So this place is huge. They definitely cater to the professional finish carpenters just by the quality of woods they have there and variety. They have the largest selection of high end woods I've ever seen out of any store I've been to in CA. If you can't find it here good luck trying to find it anywhere else. Additionally, they have a good amount of small cut woods such as Cocobola, East Indian Walnut, Babinga, etc. if you're a hobbyist. It's not a wide selection per-se but it is a great value if you're into turning, knife making, etc. because you can buy in bulk which is nice. I bought some Cocobola from there and I absolutely loved the quality and how easy it was to work with. Give this place a try if you want to try and find some really unique pieces. read more

I love ace it reminds me of old school hardware stores from the 70s and 80s before Home Depot was a thing personal service experienced and knowledgeable staff friendly clean well stocked check all those boxes. Super helpful and well experienced staff there. I needed to replace older cabinet hinges. And they had what I needed to complete the project. Lots of woodcraftsmen there. They gave me a recommendation for a window project when I asked if they knew of someone who could help out with that. I was not aware that this place even existed. And it is huge inside! Ace Hardware usually has hardware for my older house when I need to replace something but this hinge they did not have and they were the ones who recommended Austin. I walked in with a sample and asked the guy in the booth if he had anything like it. He directed me to their closest match and I bought 4 sticks, as well as stain and top coat. An employee cut the sticks in half so I could get them into the car and shrink wrapped them together to make transport easier. read more

When you come here, it's magical =) So many DIY ideas come flowing when you visit here, and you are so inspired by the amount and varieties of live wood they have here. For the area they have a good selection and prices but EVERY time I purchase wood here they always over charge. I don't know if their regular practice is to add to the actual BF or if the employees are making mistakes but there are simple apps that measure the BF. Today I bought a 4/4 board that was 9'1" long, 11.25 wide (11 at the narrowest and 11.25 at the widest), which should have been 8.52BF (using the widest measure of 11.25) but they charged me of 9.5BF (even for the basic dummy it should have been easy to see a 4/4 board that isn't even 12" wide couldn't be more than the length in BF) . I didn't realize the over charge again until I got home and it's not worth the drive back as I only bought hard maple but I HIGHLY recommend you check and challenge the cashiers as clearly they are making mistakes at best or are intentionally ripping off the consumer at worst. On a side note, I rarely write reviews but after getting ripped off at least 9-10times in the past, its more about principle than the money... and yes I know I have some ownership in my losses because I know they consistently overcharge and I should pay attention at the checkout. read more

Not great not bad. I needed knobs for my kitchen cabinets and my contractor sent me here. Driving up there are signs everywhere that tells you where to park which is helpful, whether you're a customer or a contractor. The door was wide open which is welcoming. When I walked in there were 3 people at the desk behind a computer that wasn't helping anyone but they also didn't acknowledge me. I know for sure I walked in looking confused and lost. I walked up to the closest person and explained what I'm looking for. He said 4th aisle and pointed. So I walked over and looked for it myself. It took me a little longer to find what I needed since I did it myself but that's fine, I'm an independent lady! I went to the register with my items and again, no one acknowledged me and I had to walk up to someone to ask if this is where I would check out. I also then asked about the return / exchange policy in case I got the wrong thing. All in all, I got what I needed with just barely passing customer service. read more

I had never heard of this place before but the dude at Ganahl, my usual moulding place, referred me here for my particular need. I was looking for some unfinished alder 1/4 round and, sure enough, Austin had it in stock. The place is on some obscure side street in Santa Ana but it's a decent sized place with great service. I was walked over to the section that I needed, the cashier was helpful and the dude that cut my piece to size has nice. A great first time experience. read more

Unlike the big box stores they store and handle their wood with care which is totally understandable given it's value. I started going here way back in the late 1990s with my dad. I have read some of the other reviews stating that it is hard to get folks to help you here... That could not be farther from the truth from my experience. Whenever I have a question or request, I get helped promptly and with a smile. I very much enjoy my trips to Austin H&H! It's unfortunate that I have to say, if what you want isn't in the store, don't buy it. Here is our story: we were sent there by our contractor because they had a large and great selection of cabinet door handles. The sign on the wall said 1-3 days lead time. Sure, the sales person even called to check with the vendor, they said we have it in LA (we are one hour south of LA), so the sales person said we probably are going to receive them in 1 day. Given that even 4 days worked for us, we paid for them and went home. After, 4 days, I had to call them to see where the items are, and they said I have to call back on Monday as they don't know the answer. Called on Monday, they said the order is not even sent to the vendor. So told me to call back next day and get the tracking number. Called on Tuesday, they said they haven't send the items yet and will email me when they send them. At this point, after not seeing their email, I sent them a message on their website to cancel the order as I had to order them from somewhere else with an expedited delivery. Called them in the morning to make sure they cancel the order to realize that actually they have sent the items, and were delivered at noon! Now I am in the process of communicating with them to cancel/return/refund them as I don't need them anymore. One thing that is mentioned in the communications is that, they say we don't do refunds on special orders. But my objection is that just saying this doesn't mean that you can ignore fulfilling your responsibilities, one of which is delivery estimate you have mentioned in your store, and then expect the customer to pay for the items. read more

Came in looking for sheets and finishes. Parking in the back is limited but this isn't the Home Depot so you'll rarely find it crowded. Service is fast and knowledgeable. Floor staff are quick to answer your questions and give additional information if they feel your project could do with suggestions in alternative materials and/or pricing options. This place is quite huge though so be ready to be overwhelmed if you haven't done your research. This isn't to say that Austin is restricted to industry people; I'd rather come here than to that bougie joint, Restoration Hardware. *scoff* Found what we needed then left. This is THE place to go for hardwood and hardware. Skip the big box stores and even the lumber yards. If you want unique wood with a wide selection of other hardware, tools, unique hard to find items, then this is the place. I did business with Austin decades ago when they were on Main Street and a quarter of the size. Even back then they were a gem of a find that I had been looking for for years to find a place that was helpful, approachable, and a wide selection of unique woods. The staff are a,ways coming up and asking for help. If you are in their plywood section there's always someone there to help load you up. They also have added a wonderful selection of live edge woods that are reasonable priced and clearly marked for easy selection. I found a wonderful piece I turned into a unique bar top that friends rave over. It's always a topic of discussion when new guests come over. They also have a very generous selection of Festool tools and materials. They have a huge selection of sliders, screws, sandpaper, glue, lacquer and more. Their appliance displays are wonderful and awesome to evaluate many kitchen additions that I've incorporated into my kitchen for a unique experience. When loading up its very common to see someone out in the lot ready to help. I strongly recommend anyone wanting wood and hardware outside the norm to go take a visit here and allocate a solid hour to walk around and suck it all in. read more
