Severely disappointed by this experience. I had made a reservation weeks in advance and upon our arrival to Lapop, we had discovered earlier on that they had overbooked and they had us wait to figure out where to seat us even though we had booked a time weeks in advance. We waited for 20 minutes which to me didn't make sense considering we had a reservation. I had done my research ahead of time and knew that Lapop had a separate menu from lapis. When I asked a waitress if we could get that separate menu she had told me that that didn't exist. We had gone solely because of the drinks and when the waitress found out that we weren't gonna order any food from the kitchen from lapis she gave us attitude and the service was pretty poor for the rest of the night. read more

Underground and in the basement of Lapis, Lapop is a vibe. Tuesday is vinyl night and you can bring any record to play for the crowd. The food is flavorful and made to share with others. This is a swanky bar+ dinner location tucked in Adams Morgan. There is street parking but add extra time to circle around and find parking. Make a reservation ahead of time, which drops one month out. From start to finish, the food was delicious! Just one important note when coming to Lapop-- get the drink with the flower in it (photo attached)!! It has mezcal in it but couldn't tell you what it was called because I didn't order it lol. It was delicious and strong. They say this place is a bar/coffee shop. It's located in Adams Morgan on the bottom floor of Lapis. It's a cozy spot with lots of space. We walked right up to the bar on a Thursday night. We did order their small samosa like dish and whatever sauce came with it was so so good. It gives me hope that the other dishes are probably delicious too. I'll check it out the next time I come. Our server, Brett ( I think) was very friendly and attentive. Thank you! I've been hearing the rave about Lapis and Lapop for some time now and was so excited to check it out. We came here for dessert and drinks after dinner and were pleasantly surprised with the moody atmosphere. We were seated an ordered drinks from their menu. Great to note you are able to order anything on their Lapis menu while at Lapop - there is simply a curtain that separates you from the restaurant! To eat, I tried the Phirnee, a delicious sweet pudding made with ground rice and topped with nuts. Being very familiar with the Indian version of this dessert, I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty it was. Smooth texture, nutty, and perfectly sweet! Highly recommend checking out Lapop! Along Columbia Road NW in Columbia Heights is a basement bar with vibes. With a two bars and several rooms with tables, vinyl records and books decorate the shelves. My friend and I grabbed two seats at the bar easily on a Wednesday evening around 8 pm. Then bartender was attentive yet chill. The menu is fascinating with a wide range of cocktails, beer, and wine. It's unique but you'll notice the focus on flavors like vanilla and cardamom in many drinks. Enjoying more sweet and sour drinks, the bartender recommended the Buz-Kishi Sour and the Babur Gardens. I ordered both and found both unexpected, unique, and refreshing. My friend enjoying stiff and bitter drinks, he didn't love the Herati Western or the Qabooli Old Fashion. Both seemed unbalanced and a little off with the latter being too sweet. Five stars for everything else from service to space. read more

The review I am offering today is solely for the lounge/underground bar and music venue portion of the restaurant. With that said, I have to offer a disfavorable review as I was there to see a show that was set to start at 9:00 p.m. However, it did not begin until approximately 10:30 p.m. There are many points at which I considered leaving; something I would have done, if the tickets did not cost a significant amount of cash, as do the drinks as well. Likewise, as I don't live close to the venue I felt as if I could not justify the trip unless I stayed around to witness the performance. The performance was okay but not spectacular. Likewise I found the venue quite confusing in that it was neither a music venue nor a nightclub. It was too loud to actually carry on with a conversation and hang out, but likewise, it was not a nightclub in which dancing and fashionably reckless alcoholism could ensue. While decent in taste and execution, I would also say the drinks do not carry the level of value one would expect given their price tag. I will say, however, that the service is exceptional. Lots of attentive staff and I found the hosts and waitstaff to be very friendly. read more

The only reason I'm adding the second star is for the quality of the drink. However, the service was horrendous. Your female bartender had a horrible attitude, and we were so insanely excited to check out the vibe of this place. However, despite planning to be here for over two hours until our reservation at Lapis, we ended up leaving after only one hour. We saw a new bartender after our dinner, so we planned to try and get another drink. However, despite being open for another 30 minutes, they said they wouldn't serve us. We exited back out Lapis and were told by a server that they just choose when they're going to close early. I came here for a friend's DJ set and was instantly wowed by the ambiance. The space is trendy, yet warm and inviting. I am hoping I can update this review upon another visit, but I have to say that frankly the bar service was subpar. The bartenders themselves were very generous, but they seemed confused about tabs and it took me a very long time to close out as they had their hands full between taking and fulfilling new orders. My friends and I came just to chill for a bit and have a couple drinks. We were lucky enough to get a table as a walk-in. The drinks were tasty, sure, and we didn't order food. But the reason I'm deducting a star is that the service was not warm at all. When we said we weren't ordering food, they went cold on us almost immediately. They quickly cleaned up our table of our plates and table settings and took all menus, including the drink menus. They also never checked on us, and it was hard to get a server's attention to our table. I don't think we'd come back, or maybe we'd just try and get a table at Lapis instead. read more

Between the time it took for the waiter to get us menus, take our order, and bring the drinks, it was over an hour before we got our first round of drinks. The service didn't get any better from there. It was upsetting to say the least when we got the bill with a mandatory service charge of 20% - despite the terrible service we received. What a quaint cafe. I had never been here before and it's such a vibe. The decor was nice and it's a great place to read, study, or just meet up with friends to chat. I am so glad that I found this place! I love the restaurant Lapis and I have been a number of times. I had no idea they had such a cool space to hang out in downstairs called La Pop!! It reminds me of a boho chic lounge space that serves up coffee, tea, pastries, etc. However, if you are hungry you can order food from the restaurant Lapis (upstairs) and they will just bring it downstairs to you. There are lounge chairs, multiple couches, a bar and tables so there are plenty of places to sit. But it does get packed depending on the time of day. Also, they have a DJ on certain nights!! Such a low key coffee shop (good coffee too). Love it, it's located on the basement of the restaurant. It has very comfy seating, many tables to study and books to read on. They play classical music with I think is perfect and soothing when I really need to focus. On the basement you will find both the bar area and coffee station. An adorable basement bar and coffee shop that is affiliated with the neighboring restaurant, Lapis. They serve appetizers from the same menu and they are AMAZING. Their craft cocktails are worth the hype - seriously. Cannot wait to come back when they have the in-house DJ spinning! Also the place is much bigger than you would imagine, they have two separate rooms - although both are not always staffed they are available for seating. Thai is a really cute spot! I never noticed it, but my friend wanted to check it out for brunch. There's plenty of seating and it's not overcrowded. They had tons of vegetarian options but I opted for the salad and side of naan. I also got some ginger tea which the cashier suggested for my sore throat. It was very strong but helpful. The salad was extremely tasty. Only bad thing is that they never brought out my naan and chutney side and I had to go to the counter twice to ask about it. This is Afghan cafe is tucked away underneath its partner restaurant Lapis. The decor is super cool, middle eastern hipster vibes all around! The service is fantastic because the baristas are all very nice and they're very passionate about the cafe too. I recommend coming here to get a coffee with friends or doing work here (free WiFi!). The coffee isn't your average commercial bulk coffee either, definitely has a good kick of caffeine and tastes great. During nights, the bar adjacent to the coffee counter is open too! I've been in and out of D.C. for seven years now and after recently moving to the neighborhood I stumbled upon La Pop while walking by and saw their sign that mentioned something along the lines of it being a cultural cafe. I was intrigued and decided to look them up on Instagram and after realizing they were fairly new I went in (well, down) for a visit. First off, being someone that frequents cafes 5-6 times a week i'm used to trading off either good coffee for atmosphere or vise versa and this place has it all. Also, it wasn't crowded and it felt like the type of place you could settle in and write or read for hours. The staff was lovely and a gentleman that worked upstairs came by and showed me the menu for their sister restaurant, Lapis. In short, La Pop feels like the new best kept secret of admo that I can't wait to share with people. Thank you to the owners to opening up such a beautiful and welcoming space :) read more

The staff are incredibly rude and condescending, and I just can't figure out what the hours are. Lovvvvving the Friday night happy hour vibes here - and by that I don't mean your typical happy hour. Chill basement bookstore coffee shop vibes with solid alt r&b tunes on the stereo and bartenders who actually engage and chat with you, as if you're visiting them instead of the establishment. I enjoyed the gin and vodka cocktails - tart and refreshing and well crafted - along with the fries. Oooh, the fries. Big basket of perfection and delicious dipping sauce. It's a must. The veg pakoras were meh - the side sauces were good but otherwise a pass for me. I used to love this place -- cool atmosphere, great service (barista always remembered me and my roommate). I would have rated it five stars because it was such a great weekend alternative to all the 18th street coffee shops that don't allow laptops on the weekend (and Starbucks, which has terrible service and allows non-patrons to linger around and take up all the seating). I was a regular but stopped going to La Pop a few weeks ago because frankly, it was a little too expensive and they never had seating. I decided to give it a shot again today since the place I started going to was also crowded. The good thing is they've decided to open up more seating on the weekends, which is great since it seems like more and more of the brunch crowd from Lapis is coming down ( I never ordered brunch from upstairs so can't speak to that). The bad thing is now the service is awful. I ended up paying $6 for an iced coffee no one could find a cup for -- either for their or to-go. The guy ended up putting it in some sort of weird cocktail glass that was probably a good 4 ounces smaller than any coffee glass would have been. It would have been one thing if there was just one new employee training but the cashier, who did not even offer me a pen to sign my receipt, seemed just as clueless. My advice to management is to please bring back better staff (like Kenya!) on the weekends. My advice to patrons is to ust go to Pitango upstairs -- it's roughly the same price if not cheaper and the service is much better (they also have a drink rewards program so there's a benefit to going regularly). read more
