    Smoked pork nachos
    Sophia H.

What a great first visit to this restaurant! We arrived around 8 pm and were seated after a short wait. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The decorations were beautiful, and they really made the place feel welcoming.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] For my meal, I ordered the smoked pork nachos, and they were absolutely incredible--easily the highlight of the night. The food was delicious and definitely worth the trip. Our waiter was very nice and kept apologizing for a few issues, like a slow handheld computer for payments, but it was completely understandable. They were very sweet and handled it well. The only real inconvenience was the poor cell signal, which I'm guessing is because it's so close to the train tracks. Despite the small hiccups, the delicious food and wonderful service made it a fantastic evening. I'll be back for those nachos for sure!

This place did a great job with the huge space they have. They have an entire backyard perfect for the kiddos to play in. And this restaurant is HUGE. Definitely good for groups and parties. It is directly behind the Dollar Tree and Planet Fitness and along the train tracks. Which, oddly enough, I never heard the train once while we dinned here; they must have really good inulation. I came here for happy hour about a month ago. The HH is at the bar only and from 3 to 6 Monday through Friday. I ordered the smoked pork nachos which were on $9 and it was pretty tasty. These are the people from Central City BBQ. I do kind of wish some of the items on their CC menu were on this menu, like the boudin, but I realize it is supposed to be a different restaurant. The service was great and the restaurant was clean. I will probably be back for more happy hour fun times.

Glad we came a second time since opening. Skinny margaritas was a definite plus. Jose Quervo, Agave, Lime juice with a salted rim.

My first time trying this place and I was not impressed. The building is new and very clean. Our server was friendly, but the food just really missed the mark for me. I didn't like the queso at all.. it had what tasted like a curry spice blend in it that I did not enjoy. The salsa was pretty tasty and nice and spicy but the beans and rice were pretty bland. I had a steak taco that was just ok.. the meat had a good smoky flavor but it was chopped up very small. The skinny Marg just fell short for me too. I really wanted to like this place :(

    Steak fajitas and chicken enchiladas

Was so excited to try this place out but was disappointed with the our experience. They def have some kinks to work out. Let's start with the good. Friendly hosts, and steak fajita was great! Usually I think fajitas are too dry but the meat on this was delightful. The negatives though: 1. I wasn't wowed with my chicken enchiladas. The red sauce was a little too smoky and overpowered the taste for the whole dish. 2. Out server. I don't want to call her out by name because she's young and inexperienced. But she could definitely benefit from some extra shadowing/training. I ordered chicken enchiladas and was brought a chicken quesadilla. Told the food runner and he went right back. The server came over to ask me what I ordered like she was hearing it for the first time. She never apologized once. Just "okay" and walked away. We had to specifically ask for refills on our drinks. We were one of 4 tables in the restaurant with three servers, so it wasn't that she was too busy. Just didn't seem like she wanted to be there? Long story short: I'll be back a few months from now once they work out a few things. Great potential here!

    Hanger steak fajitas.

Ok, full disclosure... I'm a bit of a Mexican food snob, what with me being married to an amazing Mexican/American Chicana who's somewhat spoiled me to fantastic homemade dishes, so I'm a bit biased when it comes to reviewing Mexican restaurants. But, I'm going to be fair in my review. First, I wouldn't categorize this places as Tex-Mex, but that doesn't in any way diminish its review points. The name points perfectly to the style of Mexican flavors you should expect: Las Cruces, and in my opinion, they did a great job of capturing some of the signature New Mexico flavors. But, more on the food later. Kudos to the wait staff... they did a great job. We were greeted by a friendly host, seated quickly, and had placed our order in less than 10 minutes. The restaurant is huge, so there was a good number of tables. We're a big group, and they handled our order with no bubbles, and from looking around at the other tables, they thrive on large groups (and they're kid friendly, too). The restaurant was clean and neat, which is a plus in our area. Chips & Salsa Excellent! The chips were fresh, and the salsa definitely tasted homemade, with the perfect amount of kick. I ate way too many of these. Entrees My Mexican bride ordered the tinga chicken enchiladas. The order was huge, with three over stuffed enchiladas. She ate about half and got a take-away bag (a good sign, coming from her). Two of my daughters split smoked pork nachos and they ate almost all of them. I was impressed that the nachos included both a queso sauce and shredded cheese (something far too often overlooked). The queso had a great smoky flavor, but nothing that overpowered the pork, which was good (not great). I had the hanger steak fajitas, which is why we decided to try the spot in the first place. I'm pretty picky about fajitas, and our family will often drive to Houston and back in the same day, just for good fajitas (the GNO isn't known for good fajitas). So, when I heard this spot was grilling up hanger steak, I'm was DOWN! The steak was excellent! Very good flavor, and grilled perfectly to just under medium. I squeezed a lime over the skillet, and they were perfect! The green chili rice was good, although not what most people would expect from a Louisiana Mexican joint, but very flavorful. I had the pinto beans, and they were more ranchero style, with a great bacon flavor (thanks to the chunks of bacon), and great for dipping and/or spreading. One of daughters had the chicken fajitas, and the cook and flavor were great! It's easy to dry out grilled chicken, and they succeeded in serving great juicy flavor. The only negative I have for the fajitas were the tortillas. While they weren't your typical store-bought, they're definitely not house made. Both the steak and chicken would've gone to another level if Abuela had been there hand rolling some flour and corn tortillas. The guacamole is another negative. While it didn't taste bad, it wasn't fresh (the color was already browning), and I suspect it's not made in-house. The pico was also not freshly prepped, which was obvious from the dull colors. I didn't try it, so I can't speak to the flavor. All this said, my fam left full, and no one was complaining, so kudos for that! In a town not known for having good Mexican flare, this is a step in the right direction. I'm glad we have a new spot to try, and I'm hoping this joint makes it!

A few years ago I had been to La Tia in Metairie, and it left a serious impression. What stuck with me most were the craft cocktails...creative, clever, and a little bit mischievous. I still remember one in particular: a Mexican-inspired cocktail with mezcal and beet juice that somehow managed to taste like summer decided to take a vacation south of the border. It was the kind of drink that makes you pause mid-sip and say, "Okay... whoever thought of this deserves a raise." Somehow the place drifted off my radar over time. But when the craving for Mexican food hit, it popped right back into my head. I was excited to bring my son and daughter-in-law since they had never been. Unfortunately... the reunion didn't exactly go as planned. Two things hit me immediately while looking over the menu. First: the craft cocktails were gone. Not "different." Not "updated." Just... gone. Replaced with the same drinks you see in every other Mexican restaurant. Second: the prices nearly made me spit out the water I hadn't even ordered yet. $6 for a Corona. $18 for a basic burrito with fries. $10 for a kids plate over chicken tenders and some fries. And not the old La Tia burritos either...the ones I remembered piled high with rich molé, bright verde sauces, and layers of flavor that made you wonder if you should be taking notes. Nope. Now we're talking about a plain flour tortilla with some ground meat inside, no sauce, and a side of what looked suspiciously like freezer-aisle French fries. For eighteen dollars. My daughter-in-law ordered the fajitas, and honestly... they were rough. Thin strips of overcooked meat that looked like they had taken a brief vacation in a plastic bag before hitting the grill...served on a plate. Lately I've gotten into the habit of pulling up Yelp photos to compare dishes from past years, and I did exactly that. I found a photo of the same fajitas from about three years ago...big, juicy steak pieces, sizzling on cast iron and full of life. What we got looked like it came from a completely different restaurant. To be fair, my shrimp tacos were actually pretty good. Nicely cooked shrimp, decent flavor, and probably the lone bright spot of the night. But overall, it felt like the La Tia I loved had quietly packed up and left the building. The elevated Mexican food? Gone. The rich sauces? Gone. The inventive cocktails that made the bar worth sitting at? Also gone. In their place: food that feels pulled from a bag... at prices that feel pulled from a luxury menu. It's a tough thing when a restaurant you once loved loses its spark. But sadly, this visit felt less like a reunion and more like running into an old friend who has completely changed--and not for the better. As much as I hate to say it, I don't see myself returning to La Tia anytime soon. Turns out the only thing that stayed spicy... was the price tag.

On our last visit the fajitas were incredibly salty and we did not even finish them. Well, THEY ARE BACK! I am very happy to say this! We went there last week and had the chicken and steak fajitas and they were incredible once again. Great flavor, well seasoned, cooked to perfection. I have one big complaint, however, and it has something to do with their supplier. In my wife's and my opinion, the shells they provide to you for the fajitas are an absolute joke. Taco Bell's shells are larger. Every other Mexican food restaurant I have gone to are larger. Really, guys, I don't want to hear about your supplier, I could not care less and really do not want excuses. Then, the bartender has the Gaul to tell us that they are designed more for pushing than making a fajita! DO NOT tell me how to eat my meal and do not come up with such a poor excuse. Once I ordered, the food and drinks came out quickly. The 'unlimited' mimosas actually cap at 5, which is fine, but the mix they use cheapens the drink, and the glasses weren't the cleanest. The birria and grits were good (about a 7/10), though I think the pre-shredded Mexican blend cheese on top took away from the dish. A traditional white cheese would have worked better. The birria tacos were tasty, though. The bathrooms could use attention as there were no paper towels, which makes me wonder what employees do after washing their hands. Overall, it was a good experience and definitely cost-efficient. With a few tweaks to the drinks and presentation, this place could easily go from a 3-star to a 4- or 5-star brunch spot. I'll be back to try the tacos and check out the unlimited margaritas.
