I don't normally leave reviews, but I created an account to do so because I was blown away with the outstanding service from Donna. I brought in my older model Lincoln sedan for an intermittent battery indicator light and a sudden noisy engine. I picked Larry Ng for the location, the reviews, and the fact they were open on Saturdays. I dropped the car off Friday afternoon. Before they closed on Friday Donna texted me that tehy had already diagnosed the noisy engine as a loose exhaust bracket that just needed new bolts. By Saturday morning Donna texted again that the car would need a replacement alternator. Everything was fixed by end of the day on Saturday. Since I wasn't able to pick it up right away, Donna offered to meet me there on Sunday -- even though they were closed!! I have never had this level of personalized service from a mechanic. EDITED 4/26/2021 This place seems to be closed either temporarily or permanently, though the self-service gas pump is still operating. Office and garage are closed, there is a "closed" sign on the window, but no other explanation. The phone is not answered and the voicemail box is full. Covid pandemic casualty, perhaps? Crappy way of doing business, at least have a phone message announcement alerting customers that you are closed---would have saved me a 22 minute drive. For those of you who complained about this place, I have no idea what you guys talking about. Donna is knowledgeable and flexible. I visited her twice, first is for Break pads were down to the metal, and damaged the rear rotors. This place only charged me $500 while others charged me $800+. Second time, was last week my dial was showing yellow engine sign, I immediately stopped by, and she appeared even before their business hours, reset everything, and helped me identified the problems, and explained potential problems could caused further damages, and provided solutions. Price also unexpectedly lower than shops outside. Definitely recommend this place! read more

A day full of errands preceding a long drive was the worst time for my tire pressure to drop. I pumped them up but they dropped again. Must be a puncture, but I couldn't find it. I had trepidation about waiting in a long line somewhere. Drove through Larry Ng's. Despite the garage being full, they asked me to just pull in front. I drive a Tesla, so it's not a simple mechanical key. No problem. Spent 20 minutes getting lunch nearby and got a text that I was all set. A week later, the tire is still great. Larry has been my mechanic for 3 years, and my family's for many more than that. So, I'll make the trek from Somerville to Wellesley to have him service my cars. Why? He's honest and doesn't fuck up. Recent Case in Point: Last month, had my oil changed by another place, closer to work, and the guy told me I needed new front brakes and shocks, to the tune of around $600. I was shocked and appalled since I;'d just bought this car a month prior, and Larry checked it out first and gave it his seal of a approval. Said shitty mechanic didn't even reset my maintenance needed light, so I had Larry assess the brake/shock situation. He told me this other dude was crazy and everything was fine with my car. I have been going to Larry's for 23 yrs but today that all changed. Repair quote was $300 more than Herb Chambers dealership (Larry's was after market, Herb was factory parts and it was still $300 difference). Since Larry left, they have added a $50 charge for "diagnostics." Never had seen anything like that in the last 23 yrs while Larry was running the show. FYI, they no longer do state inspections anymore. Finally, was told on the phone that it could be done in AM so I stuck around, then they said I had leave the car or come back later. Way to manage my time & expectation. Stay away from this joint. It has lost everything since Larry has left. Yoda has left the building and the dark side has taken over. PS...there is a reason why the lot looks less full these days :-( read more

I worked at this service station under Larry Ng for almost five years; Larry is a class act and one of the most honest and reputable mechanics I know. Today, I stopped in for a quick oil change (brought my own oil and filter) and tire rotation. New management charged me $40.00....FORTY DOLLARS....FOR A TIRE ROTATION. I have over 7 years in the auto industry and even when working for a dealership, I never charged this much to any customer. This station has always held a place in my heart for great service and fair prices and it hurts my heart to say STAY AWAY. It is not what it use to be and I feel ripped off by the woman at the desk making up the prices just to make a buck. The lot is empty, the Gulf station had to be sold due to mismanagement, and no familiar faces are there anymore. Buyer beware. read more

Read the 5-start reviews over here and I am glad that all of them have had better experiences with Larry. As I see it - Unfortunately, Larry does not have great people skills and his communication skills are quite bad too. (I am not referring to his native accent) When I spoke to Larry the first time, his to-the-point talk impressed me. But after a few times, I found that to be quite annoying. Larry was not willing to explain what the problem was with the car or what my options were to get the problem fixed. Whenever I have asked counter questions I have been disappointed with the terse, curt and vague answers. If I pressed any more than a minute, he puts a full stop to the conversation and asks me to take my business elsewhere. :-/ And I have. So yeah, as one of the reviewers says - Larry does not give you bullshit. I have to say that Larry does not try to upsell you on anything. I have heard of Larry Ng from friends of friends and acquaintances before, but I didn't drop off the car at his garage until this month. And all of those recommendations and praise for Larry are all true! Larry cuts out all the BS you usually see from an auto repair shop. He gives you the straight story about your car and doesn't try to nickel and dime you. Larry and his mechanics are extremely fast and efficient and get the job done. While I was waiting for my car one day, Larry took care of a drop-in oil change and tire replacement for two separate customers in 10 minutes. That's unfreaking-believable compared to the slow service I have seen else where. There's also a car inspection garage across Rt. 9 that is associated with Larry. If your experience with your current mechanic is merely "meh," I highly urge you to take your car to Larry, asap! read more

I don't trust anyone else with my car! Larry has been my family mechanic for years and I have been going to him ever since I got my license! Larry and his staff are fast, efficient and honest. There is no bullshit, and unlike other places that will likely to tell you that you have a $700 brake job you MUST get done with them, Larry will tell you it's fine with a $200 repair. He has never, EVER charged me for fixing a flat, and this has happened a few times over the years. Everything from inspection sticker, oil change, fixing AC, resetting radio code, changing over snow tires etc... I go to Larry and no one else. Larry is the nicest man you will meet along with his wife and all the staff. With two stations across the street the gas, service, repair and inspect cars. All of this is done with a smile and in a timely fashion sometimes a walk in tire change like I did took 20 minutes, o nay. And the quality of work is out bounding as well as the parts. This is a great mechanic. He had my car fixed in a day. Offered to drive me back to my school since so I wouldn't have to walk. When it was time to pick my car up I ran to the station and he gave me a bottled water because he assumed I was thirsty. I have nothing but faith in Larry. I (and family) have been taking our cars there forever. In my mind he is honest, fair, and kind. Once I woke up to a flat tire on my car. Larry's guys were at my house and changed my tire in time for me to get out to work on time. He has charged some of my family members nothing if it was an easy fix. He diagnosed a problem with my car once in about 2 minutes. Lacking faith, I went to another mechanic. I waited an hour and he came back to me with the same diagnosis. Then told me he couldn't do it. I just brought my car in for a loud front end whirring sound, thinking I was in for wheel bearing replacements, but they diagnosed it as just plain old noisy partly worn Continental Extreme Contact tires, a known issue....charge $25. I love going here, I actually drive from Boston to use him. I have an older car and he's honest about what I should pay for and what I should not. If you ask him he has no problem giving you the old parts if you're worried the work wasn't done. He is very affordable and will use genuine Honda parts when it makes financial sense. Keep in mind he doesn't have time to mess around, he wants you to just drop off the car, tell him what you want looked at and then leave him and his team to troubleshoot and get the work done. Don't expect long warm and fuzzy conversations, although he seems to always be happy and in a good mood. read more

This is one of those reviews that I'm tempted not to write so no one finds out my secret, but I just want to make others as happy as Larry Ng has made me. This guy is honest and dependable. He gives me a better price and leaves out the crap that the Toyota dealer would try to sell me. When replacing parts, he leaves the old pieces in the car for me (a sign of a good mechanic). He is also extremely fast and is willing to take me on short notice. He even once told me not to make oil change appointments -- he said to just show up instead. The only downfall is location. They are close to the commuter rail, but sometimes getting on the commuter rail can be a pain in the ass. Trust me, though -- this guy is worth it. read more

Very honest. Doesn't try and sell you on the up charge (e.g. fixing what isn't really broken) and doesn't charge you ridiculous prices for what needs to be done. We were having problems with our Toyota and so I brought it into the dealer, they quoted me some insane price and gave me a long list of things I 'needed' to have done. A neighbor recommended Larry. When I brought my car to Larry- he said this one thing is critical, and the other things aren't really issues. For the one critical thing I needed to have done, he charged me half of what the dealer was going to charge. Am I ever glad my neighbors recommended Larry. After reading these excellent Yelp reviews, I pulled into this shop for an oil change. I am new to the area, didn't know where to go, and figured I'd give this place my business. The lot was full of cars. The guys that run the place began honking and yelling at me to move my car out of the way. It wouldn't have taken much effort for them to come out of the vehicle, talk to me maturely and tell me where they'd like me to put my car in their busy lot. I was shocked by the honking and yelling at a potential customer. My two young children were also confused. I decided to find another mechanic who learned in Kindergarten how to treat people. I've used Larry several times to help me keep an old car on the road a bit longer. And also to ask for advice. Larry isn't shy about telling you that it's better to give up on a car, or trade a car in, rather than keep it or repair it. Larry's isn't right next door, so I only take my car to Larry's when it needs major work, like a timing belt. Prices are reasonable. His crew is fast and seem to do the job right. In fact everything about Larry's is fast - if you're on Route 9 the shop is upon you before you know it, Larry talks fast, your conversations with him end more quickly than you expect, and the work is usually done on time (pending parts). I'm not too specific about my car, and what I've had done, because Larry has an incredible memory. I used him once, then came by a year later for more work, and as soon as I said my name he remembered my car and what repairs I had. Scary! That being said, he probably already has enough clues to figure out who I am. I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 because I do have trouble communicating with Larry sometimes. Partly it's the accent, but a big contributing factor is that Larry is always busy and comes across as rushed and impatient. But that's also part of the charm - like the delightfully rude service you used to get at Durgin Park or anywhere in NYC. But Larry isn't being rude, he's just busy. Very very busy. Brought my car to the dealer and they quoted me a price that was way more than I was willing to pay (or could pay). I usually prefer to have work done at the dealer but in this case I decided to shop around. Larry had great reviews and he lived up to them. He prioritized the repairs so I could do the critical ones now and then come back in stages for the next most important and so on, so I don't have to pay for all the repairs at the same time.
