good, with the French fry sauces. It's all girls here tonight. One of the best meals we've ever eaten!!!! We went for Valentine's Day, and because you have to have reservations, it wasn't crowded at all and there wasn't a long wait. We were seated promptly. Our server, Kevin, was very attentive and professional without being snooty. We received top notch service. Everything tasted amazing, even the bread rolls! I got an old fashioned and before I even tasted it the smell alone was amazing. We got the wedge salad, which definitely think you could share!!! My husband got the Delmonico ribeye and they cooked it to perfection. We added the horseradish sauce and pepper butter. We got potato gratin and shells and cheese as sides. Honestly, not worth the money. Beef is already expensive to begin with and if I am paying top dollar (cheapest cut is still about $50), then I would expect a more "top" experience. The service though was very attentive and I give high marks for that. There was a selection of wine and that's all that I really remember about it. It existed. Cocktails were of a classic selection. No big surprises there. The food was overall a letdown. The calamari was fine. Nothing to write home about. We pretty much all got steak and it just wasn't anything special. There was a substantial crust to the steak and it was quite salty. I love salt and I would've maybe liked it a slightly less salty than that. I've had better. We were really sold on the fries, but they weren't very good. Pretty under seasoned (all the salt went on the steak I think). The only thing unique was the amount. It was a literal mountain of fries. We also got the mushrooms and they were just okay. Lastly, we got dessert which was a sticky toffee (I thought pudding) something with ice cream but it was really just ice cream from Big Spoon which you can just get cheaper...at Big Spoon. I suppose another positive: The portions were large though so perhaps that makes up for the price. We had a lot leftover. Overall, it wasn't the worst. Definitely not the best. Went to Lapeer with some girl friends this week for an upscale Friendsmas dinner. We had reservations at 5:15 and 3 of the 4 of us were over 15 minutes late due to horrible traffic. Thankfully the manager gave us grace. The atmosphere was nice and mellow. Our server was helpful and have is insight on some of the popular dishes. I had the Lady in Orange drink, the calamari,the crispy broccolini, and the skirt steak au poivre. The drink was good but they didn't even give me a garnish. The calamari was cooked well but lacked much flavor, imo, it needs a sauce to accompany. I wasn't a fan of the broccolini, I think it's the crispy not the flavor. The steak wasn't cooked too my liking but it had a good taste. Not the best steak I've had. Most of the group had issues with items being extremely oily or extremely vinegar-y. There were no wow factors here. But I hope it's because they are so new. I'm hopeful that Lapeer Bham will find their groove. read more

I was so excited to try this new spot for annual Christmas dinner. Upon arrival I was impress with the ambiance which was very aesthetic pleasing. A great vibe for a date night! The lobby before entrance into the restaurant had a great tree for season. We started with bread which I really enjoyed. Our appetizer of French onion soup and wedge salad was very delightful. For the entrees we had the lobster pasta and whole branzino. To be honest I wasn't wowed but it was tasty. The pasta was a little overcooked. The fish was good and interesting! Wowza! So... I am not normally a big fan of the traditional steakhouse dinner. But, Lapeer is such a welcome addition to Birmingham. The dining room was much larger than I expected, there's lots of people that already knew about this spot, I think I heard their reservations are pretty full for the next month. We were seated by their lovely hosts at a table in the far back corner. They have a nice wine menu with cocktails and beer, too. A glass of wine runs about $14-20, which seems pretty standard to me. Our drinks and appetizer did take a little while to come out, but they made up for it in spades by bringing us out a couple extra sides and with a visit from the chef and owner, who were very friendly. We started off with the calamari, which was quite spicy and zesty. It was delicious, although I do wish it had a dipping sauce on the side. They followed up with the house rolls for the table, which are made by their in-house pastry chef. These were fluffy, buttery perfection. I ordered the skirt steak, which was in-cre-di-ble. The char on the outside was outstanding, and the gravy/mushroom sauce on top was so delicious. Part of me is a bit overwhelmed by the concept of ordering your steak and side/s separately, but I managed. Definitely order your sides with the intention of sharing with the table, they're generous portions. Out of the sides, the crispy broccoli situation was delicious, and the creamed corn was certainly a standout. The potatoes au gratin and mac and cheese were delicious as well. The fries hit the mark, but I'd recommend trying something else. Everything was all around 5 stars, and sadly we were stuffed very quickly. Hold on, though. Never so stuffed that I'm not gonna order that chocolate cake. It was a thick, brownie-like cake. Definitely large enough to split with up to 6 people, I'd say. My one chief complaint would be that the table wasn't big enough for all the food we ordered, haha! I believe they're working out some of the service details with their wait staff, but Lapeer is 100% earning a spot on my favorite restaurants in Birmingham list. For appetizers we had the salt and pepper calamari and crab cakes. The crab cakes were truly the star of the show! Calamari was good, but I've had better. They also had a bread service with freshly baked rolls. Yum! For my entree I ordered the branzino, which came with fingerling potatoes and asparagus. Lapeer was an amazing experience. While waiting for my friend, I sat at the bar. I had the Agava Affair. In the beginning I thought the drink was tart, but after I finished it, I liked it. The ambiance in the room is nice. They have a business casual dress code. Once my friend and I were seated, we shared the crabcakes and salt and pepper calamari. The crabcakes were delicious! Since it's a new restaurant, we were understanding, though it's something to be aware of if you're planning a visit during busy hours. Once we were seated, everything turned around. To start we tried the oysters, which were fresh and flavorful. The calamari was slightly bland but very fresh. For our entree the table shared a steak that was cooked to absolute perfection. I recently had my first dining experience at Lapeer for a private dinner, and overall it was a great experience. Complimentary valet is always a plus and made arriving super easy. The menu for the evening was thoughtfully curated. For Course 1, we had wagyu beef carpaccio with toasted sourdough, salt & pepper calamari, and jumbo shrimp cocktail--such a strong start, everything was fresh and flavorful. Course 2 was an oyster platter. It was my first time having raw oysters! They weren't bad but I don't have to have them again. Course 3 included benne seed dinner rolls and a spring mix salad, and the rolls were definitely a standout--so good! For the entrée, I chose the 7 oz filet mignon, which was cooked well and very satisfying. Sides included whipped potatoes, crispy broccolini, and cheesy shells, and the cheesy shells were easily one of my favorite parts of the night. I also had the "Lady in Orange" cocktail, which was very tasty and paired well with the meal. Dessert was the Lapeer blackout cake with house-made sea salt caramels, and I also tried the nightcap--it was like a frozen pudding version of an espresso martini and SO good. My only complaint would be the service. For a Thursday night, it was surprisingly slow, and the timing felt off--the presentation I was attending at the restaurant actually ended before the appetizers had even fully come out, which was a bit disappointing. First time visiting this restaurant ...WOW its a hidden gem in Birmingham, quite possibly the best food I've had in a while. Started with the onion rings as an appetizer delicious moved onto entrées snapper, filet mignon, crabcakes all were absolutely fantastic. The crust on the steak was amazing. Dark, modern, elegant ambiance with a nice bar inside. Attentive and knowledgeable service. The French onion soup was cheesy and delicious with plenty of onions, however I wish it had a few more croutons. Still 100% recommend to order it. It's a huge portion and they will split the soup into two bowls if you want to share. The frozen espresso martini is definitely more coffee and liquor forward than it is sweet, but the hazelnut whipped creme on top adds a delicious sweetness. The West Indies Crab Salad came with a delicious homemade hot sauce. The lobster pasta was good but not for me, as the sauce is very mild and I prefer more flavor. Their tuna entree was also decent, but I say skip everything that isn't a steak. They were out of the Wagyu when we went, so we got the ribeye which was delicious and served with a whole roasted garlic and butter of your choice. The truffle butter was delicious. They also gave us their giant blackout cake for desert which was extremely rich but amazing. We ended the night with delicious complementary homemade caramels. read more

To start with the room environment is perfect steakhouse. Low lighting, dark wood. Perfect ambiance. My biggest gripe was the service. When u are paying literally top dollar in Brimingham u best have the service to go with it. Food alone is not enough. Oops. The food took a while to arrive at the table and I do t know of it was the servers issue or the kitchen. It took over 30 mins between app and main and no apparent reason or explanation. It was not overly crowded so can't believe the kitchen was in the Weeds. If so, that does not bode well for the future. The food was solid. We had the shrimp toast which everyone loved and the steak dishes were all enjoyed. I had the shrimp and scallop risotto and the shellfish was cooked perfectly the risotto itself was al dente which was great but a little muddled in taste. After we all fished our meal the empty plates sat at our table for at least 20 minutes with no one looking to clear. We had to call our server over and request he remove our plates. Another surprise is that apparently there is no waiter assistant to help with service. For a restaurant at this price point this is unacceptable.as a result water was not timely refilled and plates just laid on the table until the server could fit it in to his car busy schedule doing everything. When you are paying at least $100/person much more is expected of service. I assume some of this is due to only recently opening but I am a firm believer that when u are opening a restaurant of this attempted caliber you need to get off on the right foot and have everything in order or you will disappoint and people will not give you a second chance. At this point not sure I will be returning. read more

This place was recommended from one of my friends. Drove in from Tuscaloosa tonight. Valet guy was great & super friendly. Ambiance was really nice. My husband and I met our friends here on a Saturday night. Although we had reservations and arrived on time, we did have to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. The restaurant was packed. Service was a bit slow. I saw a lot of reviews where people loved the bread service but the rolls were just ok to me. The stand out was the Shrimp Toast and it was delicious. I would return just for the Shrimp Toast. For our entree we split the Prime NY Strip and added buttered crab, crispy broccolini, and potato gratin. We ordered the steak medium well and it was barely medium but we didn't bother to send it back. The buttered crab did not arrive with the steak and we had to remind our server to bring it. Our table had 2 orders of the crispy broccolini, one of the orders was way overcooked and the other order was way too oily. I loved the ambiance and it was perfect for double date night. The service and the dishes outside of the Shrimp Toast could have been better. I am willing to give them another try. read more

Originating from Alpharetta, GA, Lapeer has officially opened its doors in Birmingham--just four days ago--inside the beautifully renovated Hardwick Building, right across from Rotary Trail on 1st Avenue South. As someone who lives across the street, I couldn't wait to experience what this much-anticipated restaurant would bring to our city. Let's Talk About the Elephant in the Room Yes, this is an expensive restaurant. I knew that going in, and I would place it among Birmingham's new top-tier steakhouses in terms of price point. But let me say this clearly--none compare to Lapeer in overall experience, quality, and execution. Atmosphere & Ambience The interior is modern minimalism meets classic New York steakhouse--rich woods, clean lines, and refined furniture. What immediately impressed me was the noise level. Despite the full house, the atmosphere remained comfortably lively without being loud--a rare treat in today's dining world. Service & Drinks Our server--whose name I wish I had remembered--was an absolute gem. She wasn't even supposed to be serving that evening but stepped in to help with the opening. She was gracious, attentive, and effortlessly classy, striking the perfect balance between engaging and giving space--a true professional. The bar program deserves equal praise. It's extremely well-stocked, and the bartender clearly knows their craft. My Belvedere Vodka Martini, muddled and served with blue cheese-stuffed olives, was spot on. My daughter's seasonal Manhattan and her frozen espresso martini were both beautifully crafted and equally delicious. Starters & Salads While I don't personally eat oysters, my daughter does--and she's had them all over the world. Her words: "These are the best oysters I've ever had." That's high praise coming from her. The beef carpaccio was another highlight. Served with toasted, grilled bread, it was perfectly seasoned and elegantly presented. The Wedge Salad, while fresh and crisp, leaned a bit heavy on the dressing and vinegar for our tastes. My wife ordered the French Onion Soup and declared it one of the best she's ever had--rich, flavorful, and deeply satisfying. The Main Event I ordered the Delmonico 16oz ribeye, cooked medium rare plus. Folks, this was no contest--the best steak I've had in years, anywhere. My daughter and I split it, and we still had leftovers (which made an incredible breakfast the next morning alongside eggs). I also added a lobster tail, served with a luscious cream butter sauce, and it was outstanding--sweet, tender, and a perfect complement to the steak. For sides, we shared broccolini, which was plentiful and flavorful enough that I happily took the rest home for dinner the next night. Dessert -- The Grand Finale Just when I thought the evening couldn't get any better, the seven-layer chocolate cake arrived. Simply put, it was the belle of the ball. The best chocolate cake I've ever had, period. (And I did not need to discover that, considering I'm usually watching my diet!) Final Thoughts Was it expensive? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely. One of the best places we've eaten at in the Birmingham area. We went for my husband's birthday. We had the seafood tower and Delmonico ribeye. They were both delicious. Everything was amazing from the service to the food. We will definitely be back! read more
