We were confused at first as to which Thompson we needed to go to first and why there were two. The other location (just a couple blocks away) is the "Design" part, or the showroom really. This location here is where you actually purchase and pick up the supplies. We were able to find everything we needed for our projects at Thompson. We made several trips; scoops of base and sand, sacks of material, and pallets of pavers. Fairly quick to get everything too, not a long wait ever, if any. The staff at this materials location is definitely not as friendly or helpful as the Design location, but then they aren't trying to get your business, at this point they already have it. The people at the counter are still nice enough and fairly helpful, depending on who you talk to. The workers in the back getting the scoops and pallets are quick and get the job done fast, they are the backbone! Pricing is great! And took hardly any time to get what we needed. Keep in mind you have to actually look at the designs and decide what you want at the Design location then order and pay for your items at this location, so that's where it got slightly confusing. And maybe because on our first trip there, the computers were down, so things were a bit amiss. However, if just getting scoops or non-design items then you can go directly to this location to get that type of material. See? It's a bit confusing, but you'll catch on. If we can, anyone can! I have shopped Thompson's in Santa Ana a few times. Last year I waited almost an hour for the yard guy, on the fork lift, to bring me a box of stones. I thought, "Whatever. Just an off day." This time I was building a fireplace hearth and needed some stones. Not a lot. Maybe 25 square feet. After choosing the material, the guy at the desk told me to have the yard guy get it for me. I asked the yard guy to pull the pallet so I could get the stones. He told me he would get them. I explained that I wanted to choose the stones so they would fit together properly. He said if I needed 25 square feet, I got the first two layers on the pallet. Well, that wasn't going to work. I went back inside and spoke to a manager named Mary. I explained to Mary that I was building a hearth and needed to choose the stones so they would fit my space. Mary: We don't let you do that. We just give you the top of the pallet. Me: I am doing a small "finish work" project and need the stones to fit somewhat together. Mary: We can't let everyone just go through the pallets. Can you imagine the mess our yard would be in? Me: Well, yes, I can imagine the mess. But, I'm not asking you to let everyone go through your pallets. I am asking you to let me go through one with my assurance to you that I will not make a mess. Mary: Sorry. So I left and went to Valley Resource Building materials in Lake Forest. What great guys! I got the rocks I needed. AND... I didn't even make a mess of their yard! So, I know where not to go in the future. I suppose if you are a "tradesman" Thompson's would be fine. But, if you are a "craftsman" they don't seem to care much about being helpful. This place is hit or miss. But when they miss, they miss bad. I spent about 3k total here and would hesitate to do it again. If Home Depot has the supplies you need, save yourself the headache and go there instead. Once they have your money, the customer service takes a dive fast. I don't really think they care about regular DIY customers as much as they care about commercial/contractor accounts. Not sure if their management cares to read the reviews or not but here's feedback about my interaction with their sales rep Trevor Garcia. Just a couple blocks down from the main Thompson Building Material yard in Orange, CA is the Thompson show room. This is the business of which I'm writing about. My situation was we're doing some hardscape outside of our house and one of the tradesmen picked up the wrong color stone materials (we're trying to match preexisting). So I then personally returned them. Mary, Paul, Valerie, and Jessie could not have been more helpful and supportive. I had an entire team of professionals reviewing the samples and validating what would best match our older materials. They have years of experience, Mary is just flat out awesome, and it was clear the entire gang enjoy what they do. I couldn't recommend them more highly! read more

This is my first YELP review but this place deserves a shout out! I think Thompson's sometimes gets missed when we search for yard decor features. Fortunately, I decided to stop in one day and discovered they have a huge selection of fountains, sculptures, and pots, as well as display ideas for fire pits and outdoor cook islands. Everyone I encountered there (in the yard AND at the design center) was extremely nice and knowledgeable. Special thanks to Guillermo & Ian in the outside decor area for their patience & helpful persistence in locating for me the exact fountain I wanted! Really helpful and kind staff. Currently have a huge remodel going on and the prices here are definitely tough to beat. The selection here is much larger than the surrounding building material lots. Also, just down the street they have the "design room" on Case street where you can see a much larger selection of how the material is put together instead of just raw material. Visiting both is a great option because you get to see and check out the materials and then also see them be used in action within a design. I have even had to return and swap items to include bulk stone and the staff made it really easy and not stressful. Will definitely be returning for more material for any of my remodel needs. I spoke to a few of the order desk guys prior to going here. They were nice but did provide some incorrect information which I didn't realize until I went here to actually place the order. I am still so grateful I found them. I needed flooring from MSi but they don't sell to the public. I got lucky to get NYLA when I came here to order. I've been working for the same General Contractor for 7 1/2 years. Almost every time we have done business with Thompson's, the sales and delivery experience has been less than desirable. Granted, there have been a couple of times that the sale went smoothly and the delivery was perfect. But I would say that this happened maybe 3 or 4 times. Here's the straw that broke the camel's back: Earlier this week, a coworker of mine went into their Orange Sales counter to get quotes for a particular product that we need for an existing project. Come to find out that the material is special ordered out of the Northwest and it would take "1-2 months" to get. Since Thompson's has a reputation for being on the more expensive side of vendors, I decided to contact the manufacturer (like I've done before) and see who else I could purchase this product from in Southern California... The response was that only Thompson's carries this material. Okay, I thought... So, after my co-worker sent him an email, I left two voicemails and called this sales rep's extension multiple times (name withheld out of respect) - I decided to ask for a supervisor... After holding for a supervisor, a gentleman answered the phone and when I asked who I was speaking with (all I wanted to do was document his name for the record), he hung up on me! Never introduced himself, never even acknowledged that I was on the line. Bottom line is: "providing the highest quality customer service" is NOT on their priority list, and I will NEVER do business with Thompson's Building Materials again out of choice. Sepulveda in South Orange County is looking like a promising option... Ugh! Had to share my first time experience here at this facility. First being a woman in the working world, it is always a gain when we are able to go into a mainly man employed facility and not have to feel intimidated .I had never been here ,however drove past many times .It was not until recently that I had need for Hardscape materials , and was referred by my landscaper to check this place out. I drove into the Corner Building and made my way inside. No greeters or any of the 6 men behind the counter seemed happy to be there . I waited my turn and with confidence asked about the rocks I was looking for . He was as a matter of fact and directed me down the street . Whoo! glad I got through that ! I drove down the block to Taft building ,again a bit intimidating as there is no real signage of where to start , I just walked around and no one bothered to ask if I needed assistance, very uncomfortable. I made it inside the design room ,that was set up in Covid compliance .I found a line to the counter /cashier and took a chance to start there . There was about 4 female employees working there which made me feel less lost, and at ease thinking how nice it was to see women sharing their knowledge and experience in a mainly man ran business. There was 1 young lady behind the counter doing a great job by herself , while the other 3 roamed around the design floor . I watched 2 of them assist customers while 1 just walked around , never acknowledging any standing customers. That was somewhat frustrating , as the lady behind counter was assisting 1 customer while 3 of us others waited. Finally after 2 customers it was my turn , I had helped myself looking at samples and assuming I knew what I wanted , as there was so many selections of rocks and sizes, but no one to help me . The lady that was on the floor (Rita)Finally jumped on one of the 5 open Cash registered and asked what I needed. I tried my best to explain what I needed, and gave her a few guestimate numbers .I showed her the rocks I wanted 1/2-1 inch Mixed Beach Pebble. I was so disappointed that she behaved as I was bothering her and made me feel a tad stupid as she asked about yardage. Its not the what she was asking ,its the way she was telling me !After it was decided the weight and product ,the original lady (who was very helpful and pleasant )took over and completed my order , I guess Rita had more important things to do. Bottom line here ,place is nice with a variety of building materials and great prices. Lacking is the motivation of the employees , ready to assist and make you feel as important , as any of the men that walk in .Making the female gender feel awesome that women can walk into a place like this and feel equal, and not have to experience more competition among other females. Remember the women make the decisions in the home of what will be built and what materials 95% of the time. I worked in the Corporate world ,skirts' suits and heels , however I also worked on a construction crew, Boots ,hard hat and tool belt .Kuddos to the women that really want to work here , and the other women that don't well they they need to find another job!!I hope next time I walk in either facility that Customer Service begins with a big HELLO!!! By The way outside crew , I found to be so busy that they take your Gold paper and just walk away . Hey Hey where do you want me to park ?? By this time intimidation is gone , now you are just being rude! Anyways I gave them benefit of doubt and waited to get loaded. Funny part NOW , after all that and me shoveling over 450 pounds of rock into the planter area , I was not only short but I think I got the wrong rocks LOL the size seems bigger Of course I did not check it before I left, I HAD NOTHING TO COMPARE IT TO, and the young man loading my truck never showed me anything . See I don't get angry anymore ,its not worth it. I just want people to care and be nicer to each other. Just when you thought things couldn't get any worst! Well, they do! About 3 weeks ago we paid someone to go pick up material we needed from MSI. Unfortunately, you have to place the order through either a contractor or Thompson. Well, the guy went and placed the order with a young lady at Thompson and asked for 50 feet of the product. He said she seemed a little confused and seemed to use her calculator a lot but she finally charged him and gave him the order. Well, since it's a special order you have to then drive to MSI and give them the order and then drive to get it from their warehouse side. When he arrived with the material we check his truck and he has 2 boxes ONLY. There's only 6 feet in each box. He did pick up other product so he didn't think much since his truck was full of items. I called and the guy that I talked to at Thompson said that there was nothing for me to do other than drive back and place a second order. So I drove to Thompson and was helped by a young lady. I explained what had happened and I told her that he needed 50 feet and only got 12 feet. She is looking at the receipt I am showing her and looks so confused. I told her I need 7 more boxes to complete the 50 feet. She said no you need more. I said no, I only need 50 feet and there's 6 feet in each box and I already got 12 feet. She continued to calculate the numbers on her calculator. Then she calls the other lady which was the one that made a mistake. They both can't figure out how many boxes I need even though I already told them. At that point I'm really upset because they don't want to sell me what I'm asking for. I'm trying not to get loud but we are going back and forth. She keeps saying there's 4 in a box, and I'm telling her there's 6. After wasting my time I walked out with an order for 7 boxes. Unfortunately, we decided to add that same rock to a different part of the outdoor. My contractor went to Thompson this morning to get the same rock. I gave him the receipt they gave me thinking it would make it easier on them. Nope!!!! They were trying to order the wrong color. Our contractor told them that was incorrect and he just needed the same material they had sold us in with that receipt. They made my contractor drive to MSI to figure out what they needed. Thankfully, they called me after going back and forth and not getting anything. I looked up the product on MSI website and send them a picture of the item number it took them almost 3 hours going back and forth locations and people. I think it's really important that the staff at Thompson have access to the web so that they can look up items and it would make it easier on everyone. It took me 2 minutes to look up item name that was on their original receipt to figure out what the item number was and send it to them. Not sure if anyone at Thompson takes the time to read reviews. But I hope they do to improve the customer service. read more

1st and last time in this place. I could here commotion inside the place b4 I opened the doors. Once inside it appeared to be a loud AF "gangsta party" as the kids say. Smoking and joking by all the employees talking and yelling about inappropriate crap. Gal at the counter that was dealing with me had to ask me to repeat myself 3 damn times because she wasnt paying attention and looking over my shoulder listening to what the other yahoos (employees) were talking about behind me. I just wanted some blocks! Plenty of other places to go too. Im really embarrassed for this place and apparent lack of management.
