We contacted this place and Ray picked up the phone. He answered all of our questions right away and he was super nice and very helpful. We requested a specific type of red brick and he knew exactly what we were talking about. He promised to check and get back with us 10 minutes later he calls back and says that he was able to find the supplier who supplies these brakes, he was able to send us a sample by mail and we chose that same brick we were looking for. I had a great experience with Larry's. Jimmy helped me find pebbles to put in between the pavers in my front yard. I showed him some pictures, and he suggested three different kinds of pebbles. He even gave me samples, so that I could try them at home before finalizing my choice. I came back the next day with the first option that he suggested. The customer service was great, and they even loaded my car with the bags. I would recommend anyone who is doing personal landscaping to them. The prices are a lot lower than Thompson's and a couple of other places I looked at, so I got nice pebbles for a reasonable price. I will definitely use this place for future projects. read more

I've purchased a few small items here and on my last visit, I was one of four women to venture in the dark and dusty front desk area of Larry's. Which was interesting as I've only encounteted men clientele in the past. The guys behind the counter are a little rough around the edges, they match the atmosphere--and strangely, I'm okay with that. It's kind of a man's man type of place. This visit I talked to a very helpful younger gentleman; we walked out to the yard and he showed me a few items and even called their vendor to get a quote. I've been buying bagged pebbles as of late and pound for pound they have been the least expensive out of three building supply locations I frequent. The guys who've hauled my purchases to my car have also been nice; one even suggested I be careful unloading as my purchase weighed 75+pounds--I found that to be very thoughful. read more

Purchased a $150 waterproofing product with a shelf life of 6 months, asked if it was fresh & current before paying, Tony said yes. Expiration / production date on lid was encoded. I called the manufacturer to ask if the product was viable, answer was it was 20 months old, 200% expired. By the time the answer came to me, the guys had applied the product, aimed at protecting my apartment buildings foundation, and poured concrete over it. Business part owner Tony had the product sales rep write a letter saying the product was good, making a 1 star experience a 2. I asked Tony to refund the $150 so he feels some pain and thus modify his actions in the future, reply was you got a letter, so who cares. I would place Tony in the category of those that sound certain, when they don't know. Engineers have more credibility with me than salesmen that write letters. read more

When boss and I decided to build our own backyard patio, we were pretty clueless about the whole process. A number of contractor bids put us in a determined mode of self-sufficiency. So we decided to check out Larry's since it is so close to our place. When we first arrived, with wide eyes mind you, we walked around their lot and looked at all of the different materials. It may not be as comprehensive as some other building supply shops, but they have a nice selection of clay and concrete brick and pavers. Lots of gravel, sand, composite materials. Pretty much anything you can think of, and if it isn't there, they can get access to it on your behalf. This is NOT a lumber yard - so you might try Ganahl or Home Depot. We arrived and were helped immensely by Chris, who happens to be one of the owners of the chain of stores (there is one in IE and one down in Mission Viejo I believe). Chris was very patient with these new do-it-yourselfers. We found ourselves coming back and asking for him each time. I think it helps a great deal to work with someone who has a stake in the business. We ended up ordering most of our supplies through Larry's, which included 4+ pallets of brick, gravel sub-base, and sand. They cut us a good deal on delivery, only charging us once, despite the several trips their crew made to deliver all of the goods. They also accepted our product returns without question. This was a nice bonus to see a little bit of cash come back into your account. The one sticky point we had were prices. I think you could find better prices on material at some other places in the area. A couple things we originally purchased here, I ended up finding at HD or Lowes for considerably cheaper. But there were no problems with the returns. Despite the higher prices, it's beneficial to the community to support this locally-owned business, so we didn't feel as slighted otherwise. Larry's is a good place to go if you are trying to tackle a home improvement project and need some advice and some serious building materials. read more

Bigger selection than most places but was charged extra for "cherry picking" 20 pieces of small flagstones. When I called to inquire about the flagstone, a man told me they had thick and thin. I asked what the difference was (thinking they were going to tell me a specific dimension) and the man says "one is thick and the other is thin"....on a positive note, the guy who helped me "cherry pick" was super cool. read more

If you are a contractor, they would probably be okay. If you are a female, or even just a homeowner for that matter, and don't happen to have your own strong guys immediately on hand to help do the MOST MINOR THING, go elsewhere. They seemed fine up until the delivery. Thanks to Larry's and their inflexibility to help out two women for a maximum of 10 minutes, even though it was represented they would put some boulders in the dirt for me when I was physically at their store and again on the phone, I threw out my back rolling boulders from a pallet. PICTURE THIS: Man with forklift standing by while 2 women are trying to roll 5 boulders off of a pallet into the adjacent dirt, so the pallet will not stay in the driveway/entry to a community all weekend long and cause an accident. For anyone driving by witnessing this, it is not good PR for Larry. The guy could have used his forklift to easily move the rocks from the pallet to the dirt, 2 FEET AWAY ON LEVEL GROUND, but no, his boss told him not to. Not only that, the delivery guy was early, arriving at 7:15, when the delivery time was between 7:30 and 8:00. They were supposed to call my cell when the driver had arrived, but failed there also. It was only by happenstance that I even found out he was there. By the time I got there, the delivery man had already put a pallet in the wrong place and wasn't happy about having to move it. Gee, if they had called like I told them to and like they said they would as my number was right on the invoice, he would not have had to move the pallet. Extremely disappointed with this pathetic customer service and really bummed that I now need to go ice my back again. .... Thanks a lot LARRY!! read more

Boom, cinco stars. I'm just a regular weekend warrior with a DIY landscape project. Went there to cop some rocks. Everyone there was super helpful, from the office guys to the yard guys. I walked the yard to scope out the product, twice guys on forklifts stopped and not only asked if I needed help, but took me around and described their products. Once I went in to the office to crunch the number the guys gave me options, price points and ended up saving me $$, about 50% of what I was ready to pay. They guys are awesome. These guys at Larry's have been great throughout the years! Knowledgeable, professional and customer service seem to be their watchwords. I'm just a DIY guy but they've always taken great care of me. Sorry but it's been my experience that Larry's always cares about all of their customers so ignore the "1 star" rant of the dummy who complained they were early for a delivery...Seriously? LOL! As for their driver not helping to move stuff, that has always been their policy. Like every business owner out there everyone is afraid if getting sued in these litigious times. If you're tired of the big warehouse stores then it's time to give LBM a try! Be sure to ask for their potting soil that was written up in Sunset magazine as my neighbor and his award winning plumerias swears by it! read more

One very unhappy customer here! I found the return policy to be absolutely the worst policy. I was dealing with both the Costa Mesa store and the Laguna store. I originally visited the Costa Mesa store but was told that they did not stock the item I wanted but that the Laguna store had them in stock and so I ordered direct from the Laguna store. The ordering was easy and the staff were helpful. When I needed to return the stones however it was very pricey and not a good experience. I paid $105 to have the stones delivered and $105 to have them returned. I was okay with this as it was my fault for not researching the items ordered more thoroughly . I was told by the staff that if the pallets were in order that I would not have to pay a restocking fee. He said he would call me back to confirm. I did not receive a call but I was dinged a further $200 (applicable to a 25% restocking fee). When I called to speak to the staff about the restocking fee they said that is just their policy . When I originally dealt with Costa Mesa they did not mention a restocking fee so I called them back and asked them again what their policy was for returning items and was told that it is not problem and that there is NO restocking fee. I explained that I purchased the items through their Laguna location and was being charged a restocking fee by Laguna - they said that Laguna is a different store and that they had different policies. I spoke to the owner of the company (Joe), explaining the different policies I was given by both of his stores and he said that he would check with the CM location. The staff at the CM location backtracked on their previous conversation with me and basically the owner is not believing my sequence of events and the conversations I have had with his staff. Obviously the staff is not being honest with the owner for fear of penalty - so basically the owner is calling me a liar. I paid $851 for the stones and was charged a total of $410 for delivery/return/restocking fee. Never again will I give my business to Larry's Building Supply. read more

I went to Larry's to purchase bulk soil. I told them twice that I needed soil for a raised bed garden. They assured me, twice, that the soil they were selling me was PERFECT for a raised bed garden. In the light of day, I discovered they'd sold me some subpar sand-soil mix, with a minimal amount of compost thrown in. Goodbye, 2 hours of my life and 50 of my dollars. Granted I should have known better -- but they also shouldn't have repeatedly assured me that the soil they were selling me wasn't nutrient-deprived crap. It looks like others have had good experiences here, but I was certainly misled by them. read more

One of the best customer service experiences I ever had. Chris at the Larry's Building Materials on the Yale location was extremely helpful. I did a flagstone project in my backyard, and he guided me through the entire process. He even took the time to make sure the two pallets of stone I purchased didn't have a bunch of broken pieces, which resulted in me not having to discard any of the flagstone or having any leftover materials. I was pretty impressed with the final results, but I do think a lot of the success had to do with the help I received from Chris. I have also worked with the guys at the location in Costa Mesa, and have been very happy with their service, as well.
