My car developed a sudden, and very loud, exhaust leak--one minute it was fine, the next it sounded like a very large truck. I looked under the car and could see a piece of exhaust pipe hanging down. Luckily, I was near a muffler shop in Newton and they agreed to take a look. They told me my muffler had blown-out and that the rear pipe was badly damaged, and it would cost about $450 to repair it. They said they had the parts and would be finished in two to three hours. I decided to take it to another muffler shop I had taken cars to in the past. On the way, I stopped at a gas station, explained my problem, and asked if they could tie-up the exhaust pipe that was hanging down so I could get to the muffler shop without further damaging the system. The guy told me they just sold gas but there was a separate garage attached to the station and they might make a temporary fix for me. The guy in the garage, Jim, said he would see what he could do after he finished working on the car on the lift, which might take an hour. I decided to wait. After about 30 minutes, he put my car up on the lift to look at it. He came into the very small waiting room and said, "You're lucky. Your exhaust pipe isn't damaged, it just needs a new sleeve." When I asked what a sleeve was, he said, "I think I have one in stock; if I do I'll show it to you." He did. indeed, have one. It was a 6-inch tube with a clamp and bolt on either end. He explained that my sleeve had rusted out but that the two pipes it connected looked ok. He said, "I won't know until I take the old sleeve off and can see if the pipes are damaged but, in 90 percent of the cases, we just have to replace the sleeve. I asked what it would cost and he said, "I don't think it will be more than $100." Not quite believing that we wouldn't have some costly complications, I told him to go ahead. He finished the job in about 25 minutes and the car was perfect. I was amazed and very, very pleased. The final bill was under $80, another pleasant surprise. I will recommend Quinlan's, and Jim in particular, to any of my friends who need auto repairs. The only thing I'm unhappy about is that it took me so long to find him. read more

I did service my vehicle at this auto repair shop becuase my water pump was dipped.and he was charge 5 hrs labor plus not quite sure the replace part WATER PUMP was OEM from LEXUS . Quinlan is the BEST mechanic and all around human being. BMW tried to scam me into paying a TON for repairs. I said no way and got the car towed to Quinlan who got to fixing it right away and informed me that BMW lied and said that I needed a new water pump (which would have cost me $3,000 there). I took my car to Quinlan's regularly for 1-2 years, and was satisfied with his transparency and competitive pricing. However, my confidence was lowered considerably when my father's car--which Jim had looked at only days prior--nearly had one of the front wheels come off on the highway. Basically, a crack had developed through the CV joint, resulting in axle failure. We towed the car to a nearby mechanic, who determined the issue had been there for some time (and probably should have been noticed). After this, I decided to take my own car to a different garage.
