Finally, real Mexican food which we have not had since leaving California. The roasting chickens when we first walked in made my mouth water and the aroma of hot food was almost more than I could handle. I ordered the tacos, rice, and beans. This is a great place to enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine. A hidden gem! I've been ordering 'torta de Milanesa' since I was a kid. It's cooked just right, with fresh ingredients and I'm telling you, it never fails! What makes this restaurant really unique is the fact that they hand make the tortillas. Reminds me of my grandma's cooking. Another favorite dish of mine is the enchiladas done in 'Michoacán style', they're done just right and the sauce they use for the tortillas is one like I've never had before. You can't find enchiladas like theirs anywhere else. People drinking beer enjoying themselves will never deter me from ordering from this little Mex staple. read more

Located right next to the Chavez Market on Middlefield Road. I was happy to see they were open at 8:30 on a Sunday morning. I studied the menu closely. The house specialty is Fajitas, but I felt it was too early for anything outside of breakfast, so I ordered the huevos con nopales (eggs with cactus) and a coffee. The chips and salsa arrived quickly. The salsa was reddish/brown and tangy made with tomatillos. Chips were average. The coffee took a long time. I suspected they were brewing a pot. Surprisingly they brought out a small tray with instant coffee, hot water, sugar, milk and a spoon. I actually like instant coffee, and prepared a decent cup. A small family walked in, a mom and her three teenage kids. I tried to eavesdrop, fishing for a recommendation, but all I could hear was the mom asking the server for mole' enchiladas and a cup of coffee. My dish arrived and I appreciated the chopped serranos in the scramble, like something I would have made at home. The tortillas were hand made, a standard for Middlefield Road. I was good with the dish, nothing spectacular, but pleasantly steaming, spicy, and a decent portion. I noticed the oldest son's dish came out first, and it took some time to get everyone else food. There were a few young men at another table, awkwardly flirting with the waitress. At some point these guys played a song on the jukebox, in my mind dedicated to the young lady, childish grins from each of them every time she walked by. Suddenly, the oldest son walked over to the counter and asked the server to turn the music down a little. Another guy came in and ordered scrambled eggs in green salsa, and a beer. I took a peek and his plate looked good! He asked for a few slices of avocado and they obliged. I paid, asking for a piece of aluminum foil for the remaining tortillas. I wish it was later in the day, on my out I noticed unfinished rotisserie chickens spinning in the light. read more

Love this place! It's everything you could want w no modern spins or fusion and at a good price! Usedta live nearby years ago and we would stop in once in a while for some good 'ol fashion Mexican food. The menu's changed obviously, but it's only improved. Very simple staples you'd find at most restaurants made with love. My Son and I stopped in a couple days ago for an after school meal and I must say that I still enjoy the flavors after a few years of absence. Ya walk in and the juke box's playin some good 'ol Mariachi music. It makes you feel right at home. Tables're nice and clean w ample seating for such a small space. Some of these newer places play music that jus doesn't compliment the menu or the decor. The nice ladies that work there are friendly and attentive. They'll make your food quickly and w a smile! Their rotisserie chicken roastin near the entry greets your salivary glands w a warm embracing hug to getchyer appetite goin! They've got all the Mexian beers you could want and even a seafood cocktail garnished w a Cerveza plunged into't! Genius! I'll get one w my fave Negra Modelo next time I go! Which'll be as soon as My next day off! (I guess that's a modern spin! Oops!) Tucked in next to a large Chavez supermarket, what caught our eye was the sign outside that said Italian Pastas. WTF? Very odd for a largely Hispanic neighborhood. So we walk in to find a pretty nice space. Good paint, nice art, a jukebox and Mexican television blaring in the corner.There's a small rotisserie in the front where several chickens were toasting away. We're handed the menus and no pastas to be found. Lots of Mexican entrees however but no tacos, so I decide on a plate instead. I went for something I'd never seen before; Aporreadillo, which is dried , spiced beef, cooked up crispy with a spicy tomato sauce and eggs, then sided with rice and beans. My co-worker went for the roasted chicken enhiladas with verde sauce. The Aporreadillo also came with freshly in house made tortillas. Everything was delicious. We were initially there alone and then slowly a lot of locals started filtering in with an odd couple of guys in ties at they end. What's weird about that is, my co-worker and I are generally the only non Mexicans in the whole area, especially with the hole in the wall places. As we were finishing up our meal the lady in the corner of the room started talking to us in perfect English! Turns out she's Patty, the owner, who asked us about our meals amongst other things. So of course I had to ask about the whole Pasta thing. She gave us the story about how she had a Mexican chef that was trained formally in Italian cooking and they used to serve Italian dishes but he had to return to Mexico. She reverted to a Mexican only menu and business ran as usual but she'd not taken down the Pasta sign. The restaurant apparently has been around for 25 years too and she described her philosophy on always fresh cooking with no microwaves. I also asked about the fact that there were chickens roasting up front but not on the menu and she said you can generally get a half one with rice and beans or take a whole one to go. So there's a lot of choices here in addition to a decently large menu. Before we left I also noticed a small whiteboard in Spanish of various specials too. Super friendly people and great food, with a selection of things you might not find at your typical Mexican places. I'm definitely going back for the roast chicken and Patty's version of Chilaquiles which she seemed to be very proud of. read more

Wow, who would have guessed that you can find a decent mexican restaurant within the same building as a supermarket? Well, I was recommended to come here by the owner of the meineke shop down the street. So I thought it was worth the shot. I came in here, expecting a really low price considering the surrounding neighborhood was predominately mexican, hispanic, and the like and figured competition would drive down prices, but the prices here ain't too shaby. I paid about $9-10 for a Chimichanga which was pretty good. What it is basically is a super burrito stuffed with rice, beans, carne asada, avocado (not guacamole), sour cream, and cheese. It is then deep fried till it is crunchy and delicious, then it is topped off with a chili verde sauce. The green sauce I think has a bit too much lime for me and so I had to scrape it off the chimichanga, but I ate it with a smile. If I decide to get that next time, I'll ask for it on the side. All entrees come with complimentary chips and three types of salsas. If I'm ever in the area, I might check this place out again. ***I post a few pictures of the mighty chimichanga*** read more

Good, solid Mexican place. I guess you should expect that from the "taqueria row" part of town, with all sorts of Mexican food places bunched together into a 2 block area. This place has a menu that looks familiar yet a bit different -- they actually describe the sauces they used more explicitly on some dishes. The sauces are very fresh tasting and delicious, and I'd recommend getting the different kinds of enchiladas to try. Their roast chicken is spiced really well and it's a must-try as well. The rice and beans are very solid -- the beans on the super mushy and cheesy side and the rice has a good tomato taste. The food ended up tasting less like a cookie-cutter Mexican fare and has rather a unique homely taste to it. I'd come back anytime to get my Mexican fix. read more

Ordered a shrimp burrito for take-out after visiting Chavez next door. There was maybe a very very tiny piece of a shrimp in all of the entire burrito. 99% all rice and beans and a couple pieces of onion. For $12 I felt I was totally ripped off. read more

This restaurant rates about a -1 on ambiance, and the latest time we came here the service was rather slow. That said, the food is excellent. Our guests wanted authentic Mexican food after experiencing a drought and they came away satisfied. I do wish that the music could have been turned down because it was hard to talk across the table with my guests. read more

We order lunches here fairly often for work and always pleased with the Chimichanga. Haven't ventured to anything other than a super burrito but the green sauce on the chimi always calls my name so that's the go-to for most of us in the office. It's huge, and smothered in a verde sauce and cheese after being cooked. Can't go wrong with that right?! I suggest also ordering their guacamole which compliments the chimi nicely. It's a hole in the wall spot BUT those are usually the best I'd give 5 stars but since Chile verde is my favorite meat I've had better from other places so that's my only gripe, but it's still tasty nonetheless read more

This review is based on a regular burrito. Got the regular cabeza (beef head, but it's really from the cheek meat) without rice. Unfortunately, it seems they only use refried beans, though I forgot to ask if they have anything else. That was partially my own fault, but if they DO have other beans, like pinto, then I feel they should've asked. Cabeza was tender, but it was lacking in flavor. The salsa, a mild green one that came separately, was run-of-the-mill. I believe they make tacos and burritos al vapor, meaning they steam the tortillas instead of frying/grilling. That gives the tortilla a nice chewy texture. But that was it, nothing else came in the burrito. The chips were a little on the thick side, not my preference, and a little heavy tasting in oil. Dipping salsa is the same as the one I got for my burrito. Salsa bar, non-existent. They have some other items that seemed interesting, so I may go back to give those a try. Rating a 2.5 since it's very average but rounding up to 3. read more

I had the Enchiladas Banderas. The food was quite tasty. The atmosphere was interesting. I'm a transwoman so I sometimes draw stares from people, especially given that I'm at the beginning of my transition, but I think every man in the room was staring at me. Granted this could have been because I was the only white person in sight. The waitress was nice, even if she didn't speak English very well. The television and the loud juke box were both blaring, loudly and in Spanish. All in all, it was a wonderful little adventure with very tasty food. I'm happy to say Las Parrillas not only measures up but even gives my favorites back home a run for their money. I was disappointed by this restaurant. I had hoped it would satisfy my mexican craving, but I just left unfulfilled. I was disturbed by the lack of cleanliness and hygiene. The tables were dirty and the plate that my meal came on was not thoroughly cleaned and had remnants of the previous meal on it. The first beverage I ordered from the menu was not available. The salsa that came with the chips was tasty, but lacking spice. Very few chips were given to us and they were never refilled. The burrito I ate was pretty bland. read more

This was a really cool place. I cannot pretend to be well-versed in authentic mexican / hispanic cuisine, but the food here was quite good. I asked the waitress girl what she recommended, but she doesn't speak English and I don't speak Spanish. After some hand gesturing and lots of smiles back and forth, she figured out what I was asking and ordered me the Mole. All of my past experience with Mole have been rather poor, but I took her recommendation and the Mole here was great! I could actually taste the cocoa in it :) So the Mole was very good and my friend's chimichanga was extra tasty as well. Normally, I don't care at all about ambiance, but man this place was awesome (in that super casual hole-in-the-wall way). There is a big jukebox at the back and it is LOOOUUUDDD, but it's really fun to hear the songs other people pick to play. Also, it's kind of like a picnic in there because you're eating at picnic tables, which I thought was pretty cool. It's just a really chill place to grab some good food :) Looking around, I noticed that a lot of the locals were getting horchata; I regret my diet coke now. The Campechana which is basically a seafood cocktail is Awesome!. I'm always on the lookout for good shrimp or seafood cocktail and this one of the best I've ever had ! It reminds me of my mom's ceviche. I've also had their rotisserie chicken and Burritos and they are also excellent. All of their food is really good and has that home cooked taste. Very nasty I went in there for two super burritos I walked in super excited to eat cuz there burritos are super bomb. As I walked in the Mexican lady greeted me while she was preparing chicken I tell her my name for my order doesn't bother washing her hands after touching chicken grabs my $20 hands me my change and bag of food . I stood there for a quick minute to put my change in my wallet , she goes straight back to the chicken marinating it with out washing her hands , after touching money that's pretty nasty , I still felt uneasy eating my burrito . Every time I want Enchiladas Michoacanas I run to this place. I like to order then with chicken, the chicken has this unique flavor that I can't find in another Restaurant yet. What I also like is the micheladas which enjoyed while I watch the fight that the play for free. The waitress is very nice and now she knows my kids very well and I really appreciate that. I was looking forward to coming and trying this place from friends recommendations. It says on Yelp that they deliver this is NOT true! I called to order for delivery for my co-workers and I. When i called the lady answered the phone and i asked to have delivery she hung up on me. I called back thinking it had accidentally been disconected or she was frustrated b/c it didnt seem like she spoke english. When i called back the lady answered again and said no delivery in spanish and when i said that yelp said they did she hung up again. I again thought it was b/c she didnt speak english so i had a co-worker who did speak spanish call when she finally answered the phone she told him i already told the lady no delivery i understood her and just didnt have time for it. Nice little clean place. People seemed friendly so I ordered the sopes. WOW. Their chorizo is absolutely the best I've had and I grew up near the Mission. People you have to try them or better yet don't because I got hooked on them. I have tried their chicken and that is also absolutely incredible too.
