The overall restaurant felt rustic and honey (minus chill because the restaurant was a little chilly where we were sitting). Our server was attentive, welcoming, and patient. The Salted Caramel Martini was delicious, creamy, caramel-y, and smooth. The wine menu could include more sweet wines because we were recommended the Rosé for something sweet. Now the food, overall, I'd give the food 4 stars because the Bouef Bourguignon was full of flavor, beef was tender, sauce was seasoned quite well. My partner had the Coq au Vin, which was more on the lightly seasoned spectrum compared to the beef dish. If you're more into lightly seasoned dish, I'd go with this one. Really good, classic, homie French food tucked in the corner of a shopping center in Germantown. French onion soup had a very nice broth that was light on salt. Beef bourguignon had quality ingredients that really highlighted the beef and the rich red wine sauce. It was a little quiet for lunch, but I came on a Tuesday. I hear nights and weekends draw a bigger crowd, which makes sense because you really need to take your time and enjoy the delicious meal while savoring the music and ambiance. We returned for a second visit with high expectations...... In summary, I'm grateful that Laperaux is located in nearby Germantown, MD, but suspect it is underappreciated as a result. Food: Fabulous! Camembert in pastry, steak fries, lamb double chips, chocolate mousse, creme brulee and espresso totaled $134.09. Enough to take home for another meal. Presented artistically and authentically. See photos. Given high quality ingredients and artistic presentation it is clear Laperaux is a gourmet experience. Greg, the chef/owner visited our table more than once. He presented us with a complimentary digestif which we sadly had to decline due to being sober. We went there for a Saturday lunch. The restaurant located in a shopping center. This is a traditional French restaurant. We love the decoration as soon as we stepped in. The food is great. We ordered the duck leg confit and beef bourguignon. Flavorful, but balanced. You can taste each ingredients find its way to contribute to the course without overriding others. Truly enjoyable. First time diners won't be second time diners. I decided to try out this French restaurant as I've had a hankering for some classics since Mon Ami Gabi is closed for renovations and they had a restaurant week menu. I made a reservation for 5:30pm on Friday, September 13th and when I arrived there was only one other table seated (on the patio). My friend and I sat inside and shared that it was our first time and that we had come specifically for the Restaurant Week menu. They had no menus printed. The waitress, while seeming well meaning, was woefully out of her depth and didn't know how to work the iPad device for ordering. As for food: the French Onion Soup was right on the money. Steak Frites were well seasoned, but the meat was overly fatty. Friend got the Croque Monsieur and it came with surprise dijon all over the bread (this was an open face sandwich that was about 80% bread). Desserts were better -- her creme brûlée had wonderful presentation and my chocolate mousse had some interesting hazelnut (?) syrup in it that would have been more enjoyable if not buried under an inch and a half of whipped cream. If we did come back, it would be to sit in the bar which appeared adorable with little cafe tables. There was also a pianist who set up about an hour after we arrived. Our first time there it's was quiet at first and we got a booth seat. There was one wait staff but gradually it got crowded and busy, I had the restaurant week menu onion soup, branzino and chocolate mousse. The soup tasted great not overly salty like other place more locally prepraed stock. The branzino had a great char and the lemon caper was refreshing. The chocolate mousse was good but it tasted like it sat in the cup for some time it was liquidy at the bottom, weird consistency. The steak frite was also excellent it was well executed. read more

All these people giving 4-5 stars have never been to a real French bistro. This was our second visit two years later since their opening and we were reminded as to why we never came back. Much different than when we first came. Walk in on a Friday night at 8:30pm. Place is pretty empty so we think no problem getting seated and order especially with the amount of people working in the kitchen and front of house. Boy were we wrong. Took forever to get our order in and forever for our food to come out. And when the food finally came out. Mid all around. Gourges - these were actually good. You get four small gourges. Pork belly- not sure what we expected here. We are still scratching our head what French dish this was inspired from. Slab of pork belly maybe broiled or sour vide. Fat wasn't really rendered. Really tender and fatty. Steak tartare - ok. Texture wise two soft and smooth and whipped. Pray we don't get sick off this of it. Lyonnaise salad. This is our favorite salad and we have it everywhere and every time it's on a menu. This sir, was not a lyonnaise salad. The lardon on this dish was the pork belly in the previous dish except it had been dried out and refrigerated, hard as a rock and inedible. The dressing was bland and non existent. Two bland poached eggs. And don't even get me started on the so called croutons which were really the toasties for the tartare. Steak frites- we ended up with steak au poivre with frites. Not what we ordered but we ate it and at least it was cooked medium rare. Service was ok. Kid was nice but kitchen was slow and server was at the will of the slow kitchen. Was invited here for a mastermind/networking event. I certainly wouldn't have found myself way up here under the other circumstances and it's an hour and 15 minutes from my house. I was a little annoyed having committed to come here but I'm glad I did. I enjoyed the food and I didn't think I would. I don't particularly care for French cuisine. We had a prefix menu and our choice of drinks from a nicely stocked bar. I had a SIDECAR (or two) $15 apiece. We had a side salad appetizer and a choice of one of these three dishes: + Beef tips in red wine reduction sauce, pearl onions, mushroom, carrots with whipped potatoes + Chicken scallopini + Orecchetti Pasta I chose the beef tips. The beef was well seasoned the pearl onions and carrots were crisp and not mushy and the whipped potatoes were very flavorful. They will whipped so successfully you could barely feel them on your tongue. I was pleasantly surprised with the depth and flavor profile on these dishes. I was able to taste a bit of the pasta. Again, very flavorful and not undercooked/al dente. Plates were small and I wish I had more food after finishing, esp for $25. If it weren't so far away I'm sure I would probably come back because it really is a very nice restaurant. Hardwood floors with an "old world" appeal. Apparently it was awarded best in Germantown. Glad I came to this event today, because I really wasn't intending to especially since it was raining. There's a strip mall behind this place and it sits at the end of a residential neighborhood. Wow! Where do I start? This was our first time at Laperaux after in living Germantown for four years. To us this was a classic French bistro in every sense of the word. The food was very classic French style and elite service. The owner and executive chef greeted us at the door. For the next hour and a half we were transported to Bourdeaux! I have to say I gave it four stars but they need to go lighter on the salt. Everything was just way too salty. We started off with onion soup and shrimp bisque. The onion soup did not have enough salt, but the shrimp bisque was so salty that when we combined the two together, it made For a great soup. Both together balanced everything out. The Bread and honey butter were a nice starter. We ordered the nicoise salad. It was very pricey, but beautifully presented and tasty. I ordered the peppercorn steak, medium rare and my fiancé ordered the berry steak, which is the special with a mushroom demiglaze. We also ordered french fries on the side. The Peppercorn steak was very tough and overcooked. The spinach was covered in salt. I did send it back and requested the filet mignon with the peppercorn sauce and to please go light on the salt. The berry steak was very tender, but it still was salty as well. I do feel the Chef who was preparing the food should've tried things before sending it out. The owner was not there as per our waiters report. Our WAiter was wonderful. The staff were wonderful. The ambience is great and that's why we gave it four stars. I came here with high hopes as I had been craving some French cuisine. I left with mixed feelings. Both of of our dishes (duck confit and beouf bourgiugnon) were oversalted to the point I couldn't taste much else. They were cooked to the perfect tenderness, but flavor was lacking. We had the crème brûlée for desert. The flavor was definitely there but the custard was broken. Could've just been an off day and the menu has potential. Hubby and I have dined here once before. Food was pretty good and the waiter was seasoned and great personality. We came this time to support our local high school's theatre program which was having a fundraiser here as well as having some of their cast sing some songs from their upcoming musical. Our waitress tonight seemed new, as evident my her having to ask us to repeat what we were ordering and then forgetting my drink order. We also found it unusual that the chef/owner was serving us our bread. But, different from some other reviewers, he was very nice and courteous. We started with the grilled octopus, which was well seasoned and charred. The shrimp bisque was tasty, but rather thick and could've used more salt. My cocktail (when it finally came after I asked the waitress when it hadn't arrived by the time our appetizers had arrived. And she had to ask (again) what I ordered (it didn't seem like she put it on her iPad. Hubby and I split the beouff bouginion (how do u spell that?). The meat was tender and tasty, but could use more salt and pepper. The profiteroles were nice and delicate, served with vanilla ice cream in them. I really hope this restaurant makes it. I had a wonderful dinner here with my husband about a month ago. The owner immediately welcomed us and made us feel right at home. His son was working the host stand and was extremely professional despite only being a young teen. We brought a nice bottle of wine with us to drink with our meal. I wish the server was a bit more knowledgeable about how to handle wines. We had universal wine glasses on our table but our bold red could've used larger glasses. I saw them on other tables so I know the restaurant has them. She then re-corked our wine for us instead of leaving it open to breathe. About halfway through the meal we were offered a wine holder to keep the bottle from getting too warm. Aside from the wine, I loved our meal. Service could've been a bit faster but the owner acknowledged it and didn't charge us the corking fee as an apology. Honestly, the wait wasn't that bad and it was very sweet of them to apologize at least three times. I appreciate when a place acknowledges when things could be better. That's how improvement happens! The food was top notch and the setting was cozy and casual. One thing with the French onion soup - they had used some of the inner layers of the onion that still have the outer layer brown skin on them in the soup, causing some bits to be inedible. On the bright side, I knew it was made fresh! The rest of it was great. My chicken dish was delicious and filling. My husband really enjoyed his beef tartare. We've been dining here for years, a friendly and family owned restaurant. Greg is a fantastic chef and his kitchen staff create delicious dishes. Tonight we enjoyed starting with pork belly, escargot, French onion soup, and green salad. Our entrees included Black Angus strip steak grilled to a perfect medium rare, Boeuf Bourguignon, and Coquilles St Jacques. The meats were tender and flavorful and the sea scallops were delightfully sweet. The portions remain plentiful that we forgot to save room for dessert. Always wonderful to be greeted by Chef Greg. We would have given 5 stars - as the menu is wonderful. We did let Greg know we had a few hiccups with table service - new wait staff being trained and a new ordering system. We look forward to our next visit and hopefully the table service and new ordering system wrinkles will be ironed out. read more

After hearing a lot about how this restaurant has touched the local community, I had to visit. My wife and I showed up on a random week night and the place was packed. Luckily we were able to get a seat in the back next to the piano. The bartender mixing drinks helped serve the tables in the back of the restaurant. The fairly priced Beaujolais hit the spot and it took us maybe 5 minutes to peruse through the menu. I understood the head Chefs assignment with opening this restaurant. You get the feeling of passion project with the way the menu was laid out. If Julia Child had a home style French top 20. This menu had them. We decided to try 3-4 apps and small plates. With one recommendation from the waiter. Scallops- seemed different from what my friends described before. I love onions and this version was more of a ceviche style. I was expecting a very sweet raw scallop when I ordered. The presentation gave me Latin American ceviche vibes. However, the citrus was light and the sweetness of the scallop was able to shine through. I love onions and gladly ate my wife's as she moved them to the side. Frog Legs- two nice sized sets of frog legs. A very small touch of lemon and the breading of these legs was perfect. We really didn't try the two sauces. The legs by themselves were good. Escargot- Another surprise with presentation. Helix snails not in the shell but propped nicely on a pastry like vessel. A safe bet for local palates without being too much of a buttery love fest. Onion soup- I love French onion soup and this did not disappoint. The execution of cooking vegetables was on point throughout the night. Steak Frites- recommended by friends, the waiter, Wife wanted duck fat fries.... I can see this being an initial high order. It is so good that many will be repeating the order next time. Rainbow trout- Fish was great, carrots and potatoes were amazing. I would have liked to try puréed potatoes with the trout. Still on a French puréed obsession after my last visit to Robuchons. This was a great place for a date night! It's in a larger shopping complex so there was plenty of parking but when you're inside, it has an intimate but still overall casual feel. They gave bread and butter with honey when we sat down, and their Shrimp Persil was delicious. We both got a wine based on our servers recommendations that we really enjoyed as well. The actual entree was also tasty, I got the Ratatouille which came with a pastry on top and it was just the right size so I could finish it up without needing a box. My fiance got the Duck Breast and enjoyed his meal as well. The highlight however was the dessert, we got the creme brulee and it was probably the best creme brulee I've had in a while. I'm positive I have created at least one review of us going here. But 5 stars, across the board. The ambiance makes my husband and I feel as though we have been transported back to Lyon France. They hire gentle entertainment a couple of evenings through the week. The lighting is warm and inviting. The service is the most phenomenal, attention to detail, welcoming and the most pleasant staff my husband and I have experienced in the DMV. they take the time to suggest, accommodate and cater to your dining experience. Truly the best garnish to any dish is the company. A nice little sprinkle to that is that the head chef, the owner himself, will every now and then make an appearance and tries his best to invite everyone, a genuine welcoming person. The food. It never seems to fail. I've had octopus here before and they cook it so tender and crispy to perfection which I believe is a good trade mark of their seafood skills, which I am biased to. Their mussels were aromatic, saucy, not a single one was grainy with sand. The frites are the best fries on the area and I will argue with anyone about it. The drinks are super refreshing offering such a wonderful pairing to a very amazing dish. The steaks are literally perfection. If you want a proper steak please come here. Review for Valentine's Day: Came for a reservation on Valentine's Day and would like to try this place on a day where it wasn't as busy and order off menu. In short, I wasn't impressed. The timing of the food was very off not only for my table but tables around us. No shame on our server, but he never cleared our table of the wine glasses, menus, extra water cups, and plates/silverware nor our finished plates. I know it was Valentine's Day so we know it was busy and still tipped well, but they had extra staff who could have refilled empty water glasses, removed things off the table (ie. the adorable young middle or high schoolers who looked dapper for the evening to help work). Around 7pm, one of the ladies had to go around to all the tables to collect more menus. That poor hostess looked so tired! The food was okay. I couldn't say anything stood out and everything came at weird timing. We got our amuse bouche real fast, as they were pumping out everything quickly. It took some time for our starter to arrive but once our server took our order for our main, a minute later we had our lamb and pasta which was cold - ugh bummer! Without even finishing our escargots we had to juggle between four dishes, so we had six plates in front of us (bread plate, starter, entree) not to mention our plates of salmon crudo to the side with four wine glasses, four water cups, and two martini glasses. Later, we ordered a beer which we kind of regret because our server was probably in a rush but gave us half a glass with a ton of head. Don't forget two more plates for dessert, topping us off at 10 plates and 11 cups by the end. One other thing that bugged me was the spacing of the tables in the bar area. All the staff kept walking in between tables bumping into customer chairs. One lady spilled her shrimp bisque on her red sweater. The vibe was okay but the impression I got was you just went there for dinner, nothing impressive but you're in and out with tons of stuff on your table and some often chair bumping. A great date night with my wife here. Service was friendly, prompt, and most importantly welcoming. The chef greeted us and made a nice comment as he walked by. No one knew us and they made us feel like regulars (one of our favorite traits in a restaurant). I had the Chicken Scaloppine and my wife had a delicious Bronzino dish, followed up by a perfect Creme Brûlée. Such a yummy dinner. We came here on a date night before a movie at the Kentlands. The food was so yummy. The complimentary bread was just ok, (a little dry) but I loved the honey butter. My French Martini was strong and super flavorful with the raspberry flavor really coming out. I loved my steak frites. The steak was buttery and had a lovely crust on the outside. The frites has some crisp ones and some soft ones. I loved the variety. They sipped up some of the butter from the steak making them super unctuous. Hubby had the duck. He gave me a bite and it was so tender. Very melt in your mouth. He said he doesn't like beans very much but if he had to eat beans he'd want to eat these that came with the meal. When asked about the carrots and how they were cooked he responded, "Very well." Lol. The ambiance isn't really a draw. It's a strip mall shopping center that's a little dated, but they make the most of it. The seating on the side away from the center is probably cute when it's nicer out and not the middle of winter. Ate here tonight. The food was fine but the service was the worst I have experienced at a restaurant. We were completely ignored by our server. I had to get up and retrieve our drinks from the bar as they were never brought to our table. Drinks were never refilled, and the server did not stop by our table at all. When it came time to pay, I had to walk to the front to retrieve our server as he was chatting with coworkers. The whole time the restaurant was dead. Decided on a whim to try a new place this weekend. While Laperaux has been opened for over a year, it was my first time here. I went with my wife and we had a marvelous lunch date. We started with the Camembert pastry and it was devine. The cheese and strawberry melted inside the puff flaky pastry was a hit. Next we each had a soup starter. My wife had the shrimp bisque which was creamy with plenty of shrimp. I had a crock of the Onion Soup Gratinee that was cheesy and delicious. Since it was lunch, we split the Bercy Steak as an entree. The steak was cooked to medium temperature, topped with a peppercorn sauce. It was accompanied by mashed potatoes, asparagus, and sliced portobellos. We ate everything off the plate as all of our food was very good. The service was a little slow, but we had time so we did not mind it too much. The chef/proprietor came by our table twice to check on us and chat. This review hurts to write. I've enjoyed my first two visits to Laperaux when they first opened. I really had a poor experience tonight while wanting to treat my family to a nice meal. The octopus came out dry and charred, the steak frites quality was poor, the milk served to my son was sour. They did bring a new octopus but it was just not what we had a year or two ago. I couldn't believe that the place I talked up was letting us down. The French onion soup and bottle of wine was nice. My wife did enjoy her mussels. The food was horrible. For my entree, I ordered the Coquille St. Jacques, which should have been five scallops baked lovingly in mashed potatoes with a breadcrumb topping. Would've received 4 stars if it weren't for two issues: 1. Rice pilaf from the Duck Breast entree tasted more like Minute Rice/pre-seasoned boxed rice, but the duck was very good. 2. Service was slow. read more

We were seated by a gentleman who turned out to be the other server in the restaurant. We weren't given menus nor water. Our waitress came by to take our order and obviously we couldn't since we didn't know what they served. She seemed new and nervous as she wasn't sure if she should take our drink order separately from our meal. She brought out a "bread" basket which had hard crouton like baguette slices that you really couldn't eat without tearing apart the roof of your mouth. Our meals were delicious though the vegetables and potatoes needed seasoning. The martinis from the bar were perfect. All in all not a bad place. It still seems they are working out some kinks. I'd like to check out the bar some evening or when they have the piano player. read more

Very impressed and happy to have a French restaurant now in Germantown. The space was truly transformed, feeling very open and inviting. You can watch the chef hard at work from your table!
