So I called in on a Friday for 3 yrds And dispatch got me a window of 3:30 pm, which was good cause I still needed to frame up everything! It was supposed to rain that weekend So everyone wanted their delivery That day! They're delivery driver "jack" no!!! Very poor customer service and communication. Unwilling to calmly discuss my concrete requirements. Dispatcher was slurring his words, and became agitated when I respectfully asked him to repeat what he was saying a few times during our brief discussion. I would have been happy to call at a different time, or speak with a different person if he was in a rush and asked, but instead he acted impatient and condescending. We hired cement layers by the name of Scott and Nate of Santa Cruz. They have been paid for the job plus another $1000 in supplies to rip out the cement they laid by accident. They got "A" cement delivery and it was the wrong cement and had to be ripped out. Did Scott not pay for the cement? Cause now Las Animas has sent a threatening letter to us saying they are going to put a lien on our home. THIS IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING I EVER HEARD OF, we don't even know if they are the ones that provided the cement. We have no contract with them. You can't just go ahead and threaten anyone you want to get paid. I have no contract with them and their issue is with Scott not us. (Heck we aren't even sure were the cement came from. This company may not have even done the cement delivery. This could be just some company trying to get $$$$.) i think that new polices such as payment before delivery should be instilled with orders that are "fishy". read more

I've been using Las Animas for concrete in Santa Cruz for about 20 years, and overall I'd have to say they are a top shelf outfit.

Scott did end up calling me back a week later & coming by the home (when I was not home), but rather than even considering they could have mixed the concrete wrong or their driver could be not telling the truth about what happened, Scott told me what his driver told him and that I should be pointing fingers at someone else. I never was out to point fingers at anybody, but I am sorry, a business needs to side with the customer, not try to pretend everything on their end was perfect. Bottom line, their customer service skills need help! Even if all Scott did was offer a couple hundred bucks back and say sorry that the concrete was not mixed properly and that my driver didn't offer help as they should. Good luck if you choose to use them, and make sure you check the mix before they start dumping out the material!!!! They not only lost me as future customer, but my contractor & father in law of 30+ years of experience, who's used Las Animas many times in the past with no issues. They should try to keep their long term clients happy & not lose them. They have a chance to make it right, I hope they call us & choose to do something, and I might choose to edit my review... (original post) I called Scott the owner on Tuesday to see if he can come by and look at our end result or at least call me back, he Has not called me yet. I am not a contractor, but I've worked with concrete before,and know what the consistency should be to be able to work with it. Bottom line it was mixed dry and too hot. But whether you are experienced at it or not, the driver and owner of the company should be helpful enough to give advice to make it right. I can't believe my GC even got it to look some what okay, but it's not okay how they treated my contractor and father in law or myself. I will never recommend them! I had a gut feeling to use Granite because my friends dad works there, I should have gone with my gut. At least fess,up that the concrete was mixed wrong and the driver did not do his job in making sure it had adequate water before he started to pour, and if you want to make it right at least call people back when they leave a message. Worst experience I've ever had with concrete. I"ve dealt with San Benito in Watsonville numerous times and Granite ROck in Santa Cruz once. This was my first time with Los Animas. Be very careful with this group . They added charges to my bill AFTER I signed the bill and without my knowledge and consent. I found Scott to be a man of little to no integrity ........thank GOd I paid with a credit card. My advice would be to stay away from this company . San Benito in Watsonville is cheaper and the employees are always professional and honest. THe only reason I didn't use them on this job was because I needed the delivery asap and they were booked up that day. read more

I am not one to write reviews generally, however do to a recent experience I had with Las Animas I am writing one hopefully to save another from the nightmare I had pouring concrete. I am a General Contractor of thirty plus years working with homeowners on repairs and remodeling. I have an excellent track record and I am currently 60 years old. With age, I am finding that I cannot do the work I used to and sometimes details can get by me now. So I don't pour much concrete anymore but I always called Las Animas first. But when my daughter and son in law asked me to replace their failing asphalt driveway with concrete, I agreed knowing I could save them some money. So I removed the asphalt, ran some new conduits for utilities, set grade,set forms, tied the steel and we were ready to pour. My son was helping and I had one other guy whom I had worked with once before on a pour and knew he had finishing experience. We were pouring 8 cubic yards and when the truck arrived I was trying to go over procedures with my help and remember the many details of the pour. I greeted the driver with good morning and away we went. Once the mud was coming down the chute I was focused on the screed and placement. When the driveway was half poured I realized that it was starting to set already and asked for some water to be added which the driver did but he didn't add much as the concrete was still very dry. The fact the the mud was too dry was an oversight on my part and a big one. It was too late already. We worked as hard as we could to salvage this driveway and it came out sub-standard. A day of pure anguish for me. I called the next day and talked to Scott about how this could happen as their drivers are usually very professional. His driver told him that he asked me if I wanted water added and I declined but that simply did not happen. Scott told me I should get a professional to pour concrete it is not the drivers fault. I take exception to this. The driver was indeed experienced and knew all along the predicament we were in without adding water and he did nothing and said nothing. Concrete as it comes from the batch plant can not be finished as a slab without adding water. In the end I am left asking why? What joy did he get from watching us fail? He certainly can call me an idiot, no argument, I should have caught it, but it got by me in the heat of the moment (senior moment). It happens. But he knew, and did not have all the other details to attend to. I always thought we were on the same team. Working together for a good end result. Not the case here. Now we all suffer the result of a driver who decided not to be helpful. I will never know why but I will never call Las Animas again. I aim for Win/ win transactions. I follow the golden rule. This driver committed an act of cruelty, maybe he didn't like the way I look. But concrete is permanent and now my grandchildren will not be roller skating on this driveway.
