I can't believe I neglected to leave a review. Great deal on tires for my '03 BMW 5-series (researched the best price online and it was the same as their quote) AND they corrected a botched alignment from Big O Tires in Santa Cruz ("new" owner is an as*hat). For tires and alignment, I would highly recommend LAC but for other mech related repairs, I can't comment (I DIY most stuff). All I know fme is that the staff was friendly, helpful and efficient. The last job I had them do (must have been a 1-2 years ago) was a timing belt. A critical bolt wasn't tightened. Fortunately I took it to the mechanic next door to Larry's before the bolt worked its way out and my engine was ruined. Interestingly enough, that mechanic forgot to tighten all the bolts on the timing cover. Not necessarily a fatal flaw, but it damaged a belt nonetheless, and got lodged in a plastic cover. I personally delivered this feedback to Larry's auto because of my past experience with them. On a different occasion, I had to get my car towed back to them because it was broken down. Guy noticed that I had brought it into them some months earlier, and as a result of that job, the car broke down. He volunteered that information. He also let me know that the work was under warranty, and there wouldn't be a charge for it. He could've charged me, and I would not have known any better. It seems to me that they are so busy all the time they have to rush, and quality of work suffers. Guy received the feedback better than anybody I've ever seen take feedback. Though I only had a very short interaction with them, I am very impressed. My car broke down on a rainy morning while I was on my way to school. Stressed and panicked, I called around to some local shops in Scott's Valley (where my car broke down) and was turned away until I called Larry's. Though their appointment book was full, they squeezed me in and inspected and diagnosed my car that day. By the next day my car was repaired and road worthy once again. Beyond providing speedy repairs, I feel they charged me fairly and made an effort NOT to rip me off. I couldn't make it to pick up my car before Larry's closed, and they accommodated me by accepting my payment over the phone and allowing me to pick up my car after hours. Damaged my custom rim trying to "chisle" a broken lug nut off. what?!?. They told me they couldn't get it off. When I saw what they did I went to Ace Hardware and bought an extractor tool and brought it to them to finish the job. That's pretty sad when you have to bring your mechanic the proper tool to do the job. If I knew I'd have to do that I could have just did it myself at home. I figured they'd have the right tool for the job. Another time i had an appointment first thing in the morning. When I got there 5 minutes early all bays were full and they were working on other vehicles. The mechanic said "Why you bring this for?" i told him i had an appointment and he said "We have parking in the back where you can leave it". BS I need this done and get to work, can't leave it all day till it's convenient for them. Used to be good place not any more. read more

I was a little hesitant to go to this place after reading some of the reviews. Then discovered some friends of ours having been going to Larry's 30 years and were happy with the business. My starter went out and they fixed in a very timely manner. They used Honda parts which I was fine with and the labor cost was understandable. I've been going to Larry's for at least 4 years now, and never had a bad experience. The prices are reasonable, the service is prompt, and the staff never seems to try to gouge you for work that isn't needed, unlike some repair shops. Example: A couple years ago my rear brakes were squealing, so I took my car in. After checking, Guy advised that something just needed to be tightened or adjusted. He only charged me a small fee. A less honest repair shop might have told me I needed to replace the entire brake system. I've been going to Larry's for 99% of my car repairs (2 different vehicles) for 5+ years. It's within walking distance to my office (very convenient) so that's how I happened upon them for my first repair. I second what everyone says about the professionalism, competency, and fair pricing. But my favorite experience with Larry's is this: I used to drive a Subaru Outback which I'd bought used (cheap) in Vermont before moving cross country. That car had so many issues. There was a period of time where I swear I was bringing it into the shop at least every other month for some semi-major repair. Finally, I brought it in for an exhaust issue, and the underframe was so badly rusted, not only did it take them AN EXTRA DAY to remove the parts, but my gas tank (full of gas) FELL OFF THE CAR. The corrosion was that bad. The crew showed me what had happened, pointed out the rust...I felt so badly that they had spent all of this extra time that I offered Guy a few hundred dollars over the amount of the estimate. Only fair, right? He wouldn't accept it. And in fact, he said, "Trust me...if you continue to drive this car, we will be making plenty of money off of you." Which I thought was very funny and also very sweet. I traded that Subaru for a reliable Camry within weeks, and I've hardly seen Guy since :) Having said that, I need an oil change and a new distributor cap so need to place a call to Larry's. read more

I used Larry's auto care off and on for many years now. They have always been very polite, and professional. the only bummer is so many people come to him that you can't just pull up here you have to make an appointment. And so many times I needed help right now and I've had to take my car other places when I really didn't want to because I like to support local businesses and Larry's is one of those local businesses I always get my smog done here because that is something that you know you're going to need and you can make an appointment for that. Luckily I've always been in and out so it's no big deal every two years I'm getting my smog done here. I've been living in Scotts Valley since 1964 and I'm not quite sure when Larry started I'll have to Google it haha but I bet you he's been around at least as long. Whether it's RVs or cars or trucks Larry's works on them all and I appreciate them being in the community. I just have to add a little update, I've been in HVAC our tech commercial restaurant equipment repair in this area since 1978, and have probably worked in every restaurant and kitchen from Boulder Creek down to Watsonville and beyond and I read some of the comments about parts being high and this and that price on Amazon, well of course Amazon's going to be cheaper if you're buying the part yourself being in business means you have to charge extra to stay in business to pay the insurance to pay the employees to pay for advertisement to pay for the building on and on and on so don't expect to get parts at a cost that you're going to find on Amazon or wherever the heck you're going to find them at when you're in business the usual percentage markup is 50% and that's what it is that's what I've had to charge that's what everybody who's in business charges so if you want to work on your own car and save money like I do then do it but I see all the complaining about the charges oh my God! give me a break, now as for some of the bad service that I've seen timing belts loose bolts etc. that's not good and that's not Larry that's his employees unfortunately and hopefully he got on them for that but to error is human hopefully they learn from that they haven't been here for 30 years for nothing and believe me things go wrong. I've had to eat a few jobs myself over the years and sometimes bad things did happen but the point is you stand behind it and you fix it until the customers are happy. So if you're unhappy politely explain it to whoever it is and they should take care of the problem don't go in there angry because that'll just put up a wall but if the owner is good they won't take it personal and they will fix the problem like they should and this is Larry's. Wow I said all this, and this guy doesn't know me from Adam! The point is I know a good service man when I meet them. read more

I did not actually get a chance to experience their repair abilities. I made an appointment for a smog check; the person on the phone was somewhat rude, but did make the appointment. I showed up at the scheduled time and after waiting for quite a long time behind the prior customer, the front desk clerk asked if I needed something (which made me wonder why else I would have been waiting there in line at the front desk.) I told her I had a smog appointment and she told me their machine was broken. She also told me it broke fairly often! I later mentioned this to someone else in Scotts Valley and they told me they had gone there for a smog appointment a week before and they were told the machine was broken then too - that was a few days BEFORE I called and made my appointment, so either they made my appointment when they knew their machine was broken or it broke twice in 2 weeks. read more

I took my Dodge pickup to Larry's 2 years ago for a quote on a clutch replacement. I was shocked when the service writer told me it would cost $1,800!!! I told him that the local Dodge dealership quoted $950. He sneered at me and told me that Larry's would do the job right and offered a longer warranty. He implied that the Dodge dealership would perform sub-standard work. His arrogance really turned me off. Needless to say I had the dealer do the work. It's been 2 years and the clutch is working fine. I've heard that Larry's does quality work, but I suspect he is way over charging Vs other shops. They are nice people but I can't give them a good review. I stopped going to them years back because I had something fixed and it didn't stay fixed. I can't remember what it was because it wasn't too expensive but I decided to go elsewhere. I'm writing this review because I know had a fuel pump replaced by them for about $650 several years ago (you don't forget having a truck towed). It lasted only 40,000 miles and was replaced last week. The mechanic told me it was a "Chinese Knock off" fuel pump and implied that who ever put it in should have warned me it might be cheap but it wasn't a reliable part. Needless to say I was never warned and would have remembered the warning since I knew about substandard Chinese engines back in the late 1990's. I'd never use Chinese parts for anything that requires substantial labor. I'm not saying don't go to Larry's but if you do you should ask them where the parts are coming from that go in your car. This new pump cost me over $800 and if Larry's had used American parts I think I would have had better luck and gotten a lot more mileage out of the fuel pump. When they replaced that pump a few years back I should have been told it was Chinese so I could decline on the supplier. So for the $800 dollars I shouldn't have had to spend they deserve this review read more

After reading some of the reviews here I needed to write about my experience with Larry's Auto Care. I have been taking my cars to Larry's for over 20 years. I have always been treated courteously and have always had complete satisfaction with the work done to my vehicles. The owner, Guy, is very honest. He will not do unnecessary work and will tell you if the car is on its last leg or not. On the one and only occasion that I had to take my car back in due to a continuing problem that they'd worked on, I wasn't charged and was offered a ride back to my home while they repaired it. I am so very pleasantly surprised at doing business with Larry's Auto. I ran into car trouble this morning, only to find out that my semi-newfound honest and trustworthy mechanic is out of town. I am extremely reluctant at taking in my vehicle to 'any old Joe'. I am very happy to say that having towed in my car to Larry's in the late afternoon, I was surprised to see the problem solved by 4:30 pm and my car back on the road. It turns out that a defective distributor which I had replaced a few months earlier by a service station that was not an 'ideal to do business with' shop was the issue with my car today. The mechanics at Larry's swiftly dealt with the wholesaler to have my new distributor delivered to the shop, and in a very short time had my car ready to roll. My car was under warranty with the old repair shop but it was far easier to pay a small price for diagnostic and labor than to call in another tow to the original shop under warranty. Competent, fast, reliable, not-so-expensive, easy to work with. My old 1986 4-Runner is a great old truck, but I get laughed off the lot when I bring it into Toyota of Palo Alto for repairs ("why put so much money into such an old truck", etc). Larry's just fixes it without a fuss, fixes it fast, does a good job, and it doesn't cost an arm and leg. They also do a variety of work, such as trailer lights, which also wouldn't get touched by other shops that don't have broad skills and open minds. I found them by word of mouth from others that've had good experiences (thx Nic, Bill), and no so happy to have found a great home shop for my vehicle! read more
