Of all the places you can go in town, this isn't it. I've personally heard Butch, one of the owners, yell out (due to his partial deafness I presume) incredibly bigoted and racist stuff apropos of nothing in the store, just cannot keep his opinions to himself. He is unpleasant, incompetent, and I've hated every interaction I've had with him. Just read some of the other reviews. Additionally wow, he sure talks pretty rough to the employees in front of customers; it's genuinely surprising and uncomfortable. The employees generally seem pretty nice and helpful, so dunno what that's about. Their COVID behavior and compliance was atrocious, and was part of the reason I stopped shopping here. Gail (?) and the other one (maybe related?) were just constantly pulling their masks down right in my face to shout out stuff to their employees across the store. When you think degens from upcountry, the boot fits. Their prices aren't great compared to other shops across town and seem to really make their buck off of tech people who buy the super expensive raw refrigerated nonsense for their dogs. They have some cute local suppliers, which is such a shame. In short: we have other suppliers in town. These are not great people. The other stores aren't that far away. read more

We have had truly mixed experiences with this business. The women who work at the stores and the male assistant is always helpful, kind, funny, warm. The male owner of the store is often not friendly and not warm to us. In fact, a couple of times he was very rude to my husband, (snappy, up-charged on an item even though my husband pointed it out, threw credit card at him, etc). My husband is a clean-cut, mild-mannered Mexican man -- who truly is non confrontational in his approach to others. We have decided we would rather travel across town than return after recent interactions. :( read more

I think we are so lucky to have this resource in our community. You can get livestock and pet supplies. They let you buy hay by the flake and you can save a lot of money from buying hay from other stores. Feed is reasonably priced. Excellent collection of frozen pet food. Random livestock items that could come in handy. A definite place to come to buy chicken stuff, if you have chickens and live on the westside. read more

I loved this place. But today we were treated in the most dismissive way I can ever recall in a retail location. We asked for help locating a probiotic for our dog. After 60 seconds assisting us, Susan wandered off, practically mid-sentence, to help another customer who was yelling for her from the front counter. Moments later she half-turned toward us and mumbled that she'd get back to us. It was an astonishing, unprecedented dismissal from a retail clerk, anywhere. Do not reccomend this business based on their lack of integrity, respect for the law and the environment. A flat bed delivery vehicle being driven by the husband of the lady I spoke to on the business phone was driving down a rural road that runs through Wilder Ranch with an uncovered load of hay that was littering hay all over the roadway and into my vehicle. When the driver pulled over I asked him to cover his load and he aggressively accelerated and tried tailgating me. To the best of my knowledge California law requires that vehicles operators cover their load to prevent litter our highways. If stuff is flying out of your vehicle it should be covered, common sense. Furthermore, commercial feed hay is loaded with seeds that could potentially make their way into Wilder Ranch and sprout up as invasive plant species in a protected forest. The lady who is evidently married to the driver of the delivery vehicle didn't seem concerned. If you value the planet (and I know you do SC) please consider taking your business elsewhere! read more

Local pet store, on the west side close to home for me, which is a major win. Staff is friendly and always enjoyable in my visits. They carry the cat litter integrity which I am a Huuuuuuge fan of, please don't stop carrying it. :) Only reason they don't get the 5 star is because the food choices are good but not great. Would be nice to do special orders if possible, then I'd be able to give the full 5 stars, currently seeking Acana "grasslands" for both cat and dog, alas I will have to go to pet pals for my food for now. I am so thankful for Gail (& the whole crew!) for setting up shop on the westside! Besides hays & grains, they carry quality canned, dry and raw diets for your various furry family members at a reasonable price and comparable to the chain stores. Not sure where to start? They'll help you figure it out. I'm a first-time dog owner and when I decided to feed raw two years ago, Gail was SO helpful with the transition, and answering my newbie questions. Any time there was a hitch in the journey, Gail's suggestions always worked and kept us on track. I enjoy dropping in to Westside for food and treats for my dog and cat - and a fun &/or informative conversation. Great Westside feed store. They carry Mallard Creek Equine bedding products like MegaZorb, which is our preferred brand. Great selection of pet, livestock, and poultry stock products. The shop kitty was curled up in a chair sleeping, lending a homey feel to the store. Very friendly, helpful staff. There is parking through the gate, making loading 40 pound bags pretty easy. So glad we gave this place a try! read more

One of the few places in town that carry Natural Balance! Plus, I didn't have to fight traffic to get there. Finally I found a place that carries the 1) dog food we LOVE 2) cat food we LOVE 3) Litter we NEED 4) all treats and accouterments for our furry companions. We took the dog in and she went crazy for the chickens in the back. Also, I think I saw a dog training class happening in the back? I came here for my first time today to pick up some food for my dogs. First off- yay, competitive prices! I get TOTW for my dogs, and it as almost a full $10 cheaper here than most places. Also, they have a great stock... I just came in for dog food, but ended up leaving with a cute pink floral pig toy, some organic beef jerky treats, and the prettiest smelling goat's milk soap ever! The woman working was incredibly sweet and helpful. I asked her for a coupling leash and since they were putting in an order, she ordered one for me to come in tomorrow. All in all, this is the only pet supply store I will be going to in Santa Cruz. It has everything that I need: a knowledgeable and friendly staff, an expansive selection, and great prices. Far better than going into a Pet Smart or Petco where the stock is always the same big brands and the employees don't know what they're talking about. ;) read more

It's great to have access to a feed store so close to town, but this one dude put a bitter taste in my mouth the other day when I went in to grab a sack of alfalfa like I usually do and this man stopped me, saying "we only let people who know what they're doing go in the back." TracyP wrote the truth when she said the folks at Westside Farm and Feed bring back memories of how spectacular people were after the quake - but these people live their entire lives with that spirit, and it shows in the quality and services they provide. It's so marvelous to have a full service store on the WESTSIDE! No more driving miles and miles to get to the only other decent feed store - Mountain - or worse, to the other side of town where the products and service are far less than desirable. Everyone at Westside Farm & Feed knows their stuff and they offer seasonal classes for pennies - even free with a purchase for some of the classes. The store is clean, well organized and stocked with quality - no box store madness here, just down home and what you need. Now the AlpacaLover who whined about the orchard grass, heads up honey... I'm sure you are a professional farmer and all...since you raise alpacas and grow a lawn, but orchard grass and alfalfa grow in *gasp* dirt! I've purchased bales there with no problem, but wouldn't be in a twist if there were a few dirt clods. And a 35$ delivery fee is nothing to cry about either, think about gas, vehicle wear and yes, salaries for the delivery people. I haven't come across a business like this in a long, long while. New to Santa Cruz, Westside Farm and Feed opened in November. Butch, and Gail two of the owners, and long time Santa Cruz County residents stood patiently as I asked them novice questions about chickens- lots and lots of questions. These are the type of people you remember residing in Santa Cruz before the earthquake- friendly, down to earth, helpful, did I mention friendly? Butch showed me his genius designed chicken coop- which I can see easily being featured in Sunset Magazine. Gail patiently answered (oh, with a cheerful smile) all my questions, and gave me so much advice. They invited me (with again, a smile) to come back with any questions I have (even though I hadn't purchased anything). I walked out of Westside Farm and Feed as if I just finished a 2 hour session at the library researching, chickens, and goats. And dear God, have I not presented my hat off to these brilliant folks who decided to open a feed store on the WESTSIDE of Santa Cruz! What the heck have people been doing for their pet, livestock and farm supplies all this time? Driving to the Eastside, or into the mountains? Crazy! When in November, I saw their banner unimposingly placed right next to the train crossing on Swift, I did a double take and my heart skipped a beat. I now decided that with a feed store so close, it was time for me to add some livestock to my husband's modest urban farming venture. Thank you Butch, Gail and Susan. Westside Farm and Feed is a nice little store that's very convenient for those of us who live on the Westside. The folks that run the place are fantastic- very nice, accommodating, always willing to offer assistance and answer questions. They carry a decent selection of good-quality dog and cat foods and treats, as well as a small sampling of leashes, collars and toys. They also have a nice selection of equine and livestock feeds, grass hay, alfalfa, etc. They've recently added freezers and stock raw dog and cat foods, primarily Primal. They'll special-order just about anything you ask. Why only three stars, though? It's extremely expensive. There are three other pet/feed stores within 10 miles of this place with significantly cheaper foods, toys, and treats. It's worth visiting for the convenience if I need something quickly or run out unexpectedly, and the service is great, but honestly I'd rather drive a little farther and get better pricing elsewhere. Even with the added time and gas costs, this place is easily beat by other Santa Cruz-area stores. read more

When I moved to Santa Cruz I was worried that I was going to have trouble finding taste of the wild dog food for my American Pit Bull Terriers. I was on yelp looking for locally owned pet stores and found westside. Not only do the have a verity of taste of the wild food, but they have lots of other goodies for your k9 friends! The staff is knowledgeable about the products they carry, which is a huge plus. On top of that they are always welcoming, friendly, and a good conversation. Also prices for Instinct and Evo brands are better than other retailers! I heard they carried quality dog foods and primal bones here (raw). I loved that its significantly closer than petsmart to me so I decided to check it out. The store is well stocked and they carry blue wilderness, wellness, and taste of the wild to name a few in addition to raw food and bones. They have cute country gift type items and the customer service was over the top. They didn't have the specific wellness core "ocean" one I'm really liking and happily offered to order it. They took my info all with a smile and asked my name and how I was doing while sharing how they were. I love that! I am very happy to get my pet supplies here.
